'VonCam' with some gear review or experiments on the first and third weeks of the month,
'Serial' for a recap of last month's traditional photography (digital and analog with lots of films, lenses, and sensors) on the second Monday,
'Matnum' for a recap of last month's computational photography (basically image software development and taking pictures with code for my photo apps Camare, Vica, Digital Paula, and Darkcam) the last Monday.
'AIsHit' are now at an irregular frequency, using great photographers of the past and present to assess artificial intelligence.
The Photocollective dialogues will have new episodes in an irregular fashion after more than 50 episodes. If you have someone you'd like me to interview, please reach out!
Visual experiments from analog to computational, are a pretext to talk about digital matter or silver oxide substrate. I use all gear types, from film to software and algorithmic programming.

Digital Photo Films, QR Codes, and Photo Settings, Examples of Unique Treatments on iPhone.
Welcome to the December 2024 episode of MatNum. This month, as always, I’ll explore photography using my computational photography apps. Before diving into the main segment, here are the words of the month for January 2025: #pain, #trade, and #step. These keywords can serve as inspiration to hunt for photos. Try to find or create images that evoke these themes, combine them creatively, and share them online. It’s a great way to interact with others, compare interpretations, and even invite friends to join you on a photo hunt.
This episode focuses on virtual film stocks developed using my app VKA. With its new version, you can now create contact sheets that allow you to customize film lengths and the number of photos based on your chosen camera. QR codes in this episode will let you import and experiment with these virtual film stocks directly, offering analog-like textures and tones to enhance your smartphone photography.
One of the highlights this month is a virtual film stock that acts as an “AR insaturator.” It’s used in a window shot, adding depth and texture that transforms a simple image into something rich and tactile. Another example features Reykjavík’s iconic hot dog stand, captured late at night. These images highlight how dynamic lighting and thoughtful treatments can elevate ordinary scenes.
Photos from Hafnarhaus creative workspace in Reykjavík, showcase the analog grain these film stocks can emulate. In one, an imperfect selfie with unexpected framing turns into an engaging study of light and texture. Nearby, a shot from inside a Suzuki Samurai jeep reveals how subtle tweaks can enhance everyday details.
At Reykjavík’s Space Station vinyl store, a Brussels artist performs with a theremin during her SIM residency. The virtual film stock adds an experimental edge, complementing the performance’s energy. Similarly, a photo of vintage hairdryers demonstrates how contrasting light and color can create visually striking images. Snow-covered cemeteries and blurry traffic become compelling when the right filters are applied, transforming dull scenes into evocative visuals.
Filters play a crucial role in reimagining simple or “boring” photos. For instance, a snowy blizzard image gains depth with adjusted blacks and magenta tones, while experimenting with random presets generates unique results that inspire new narratives. The random mode in my apps helps you discover surprising aesthetics in seemingly flat images.
Event photography benefits greatly from these virtual film stocks. Shots from Mengi, an experimental venue in Reykjavík, reveal how different treatments can enhance documentary photos, offering various moods and styles. QR codes for these filters are included so you can experiment with them yourself.
This episode encourages experimentation. By letting go of rigid technical controls and exploring filters freely, you can discover unexpected outcomes. Whether capturing snapshots of Icelandic life or experimenting with aesthetics, these tools can help refine your style. Feedback, questions, and suggestions are always welcome. Use the QR codes provided, and I look forward to seeing your creations.

Summilux! An amazing lens, but 95 percent of your viewers would be satisfied with a used lens from Japan costing perhaps 1/10 of this. An unspoken myth on TH-cam is that there is a correlation between the price of equipment and the quality of the photograph. There isn't.
I don’t think it is unspoken anymore but I agree a majority would be satisfied with other lesser expensive lenses for their work / pleasure. While some of my favorite lenses are often much cheaper second-hand asian lenses (e.g. thinking of the Pentax SMC or Nikkor 50mm f1.2 or simply a really affordable Jupiter 8), there is something about these higher priced lenses, not because of their price, but their optical or physical character which is far from optical perfection that only let you get the photographic quality you desire. Same for the camera bodies, you probably can get to capture what you want with more affordable gear, but sometimes it is the experience (and that might be those special “expensive” pieces of equipment - the Summilux and Summicrons are some usual ones). Are you of that 95%?
Zand! You mention "the experience." I think that you may mean the Americans' fascination with luxury and and its labels--Rolex, Hermès, Louis, Vuitton, BMW...Leica. Each of these brands is supposed to confer the deepest satisfaction on the proud owner. If you are an Anerican then you have to have the best. Each of these brands makes you worthy of respect. My 30 year old Timex keeps time just as well as a Rolex does, but it would be deemed an affront if I wore it to a board meeting.
I must say I might be a bit biased as I’ve done some work for Leica and love the gear ;) ( started Nikon manual focus, then Canon for AF and just a few years back Leica because the character and opportunity - but love Pentax and still work on the four mainly ).
Great review, thank you! The Ricoh Pentax site says that the macro range is 0.24 to 0.26 meters, so the zone of focus is only 2cm. I wonder if the issue is that they made the lanyard exactly 25cm but it should be some other length to account for the distance between the focal plane and the attachment point, plus the fact that if you measures from the attachment point to the subject while the subject is centered you're creating a right triangle to the focal plane (or maybe they did that math and made it longer than 25 cm but users are using it in a different way than they expected). When I inevitably buy myself a Pentax 17, which I definitely don't need, I'm going to have to do some experiments to determine exactly what lanyard length I need to measure in the way that I want and then modify the lanyard to match!
Thanks! Yes, it does need a bit of more work than how I tested it in macro, must say I kind of got frustrated by the impossibility of forcing a larger zone focus by means of manual aperture. The lanyard was a smart idea but isn’t reliable enough imho (e.g. a slightly moving object as an insect or flower in the wind is almost always going to leave focus…). Would love them to be able to update the firmware and change those programs on the dial, but that’s probably just wishful thinking from me.. ;)
@@zand A firmware update would be cool! As it is, it's not easy to test since you have to shoot 72 frames and wait for film to be developed and scanned to see the results!
Loving those scans. Results have been mixed for me when left in Auto mode but i've definitely enjoyed using the camera thus far.
the retracting mechanism hitting the sensor is enough for me not to get this lens, thank you very much for the review, very helpful.
I believe Leica had a list of retractible lenses compatibility with modern cameras, but it is still kind of a mess to understand what goes fine or not. I am currently testing an old retractible that seems to not touch the sensor of an SL2 but not sure it would work with the shutter mechanism (which is slightly anterior...) and that would be a shame..
@@zand thank you. I will try to figure out which ones don't damage the sensor. your review saved me from buying the wrong one, cheers.
Thank you for this thoughtful review, your experience using the camera and conclusions match mine.
Awesome to hear. Even thought it isn't a perfect camera, Pentax did a pretty great job on making us a tool that will surely keep an honest value on the second hands' market too.
Back in the long-ago days of film cameras, I had both the FM2 and FE2. Their reputation as some of the best cameras ever made is well deserved. That being said, my Pentax ME Super could keep up with them all day long in terms of image quality.
Yes, it is also interesting to see how well these classics from the days have also kept their creative / functional potential. Thinking of the Digital Modul R from Leica that let you switch between film and digital, I would love to see that for these Nikon and Pentax bodies. I think the technology should be there by now.
I agree that the on/off selector is redundant (one of the few things that annoy me about the Nikon F3). I would prefer if the camera turned on in the first position of the film advance lever. However, while researching user impressions of the Nikon FE2, this exact feature-turning the camera on by moving the film advance lever-was the most common complaint. Users find it inconvenient when bringing the camera up to their face. I would add that the leatherette on the back of the camera improves the feel in hand. It’s fairly easy and inexpensive to do it myself (I did), but I would have preferred if the camera came that way from the factory.
Looking at your pictures I have the feeling that you perfectly understood all the program modes of the Pentax . You really used all the programms Even low light and the results look great for me. So why did you say the program modes are confusing and you never knew which mode you are actually in ? OK - if it‘s dark I sometimes van‘t find my cigatettes …. but that’s a different problem, isn‘t it ?
Thanks. Haha I see your point but I actually didn’t display the completely-missed photos because they basically are kind of black or blurry or not taken (e.g. when the mode was accidentally switched to the ‘yellow’ modes - with flash - the camera will simply not let you take a picture before flash is charged…). But while the results are cool, I did find myself missing some desireable photos I wouldn’t have missed with an old Olympus Pen EE or a Pentax PC35AF. I did have maybe a 5% rate of getting annoyed by my 17 being in the wrong mode or markedly over or under exposure-compensated because of the lack of lock and the fact I could not read where the dial was after getting the camera out of my pocket. Pentax could have simply added a bump on the dials at the 12 o clock position too and that would have done the trick. Doesn’t make it a bad camera for sure, but really annoying that they went that far to forget the basics of the user experience of their own camera heritage.
Thanks for the video. That was useful. You deserve more viewers!
Thanks, I try to make it as truthful as can be. Originally it was to find my equipment, and I thought it might serve others while I go on my own journey ;) Happy to hear that.
@@zand I'm returning to film after a decade of professional digital camera use. These videos all help. Thanks again.
Thanks from all the reviews the Pentax 17 is above the rollei 35af
I’m really curious to see what comes out of my test of the Rollei. I do think for sure these are not the same kind of animals and that Pentax has done a pretty impressive job considering the market context.
I fully agree. Almost no issues with the Pentax, sturdy built, excellent quality and an ultra sharp lens with a precise exposure meter. An extra plus which is unusual for point and shoot cameras: the pictures taken in close-up mode are extreme sharp. Great camera.
Greetings. Congratulations for your video. I recently purchased a Voigtlander Vito, like the one you reviewed in this video. Unfortunately I don't understand which model of batteries to buy. Can you be so kind as to tell me the appropriate acronym. Thank you and I wish you many beautiful photos. Forgive me for any errors but I'm using Google Translate.
“You either love it or hate it. I kinda like it”
Nice video of a great lens. It was first built in the Soviet union in 1947. Mine was built in 1951. I have owned and used it since early 1080. Love it.
It did really surprise me I must say when I first tried it, wasn’t expecting so much pleasure working with it. :)
I ment 1980
Beautiful results and great analysis, thank for it! I'm hesitating between this one, the 50 Summicron “Rigid” and the 50 Summarit 1.5. All vintage lenses to pair my M3. Any advice o suggestion? Cheers
Thanks! The Summicron, whatever version, is quite a keeper in my opinion. Quite a unique precise renderer, with character and overall very well balanced lens. The Summarit 50, which I will do a review video of soon (been using mine for years) is interesting but has too much vintage characteristics and is quite rough to use in my opinion. But maybe that is what you are looking for. Depending on your budget, a Jupiter 3 could be an interesting cheaper alternative if you want that vintage look (should publish the review later today).
@@zand thanks a lot for your answer, I have finally chosen the Summicron v2 "Rigid". Waiting for it to arrive. In fact, I'm still waiting my M3 too. Cheers
I'm sure you're going to love it! Cheers!
Thank you for this review with lots of pictures I would like to know about the SL camera risk! Is it because you are a little scared to collapse it on your SL2 that you don’t or is it because it touches the sensor when it’s collapsed ?
Thanks! On the SL2 it actually touches the metallic border on front of the sensor (the same that doesn’t let you put the beautiful f4 21mm super-angulon sadly). It would probably touch the sensor without it, but will in any case be in a non desired contact.
@ thank you so much for your reply I prefer keeping my Summicron C then on my SL… by the way, the Leica Summicron-C 40mm f/2 is great 😊
Oh yes, I do agree, I love mine!
Great lens. I own a Cosina/Vivitar 55mm 1.4 which almost produces the same nice colours and quality..
There are some cool older lenses definitely needing more spotlight. I believe that was also the era when Vivitar was wondering if they wanted to explore the prime lens market.
Nice video. I had two of them, but as I recall it was a beautiful 40mm f2 as the Leica CL had.
Yes, the Summicron C is a superb lens (I actually kind of prefer it to the 50mm of the same era).
I thought I was listening to Donald Sutherland.
Hey, nice review, I have been looking for this lens so long; please let me know if you are planning to sell anytime in the future! Thanks!
It is a great and very practical lens, a keeper, will message you if I see another one coming out for sale.
They are very good lenses. For the time their coatings seem to be superior to Leica's too. You have a good "eye" I like the way you have seen, composed and caught these images. I have both the chrome and this black and chrome lens and like them both. The chrome is much heavier as ,ay be expected. I too like to use longer lenses for street style photography or events for the obvious reason that they allow you to capture shots without intruding. Too many street photographers seem to think it is some kind of "rule" that forces them to shoot with a 28 or a 35mm. They are missing out on something.
Thanks. I also completely agree with you for street and narrower FOV, but I guess it is harder to frame well without some practice.
Wow, I didn't know it's collapsible on the M240. I may have to get one of these to pair with my TTArtisans 28/5.6. Maybe the smallest 28/50 travel kit possible!
Yes, seems kind of scary when you see how far back it seems to reach, but all good. ;)
I have this lens on my M4. It's my goto standard travel lens. I love it. Looking at recent shots I think it may benefit from a lens shade. It makes carrying a camera so much easier. Having said that I've just bought an old favourite - a Voigtlander 35 2.5 color skopar ii. Using 28mm so long makes me feel quite claustrophobic when using a 50! Thanks for the video. Love the accent.
Thanks! I see what you mean by claustrophobic, I get that with the 90mm vs 80mm.
@@zand I definitely get that with the 90mm too. I sold mine and bought a mint Canon 135mm LTM and added an adapter. I figure with a 90mm that I only need to move a little further forwards to replicate the picture with a 50mm. With the 135mm I find that it offers a significant telephoto effect and is worth the pain!
But if you get the old 90mm collapsible block the collapsible mechanism with a rubber band or lace as it will harm the shutter or sensor otherwise (it's way longer in).
Great review and I particularly love your two frame presentation.
Thanks! :)
Between the 3 lenses do you have a favorite?
I must say the 45mm is just so perfect both in panoramic and 4/3 shooting… even adapted to a mirrorless, it is my favorite of the three.
@@zand thanks for the reply! I’ve got the 90mm and have been on the fence with 45mm…maybe I’ll finally pull the trigger
i actually think that circular flare is beautiful and unique!
Amazing review! Amazing!! Underrated video!! Everybody looking for a XA should watch your video! The photos are really great examples, hi contrast, very technical but accessible review. You showed a lot of different films and how the camera shows their characteristics. This was amazing.
Thanks!
i prefer this by far to the asph , this one has the character, sharpness is not everything! Ask sony
Is it worth it for video?
I guess if you have enough light (or a really good modern sensitive sensor) and are looking for a different look it could, but would probably stick to a more classical lens (where the rendering is more homogeneous on the whole image - thinking mainly about the corner distortion / vignetting) if not.
@@zand thanks
That ' halo ' is the famous Leica glow for all to see.
This is so random but what the little tab you have on the XA where the strap goes? I’ve been trying to figure out how to connect a peak design anker there for my wrist strap
Peak Design used to have a thinner thread adapter they don’t seem to propose anymore. I would try to find some thin but solid loop to atach to the small element on the side of the XA and then attach the PD adapter on it.
I have that one i want to sell it
How much do you want for it?
I just got a new battery cover with a packet of batteries from Germany. I find it odd that the cover has no inside metal contact for the battery plus end which faces out. And the meter doesn't move. Odd thing with the included instructions of the batteries is they say leave the battery out in the air for a while to get it behaving better. I'll try cleaning up the inner contacts with either sanding or steel wool to see if that helps get the battery to work. I hear that sometimes you need to get a stronger battery to get the old electronics to work.
I was able to get one to work by putting some WD40 on the battery contacts with a qtip. Letting it touch in that way for a day or two kind of probably removed some corrosion and then it worked great.
This is a long shot but, I recently got one of these and I don't think the shutter fires correctly when the shutter release is pressed it the shutter moves but does not open. I do not know why this is as everything else works fine in the camera however, I do not know much about vintage cameras. Do you have any ideas about what might be happening?
Sadly I’m not that much of a technician. Have you tried using a fresh battery?
@@zand no, I didn’t even have a battery in it in the first place I figured the shutter was fully mechanical but I will try that. Thank you
@@zandOh! that worked thank you! I figured it was a mechanical shutter.
Its classic, not classical.
Haha yep, tend to say these…
シャッターボタンが横長の珍しいタイプで可もなく不可も無いローライにしては奇をてらわない普通の35㍉カメラ
There was a point in my life where I was really hard up for cash - I sold my beloved FA (with drive) & an 85mm F2 AI lens - biggest mistake to sell that camera body - now looking to re-purchase. I still have my Nikkormat FTN. All those bodies featured were built like tanks - you could drop them in the mud & they'd still function. Digital is all very nice, but give me an analogue camera everytime - it's the ultimate, functional control. Great overview !
Wunderschöne Fotos!
Also, the newer FM2/FE2 is not available for the Non-Ai Lenses due to the absence of the meter coupling lever and simplification of camera building. The Power Check Lamp had also been removed/deleted from the FE due to has lower cost of manufacturing. Therefore, there’s no way to know when the camera will quit on you during a photo shoot. 😢
FM2 used more plastic parts internally comparing to the FM. It’s a lot lighter in weight. The replacement of metal parts was a beginning of cheaper manufacturing process for consumers and profitable for the company. Same goes to the FE/FE2. 🎉
FE2 and FM3a are the GOATs. Aperture priority if you want it. Manual if you prefer to shoot manual. Exposure lock button. 1/3 stop exposure compensation. And in aperture priority the ability to shoot shutter speeds that don't exist on the dial, like 1/325th of a second (or whatever the camera determines the exact shutter speed). With a full manual camera you're sometimes going to be in between shutter speeds so just have to choose to over expose or underexpose. (although the FM2 uses a digital meter in the finder so it just picks whichever one it's closest to... rather the FE2 and the FM3a both have an analog needle to show you precisely the suggested shutter speed even if it's right in between two speeds. You can then choose whether to shoot faster or slower shutter, or throw it in aperture priority and get that exact shutter speed).
Great no nonsense rundown, very refreshing. Actually gave a balanced comparison not a “YuO jUsT hAvE tO bUy ThIs OnE” like alot of other videos
I love my Olympus XA! We’re Olympus bros. Yours looks way cleaner than mine. Do you have the flash accessory too? Can't wait to see what you shoot! If you got a minute, check out the pics I got in my Olympus XA POV Photo Walk video I just posted where I shoot some fuji 400 in mine.
There are various flashes available for it, and for its siblings from a9m to a16, but mostly have used the a11, works great! I did a separate more in depth video for the XA. Cheers!
Beautiful camera! I am super jealous! I have subscribed in hopes of living vicariously through you as you shoot your leica because I'll probably never be able to own one. BTW, please don't be upset if you scroll upon my video making fun of leica owners. It was all a joke for internet attention. I don't want to get cancelled by the film community before I get a reel following.
If you’re patient enough and look well you can get some cheap ones once in a while. That’s what I did at the time, but I see some pop up on some non e-bay sites once in a while.
Leica M5 la mejor cámara de todas!! Es un placer salir a las calles con ella.
Awesome video! Would you happen to know much about the black colored lens? Thank you!
Besides there were only 276 produced and thus that its price is definitely bumped up, not much. I would guess that black paint didn’t feel as much as a protective surface as the silver treatment, that black might have make it look more visible in the environments it was meant for use at the time, and most were really not into it.. But that’s only a guess.
No collaboration with Minolta here on the M5, it was only on R series. This camera was designed and completely developed by leica, like all the others M cameras.
The collaboration was on the Leitz Minolta CL (CL for compact Leica) with a cell-arm that was very similar than the one on the M5, but yes not a collaboration.
Beautiful lens. Heard it no longer gets made but my local leica has some remainder stock. Been tempting to get this beauty due to its versatility
It is a really potent and creative lens for sure.
Love this grainy look!
Such great videos for inspiration
Thanks! :)
