How I converted my Audi B5 S4 to rear wheel drive RWD
In this video I will show you how to convert an Audi B5 S4 from all wheel drive to rear wheel drive or RWD. To do this you have to weld the center Torsen differential spider gears so that the Torsen stays active all of the time. This will send 100 percent of the power to the rear wheels. You will also need to remove the front axles and install the outer part of the cv joint or stub axle. It took around 3 hours to do the conversion. you will also need to top off the transmission fluid. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoyed it.

Big thumbs up for that specific undertaking!
Mad respect, because an S4 Convertible RWD (manual) would be one of my dream cars of all time.
Although interior-wise I would prefer something like the Merc S-Class W220. (Reminds me too much of an A3 or regular A4).
Good Job! all that power to the rear is a recipe for fun!
Eurospec Bodega thank you very much. It’s pretty fun.
@@GermanEliteTuning where did u get your front axle stubs from?
@@joshfrankel4155 they were removed form and old set of axles. The balls and cage were also removed the them so they are just the outer part of the cv and stub that goes in the hub
I know this video is old but you literally inspired me to rwd swap my b6 s4🤘🏻
That’s so awesome. It was fun for sure.
So is it the same for the b6 ?
@@wiserdvd22 yes it is
@@GermanEliteTuning what about a4 b7?
@@Kaspars.. the ECS kit should work for the b7 manual trans but for sure check with them.
Welcome to the club .... rwd conversion definitely make these machines have new life 😎😎
+Rwdyaudi_taxi thank you very much. It’s been awesome to drive it with the RWD conversion.
can u convert a 2004 audi a8l to rear wheel?
@@Xcraz3dmuff1nsXis it awd stock
@@southernracing2468 yes it is an awd v8 stock?
Definitely interesting that it worked that well. I thought there would be alot of chatter from the diff or the trans
MTK143x yah it’s crazy how different it drives. You can feel some drive train slop when getting on and off the throttle but not bad at all.
Keep up the awesome videos. Can't wait to see what's next!
Dominic Wolf thank you. I’m super stoked to make the next video i have planed.
@@GermanEliteTuning Just hope you don't tempt me to push my B5 harder lol. Stock block RS6/K24s on that Cali 91 oct
Dominic Wolf haha temptation to make more power with a B5 S4 is always going to be there lol. My stock block is holding up well at 284k on E54 and k24s at 25psi 😬
Nice job! I hate you don't have that grab of 4 wheels at take off but 2wd would be fun as well!
Good video Brad!
Thank you 👍🏻
👀
Malaka MotorSports thx for watching guys 🤘🏻
Where did u get your from axle stubs? @germanelitetuning
Well done . Lord Jesus bless you man !
Good to know man tnx for the video
Good job! I would like to ask if the transmission structure is the same as the one in the 3.0T quattro A6 of the C6 generation. I also want to convert my car to rear-wheel drive.
Thank you. I’m not 100% sure if the Audi trans center diff can be modified but ESC makes an RWD conversion kit for the b8 s4 so you can check with them to see if it will work for your A6.
I need to buy one for a 2nd car so dope 🔥🔥
what about the rear drive shafts? are they strong enough to get it done or did you swap some bigger ones?
Now throw some wide drag radials in the rear
Where did u get the front axle stubs?
Looking to do this on my C5 S6 Avant. Will the process be the same? Need to do anything with ABS? Or any stability control functions?
So what did you do to the rear differential if anything?
Hello, I am driving my coupe quattro regularly on racetracks. Stock 100kw. In sharp turns i habe some understeer which I cant get rid of. Thought about rwd conversion, putting Power to the ground should t be a Problem with 100kw, but maybe the car turns netter without driven Front wheels? Or Does driving with rwd suck on an Audi? Winter is mostly without snow so thats no Thing for me... And no I keep my coupe, dont want a BMW... ;)
I have audi a4 1.8t but b6 modell Can we do same rwd conversion on B6 quattro models? B6 is little newer
Thanks
Greetings from South Africa. Will the process be the same for a 2001 audi c5 s6 Quatro transmission. 5HP24A. 4.2L engine
I think I've missed something here. What did you do with the gearbox output shaft which drives the front axle? Did you leave it in?
I wanna do that to a passat 4 motion. But dont you have powerloss at the front ''axles''. There is still power going to the front so not all power goes to the back i think?
It’s for sure doable on a 4mo Passat. Yes there is still some drivetrain loss because the front diff and flanges are still spinning but it’s a lot less then with the front axles connected.
Hi i have question does it work in audis with automatic transmission such as a8 d2 or a6 automatic?
No only manual cars.
Good work, i think the same process could be done on Coupe Quattro/S2 as well? Weld center torsen, remove front shafts
ilikemyboost thank you. I have heard of people doing the same on the Quattro coupes.
Hello, i wanna do same thing on my audi a4, but i dont understand why you need reinstall stub axles? is it beacause front wheel bearings or what?
Right on. It’s fun. Yes you need to have them installed so the bearings do not fail.
Is there any way to fix the speedo?
Great video 👍
Not that I know of. The front flanges stop spinning so that’s why the speedo drops off. Thank you very much.
@@GermanEliteTuning so to convert basically weld center diff and remove front axles what do you replace them with
Great video.
Is there any way to eliminate the rear differential and only use the front Driveshaft/CV Axles?
not that I know of.
Did you delete the shaft from the Torsen to the front drive? (Weight savings)
I know this video is old but I had a quick question, is it possible to just leave the front axles alone and still have it be rwd or do you have to put in stub axles?
You have to pull the front axles and install the stub axles for it to be Rear wheel drive. I installed the front axles and left the welded center diff installed and it sends too much power to the rear still and the rear wheels loose traction. I’ll be swapping in my original torsen soon.
Awesome job bro, hey i have a question for u I have 2000 audi a4 b5 u think is possible becoming into front wheel drive just removing drive shaft, rear differential and rear axle shaft??? U think is safe to drive with that conversion? Thanks
Thank you very much. As far as I know you can not covert an Quattro car to FWD. you would need to swap in a FWD trans.
Why would you want to?
Damn! How about that weld job.
Cool, now you know how your car would behave with rwd.
Remove front axles, get metal plate to close the diff and then enjoy
Could u do this on the s5 to or no ?
I don’t see why not. You would just need front outer cv flanges and to weld the center dif
You only welded the center and left the rear alone?
Luis Rivera yes only the center. The conversion is temporary so I left the rear diff alone.
@@GermanEliteTuning if it's fun for you i suggest to install rear diff from audi V8, as you know, it have torsen there.
@@GermanEliteTuning i have done this mod in my a4b5 1.8t quattro two years ago, this spring i'll do it again. But i already have 6-gang transmission swaped lighter flywheel and some rear diff so i can weld it too and put to my pelican blue "beast" xD
@@danielmurawski9404 i jaka jazda w porównaniu do quattro? Czy naprawde jest tak jak mowi ten koleś że tak jakby oddczuwal lżejszy przód?
Your FB post says you’ll be switching back! Once you drive drive it for a while and learn it I bet you might keep it!
+Carl F yah that’s the plan. I like how the car accelerates in 1st and 2nd better with the AWD but RWD is a lot of fun.
I have a d3 a8 with the s8 suspension i really want to rwd swap
That’s awesome. You should for sure do it.
Thoughts on getting suspension set up for all time rwd ? And of course probably get the correct parts...
Probably add I own a b5 with a 1.8t 5 speed fwd
you will be good with a set of coil overs and an upgraded rear sway bar. you can play around with adjusting the ride height so that the weight transfer from front to rear when drifting a corner allows for maximum grip. im running a set of ST v1 coilovers and they have been great.
@@PHGBellator1 …front wheel drive?…
Before to continuing with the video I want to ask you something, I have an A4 b5 FWD that recently I converted to a manual transmission and now I want to convert in quattro, it's that possible ?
thank you for watching. no you wont be able to just swap to quattro. it will require extensive modification and fabrication to do the swap. best bet is to find a quattro a4 that needs a motor and swap yours over.
@@GermanEliteTuning thanks for your advice
Can this be done to my B8.5 S5. with DSG trans ??
I have heard that it can be done on the newer cars but I have not been able to verify it.
What engine is on this & HP, cheers.
2.7t v6 with SRM k24 rs6 hybrid turbos. I made 530hp and 480tq to the wheels but I daily it around 490hp.
Is there any way I can make it rwd temporarily? I'd still like to have awd for winter driving but I'd like to have rwd in the summer
Fuck Ass unfortuanlary the only way to do it is swap the center diff and remove and reinstall the front axles. Technically you could leave the welded center diff installed and remove and reinstall the front axles when you want rwd or awd but having the center diff locked all of the time could hinder turning at slow speeds. I have not tested it yet just my thoughts
You guys wouldn’t happen to sell them welded diffs?? I bought a salvage title beat to shit rust every where b5 s4 that i kind want to turn into a drift missile
No I don’t sell the kits but If you remove the center diff and take it to a fabricator or an exhaust shop they can weld the gears on it for you. Then pull the front axles and remove the outer stub axles and install them into the front hubs and you will be good to go.
I would like to know if the A4 B8 quattro can also be made rear-wheel drive 🤤
Check out ecs tunings website. they have a b8 manual trans rwd conversion kit but im not sure if its only for the b8 s4.
Is it little faster?
It felt a little faster just after the swap because it had a push from the rear so it was a different sensation then i was used to but after driving it more it was about the same. The lack of traction made it accelerate slower then when it’s AWD.
@@GermanEliteTuning can I do that on my b8 s4?
Is that a sonic automotive dealership? I worked a for sonic owned Mercedes dealer, everything looks the same except for the colors lol
rubioo93 no it’s Penske. I have heard sonic is smiler.
How does it drive compared to awd? (Not just drifting) Awesome job btw
It feels a lot lighter in the front end because there is not any pull from the front wheels. I have 0 traction when going wot in 1st and 2nd and sometimes in 3rd depending on road conditions. A rear lsd or welded rear diff would help that if I was keeping it RWD. Normal driving feels pretty normal and the only way I notice its RWD is when I let off the gas the speedo drops to 20mph and then goes back to normal speed when I get back on the gas. Thank you very much and thanks for watching.
@@GermanEliteTuning this is not usual staff this is complicated job what have you done. You have some skills 👍
Help! Where can I find stub axles!
You can remove the outer joints from the front axles and then remove the balls and cages from the outer joints and those are the stub axles.
Where do you get stub axles?
Mine were removed from a bad set of axles. The outer stub axles were removed from the axle and the cages and balls were also removed.
Brad I got a question bro
Ask away man
@@GermanEliteTuning 2.8 intake cams, supertec valve train or rods I'm working on the new manifold which will move both turbos to where air box used to be..being my options will be more abundant can you rattle off some turbos . That would be a good complement to the setup ..I'm going to shoot for 600 ..I'm being built for at least 750 and and using a water to air.. but I'm just mainly thinking of turbo size...I'm using the 2.7 heads n intake manny..what turbos does the 2.7 push really well before going stk that can accommodate my new engine
Oh man that setup sounds like it’s going to be awesome. It will be or if work but it will look sick and should perform well. Are you going to run both turbos off of bank 1 or rout bank 2 exhaust to the turbos? Rs6 framed hybrid turbos will get you to your power goal on e85 and around 30psi of boost. The SEP automotive rs6 hybrid turbos have been performing very well on the cars I have tuned with them. SRM K24s another great option. Those are what I run on my car.
@@GermanEliteTuning I am modifying clearances on false firewall as well as some other areas..it's a plain as day operation..I feel the true reason the b5 is at limits is bc nobody does something unorthodox..I seen a b5 with a ls and four turbos on the hood..I can def make this work....as I start I should by a camera
@@THERE4LRizz Do you have an IG? For sure post it there and I’ll follow the build. If you need help tuning it I’m down. There have been a few guys that did single side mount turbo setups but not twin sidemount setup.
Hey Brad what down pipes do you have? Never seen some that have those types of connections.
Nevermind you say it in half the video haha... Ya I hate those exhaust clamps too!
There like the old AWE types**
Bryce Peterson yah they are the old xs power ones.
@@GermanEliteTuning dude awesome! I actually like the idea of this now... Looks pretty simple to do too! Thanks for sharing
Hello my friend, is it possible to convert an Audi B5 (front wheel) to a S4 (quattro)?
If you're asking if the drivetrain of a B5 S4 fits in the shell of a B5 A4, then the answer is yes it bolts right in. However you need the ECU , and wiring harness for the complex sensor system of the B5 S4 engine and the vehicle should be a manual to do a proper manual swap correctly.
Why cant we just remove front axles and send %100 power to the real wheels with haldex blue controller hardware? For learning purposes.
Because it’s Torsen and not Haldex
Can i do it for is350 f sport 2014 ?
??
Will this work the same on a4 Quattro 6 speed
Johnny Phillips yes it will be the same process for the A4.
@@GermanEliteTuning thanks I'm building a autocross car and almost finished except for this
Why wouldnt you do rear biased torsen mod for the autocross car..?
Do you know if its possible to do it on tiptron b7 s4?
Anything is possible
Is possible to convert an S3 8p into rwd? Greetings from Italy
Everything is possible all it needs is money and time.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Bro can’t u just pull the fuse for the Quattro system? Nvm, that would give u FWD only...not RWD.
Eüro Nasty that’s only on the cars with 4motion and haldex like a TT, RS3 or golf R/R32. That does make it only FWD. the S4 uses the Quattro system that has a center diff called a torsen diff. Thx for watching.
Dude your speedometer is whack now lol
About the only thing it is good for is losing traction and doing burnouts on two tires. Go buy a 3 series and do that.
Calm your tits, popcorn...
Christopher SCHREIBER it is a burn out machine for sure. I’ll be concerting back to AWD for sure.
All MLB cars should have been rwd
battery voltage is weak
Cyrus Shirazi good eye. My alternator harness has a large voltage drop.
those are some weird looking front calipers you have on your b5 s4. You need some 18z in your life
Poor audi...🤔
Would it be the same for a w8 4motion
Yes it will work the same. That would be fun with a w8.
