You failed to mention that vanilla OutRun 2 was based on the original OutRun with a European theme, while OutRun 2 SP was based on Turbo OutRun with a race across the States (just to reinforce that, it also saw the return of the Rival feature from the 1989 pseudo sequel).
well, 6 years later I am still watching Gamesack! came back here form the future to update my 3 year old comment. Stay tuned for more comments from the future.
There's a lot of classic Sega racers that had 2-to-8 player network capabilities that just aren't ever coming to modern systems. Daytona USA on 360 and PS3 are at least still functional... for now. Who knows when they'll be getting shut down.
06:13 Released only in Japan, had European release in form of bundle, along with the other Sega Ages entries. It was also released on Dreamcast as part of "Yu Suzuki Complete Works" (also release exclusively in Japan)
If seen this episode literally a million times and I never get sick of it, Game Sack at its best! "Everyone enjoys life a little more with a splash of SEGA" :)
the FB group i'm in: Sega Collectors, has made OutRun the game/theme of March. And i shared this vid because it is just so appropriate and well compiled. Thank you Game Sack.
I love coast 2 coast. It's up there with Test Drive Unlimited as one of my favourite racing games. The original Outrun is also very fun, been playing it recently in Yakuza 0.
16:23 "What a great time its going to be to be alive" -Game Sack, 2012 I'm from 6 years into the future and in our timeline, 2019 is only 4 months away
What I love about ALL versions is the fact that "normal" cars are all driving along at about 120mph. Outrun coat 2 coast has become my favorite for sure. Played it to death on the PS3, and then saw it sitting in a cinema lobby as a full sit down arcade. Played it and it was EXACTLY the same. Aced the left route, drifting every corner, with a kid watching over my shoulder with jaw on the floor lol. Good times. I used to be looking for an original Outrun arcade machine for my garage, but now I'd rather have Coast to coast for sure.
This was a very good history lesson regarding the Outrun franchise. It's good to see that you guys embraced some of the new generation games that were released. Great video once again!
Fun show :p & it's great to hear people who were here too back then. I am a huge OutRun fan & know about most of the home ports as well as the Arcade original. The Saturn version is superb, as expected. & before it the Mega Drive port was a very good & very accurate home incarnation with great soundtrack rendition! & IMO the exclusive track, Step on Beat, is on par with Magical Sound Shower but my fav' will always remain Splash Wave & Passing Breeze. Also this port has a refined car animation which looks better than the Arcade version + a kinda furious, hidden Hyper mode. A great package. The PC Engine port plays well but Joe, it seems that you didn't notice how lacking it is! Gone are the voices; the ocean & therefore the surfers; the clouds at Cloudy Mountain stage, the double traffic lane at Autobahn stage; the doppler effect; etc etc... Overall i was rather disappointed with this version. Oh & about "Why games companies release broken games?", heh, ask to the ones who have released the awful SNES ports of Raiden; Pit-Fighter or Sengoku Denshō! ;> Themed videos are great, i hope you'll do more of them!
I loved Outrunners! I remember playing it at an arcade in a move theater we always went too. After a movie I was playing it and freaking loved it! I remembered seeing it at the rental store for Genesis, so we went to the the rental store they used to have in a lot of Wal-Mart stores and I rented it. I got home popped it in and was extremely dissapointed it was permanently split-screen. I had one other game for Genesis that was like that called Quad Challenge. Both games would have been much better in full screen. Why in the hell would they think it was a good idea to make it like that? Especially considering back then a 32" was a big screen, and you're only getting half the screen with those games.
Seeing how you can now longer get a digital version of Outrun Coast 2 Coast or Online Arcade and there is no guarantee it will return, I decided to order a used copy from Ebay. Licensing issues with video games is probably one of my biggest pet-hates. GRRRR!!!
+WHATISUTUBE I'm with you 100%. I like to support the industry when I can, but emulation and even pirated digital copies of games that are no longer sold new/digitally and have become rare/not available are absolutely necessary for the preservation of games and keeping them available and playable. Aside from "classics" like those sold to us again and again from the likes of Sega and Nintendo, the industry has little interest in the preservation of old games (after all, it is a business and they're in it to make money). In some cases, even if the interest is there, red tape can prevent it. For example, there are cases of copyright dispute or inability to track down the copyright holder (No One Lives Forever and Golden Eye being good examples) or cases such as racing games with real car brands or officially licensed sports games that use real names and player likenesses. With sports games and racing games there are complications such as athletes no longer being under contract and car brands that may have changed ownership or not exist anymore that make licensing them not possible. To complicate matters further, these games also feature brand sponsors in some cases. Those issues aside, even if they could re-license the content, they'd have to be assured that the game would sell enough to warrant them doing so (and I suspect it wouldn't be worth their while in the vast majority of cases due to retro gaming's slightly niche appeal). If it weren't for MAME/other arcade system emulators and the efforts of people cataloguing ROMs/ISOs, the vast majority of arcade titles would have been left to be forgotten about. The same goes for console/home computer emulators and their software. It would be a real crime for these games to only exist as memories and disappear completely one day. I'm so grateful to emulator authors and people that have taken the time and effort to preserve all these old games, no matter how obscure.
With regard to your comment about OutRun Online Arcade, the reason you can only play a trial version of the game unless you're logged in to Xbox Live is because you bought the game on a different 360 to the one you're playing it on. You need to transfer the licence to your new 360. Google will help you here. :)
I love the original Outrun and thought Sega could never top it. Then I played Outrun 2 on the original Xbox and was blown away by how awesome it was. They captured and retained the magic of the original 86 classic while upgrading it to the 21st century with 3D graphics and a new spin on the formula. That was very hard to do but Sega pulled it off. I'm waiting patiently for an Outrun 3. Come on Sega...
you guys are the best !!! love the style, editing, pace,,f/x, script, everything !!!! please dont ever stop making these great Game Sack Videos, you have alot of talent.. wish you nothing but the best.
"I enjoyed this one, despite its massive amount of unacceptable problems. ... One thing I really like is you can change your music." Holy crap. That's Game Sack in a nutshell. Polishing their buffalo chips while tuning up the band on the deck of the Titanic. :-D Holy crap, guys. First you play Sega games, and then 3DO. Even though Dave knows better... he knows Nintendo! You gotta draw a boundary somewhere, brother. I know, I'm being mean. ;-) You guys bring it out! That's why I'm making sure to scour the channel for all the episodes (and their ads) that I haven't seen yet. Thanks A LOT, GUYS. Thaaaaanks a lOOoooot.
There's a lot of computer versions like C64 and Amiga and a DOS version among others. The definitive one nowdays on PC is a fan-made Windows conversion from the original assembly code called Cannonball, it's arcade perfect with fixed bugs, time trial mode, track editor, 60fps, custom music, widescreen, etc.
I bought this game for the 360 when it first came out.I've played it offline on the console it was purchased on (like a few days back), no problem. The full game NOT the trial game.According to the video here it suggests you'd only be able to play the trial game when not connected to xbla..All modes are available when not online.Except of course for multiplayer and leaderboards. At least I haven't had a problem getting the full version when not signed in.
Excellent content for this classic arcade game! Still have Coast to Coast on my PC, what an incredible racer and I still love it. It still looks amazing graphically, with excellent gameplay, and not to forget the legendary music as well😊
Well, wish granted, guys. In case you didn't know, Sega just released OutRun on the Japanese 3DS some months ago. 3D OutRun (3DS eShop) Gameplay Footage
Ha "an Outrun on the 3DS would be great, on Nintendos overpriced store" What did we get?? The best version of Outrun in 3D for £4.49 lol Please do an updated video of the 3DS version.
I had the Commodore 64 port of the original Out Run when I was young, the SID version of Magical Sound Shower always gets me in a good mood. I also purchased the Sega Classics Collection solely for Out Run, and pre-ordered Coast 2 Coast for the PlayStation 2. I even paid $40 for the Sega Game Music Volume 1 to get a CD quality version of MSS! Hope to maybe catch you guys in person and buy a beer to chat, maybe swap memories!
Outrun Turbo Arcade was at my hometown movie theater, and I believe the arcade version of Super Hang On too. Can't wait to visit my hometown, and see if they still have those games at theater sometime.
Damn that outrun game that u can play only in Europe is nice... I wish they would bring this game back for the PlayStation 5 or even 4... even though I know they are phasing out the four
Why does the 3d ages pack (please don't bash me if I didn't get the title right) even exist? Why can't we just have straight-up arcade-perfect ports like 3d outrun which is an upcoming game. And I'm from 2015
The PC version of Coast 2 Coast is the best of all. It's permanently 60fps with none of the horrible choppiness/frame drops of the console ports and you get to use Steering Wheel/Pedal peripherals also unlike on console. Despite buying the PS2 version at launch, the PC port is the only home version I'll play. And I play it every summer.
This game is amazing on the Switch. You can freely choose difficulty and time limit, old and new track layouts, music and even some unlockable stuff for your car that helps with steering and makes collisions less punishing (there are more unlockables but I don't have them because I kinda suck at the game)
"Everyone enjoys life more with a splash of SEGA" Also the bit at the end really cracked me up you guys should make an episode of just gaming jokes i'd love that.
Don't know if you guys knew but there is a PC version of Outrun 2006 and it runs perfectly fine on Windows 10 and in 4K at 60 FPS on a potato. I use a tool called GEDOSTO to force it to 12k resolution which gets downsampled to 4k :). Looks amazing despite it's age at 4K and above.
Been enjoying the hell out of Out Run 2 on the Xbox. Highly recommended for Out Run fans and Xbox owners alike. Plus the game comes packed with an arcade-perfect port of the original (unlocked by simply going through each route once in the standard arcade mode).
"Much worse than an Escort." Impossible I say! I learned to drive in an Escort. You had to turn the overdrive off (and the AC) to get up hills or get up to 55 on the freeway. :)
One more time a great episode for a great game guys! Out Run was my very first racing game experience back in the 80´s, and a few months ago i bought the genesis version. Not as good as the saturn version, but decent enough on this hardware :) keep up the good work!
Man, I didn't remember how GREAT the original arcade OutRunners looked. I actually haven't played that since like 2001 or 2002. And OutRun 2006 is always awesome.
Don't feel too bad. I saw online somewhere that the car that has the most miles on it in the world is/was a Tempo. Something like 2 million miles. I know it was a Tempo but I could be mistaken on the other details.
This game is why Ferrari Testarossas are shooting up in value. About 6-7 years ago, you could get one for about $40,000-$50,000. Now the car costs upwards of $200,000.
I agree that it's not a true Outrun game, but I loved Outrun Europa. It's one of my favourite Master System/Game Gear games, and I love the stage 1 music even more than Passing Breeze, Splash Wave or Magical Sound Shower!
I love the OutRun series. I also have a handheld version of OutRun from Tiger. I got it for Christmas as a kid and I loved it. Still have that damn thing.
I bought a Sega Master System, just to get this game. But only being a 17 year old, I simply couldn't afford much else for it. Also shame you guys, don't have access to anything but consoles it seems, Spectrum, C64, Amiga and Atari ST amongst others, of course had the game as well, would have been great to see as many system versions as possible.
@108Stars It's more or less identical to the Xbox version. The Xbox has better anti-aliasing and stuff like that but the PS2 version definitely holds up.
You guys forgot to mention that OutRun Coast To Coast 2006 was also released to the PC, and can now be had via STEAM network, but the online no longer works, as SEGA felt the cost of keeping the servers running where not worth it, and it has issues with some newer hardware, in which it runs way too fast without some tweaks, but the music in in .OGG, and is awesome on the go, when converted to Mp3.
Although totally unrelated, Vector Graphics based games don't "use" pixels. They're still limited by whatever maximum resolution your monitor has (which is still a dot matrix/pixel based display) but the actual graphics are calculated as opposed to being drawn and can be easily scaled to almost any resolution. Same goes for polygons.
Still remember the arcade version of OutRunSP the arcade i used to go to had It had a Full size Ferrari shaped cockpit which moves according to uphill or down hill it also allows one passenger to sit besides the player, it supported 4 players and was super fun to play
I know they don't include PC games but Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast on PC is quite simply the greatest Outrun game of them all and is utterly stunning to this day. It was taken off Steam but can still be found, and no one is EVER taking that game away from you, unlike Xbox live. To be honest not including it in this otherwise excellent episode is a pretty glaring omission, though I accept they don't include PC games, but when it's the best game in the entire series by far it warrants inclusion.
Outrun is a great series. Even the Commodore 64 port was good. You can include Power Drift, RadMobile, and Super Sega GT/ SCUD Race (arcade) to this list as well, as well as the Daytona series. I loved the feeback on the F40 in GT. Sega definitely had something right when it came to arcade racers. It's part of what made me love racing games. :)
It's definitely a joke directed at Sega customers. MEGA POWER is just the amount of megabits in a game. Sega used this in their marketing a lot especially in the SMS and early Genesis days since their games often had much more memory than Nintendo games.
Here in 2019, I must report that no, we don't have ion impulse rocket cars. But we did get hoverboards a few years back, that mostly burst into flames and didn't hover.
My friend actualy owns the arcade machine for OutRun 2006 (a super fancy version with leather seats and a great sound system) This machine almost broke our friendship thou (since we had a fierce fight when it was put on auction and both of us wanted it rly bad) but he had a lot more space to put it in and i can just come and play whenever i want :]
I'm from the year 2019 and I can confirm that everything in the future is EXACTLY like it was in Outrun 2019.
OK Kyle Reese, weren't you killed in 1984?

Andre Gon (Demonic Voice) *ARE YOU SAYING YOU DON'T LIKE ESCAPE FROM THE CITY?* (pumps double-barreled shotgun and readies red-hot sword)
Rollin' around at the speed of sound;
Got places to go, gotta' follow my raaiinbow :)

Cory Goodman Well, I was more talking to Andre Gon here.
@clays121 We didn't forget, we just basically focus on consoles. That's why we didn't include the MASSIVE amount of old-school computer versions as well. I just searched STEAM and the game is no longer available since Sega let the Ferrari license expire.
I love Outrun 2 on the original Xbox. Such a great racing game!
Interesting seeing you here.
Even I really love is Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast on PS2 and PSP and I'm Outrun Fan
I know Jesus Christ that game I wished I had that game
you failed to mention that Outrun 2 is an officially licensed Ferrari Product. it is also available on the PC.
Passing Breeze is like a nursery rhyme from my youth!
i remember playing this for the first time in the arcades, and couldn't believe it was released in 86. graphics and speed were incredible for that time.
Yes it has great music and graphics for it's time.

Outrun 2019 was spot on, im living in it.
Wow the similarities is indistinguishable.
Well, this was the first episode ever that I ever saw ever. Didn't miss a single one since. 3 years ago! Thank you guys for many good times!
well, 6 years later I am still watching Gamesack! came back here form the future to update my 3 year old comment. Stay tuned for more comments from the future.
Well it's 2022, Dave left a while back. Still watching
I see you've heard of U.S. Gold. You guys do know they were basically the LJN of porting arcade titles to home computers back in the day, right?
Redhotsmasher That sounds like an apt comparison. :)
+Redhotsmasher LJN didn't port the games, it was Acclaim and RARE, LJN only distributed :P
LJN was a massive toy company that distributed all kind of junk for kids to waste their parent's money on.
Here I am in 2019 watching you guys play Outun 2019... Game Sack was so ahead of it's time.
I can confirm that outrun 2019 is an accurate representation of thi year
Yu Suzuki Games are AWESOME!!
I would love Outrunners online now with full 8-player racing
The 360 X Box. No one plays it now☹️

Sega is sooooo good, but Christ their business sense was/is pretty bad.
You need to re-download the license for Outrun on the 360 and it should work offline. I used to have that problem with a lot of XBLA games.

Great review as usual, just for the record: the Ferrari car featured in Turbo Out Run and Battle Out Run is an F40GTO.

I loved seeing all those games being put in the consoles right at the beginning, and the music added to the hype.
Simple but...hey I liked it.
This game is amazing on the Switch. You can freely choose difficulty and time limit, old and new track layouts, music and even some unlockable stuff for your car that helps with steering and makes collisions less punishing (there are more unlockables but I don't have them because I kinda suck at the game)
I enjoy passing a breeze , it makes me feel good inside !
love Dave
"Everyone enjoys life more with a splash of SEGA"
Also the bit at the end really cracked me up you guys should make an episode of just gaming jokes i'd love that.
The saturn version of Out Run! is incredible. I am enjoying all the Sega love. I have a feeling some serious Nintendo episodes will be upcoming.
Been enjoying the hell out of Out Run 2 on the Xbox. Highly recommended for Out Run fans and Xbox owners alike. Plus the game comes packed with an arcade-perfect port of the original (unlocked by simply going through each route once in the standard arcade mode).
OutRun 2019 is accurate. Earth right now looks like mostly fields with lines in it!
LOL....made the drive from Maine to Florida SO BORING....
"Much worse than an Escort." Impossible I say!
I learned to drive in an Escort. You had to turn the overdrive off (and the AC) to get up hills or get up to 55 on the freeway. :)
Splash Wave is my favorite track, but all three are amazing and I cycle them all from time to time.
One more time a great episode for a great game guys! Out Run was my very first racing game experience back in the 80´s, and a few months ago i bought the genesis version. Not as good as the saturn version, but decent enough on this hardware :) keep up the good work!
kinda curious the gba version of hang on and out run is my favorite from that catridge of sega collection on the gba, also great show guys!
Can't believe this series goes back 11 years. I was like whaddya mean 2019 is 7 years into the future....
Happy 30th Anniversary to Outrun!
This game is why Ferrari Testarossas are shooting up in value. About 6-7 years ago, you could get one for about $40,000-$50,000. Now the car costs upwards of $200,000.
@weirdproq1 We took a look at Space Harrier in the episode titled Games With Disappointing Sequels
I agree that it's not a true Outrun game, but I loved Outrun Europa. It's one of my favourite Master System/Game Gear games, and I love the stage 1 music even more than Passing Breeze, Splash Wave or Magical Sound Shower!
Can you believe it's another 17 years without new Outrun game? Now I'm expecting Outrun 3 to be released in 2020, hopefully.
Outrun is my favorite racing series of all time
"Guess what I was doin' in 1988?" ;)
I love the OutRun series. I also have a handheld version of OutRun from Tiger. I got it for Christmas as a kid and I loved it. Still have that damn thing.
Sega Classics Collection also includes Space Harrier, Virtua Racing, Tant R, Golden Axe, Columns, Fantasy Zone, Bonanza Bros and Alien Syndrome.
Who's watching in 2019? @16:08
17:02 that's the sound of the switches in Duke nukem usually in the second chapter lunar apocalypse
Still remember the arcade version of OutRunSP the arcade i used to go to had
It had a Full size Ferrari shaped cockpit which moves according to uphill or down hill
it also allows one passenger to sit besides the player, it supported 4 players and was super fun to play
10:51 close it was $5.99 well done for predicting its release 3 years before it did.
Always loved the Saturn version. Coast to coast on xbox and ps2 is great aswell.
That was the most best info on outrun I have ever seen you guys are awesome.
I love how he even includes the version of outrun from shenmue 2
I wish we lived in a world where Sega had the finances and hubris to put like five identical custom billboards in a row like fifty feet apart.
My friend actualy owns the arcade machine for OutRun 2006 (a super fancy version with leather seats and a great sound system)
This machine almost broke our friendship thou (since we had a fierce fight when it was put on auction and both of us wanted it rly bad) but he had a lot more space to put it in and i can just come and play whenever i want :]
this was one of the first arcade games I ever played. blew my mind sitting down and selecting music lol.
I bought the 3DS version because of this episode. You guys should be proud!
3D Outrun is on 3DS in Japan via Sega 3D Archives. I have it along with a Japanese 3DS. It’s great. This game should have been brought to the West.
Arcade outRuners looks pretty great from the older ones. And has different cars to choose!
I can't believe you're hating on the Tempo! It was my first car and it will always have a special place in my heart
Super Monaco GP is also included in Sega Classics Collection
