    I'd just like to say this channel changed my opinion on TH-cam tech reviews. I was old school, waited for outlets like Anandtech to review things. But compared to ArsTechnicas recent review of the 13" MBP, Max has done more benchmarks, more comparisons, illuminated differences between 13" models as well as between the Air and now 16", sound tests, in depth usage tests... you even water cooled the Air! That's something I'd of expected from a site like HardOCP back in the day.
    And you did that all close to release. Ars just posted their review today.
    The crown of tech journalism glory has definitely passed to professional TH-cam channels like this one.

    So I just got the 13" with the 10th gen i5 and 16GB of ram and hooked it up with my eGPU setup with an RX480 (older card but roughly 30% better than the upgraded 5500M in the 16 mbpro). I have to say this setup is ideal for me. I can essentially dock my macbook to my egpu, and with a nice 27" 4k monitor it basically becomes an iMac pro. Great for editing photos and video, rendering graphics, and even playing games (mac compatible only, eGPU with AMD cards does not currently work in bootcamp, though apparently most nvidia cards do.) Plus, my eGPU enclosure has a sata port internally for extra storage (I have a 1TB SSD installed), an ethernet jack, and 4 USB-A ports for dongle-free connections. Then I can unplug and use it as a notebook machine for notes, web, email, messages, wordpress, etc. Also get the advantage of the small form factor and better battery life this way over the 16".
    Thanks Max, great video as always!

    Are there any differences between the new 13'' Pro compared to the 16'' when connected to an external display? There were discussions about the dGPU in the 16 being used when connected to an external display which would use more power and raise internal temps by ~10ºC leading to thermal throttling sooner. I may accept the hit in performance to have a better experience when using my monitor at home. Any thoughts? Thank you, and thanks for all the informative videos. Very well done.

      The 16” doesn’t thermal throttle. Notebookcheck wrote an extensive review about how good the cooling system in that machine is... and they found no throttling even in their torture tests.
      Yes the dGPU will use more power and all that... especially when pushing an external 4K or larger display. But the performance will remain good.

However I haven't found this to be an issue for me. The dgpu gets hot, sure, but I don't think its detrimentally hot. Hope that helps a little

      @@gradeA50 : Thanks so much for sharing your first hand experience. It does help. At this point I'm wondering if anything meaningful may change to the MBP 16 in June for WWDC. If not I'd likely jump in now as I don't want to wait until the Fall to get a new machine. The problem is, I'm aware many (if not all) PC manufacturers using thunderbolt 3 in their laptop with dGPUs are able to utilize the integrated graphics for driving any external display rather than the dedicated GPU freeing up some of that much desired thermal headroom. Well done!
    I pretty much decided on the 13" MacBook Pro for my professional photography needs. But then I thought "How about a base 16" MacBook Pro?". With the promotions out there, if you can deal with the size, the price difference is much less.
    After your testing, especially the 50MP/Image test, I calculated that the 13" MacBook Pro is about 2x faster than my 2013 15" MBP when exporting images. Which is more than fast enough for my mobile needs. Even my current laptop is 'okay' for my photography. It's just time to retire it. A laptop 2x faster 2lbs lighter will be very welcomed!
    I don't see myself editing big video projects while I'm on the road. Exporting is the big time suck and I can take care of everything else before that part of the process until I get back in the office. Or simply, just export at the end of the day if on the road.
    For myself, the size and weight of the16" wouldn't be worth it unless it was going to be my only machine and I would have it spec'd appropriately. While the performance boost would be worth the price, I just can't get over the size. I can carry a 13" everywhere, all-day in New York no problem. Try using a 15" MBP on a coach-class flight. It's tight. I can fit the 13" into a small to medium sized bag camera/man bag and have an awesome machine for 90% of my needs and a pretty good machine for 10% of my needs.
    Maybe when sit next to you in first-class I'll get the 16" laptop!

    Thank you for this comp. two questions:
    1) what’s the difference in performance and battery life between MBP 20 i5 and i7? Is it worth it to upgrade ?
    2) In general: is it recommended to use a MBP while plugged in or does it hurt battery life in the longer term, because battery goes from full down and then recharges to 100? Is it better to charge and use unplugged or is it neglect able?
    Would be great to see a video. Thumbs up!!

    • @enricocolombo
      @enricocolombo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Al G
      1) the difference between the i5 and i7 is not so much, about ~400 (10%) on Geekbench 5 (i’ve searched it) so also the battery life will be about the same.
      2) NO is way better take it plugged, the battery have less stress, the charger provides to it all the energy needed, it’s the opposite :)

    After using the MBP16, I have retired my desktop already.
    The performance of MBP16 is nearly as good as my desktop (using i7 7th gen)
    Just plug in to a bigger monitor and everything works as good as a desktop
    But I tried MBP13 few years ago and it doesn't catch up.
    So the value of MBP16 is really good for me!!

    I think if you're a professional content creator, you need to get the 16". The size doesn't matter here(get the joke?) since professional work is never done on the run. For everyone else, any 13" is a great choice. Just don't upgrade the specs much as it's not worth it. And MacBook Air is just a waste of money at this point.

    • @heatism
      @heatism 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A.G. Not a content creator, at least not a professional one (ie: making money from it), but willing to learn and there’s room to expand however just got the 16 cuz of its more powerful multimedia capabilities. I’m not luggin this thing anywhere anytime soon and with the narrow price difference this beast would last longer. And if my creative career takes off, it’ll be be future proof

    • @BrianMcDonald
      @BrianMcDonald 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely agree about the size factor. From my perspective the better specs tend to add a little life to the product and wind up being a better investment as you don't deal with performance drop offs over time as severely. The mentality of "max it out for work" was one I followed for quite a while, and it has allowed me to get 8 years of work out of my current computer. I'll probably upgrade to the 16 even though I hate the touch bar, but not completely maxed out.

    • @heatism
      @heatism 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BrianMcDonald hear you on that, i guess if you want a current MacBook you gotta deal with Touch Bar or else go with the Air, which I doubt anybody that cares somewhat for what their computer can do will not stoop that low to. I don't find it that distracting though, it just takes time to grow on you.

    • @BrianMcDonald
      @BrianMcDonald 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@heatism it's more of a specific problem for me where the touch bar makes my workflow less efficient. When I do high volume photo retouching I'm used to using F1, 2,3,4, & 5 to each perform tasks and I do it all without taking my eyes off the screen. With the touch bar you can't rest your fingers on it because it treats finger contact as a button press, so when I first tried a 15" mbp it added around 3 seconds extra per image where I had to move my hand to touch the right key and look down to make sure I was hitting the right one since there is no tactile feedback. 3 seconds may not seem like much but when you are editing around 1000 images it adds up to a lot of time and means you are paid less for the amount of work you do.
      One fix could be to make the touch bar a force touch bar that allows you to enable a harder press only to initiate a key press, but the workaround for me is to just use an external keyboard which is an added inconvenience when factoring how much it all costs but oh well.

    As a musician, for future comparisons regarding the sound quality, I would compare the same section from a song rather than different consecutive clips. Using the same portion of the song keeps the comparison as objective as possible so that differences between highs, mids and lows are non-debatable. Though I will say, the 16 inch definitely sounds richer and deeper.

      Most reviews are claiming that the i7 upgrades on the 13" Air/Pro are not worth it, since the i5 pushes the thermal limit already. However in the 16", the i9 is considerably better than the i7 since it actually has more cores. (The i7 has better single core performance though.)

    So why not compare the laptops both the i7 CPUs? Don't think it's a fair fight if you don't try and compare apples to apples (pun intended). The cost of the 13" MBP with the i7 would get it closer to cost to the base model 16". We all know the 16" will still beat the 13" with a GPU and six cores but I'd like to see matching specs in terms of cpu line.

    This isn’t really an apples to apples comparison. It would have made more sense to compare the 2020 MBP 13 with the i7 to the MBP 16? With a difference of $400, you get a bigger screen, better thermals, substantially better speakers, and a dedicated graphics card.

    Well decibel is a logarithmic scale, and it only measures the pressure. So it doesn’t tell too much, but the amount of frequencies that 16” produces is higher.
    If I’m not too wrong the way we interpret sound would make the 16 sound louder on even if they would output the same max decibel.

    • @alanyu7732
      @alanyu7732 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the difference is less than 10% in benchmarks, so the i7 model isn’t worth the extra $200. what confuses me is why aren’t hexa/octa core processors on the 13 inch. why are they still using quad core.

      I think modeling would go smooth even on the MacBook Air, it even goes smooth on my ten year old MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM (though I only have experience with relatively small scenes). For me, the most interesting would be to see how well the MacBook’s perform when using live rendering in Blender (render while navigating through your scene). I’ve read though that GPU rendering in Blender can’t be used with macOS, it would be interesting as well to see if that’s true for these MacBooks. If so, then does GPU rendering in Blender work when switching to Windows using BootCamp?
