Welcome to the November 2024 episode of Serial! This month, I’m revisiting photos taken or edited recently. Let’s start with the Pentax Q-S1, one of my favorite compact, interchangeable-lens mirrorless cameras. Despite its aging sensor, it continues to deliver great results. I’d love to see Pentax update this line, inspired by the Pentax 17. The lenses, form factor, and performance are outstanding for such a small device.
I shot low-light concert photos using the 06 zoom lens (70-80mm f/2.8), pushing the ISO to 12,800. While the stabilizer helped, fast shutter speeds were essential. I embraced the grain and chose to keep these images in color. These shots from the In Innipukin Festival in August were a pleasant surprise when I finally emptied my memory card. The camera’s compactness made me nearly invisible, ideal for capturing musicians and candid moments.
Using the 01 prime lens (47mm f/1.9) at ISO 6,400, I shot at Kaffibarinn, another venue. The sensor’s unique grain and ability to deliver sharp results with more light highlight why I love this camera. Its small size makes it as portable as a smartphone while retaining the versatility of interchangeable lenses.
Switching to the Leica M240 paired with a Jupiter 3 lens, I experimented with Soviet-era optics during the Iceland Airwaves Festival. I focused less on photography and more on exploring the lens’s potential. One technique I use is shooting from multiple perspectives to understand my subject better. For instance, I photographed a tennis court through a fence, testing how the Jupiter 3 rendered blurred foregrounds.
The Jupiter 8 50mm f/2.0, another affordable Soviet lens, allowed me to document Reykjavik’s architecture, including the Fossvogur and a geriatric hospital with panoramic glass rooms. These unique buildings stand out in Reykjavik’s skyline, and the lens captured their character well.
On a lighter note, I photographed a Reykjavik cat. While I’m not a cat enthusiast, I enjoyed the composition, pairing the suburban garden with the lens’s creamy bokeh. In another shot, the Jupiter 8 beautifully softened a cozy kitchen scene on a sunny day.
At a Miazga concert, I tested the Pentax 17 alongside the Jupiter lens. This highlights the importance of experimenting with different gear to suit your creative goals. While some say “every camera is good,” I believe understanding your tools enhances your ability to tell stories visually.
I also reviewed the Pentax 17 with T-Max 3200 film, which I used at the Iceland Airwaves Festival. Venues like 12 Tónar and Gaukurinn provided atmospheric settings. I love the rigid grain of T-Max, which adds character to high-contrast shots. In one image, a branch partially obscures the frame-an intentional choice since the Pentax 17’s viewfinder doesn’t show the exact frame.
Switching to the Olympus LT-1, I tested this quirky, leatherette-clad film camera with an f/3.5 lens. Though not highly rated, it delivers charm and functionality, paired with Flic Film Elektra 100 (similar to Kodak Ektar). My initial results show promise, and I look forward to further exploration.
To close, I’ve been working with the TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25 lens, a hefty but impressive piece of gear. Paired with the Leica SL2, it excelled in capturing low-angled Icelandic light during a frigid outdoor shoot. Its sharpness and creamy bokeh make it a standout tool.
