Whether one likes the camera or not it is at least encouraging that Pentax has manufactured a brand new film camera. There must be some confidence in the market place regarding the use of film. Hopefully it will lead to more take up of analogue photography, more film choice and lower prices. Personally I think it’s an intriguing, inspirational offering giving the newbie ( + enthusiast & pro ) to shoot 35mm film economically in a really handy form factor.

    • @brugj03
      @brugj03 หลายเดือนก่อน

It would be more encouraging to me, if pentax was not completely stuck in the past.
I mean, who`s really going to buy this, it`s just a toy. You can`t compete with a toy. Pentax is doing poorly.
And it seems it they don`t care.

    • @robnewton3368

@@brugj03 ; how so? Pentax is owned by Ricoh. Do you not think they’ve seen a change in the market regarding a resurgence in film photography ? Why would they throw good money after bad on a product if they didn’t think there was a market for it. It’s a business. As far as regarding it as a toy, it really depends on what you do with it. A talented photographer will produce good images regardless. Ever heard the term “ all the gear and no idea “. Perhaps if Pentax had put “pro” on the camera your attitude would be different?

    • @brugj03
      @brugj03 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@robnewton3368 No, pro doesn`t mean a thing to me.
My thing is that i can clearly see that film is just at fad.
It`s cumbersome, low quality, non shareable and very expensive.
It doesn`t have any advantages over digital.
In fact i can make any digital photo easily look this bad.
Personally, i think Pentax has lost their minds to make this. They are already far behind and introduce this toy.

Thank you for this. It's such a joy to watch your videos. I really miss driving in utah and this took me back. I just got into film in 2023 with a pen f after a decade of photography. I love the idea of half frame and with the right tools and situation works extremely well. Intresting to see how the pentax will do

Hi, first of all I can't afford the camera at the moment for certain reasons that are not relevant here, but I have eyes in my head, listen carefully and can see when a brand new camera can cause a wave.
I am registered in several photo forums, on several Discord servers that are all about photography etc.
Before the camera came out, but before the first pictures and information were leaked, there was a huge outcry of indignation from many photo enthusiasts who realized that the camera didn't fit into their wish list instead of waiting for the first photos and testimonials.
Then came the first videos from photo influencers with meaningful results and the first negative voices died down. Then came the first results and testimonials from those who were not swayed by the clamor of outrage and the clamor flattened and flattened and flattened.
And now the first of the former screamers have also picked up this camera and are having the time of their lives, sometimes behaving like little children who got what they wrote on their wish list to Santa Claus for Christmas.
Of course, there are still a few incorrigible cholerics, but even they are becoming fewer and fewer.
So Pentax and Ricoh have done everything right and I wouldn't give a damn about the crap from the latest screamers.
    Greetings from Germany

I applaud Pentax for taking the risk and putting out such a nice camera. At first the price seemed to high, but then I thought about how film photographers have really benefited from the second hand market and have never had to buy a new film camera. Back in the day, cameras were not cheap, we had plenty of film and labs to have them developed in, now that infostructure is gone. Things are going to cost more. $500.00 is reasonable and glad we have this today! Thanks Pentax!

I became a pro using the original Olympus Pen-S! Front page of Africa's largest newspaper! Front page, across 5 colums! 1/2 frame fits photo paper better than 35 F.F. I made 8x12" and as big as 16x20"! Sure grain, it was Tri-X old and Rodinal. Many testers don't like the camera! Almost nobody liked the 1st Leica! I think though regarding price, a good Nikon, Canon, Pentax SLR used, with a few lenses, a better way! Great Video.

You can put the cardboard endpiece of the film box into a slot on the back of the camera I believe, something I do with my medium format cameras always so it's routine for me.

@@oudviola Sure, sure, I just don't always have an appropriate box with me when starting a roll - for example when traveling - I leave the boxes off so the film takes up less space. But that's my fault for not being organized (the forgetting part, I mean).

I will never get why people use half frame cameras. Cost saving would be the only reason. But you loose flexibility and tons of detail in the darkroom. A full frame of 135 is already on the limits of being too small for me in the darkroom and I will take a 120 frame over it at any given time. And imagining I would have to shoot through 72 frames to fill a roll, just so I can switch in a high ISO roll in the evening? Quickly the cost saving gets lost by half the roll filled with meaningless shots. But I guess a vertical half frame is perfect for the TikTok crowd to post after scanning, who will likely never get close to a darkroom.

A B-Camera is one of my big goals for this. Pocket it along with a medium format camera, or a digital camera with a telephoto lens, and I’ve got something where I can take less weighty shots.
I really feel like casual is the right term for it. I know a lot of the toxic comments sections say “toy” but toy camera implies an indifference (if not avoidance) of image quality and exposure quality. This is not a Holga or Reto (those have a place, it’s just different). It’s hands-on enough to be interesting to a photographer, but automatic enough to keep things light. A sweet spot for a casual camera for when we don’t want to shoot 120 on a tripod and think about metering.
But yeah, it does feel like there is a lot of toxicity out there about the P17. I think a lot of it is gatekeeping. They want to feel special, and don’t want anyone who isn’t experienced enough to source and maintain a used Canon Demi or Olympus Pen to enter the world of film. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if this often takes better pictures than some vintage models, the meter is better and many old half frame were also scale focus. I think it’s less about the Pentax 17 not having the right specs for them, and more about the fact that new users can easily buy and use it.
Between this and the GRiii with the built-in diffusion filter, Ricoh/Pentax has a pair of hits. The toxic jerks can stay mad while Pentax becomes more relevant than it’s been in years.

I have the Pentax 17 and funnily enough, the first thing I did when I unboxed it was do a smell test. And honestly, It just smells like a brand new digital camera or lens. There isn't a strong smell coming from it. There is a distinct plastic smell when you open the film door, but the smell mostly reminds me of a new Pentax lens. The Pentax 17 is made in Ricoh's Vietnam factory where the Pentax lenses and Ricoh GRiii are made, so the materials used in those are probably the same materials used in the 17...

With how much used ‘very good’ condition cameras cost these days, It made me wish 35mm full frame cameras were still being made. I went for a Nikon FA with 50mm 1.4 nikkor and rear door and seals had to be replaced, which is what I did as soon as I got home, and I ended up spending 700 euros all in all including accessories, but wish I gave that up for a new-new camera in 2024.

i think i started first following you because you are from Portland, like me, but of course ive stayed for the good vibes and beautiful photos. I do have a question if you dont mind me asking. I know you have a small child, (I have two toddlers myself) .. I always wonder how you are able to get away to these beautiful spaces, so often.. Thats the one thing i miss is just being unattached and just going to a place for the sake of shooting. I of course have a great partner, but we both work full time and i feel bad jetting off to have fun and exiting family life. and of course its always hard to get the shot with a couple toddlers in toe. Just curious how you manage family life, and work and sunny 16 and all the travel. and maybe if you have any tips :)

I like the idea of the camera. Sure, it's more than I'd like but I'd like to think I understand that the economics of such a camera aren't simple. Nice video introduction to it. I'm looking forward to more.

I just received this camera as a birthday gift. It feels great in hand, and it's a lot smaller than I thought it would be. Since I've never shot a half frame camera or used zone focus, I will also leave the camera in auto mode for at least the first 2-3 rolls.

This was a great video, I do relise we are looking at edited scans but exposures look nice, I've had pretty mixed feelings about the settings and controls on this camera, but do realise this is a camera for a different market than I belong too, I could see myself shooting it, I just couldn't see myself spending that kind of money, on that kind of camera. It is definitely a fantastic price for a Brand new Film Camera, that almost anyone could pick up and get great exposures with. ❤

I wish Pentax/Ricoh much success with the Pentax 17. For me there are two deal breakers, 1) Half frame, and 2) Zone focusing. I guess a third deal breaker would be the price. You can buy a lot of incredible "like new" well built used film cameras for the price. For example: You can buy a mint Nikon F5 for under $400.

I'll go out of my comfort zone making this comment, but this video had me tear up. Some time ago I've actually been scared of just giving in and watching one of your videos front to back because I knew I would get emotional watching these beautiful, peaceful landscapes and your calming commentary alongside it. This video is great and I don't regret clicking it instead of that other one I was eyeing (it would have been a much more mundane experience). Thank you for making it! Keep doing what you do!
