Quick post for vis -- I've updated the thumbnail to remove the AI-generated Link. Although this video wasn't ever monetized (I don't think I have that ability as a new channel), I understand that it was communicating a stance on AI and AI tools that I wasn't intending. Here's my position: I believe in artists getting paid and recognized for their work--full stop. I do not support AI or AI tools that take away work or jobs from artists. Likewise, I put a lot of work into these videos, and I don't want them to be associated with something fast, cheap, or that exploits other people's work. I leaned on the AI-generated characters previously because I thought using official Nintendo imagery would invite the knives from their lawyers--and while I'm still nervous about that issue--it's not a good excuse. I'm still learning, and I just want to say thank you to those that shared this feedback. I will try to do better, and thank you for bearing with me!
@@NovaKumo Thank you Nova, I really appreciate your kind words! I've been learning *a lot* in the last month or two, and I've been so fortunate to have kind folks like yourself offer encouraging comments. I really appreciate you--thank you for checking out the video!
I know how you feel @gavinisdie! I've been lucky with Nintendo controllers for my whole life outside of Joy-Cons; it's strange that this particular controller has so prone to drift. 😅 Thank you for checking out the video, I really appreciate you!
@@TheMenaceHimself2006 It's wonky to hold but the N64 controller actually has size and texture to grip onto while the joycon you're trying to hold this tiny smooth thing and it just doesn't work for me. That and the 64 sticks are only failing after decades of hard use while my blue joycon is gonna be on it's 4th stick now with light use. Just leagues better for reliability and comfort imo.
I can relate to this pain ... I tried sending in three different pair of Joy-Con to Nintendo to try and fix my stick drift and they all more or less drifted immediately / were unplayable. I made the jump to a Hori Split Pad Pro and never looked back! Thank you for checking out the video Mist, always appreciate you! 👋
@NotYourFriend-YT I'm curious did the letter they send back with the joycons say they fixed the controllers or replace them? When I sent in 2 sets of them they sent me a message specifically saying they had to replace them completely and they haven't drifted since. Not sure if it's just luck or if they actually modified their new Joycons.
Inb4 all the Nintendo glazers in the comments saying Nintendo repairs joycons for free, even though they only do that in a few us states, not anywhere else in the world and it's only done because they were literally legally forced too.
Yuuup, this 100% -- it was beyond frustrating watching so many users in Europe struggle with stick drift, only to be told "you have to pay for repairs yourselves". I'm glad that Nintendo finally opened up the repair program, but it was after a lot of negative PR and pushback! Thank you for checking out the video, @nascour5991 -- really appreciate you! 👋
They don't do it in Canada. They wanted to as much as 2 new ones to fix the drift in my brothers joycons. I kid you not, so I picked him up new ones. It is total bullshit. He has gone through 3 pairs now. The new ones are doing it now too. He just uses the pro controller now. Fuck those joycon POS. Fuck Nintendo.
@@NotYourFriend-YT uh what countries do they do the repairs for in Australia and unsure my hands are small yes for a adult even my ds feels about right so I would really like the joycons to work or something smaller
bro I remember reading that gently rubbing toothpaste on the disc could fix it, but it just scratched it even more and completely stopped it from working 😭 can't believe I fell for that
@@no-bark4112 nah bro that shit works I’ll put it on my life! I had a homie that was well off and spoiled so he would get all the new games and not take care of the discs because his parents would get new ones. Tldr he gave me all the old scratched disc and I got 4/6 to work with toothpaste Skyrim, skate 3, cod 4 are the ones I remember
@@Wavecheckfooi genuinely believe specifically only skyrim, skate 3, and cod 4 would be the only ones to work. Can vouch for skate 3 as I did that as well lol. I’m convinced those 3 disks could be snapped and glued back together and at the very least boot up.
Unfortunately their next console likely WILL have stick drift. The fact of the matter is that every controller that uses a potentiometer based analog stick is vulnerable to potential stick drift over time. It's not a matter of when, but if. Nintendo could in theory use hall-effect based analog sticks or magneto-resistive based sticks, but most likely they will go with potentiometer sticks again. All three of the big current console makers use them. It's sad because in the 90's Sega used hall-effect sticks for their dreamcast controllers, and in the 2000's Sony used magneto-resistive sticks for their dualshock 3 controllers. Other than that, every other official controller uses potentiometer based sticks. Here's the really shitty part though. These sticks are chosen not for quality, but because they are cheap. Like you can buy replacements for just a few dollars. But hall-effect sticks aren't actually that much more if at all. Like my 8bitdo controller has hall-effect sticks and it cost me as much as a Switch pro controller. This thing is about as good as an actual Switch pro controller except it also supports PC gaming using bluetooth or a dongle that allows it to be used as an x-input controller. Similarly, Gullikit and other third party manufacturers have managed to release good and reliable controllers with hall-effect for about the same price as a standard official controller. Meanwhile, Sony and MS both released more expensive elite controllers that still use the elcheapo potentiometer sticks. The industry knows that these sticks are not reliable. Sony even sells replacement stick modules since their elite controller features removeable stick modules. These stick modules are 50 dollars each! Instead of designing the controller with proper analog sticks, they just allow you to easily replace them for the price of nearly a brand new standard controller. Nintendo's joycons of course seem to drift more than other controllers because in addition to the inherent weakness of potentiometer based sticks, the Joycons have a design flaw that exacerbates it. The main issue is that their design allows dust to get into the the stick itself. This is why so many people have had some level of success by cleaning theirs. This can help alleviate the issue when some dust gets in and causes interference, but it won't fix the issue of the sticks literally wearing down over time. Worse is that when dust does get in it will speed things up bit by bit meaning the sticks can actually wear out even quicker. Nintendo has had several years to fix their design flaw, but yet don't because it is cheaper to just pay the 3 dollars to fix the sticks when people send them in. Especially because they know how many people just buy new joycons, either when they start drifting or when a new color comes out and they want it. I saw many people who denied that it was an issue often admitted that they had multiple sets and likely just never used one set long enough for drift to develop. But a pair of joycons is not cheap and it's not a good defense defense even then. In the end, people have had to turn to the third party market for a reliable controller. Or resort to modifications to fix the issue.
Those are great points, @AlbedoAtoned! It's mind blowing just how cheap some of the components are in the Joy-Con controllers (and it's not surprising that they drift). I hope Nintendo sees just how big of an issue it was for this console generation, and decide to use higher quality parts or hall-effect sticks! I've also had to rely on third party controllers like the Hori Split Pad Pro, which has worked well for me! But yeah, in an ideal world, the Joy-Con wouldn't drift so much ... 😅 Thank you very much for checking out the video and for sharing your insights! You are greatly appreciated! 👋
They want the average consumer to replace controllers constantly because couch co-op is dead. No company would be able to get away with this blatant manufacturing "flaw" if split-screen was still around. We've had hall-effect sticks since the Dreamcast, btw.
Companies saw dollar signs from people buying replacement controllers so they cheaped out on the designs to make even more money, it’s not just Nintendo too because oculus also has this issue too
@EdgarMorrisandTheDead When I had the Xbox 360 controller, I got no stick drift at all, but when I got an Xbox One controller, that's when I suffered stick drift a lot 😡
Oh wow, that's wild! I've had the exact *opposite* experience as you, Jade! That said, as long as you have a way to play your favorite games, that's what's important! Thank you for checking out the video-I appreciate you!
What kills me is the Wii U was basically a switch lite. Drift issues will happen with a Wii U but they take so much longer to happen. I had mine for like 4 years (got it in it's final year after all the games for it were more or less out) I put in 500 hours between playing the original Xenoblade Chronicles and Zelda Breath of the Wild alone. That's not counting I don't know how many hours of Mario Kart 8 among others with zero drift issues. However, when they did finally appear I was able to completely replace, all by myself, the sticks and the whole piece they're attached to inside the Wii U for under $10 in less than 10 minutes with NO skills for such a task whatsoever because it's THAT easy to do. I still play mine regularly enough and after 3-4 years since replacing the sticks still no drift yet. Why did Nintendo completely throw out a clearly superior and far easier to fix thumbstick design? That's the real question.
That's amazing that you were able to replace those sticks yourself ChaosPoet - I once tried to replace my drifting joycons and ... let's just say it didn't go well ... 😂 (I broke a ribbon cable, rip) Thank you for sharing your experience and insights, you're the best!
@@NotYourFriend-YT If you've never fixed a Wii U here's how easy it is. The entire Joycon piece is detachable. You just pop it out and put a new one it. That's it. The rest of the time is spent on the screws. It's unbelievably easy compared to Switch Joycons. They over complicated them, I think, just to makes them nothing like the Wii U just because the Wii U didn't sell so well. That's my hypothesis anyway.
I have a whole drawer with a pile of about 10 pairs of drifting Joy-Cons. The fact that they're even legally allowed to sell these pieces of crap for 80 dollars and then argue that drift is not a real issue is insane.
I feel your pain @uvuvwevwevweonyetenyevweug6314 -- I've had three pair drift on me, and even after they were "repaired" they continued to not work very well. It's not fun! Thank you for checking out the video, I really appreciate you! 👋
When I sent in my joycons to nintendo they fixed the drift so they’re not really arguing that. They literally say themselves that the reason you can send them to get fixed for free is because they are low quality.
So you spent about $800 on garbage controllers instead of thinking to yourself that third party would probably last longer? I get it’s hyperbole but even after the second pair it’s easy to figure out these are crap lol
nintendo makes great games but treats their customers like shit, valve makes great games but have gotten greedy and lazy, playstation has no games, microsoft has no quality control, epic games is patient zero for a lot of the big issues with modern gaming, bethesda refuses to move on from the early 2000s, i don't even need to explain Ubisoft, EA, Activision Blizzard, etc
completely agree with you stella - I'll be digging into other companies once I've wrapped up this series on Nintendo. (Needless to say ... there's a lot of bad practices to spotlight on all fronts ...) 😭
I don't think Bethesda is stuck in the early 2000's, I'd go so far as to say that it would be better if they were stuck in the early 2000's! At least then, their writing and worldbuilding wouldn't be so lackluster.
The joycons have made me way more skeptical of getting any of Nintendo's consoles moving forward. If they're this scummy with faulty expensive controllers on their current hardware, I'd much rather wait a year or two to see if issues arise with the next console before ever considering buying it. It's a miracle that the pro controllers are actually well made in comparison, they saved my Switch experience.
I know how you feel @bluewind7988, I've had really bad drift on mine as well. I *really* hope Nintendo decides to use different controllers for their next console. 😂 Thank you for sharing your experiences and for checking out the video, I appreciate you!
The joycons are the worse controllers I used through out my console pleb life. They're really bad. For input latency and deadzone. You'll notice how bad they are in smash ultimate
It took at least a year (maybe two) before my controllers started to drift, so I sent them to be repaired. They came back alright, but a couple months later started drifting again. Last year, my other set of joy cons (a couple years old now I think) started drifting really badly, so I ended up getting a pro controller (because of drift and actual damage) and have thankfully had no issues with that so far, but I recall hearing of some of those that have drifted too.
I'm glad to hear your experience with drift wasn't as severe as mine! Likewise, I've been fortunate with the pro controller as well. If we ever meet in mario kart and I repeatedly drive off the ledge, you'll know I'm playing with my drifting joy-cons. 😂
Its sad because all of the Nintendo-made pro controllers I've gotten have broken down and started drifting within a few months... But meanwhile, the third-party rock candy controllers I have still do not drift, and its been a good few years since I got them. Its depressing that cheap third-party controllers function properly while Nintendo's own controllers don't.
I BARELY play my Switch, and even mine developed drift. But Nintendo has a history of cheap, temporary hardware. Look at the VirtualBoy's (stop laughing) video cables being GLUED down instead of soldered, the glue would degrade, crack, and peel away.
Oh wow, that's wild @The_Nametag! I hadn't heard that the Virtual Boy had cables that were actually ... glued down ... that's not great. 😂😂 Thank you for checking out the video, I really appreciate you!
It’s mostly that every single old controller had slightly more expensive and complicated designs to prevent stick drift in them, modern companies however don’t give a crap and only see dollar signs because now they get to save money on making them *and* they get extra money from replacements. Modern companies don’t have to care about PR because so many people are die hard fans and just don’t care enough to stop throwing money at them
That's fair @blademasterzero, and in hindsight I definitely should have talked about the drift issues in the other modern consoles. That's my bad, I'll be sure to broaden the scope in future episodes!
@@JordiumZ ELI5: there is a supply chain involved in the making of each individual spec of electronics in the equipment, nintendo is not making the chips. the supply chain, like every other major electronics manufacturing, probably has multiple human rights abuses from the mines that harvest the metals to the factories that assemble the microelectronics. if you look at the pay rates of even samsung/apple factory workers, you will get an idea for what nintendo pays as well. im sure iwata took a paycut to help other employees, but its never those employees, if they are even legally part of the same conglomerate.
One of the worst side effects of the drift is Nintendo tried, "fixing" it through software, so the Switch will increase the dead-zone on the sticks over time so over time your sticks become so inaccurate it's basically useless. The hall effect sensors you can order off Amazon are a complete life changer. They're amazing. The Switch was the most disappointing Nintendo generation for me, it was so sterile, the Switch feels just incomplete, and it's in an awkward spot where it's not powerful enough to make good looking/performing games, but it's also not weak enough for developers to have an excuse for the game to look bad, so it takes way too much effort to port games to the Switch, games that won't even sell anyways since Nintendo fans really only buy first party games. Not to mention the quality of games you get for the amount of money you spend is not a great deal. The only games I've played on my Switch in the past 3 years or so were TOTK, New Horizons (incomplete letdown 😫) and BOTW.
I'm *so* jealous of folks that have hall effect sensors ... I've been too much of a chicken to try installing them after I snapped a ribbon cable on my last attempt. 😂 I agree as well, the hardware of the console really feels like it is holding it back. Seeing ports like Mortal Kombat on it are just ... really not great compared to their PS counterparts. Likewise, I just want to say thank you for sharing your insights and for checking out the video, I really appreciate you! 👋
Not gonna lie, I'm seriously worried about what potential hardware issues the next console might have. And more than that I'm worried about how Nintendo will inevitably handle (or not handle) them. The channel continues to be amazing, though, and your writing and editing is just so smooth and professional! Seriously keep up the great work and can't wait for you to get the growth and success you sorely deserve!
Despite going through 3 pairs that still have bad buttons and drift, I hope the split-controller design still catches on in the nearest future. Resting both arms with separate halves of a controller delivered a newfound comfort compared to the regular way
Oh wow that's wild @leeburgers2444, you have been lucky with joycons but unlucky with the PS5! I'm pretty much the exact opposite ... my PS5 has been okay, but my joycons drift so much it's mind blowing. 😅 Thank you for checking out the video, I appreciate you!
@@NotYourFriend-YT It seems PlayStation is just as guilty as Nintendo because i hear a lot more voices about drifting with this new PS5 controllers that in the past with PS4 etc. Mine hasn't yet drifted but i only have it for a few months and the right adaptive trigger is already showing an issue in my controller. It works but it makes weird sounds when i press it. Bare in my mind i have treated the controller very kindly i don't throw it anywhere or put it in any dirty places etc. It always goes back to it's place after gaming. My joy cons are fine but i am not a good sample to attest to their quality because i don't use them that much since i use the pro controller most times because i play it more threw the TV and when i hold it i rarely use the joy-cons because i got annoyed how you can feel a little flex and i bought a Nitro Deck that you can place the Switch tablet part inside and make it feel like one unit.
People saying "just put a tape" "oh it's an easy fix!". NO! that's not the case, the point is we wasn't supposed to do that in the first place, especially not to a brand new switch.
100% agree with you Corvus; I've never had an easy fix for my joycons ... even after sending them to Nintendo and getting them back, they still drift like it's Neo dodging bullets in the Matrix. 😂
@@NotYourFriend-YT I just can't believe how people could dismissed other people problems just because they thought it's an "easy fix", this is 100% Nintendo's fault.
Thank you for checking out the video @lasercraft32 -- there's definitely a big part of me that still wants good things for Nintendo (and the industry / consumers). I hope they can learn from their mistakes! Likewise, thank you for checking out the video -- I really appreciate you! 👋
While mine isn't quite a 'Day One' Switch, I've never experienced Joy-Con drift. A testament to taking care of my controllers and console while keeping it secured inside a case when not in use. Now my game choices may not be the most abusive, but it's not like I never used them, either. In fact, weekly use. A great break distraction. The right side contacts in the console have gotten dirty, causing disconnects on a regular basis. But that has (thankfully) been it.
I'm happy to hear you've been lucky with Joy-Cons, @jupreindeer! I agree-I think taking care of controllers is super important / a big reason why mine developed drift. I get *way* too into Smash Bros and Mario Kart 😂 Thank you for checking out the video and for sharing your experiences, I really appreciate you! 👋
it is about how much and how hard you ise them mostly i finally destroyed my ps3 analogs after like 7 years of use on the contrary, the xbox wired controller i bought for the pc died in like 6 months, i changed it, it was easy to desolder, but it is a pos controller i have a old logitech, like 20 years and is still in good shape not launching them to the wall does help, but some brands do use the worst analogs possible
It's not about how pristine the joycons are, an manufacturing fault is there by design and happens no matter what you do or how well you take care of it
The funny thing about joy con drift: it's caused by the plastic inside the control sticks wearing away and sticking. Therefore, the buttered croissant could have actually helped fix the issue.
Sorry for going overboard with the cuts @Hysteria98, I tried to reduce it in this week's video! (I'll also try to continue improving on this front) Thank you for the feedback!
I knew the controller was going to be defective on release when they referred to them as "innovative" Just a life pro tip for those who haven't figured it out yet; that's corporate speak for "overpriced garbage"
I'll keep my ears peeled for when they unveil their next console. If I see the word "innovative" mentioned anywhere near those controllers, I'll be ready!! 😂
@@NotYourFriend-YT If it's actually good they'll use "revolutionary" instead of "innovative" EDIT: "Cutting edge" is another word for "experimental" will probably be really good but also break a lot.
I've had one switch for 4 years now. Not once did I EVER experience drift and its crazy. Only recently I noticed that my left stick does start to move on its own. But in FOUR YEARS??? I was shocked cause of how much people said they had it and I was just chillin 💀
I'm happy for you, @drquacker1! My joy-con were not so lucky, I've gone through three pair and they all drift really bad. Maybe I just need to put down the doritos ... 🤣 Thank you for checking out the video and for sharing your experiences. I really appreciate you! 👋
👏 YES! I completely agree with you Tails ... they are a thing of beauty (I really love small devices ... I'm still using an iphone mini haha), but it's a shame that they have so many issues. If they worked correctly, they'd be among my favorite controllers ever!
Ugh, that's rough ... I had several pair of Joy-Con drift on me constantly and I know how un-fun that experience was, so I can relate. 😓 Fingers crossed their next console has better controllers! Likewise, thank you for checking out the video @franciscocruzv3733 -- I really appreciate you. 👋
@@90sNath That's uber frustrating; have you tried the pro controller? I've heard some folks have better luck with them. (But yeah ... the Joy-Con are ... not great.)😅
It's not just drift- the X button on one of my Joy-Cons has also become less responsive. Even when it comes to their classic controllers, they were never that great- we just attach them to the happy memories we had playing the games. The Wii Classic Controllers and Wii U Pro Controllers are much more comfortable.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with Joy-Con @princessrescuermk3! I know you feel (not with unresponsiveness, but with REALLY bad stick drift myself), and it's frustrating! That said, I'm glad you've got other controller options so you can experience those libraries games. Thank you for checking out the video, and for sharing your insights! You are appreciated!❤️
You don’t need a company to be your friend but they should foster good will in their consumer base. Business is business and if you screw over your consumer it will bite you in the ass
I faintly recall having stick drift just a little bit on the PS3. I remember noticing it when CoD was on a boom. When playing CoD 4: Modern Warfare, and prolly on MW3 too, as I remember that being one of my favs that I played A LOT.
Oh that's interesting, thank you for sharing your experiences @GaryEckhoff-nx2mn - I've been lucky, I didn't experience any stick drift on PS3 (or PS4/5) at all; I've just been plagued by my joy-cons being fussy. 😂 I really appreciate you checkin' out this video! 👋
My DS Lite Dpad is still 100% functional after 15+ years of use, and it's literally just a tiny flimsy silicon piece with contacts. Meanwhile my left joycon got sticky input after only a year, and my right joycon got drift only a few months later. Replaced the sticks with some 3rd party hall effect sticks and they've been fine ever since.
The DS Lite is an incredible device, and your experience is almost exactly the same as mine Creeper!! (I stopped using my Joycons a while ago and shifted to the Hori Split Pad Pro and haven't had issues.) ❤️
Yes, the ultimate solution for joy con drift: greasy fingers! Just keep in mind just like Nintendo is not our friend we the customer are not their friend either. Remember the late Wii and entire WiiU era? A rabid Nintendo fanbase hounded without relent Satoru Iwata all the way until his passing. For what exactly? Because Nintendo was not selling consoles and fans from other platforms was making fun of them. Iwata's being personable and engaging did not save him from very loud scathing criticism until the end. President's Shuntaro Furakawa's aloofness is probably for the best because in the end, no one really care about anyone outside their inner sanctum, however they define it.
That's a great point @Shinjiduo - especially about Satoru Iwata. A couple years ago I read a book of quotes / stories about his life called "Ask Iwata". I was really impressed that someone of his position had come up from the technical side of things, even so far as to occasionally help with programming even after he became president. 🤯
Thank you Falling, I really appreciate the kind words ❤️ If you ever have any topics you'd like to see in future episodes, feel free to let me know! (Goodness knows there's so much stuff that needs to be fixed in the gaming industry, haha.)
Howdy all 👋 just wanted to say a massive thank you for watching. Please let me know if you experienced Joy-Con drift in the comments (or if you were one of the lucky ones that dodged it) and any funny gaming moments that may have arisen! 🙂 Thanks for watching, and for the kind comments and feedback! ♥
Weirdly, my Joy-Cons (I mostly call them Form Stones after the similar in design objects from WarioWare: Move It!) almost NEVER drift. Or at least the ones I use these days, my REALLY old ones from 2018 DID (after a long long while). Maybe I’m just lucky for no reason.
my left one had really unique joycon drift kind of it would play inputs and was a nuisance to play even pokemon as it did it at 18.7 second intervals with different variants such as hard forward twitch forward and also do the inwards press to the joycon and sometimes it would make it for some reason disconnect the controller or connect to the switch even if it was not attached and then the switch would disconnect the controller since it was like oh yeah ''don't move your controller'' which was a really weird warning or a threat
If I remember correctly they used copper connections for the joystick. Copper can break down overtime. I’ve just learned to change the joysticks myself it takes me like 10-20 minutes. I even did a full shell swap while I was doing it.
Oh that's interesting, @pimpnamedkane - thank you for sharing that info! I bet your new Joy-Con shells look *amazing*! Thank you for checking out the video and for sharing your experiences, really appreciate you! 👋
(11:25) Nintendo must offer repairs/replacements day one due to warranty. 2 years right of replacement for joycon drift, and that timer restart every time it's fixed. That's how it is in EU.
I bought a used gen 1 Switch with the original from a GameStop back in 2019 and have somehow never experienced the drift on those. Funny thing though is I bought a brand new ProController a few months later from Best Buy and discovered that the D-pad would almost always register a "down" press when I pressed "right". Turned out the fix was to take the whole thing apart and put a piece of tape on the little peg where the D-pad sits. Not nearly as widespread of a problem as joycon drift but still well known enough that it was an easy fix.
Oh that's an interesting fix, thank you for sharing ichaukan! I've also noticed my pro controller's dpad being fussy when it comes to downward angles-I might try to follow in your footsteps and put a piece of tape there!
Who manufactures the actual control sticks? Because I don’t believe Nintendo does the whole manufacturing process, just the final assembly. The problem should be blamed on the company actually making the defective part rather than Nintendo for using it.
The Nintendo switch manufacturer is foxxconn a Chinese company that has had controversy concerning its workers basically most employees there try to jump off buildings because the work conditions are horrible. I mean both Microsoft and Sony also use Foxconn as well unfortunately. But getting back on topic. Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony are supposed to make sure that everything works properly Nintendo did this with the wii and probably gamecube they don't do that anymore. I've heard that they used to throw wiis at the wall to see if it'll break or not. Edit both Foxconn and Hosiden made switch's.
My current joycons don't drift yet, but the right one keeps physically disconnecting from the switch itself juuuuust enough for the system to think I've taken it off, causing the system to pause everything and open up the controller selection screen. My older drifty ones don't have that problem.
That sounds super frustrating aquageist; I haven't experienced it myself, but I've heard other folks mention it in the comments. (My main pair just drift like crazy, and I can't stand em) 😂
What's baffling the most to me is that almost no third party manufacturer offers controllers that don't drift. They could easily capitalize on the immense demand for quality sticks in Switch controllers but most of the time they still implement the same flawed stick design that the official Joycons use and the same drifting issues ensue eventually, even if not as quickly. It wasn't until somewhat recently that someone made a controller with Hal effect sticks but IIRC it was just a limited release which became hard to get. Would it kill them to make a widely available controller with decent build quality? It doesn't even have to have Hal effect, just do what they were doing in the 6th and 7th console generations, back then we never had any issues with those.
Nintendo's game dev teams: Usually creative, makes things of high quality, and generally kind to their community Nintendo: Oh, our shitty joy-cons are ruining our console? F*ck off, we're still making bank.
16:30 - no, the reality is that by designing joycons to have drift issues, they can sell more joycons. And they're cheaper to make. Win-win for Nintendo.
Funnily enough my Switch Lite has never drifted in the over 5 years I've had it, but my Original Switch's left joystick doesn't even work anymore. The lack of drift on the Switch Lite is the main reason I play on it.
I'm happy to hear your Switch Lite is safe from drift, Stibly!! (Also, can I just say ... I *LOVE* your hamster profile icon .. it's adorable haha.) Fingers crossed neither of experience drift for the rest of our gaming days! 👏
Lucky me after several years of playing for at least an hour every day, I've only ever experienced rare instances of very minor drift that was fixed by simply nudging the stick.
I'm happy to hear it DimentiosLoyalest!! (And slightly jealous, haha) 😂 I've had three pair myself that developed drift super bad, to the point where trying to play zelda was agonizing. 🫠 Thank you for checking out the video, I really appreciate you!
Yuuuup, I completely agree @charlessoto1792 -- I remember the first time I handled the dock and realized how platic-y it felt. Definitely didn't feel like a premium product at that price tag! Thank you for checking out the video, I really appreciate you! 👋
Back in high school I always knew joycon drift was a widespread issue, which prompted me to treat my controllers like borderline hospital equipment (obsessively cleaning w rubbing alcohol, contact cleaner, compressed air, etc). That's literally the only reason I think I avoided joycon drift though, it's truly a testament to how fragile these wimpy little joysticks are. Remember when Nintendo cared about build-quality?
I was so devastated when I first got joycon-drift. It was my friend's joycon and I tought I carelessly destroyed his controller. I even bought him a new one and they're expensive!!! Later all of my joycons started drifting. It was impossible to play and killed all my fun with the console. I resorted to getting a 25bucks Power A controller. After 3 months IT GOT JOYCON DRIFT!!!. One after another breaking down. Finally I was so done and bought the cheapest controller for 6 bucks and it still works to this day! JUST HOW?
It sucks because if it wasnt for drift these are some of my favorite controllers. I used em for ages until they started drifting despite having a procon.
I recently bought a joycon on Amazon and they sent me a fake one. The box looked so off and it straight up didn't work. It said it was shipped and sold my nintendo, I checked. They did send me a replacement one but still idl how that can even happen
I've had to personally replace multiple sticks in many different controllers. It's really annoying digging through all the internals of a JoyCon to get to the joystick, remove and replace it, and put EVERYTHING back together again.
That sucks that you've had to do that @MofoMan2000, but *big* kudos for you being able to do it!! I once tried to replace one of my joy-con sticks and I ripped a ribbon cable ... so that one was broken.😂 Thank you for sharing your experiences, you're the best!
My solution after years of struggling and replacing sticks with the typical nintendo ones was to swap them out for hall effect sticks, boom. I also purchased a NYXI wizard controller which also acts as joycons, and it has turned out to be possibly my favorite controller, period. Would've saved a whole lot of money if this wasn't an issue though...
100% right there with you Leek-san ... I've NEVER gone back to my joy-con after getting a Hori Split Pad Pro. Trying to play games with drift is a no-go 😂
I sent 2 sets of joy cons for repair ( mine and my sister) and then mine again and then I replaced the joysticks with generic switch lite ones that were the cheapest on Amazon and no drift to this day and now they have white caps which is neat.
I have been experiencing drift on my Quest 2 left controller frequently. Keep in mind games do not use the joysticks equally, some will overuse the left one while the right one gets barely used, and I do not know of any games that work the other way around (at least on a Quest 2) I just popped the whole thing apart and ordered a bundle of 5 joysticks (as in, the X/Y potentiometer or whatever ya call it) and simply replace it. I need to do that almost once a year but it's fine it doesn't bother me. People seem to not understand the concept of wear and tear - that's why I didn't get mad at my controller fucking up.I played a lot of games daily and it's fully undersdtandable that the joystick breaks, especially with the old boomer instinct of "press harder action happens harder" which is exacerbated by your attention being immersed into the game while you apply excessive pressure on the joystick. Same goes for the JoyCon I reckon, you're playing Smash or whatever and abusing the hell out of it. That being said, I never owned a Switch and do not know how quickly the drift happens, maybe someone can enlighten me with an average
My rule of thumb. If I'm using a controller, I get one with paddles/buttons so I can map my sticks to them. I also don't play it out of the dock enough to use my joycons. I haven't encountered drift. I hope I don't.
Glad to hear you've been drift-free Bvgzi!! I haven't been that lucky, but it's good to hear that some folks aren't there aren't dealing with stick drift on the Switch!
I Bought Hall effect sticks on Amazon and never had to deal with drift again. The real question you should be asking is if Nintendo wants to fix drift when they can pull a PlayStation and charge for replacement stick modules.

I just got mine back from nintendo, I sent 4 and they fixed only one and sent 3 new ones. I am just scared they will drift again. It only costs 3$ for service fee but still, this should not be a problem.

About 2 years ago I bought Funlab Joy-Pads for $40. They’re really ergonomic, durable, and support Wireless and Gyro unlike the Hori Split Pad Pro. They even come with a “holder” (thing that turns them into a single controller), and a 2-headed USB-C cord. For the record, I haven’t actually had much problem with Joy-Con drift (it happened once and I sent it in for repairs), but even that aside, the Funlab Joy-Pad is just sooooo much better. By comparison, the Joy-cons feel tiny to hold, and the joystick feels like cheap plastic. Hey, at least we can take them off and put on something actually nice.
I've not heard of the Funlab product, but I'm glad you've had a good experience with it!! I agree with you hypestar: the joy-cons make everything else feel HUGE in comparison. 😂
I have had a pink switch lite for 4 years and I’ve never had drift, the only issue is the rubber on the base started falling off but I think they make it much higher quality for the lite since you can’t switch it out.
I remember buying a new Switch last year thinking I was inmune to drift because I handle my consoles with utmost care. Well... I eventually experienced it too! Replaced them and traded the Switch for a PS4 with Bloodborne.
I've also been unlucky with drift. Sorry to hear you were affected, @ashey_chan! (But I will say ... Bloodborne is amazing and it sounds like you made a good trade.) ❤️

I got a new switch but my old one I gave to my sister developed drift. I just took them apart and replaced the sticks. I had already shell swapped joycon before and did a metal latch replacement, as well as use joycon toolkit to make the color on the switch match the shell.
Kudos on replacing the sticks, @mcmadness110!! That's really impressive! I tried to replace one of my pair's sticks after they got drift, and it did *NOT* go well ... I accidentally snapped a ribbon cable. 😅 Thank you for checking out the video and for sharing your experiences, I'm glad you're drift-free! ❤️
I might have been one of the lucky ones to not get drift, but did get an issue where the right joycon won't click into place, so in handheld mode it won't get recognized. Which is arguably a design issue, since obviously bluetooth would still work, but no it has to be either both connected or both bluetooth. At least I don't use handheld mode much so I just got a pair of bootleg splatoon joycon and called it a day
I'm glad you've had a good experience diethylmalonate!! (Except the right joycon not clicking into place .. that sounds frustrating) I mostly stick to my Hori Split Pad Pro when I'm in handheld mode, and it has been smooth sailing for me!
both the left and the right stick of my joy cons have been drifting for years now. ive only ever used them when i played handheld, which i barely ever did in my switch‘s lifespan. and now my pro controller also started drifting… its so over… 😔
Thank you for the kind words Diya! I also laughed way too hard when I saw that Tokyo Drift edit ... that's a legendary meme edit if I've ever seen one ... 😂

Inb4 all the Nintendo glazers in the comments saying Nintendo repairs joycons for free, even though they only do that in a few us states, not anywhere else in the world and it's only done because they were literally legally forced too.

Thank you very much for checking out the video and for sharing your insights! You are greatly appreciated! 👋
They want the average consumer to replace controllers constantly because couch co-op is dead. No company would be able to get away with this blatant manufacturing "flaw" if split-screen was still around. We've had hall-effect sticks since the Dreamcast, btw.
hall effect sticks also use potentiometers, i dont think thats the term you were looking for

These controllers are too expensive to have these issues.
The N64 came out in 1996, how are we STILL dealing with joystick drift? Shame on Nintendo.
Companies saw dollar signs from people buying replacement controllers so they cheaped out on the designs to make even more money, it’s not just Nintendo too because oculus also has this issue too
I mean stick drift happens to alot of controllers like most 360 controllers

oh my are you ok
😂 (I broke a ribbon cable, rip)
Thank you for sharing your experience and insights, you're the best!
Another point goes to the Wii U 🎉
I have a whole drawer with a pile of about 10 pairs of drifting Joy-Cons. The fact that they're even legally allowed to sell these pieces of crap for 80 dollars and then argue that drift is not a real issue is insane.

@@ExzaktVid You're forgetting, that only applies to certain countries. There's not a single Nintendo store where I live.

You know why they don't have drift? Magnets.
They purposely make cruddy thumbsticks so we could keep replacing controllers.
Man. The plastics for those controllers were still hard and can take and cause beatings.
That's just Intel's 13th&14th gen scandal but older. NOTHING EVER CHANGES!
Thank you for checking out the video, I really appreciate you!

*"You know... When I was a kid, I used to think you were cool."*
Thank you for checking out the video @lasercraft32 -- there's definitely a big part of me that still wants good things for Nintendo (and the industry / consumers). I hope they can learn from their mistakes!
Likewise, thank you for checking out the video -- I really appreciate you! 👋
Max isnt the same.....
I get *way* too into Smash Bros and Mario Kart 😂
Thank you for checking out the video and for sharing your experiences, I really appreciate you! 👋
it is about how much and how hard you ise them mostly
i finally destroyed my ps3 analogs after like 7 years of use
on the contrary, the xbox wired controller i bought for the pc died in like 6 months, i changed it, it was easy to desolder, but it is a pos controller
i have a old logitech, like 20 years and is still in good shape
not launching them to the wall does help, but some brands do use the worst analogs possible
(I'll also try to continue improving on this front)
Thank you for the feedback!
I got hall sensor stick replacements for my brother as a gift. He was so grateful his drifting days have come to an end.
I knew the controller was going to be defective on release when they referred to them as "innovative"
Just a life pro tip for those who haven't figured it out yet; that's corporate speak for "overpriced garbage"
I'll keep my ears peeled for when they unveil their next console. If I see the word "innovative" mentioned anywhere near those controllers, I'll be ready!! 😂
@@NotYourFriend-YT If it's actually good they'll use "revolutionary" instead of "innovative"
EDIT: "Cutting edge" is another word for "experimental" will probably be really good but also break a lot.
Thank you for checking out the video and for sharing your experiences. I really appreciate you! 👋
The Joy-Cons are absolutely genius in concept, genius in execution but poor in quality.
👏 YES! I completely agree with you Tails ... they are a thing of beauty (I really love small devices ... I'm still using an iphone mini haha), but it's a shame that they have so many issues.
If they worked correctly, they'd be among my favorite controllers ever!
I think one of my Joy-Cons’ LEDs stopped working, meaning that it couldn’t connect wirelessly without the other Joy-Con.
Ugh, that's rough ... I had several pair of Joy-Con drift on me constantly and I know how un-fun that experience was, so I can relate. 😓
Fingers crossed their next console has better controllers! Likewise, thank you for checking out the video @franciscocruzv3733 -- I really appreciate you. 👋
I had a joycon that did that too. Yeah, SL and SR don't work on it at all
@@90sNath That's uber frustrating; have you tried the pro controller?
@@NotYourFriend-YT There's a solution for the buttons not working- you can re-map them. I just figured that out.
I really appreciate you checkin' out this video! 👋
This is overall wrong because it suggests the JoyCons were ever good to begin with, but they weren’t
You had me in the first half, @proggz39 😂
Thank you for checking out the video, I appreciate you!
I think CEOs being unrelentingly inhuman and not caring about anything except profits is bad actually
@@scottcaramel I find being uncharitable about the ultimate motives of other human beings bad as well.... ackshully! 😜

Howdy all 👋 just wanted to say a massive thank you for watching. Please let me know if you experienced Joy-Con drift in the comments (or if you were one of the lucky ones that dodged it) and any funny gaming moments that may have arisen! 🙂
Thanks for watching, and for the kind comments and feedback!
0:50 this is so out of context
Surprised this wasn’t mentioned. Nintendo said that Joy-Con drift was just a trick of the mind. HotDiggityDemon even made an animation about it.
Nintendo's game dev teams: Usually creative, makes things of high quality, and generally kind to their community
Nintendo: Oh, our shitty joy-cons are ruining our console? F*ck off, we're still making bank.
Yuuup, big agree Levi! It's *wild* to me just how many joycon have been sold because the original pair people had drifted like crazy 😅
I *LOVE* your hamster profile icon .. it's adorable haha.)
Fingers crossed neither of experience drift for the rest of our gaming days! 👏

Really appreciate the kind comment, Davin!
Fingers crossed that we _won't_ still be talking about stick drift in two to five yeras ... 😂
Lucky me after several years of playing for at least an hour every day, I've only ever experienced rare instances of very minor drift that was fixed by simply nudging the stick.
I'm happy to hear it DimentiosLoyalest!! (And slightly jealous, haha) 😂
I've had three pair myself that developed drift super bad, to the point where trying to play zelda was agonizing. 🫠
Thank you for checking out the video, I really appreciate you!
The Dock is also pretty shoddy.
Yuuuup, I completely agree @charlessoto1792 -- I remember the first time I handled the dock and realized how platic-y it felt. Definitely didn't feel like a premium product at that price tag!

Nintendo: we have to much money.
Everyone: Fix your controllers.
Nintendo: uh no.
I read Nintendo's "uh no" with a meme voice, haha.
Thank you for the funny comment @sujimatsubackupaccount194! ❤️
Nintendo when two people are offended on twitter: does something
Nintendo when everyone mentions a common issue: nothing
Back in high school I always knew joycon drift was a widespread issue, which prompted me to treat my controllers like borderline hospital equipment (obsessively cleaning w rubbing alcohol, contact cleaner, compressed air, etc). That's literally the only reason I think I avoided joycon drift though, it's truly a testament to how fragile these wimpy little joysticks are.
Remember when Nintendo cared about build-quality?
the irony of getting this recommended after i play on my switch after MONTHS just to stop because of joycon drift
Another absolute banger. You deserve the channel growth man.
They did send me a replacement one but still idl how that can even happen
why the hell did my third party pro controller didn't drift for years but my joycons did
I've had to personally replace multiple sticks in many different controllers. It's really annoying digging through all the internals of a JoyCon to get to the joystick, remove and replace it, and put EVERYTHING back together again.
That sucks that you've had to do that @MofoMan2000, but *big* kudos for you being able to do it!! I once tried to replace one of my joy-con sticks and I ripped a ribbon cable ... so that one was broken.😂
Thank you for sharing your experiences, you're the best!
Nintendo was literally ordered to fix their shit, and they just went 'Nah, sounds hard. We'll just pay the fine. Its cheaper."
Yuuup, and so many consumers looked the other way. 😭
I really hope their next console uses a different type of controller!
My solution after years of struggling and replacing sticks with the typical nintendo ones was to swap them out for hall effect sticks, boom. I also purchased a NYXI wizard controller which also acts as joycons, and it has turned out to be possibly my favorite controller, period. Would've saved a whole lot of money if this wasn't an issue though...
once I purchased a pro controller and the fixture controller mount I never touched my drifting joy cons ever again
100% right there with you Leek-san ... I've NEVER gone back to my joy-con after getting a Hori Split Pad Pro. Trying to play games with drift is a no-go 😂
Nintendo hardware is usually the worst way to play Nintendo games
And my Wiimotes all work just as well as they did day one.
Keep in mind games do not use the joysticks equally, some will overuse the left one while the right one gets barely used, and I do not know of any games that work the other way around (at least on a Quest 2)
I just popped the whole thing apart and ordered a bundle of 5 joysticks (as in, the X/Y potentiometer or whatever ya call it) and simply replace it.
@@NotYourFriend-YT the switch is such a nice console... I hope Nintendo improves on what they have
JOYstick CONtroller, so half the JOYCON is broken
I Bought Hall effect sticks on Amazon and never had to deal with drift again. The real question you should be asking is if Nintendo wants to fix drift when they can pull a PlayStation and charge for replacement stick modules.

yo, the first vid i saw of yours i didnt even realize you were a brand new tiny youtuber. the editing and stylization def made my brain recognize this as someone who's been doing stuff like this for a while.
also, i got a playlist called "we dont forget, nintendo" a couple of your vids made it in ezpz, but it's just a collection of vids that highlight some of the negatives of nintendo. i originally made it cause of a fanboy claiming that nintendo rarely, if ever, does things wrong. it could be a jumping off point for additional research if you need. it covers the amiibo crisis of 2015, nintendo's routine stocking problems, the switch's issues at launch, switch oled reveal, as well as many videos on smash bros among a few other things.
Thank you for the kind words Mr. Nigel! I've been trying to improve something with each new video. The next video I'm going to focus on background music and sound effects (but not go overboard). It's been learning a little bit at a time ... 😂

03:45 - Hold up. Getting the Switch away from aquariums was about the Bluetooth connectivity dropping frequently. I had to send mine in among others. The result was conductive foam stickers on the Bluetooth antenna.

I'm glad you've had a good experience with your Switch Lite, Avarpg!!
No friendly fire... Only *ENEMY FIRE!!!* 😈

They’re to tiny now, my hands get cramped up using them
I actually like how tiny they are (I have an old mini iphone), I just wish my joy-con wouldn't drift so much ... 😂
Thank your sharing your experience, I appreciate you checking the video out! 👋
I actually like the small joysticks when playing smash ultimate, takes less time to go from middle to edge.
@@zadock6370 That's a good point Zadock, I didn't even think about their size when you're trying to push buttons quickly in fighting games. That makes sense!
i end up using the middle part of my thumb to control the joystick
Both of my joycons drift beyond usability but my 4 year old $20 walmart corded controller still works
This guy is just fabulous, he seriously deserves all the growth and views that he can get. you couldn't be watching a better person!
You are such a ham, Dylan 😂😂
The flattery is definitely working!
Thank you for checking out the video and for sharing your experiences, I'm glad you're drift-free!
One of the other joycon fixes was literally put a piece of paper on the pressure plate in the joycon
both the left and the right stick of my joy cons have been drifting for years now. ive only ever used them when i played handheld, which i barely ever did in my switch‘s lifespan. and now my pro controller also started drifting… its so over… 😔
oh dang, I'm sorry to hear that Sunny .. 😭 I've been lucky with my pro controller, but now I'll be on the lookout for any drift that pops up. 🤯
