    It was a very snowy morning on March 1, 2015 in Sheridan NY. when I went out to try to catch some trains. This CSX train was trying to set off on its route and needed to get the cars that were on the siding but there was plenty of snow in the way.
    So the 2 engines had to plow some snow first and got stuck when I turned the camera and they had to back up and try again. Then after it latched on to the cars it spun its wheels a bit before getting enough momentum to get the train moving.

    They had to use the engines to plow the snow away, he had to back up a few times. When I panned away the engines must have gotten stuck because the backed up again as I panned over. And you can see the snow was plowed all the way to the train. They probably moved it some then got stuck so they had to uncouple and plow the snow some more, otherwise why would the video show the snow plowed to the train if they weren't already couple to it?

      They are required to use the engine to make sure the track is clear, especially at crossings. It wasn't "stuck". They were following company procedure. It takes a lot to get an engine "stuck" in snow.

      That engineer did the same thing I did to start a heavy train that had set in a crosswind of drafting snow for a couple of days. I had too much power to try and pull it forward all at once, so I backed it up to clear the rails ahead of the cars and got them moving one at a time It works when you know what you are doing.

    My Grandfather was an engineer for CSX for years. He changed over to Amtrack and did that until he retired. His run was in WVa at night. When I was a kid I got to ride with him on is runs a lot. And I got to ride in the engine twice. Scared the hell out of me the first time. It was so loud. And when he took me down in the engine room I just about shit myself. The power of it was scary but awesome. Just something about trains that I love. I guess it is my great memories of my time around them.

    • @paulsmith5398
      @paulsmith5398 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To Steven Noel and others, yes, snowplows are pretty much a requirement now, and yes they still have sand. Case in point; when my dad was a kid, he and some friends would sneak over to the Wabash tracks at night and grease the rails, of course, this was nearly 100 years ago in the steam era. They would get a charge when those big steamers hit the grease and the drivers spun like crazy, until the engineer(s) dumped sand on the rails for traction. The railroad cops had an idea who was behind all of it, but never could catch them in the act. So, yes, plows and sand are here to stay.

      @kenmelrac 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WideWorldofTrains Cars had been parked on siding without power (note that the mainline tracks have the snow blown away and rails are visible while the siding still has snow covering the rails). The motors were the first thing moving toward the cars (note how the "cow catcher" is plowing snow). At 6:50 you can clearly see that the lead motor's wheels are not slipping and at 7:40-8:15 neither are the trailing motor's wheels slipping. Plus as the cars go by, you can see where snow had piled up against the wheels while they were parked in the siding, likely before the snowfall ended (though the wheels on the motors are missing the snow so betting they were brought to the cars, going past them to the switch and then what you show is them moving back on the siding to connect).

    Hate to comment on a video from 4 years ago, but.......No one was stuck here. Train started moving with locos barely above idle. Engineer being careful to make an easy start, keeping speed down as he was approaching a cross over switch in the distance. Didn't hear any throttle adjustment at any time to help control wheel slip. It's not the amount of snow to push thru, but the thin layer on the track surface that causes loss of traction. Once the loco has pushed thru there is the same amount on the track surface whether there is 6 inches or 2 feet of snow. I expect the moves back and forth was to spread some sand on the rails before trying to start, as a precaution. By the time all slack was taken from that long a train the locos would be past the crossing in the sanded area.

    i have watched it a few minutes ago and i am watching it again ... the two engines i suppose are plowing the railroad tracks back and forth and i think twice or more , besides the train logo i noticed agp, atlantic gulf pacific ... i suppose what i notice is a vehicle stuck in traffic for the train to gain inertia to move a little bit faster ...thanks

    Train was NOT stuck. The engineer made a couple back and forth moves to clear the track so when hooked to the cars there was better chance of traction to get the cars rolling and the train moving. Just standard practice. But NOT stuck as implied.

    Well - it appears to be a moving train, and quite early in the video. But the title says "stuck in snow." OKay - words are whatever you want them to mean! I wish I could be stuck like this train when I AM stuck!!

    Great Video. Never mind the critics. The armchair critics. The train was stuck. That's why the loco decouples and cleans the rails, and then takes another bite. Skillful engineer.

    Nice catch and great camera work capturing this rare event. Apparently the surface area between a railway wheel and the rail head is about the same as a dime, which is why all it took was a bit of snow to stall 8000 + horse power. Thanks for sharing, it's rare to film a stalled train like this and you did a great job.

    Interesting that the brakeman/conductor was wearing a white jacket. Doesn't help his/her visibility on the snow. Not the best from a safety perspective. Oh wait. It's not white. It's an approved "safety" yellow. Sorry about that!

    Am I missing something? I watched a video of a engineer clearing the ice and putting down extra sand, and then he couples and pulls a very heavy train without any noticeable wheel slip. Nothing in this video shows a train stuck...??? If you think he was stuck when he stopped and backed up, listen to the engines and brakes. He was at idle, stopped and backed up. If you thought he was struggling when he started pulling the 2 mile consist, he wasn't. He applied a notch at a time and gradually accelerated without creating excessive forces on the couplers. You should learn more about how to operate a locomotive before labeling your videos. I've seen so many people say things like, "a train broke down on the tracks", when in fact it was simply waiting for clearance to proceed...

      Never had to use them but we had sanders on our Locomotives, and he was powering up just like normal if you put to much on the throttle at a stand still your not going anywhere but your going to raise hell with the drive wheels as they pound themselves against the rail loosing traction , a good way to over stretch the couplings, damage something and maybe even find yourself get fired. I saw no problems here .

      Mr Pilot Steve.
      Before you start running anybody down I think you need more lessons on what this video is all about.
      Answer to your first question. Yes you DEFINITELY are missing something.
      Its called Experience in being a Vigilant Locomotive Engineer.
      There are people out there who have a passion for trains and putting them down only shows your ignorance rather than kindness in explaining what is happening here without stressing out.
      You will have your version ,Someone else will have theirs, but the only person who knows what is happening here is the Locomotive Engineer operating those locomotives and train.
      Right here is my take on the action.
      Either that train has stalled before the signal which may have displayed a Green Light OR or the train has stopped short of a red light and so the Locomotive Engineer has decided to secure his train , uncouple the locomotives and do what we see here in order to lift the train from a standing start after receiving a green light.
      We dont know what happened. Well I dont anyway.
      I can see the signal was at green while he was clearing the track of snow and most probably laying sand going backwards and forwards. Having done that a few times will give the locomotives better tractive effort to lift the train from where it is and carefully one notch at a time increase the throttle as the train traverses over the areas of track that was cleared and laid with sand thereby increasing the speed and momentum of the train and allow the locomotives to operate and move more effectively at a rate-able speed for the conditions without excessive wheel slip. Once the entire train and locomotives have got this 100% momentum going you are best to stay in whatever power notch you are in before wheel slipping AND no matter what speed you are doing because moving is far better than stopped and remain there until the train is clear of all troubles to prevent stalling again.
      Having said all this, I think the owner of this film is Correct. The train did become STUCK but in Railway terms we normally use the word STALLED. A minor error lesson learned.
      You should learn how you treat people, they are far more important than locomotives.
      Great filming Sir!
      Wayne M.

      @@matiu1 Thank you for the in-depth explanation of what likely happened. I think that people are complaining about the video because the term "stuck" usually means something isn't able to move. The video could have been labeled "2 Mile Long Train Starts Moving After Being Stalled In Snow", since the video never actually showed the loco attempting to move while stuck. Quite honestly, based on the title, I expected to see the wheels slipping or something.
