After Burner has one of the most legendary soundtracks of all time, much like most of SEGA's earlier arcade games. I suck at it, but I absolutely love After Burner.
Just learned about After Burner Climax after watching this video. Sadly it looks like PS3 and 360 ports were removed just last month. Damn, well at least the 3DS After Burner II will keep me entertained. I put After Burner on the back burner over 20 years and coming back to the 3DS version is a good way to come back to the series.
I just recently got a PS3 to round out my collection and I'm in the same boat. I also can't get the EA version of Tetris, darn it! I still put them on my wishlist on the PS Store, just so I can stare at their game pages every few weeks. I can only assume the aircraft licensing expired. From what I gather (okay, just from reading Wikipedia), the game has three different planes from three manufacturers - Boeing, Grumman, and McDonnell Douglas.
I think it's admirable that you put this much effort into your videos for free. Not to mention the lenghts of most of them. Just makes me not regret that I subbed.
After Burner on SMS was definitely 4 "megabit", if you dump the ROM from the cartridge it's 512k. Really not that much space of course, but if it seemed lacking, perhaps there was dummy data in there.
After Burner on the SMS also had the FM sountrack that you can finally unlock on your Sega Genesis via the Power Base Mini FM. Highly recommend. I bet some of the memory went to that plus the spirts don't have that blocky border seen in the sprites on Space Harrrier SMS.
There was also a version of Afterburner on Commodore 64 by US Gold. The music was done by Jeroen Tel, a Dutch chiptune legend who did a pretty good job making 8bit versions of the tunes. He even included the lead melodies.

It might have been said already, but the SMS port does in fact have the voice sample "GET READY!" When you start. Perhaps they were using an emulator which didn't support the PCM channel. I've seen this a lot with TG16 emulation on TH-cam missing many voices, such as the laugh when you lose a ball in Devil's Crush. In addition, Afterburner on the SMS also supports systems with synth sound chips, such as the Sega Mark III with add-on Yamaha board, or a homemade mod for the SMS. Good stuff!
@crapperstick Definitely a fan of Phantasy Star but that's one of those games (series, actually) that would take a long time to play through to grab footage..

To me it's so good it's out of the scale. Hardly ever you hear something that fits so well to the ambiences that the levels give, is good enough to be listened to on it's own, and has such an amazing kind of cohesion between the tracks (as every zone has a past, present and two future themes that are variations of each other). The U.S. version has it's moments, but it's "there in the background" otherwise. Go for it, it's awesome.
That's cool, but my concern is how beatable the game is. The SMS version allows you to continue only 3 times, and you can get a lot done in 3 continues, but the arcade allows you to continue as long as you have quarters. I had no idea there was a PS2 version i gotta check that out, how many times can you continue?
I'm not sure how many continues are in the Playstation 2 version I played it at a friend's house and never owned it myself,the Sega Genesis version however can make you invincible to breeze through the game if you have the Game Genie.

How to play After Burner on the SMS: Get a rubber band or something that will hold the control pad either left or right. make a sandwich. eat the sandwich. I believe it was Stage 12 that you had to actually start playing but you only had to press up and/or down to finish the game.
Got a copy of the PC Engine version coming in the mail. Interesting how so many Sega arcade games made it over to the PC Engine/Turbografx when they were a competitor at the time.
I might not have sat through an entire 20 minute video for a Sega game...come on I wouldn't want spend 20 minutes playing Sega game. But you two are just so charming I couldn't stop watching, and at least you mentioned Nintendo for a minute or two.

In the 80's all I had to do was watch Top Gun or an Iron Eagle movie and I was all pumped up to go over to the arcade to play After Burner. So much fun but it ate quarters and I never had enough money to finish the damn game. In recent years I went back to try the arcade version again and to be honest it hasn't aged well. You get bored pretty quick with it. I used to own the SMS version and the one on Genesis. Those both are really boring when I play them now.
I just played this last week. I told my nephew these games were big back in my day. I have to agree with you to a certain extent. They havent aged too well and even the nostalgic factor doesnt help much with this one. This is coming from a Super Sega Fan Boy.

I think you guys should've shown the main appeal for playing these games, the arcade machines! The original Afterburner arcade was a 360 degree spiraling monster! You jumped into the cockpit and it was really fun to play. Afterburner Climax also had a cool arcade machine but not as epic as the original Afterburner. I think in future episodes you should give a bit of history on the games, the creators, and the arcade machines. It's a missed opportunity in here and the outrun episode.
Just found a Genesis copy of After Burner 2 a few weeks ago. Guy was selling it cart only for $15 so I passed on it, good thing I did as just 4 days ago it turned up again at my favourite local game shop complete for only $10. It was okay but I prefer the PC-Engine version more.
After watching almost 95% of all the Game Sack episodes (as you can see from the date this is posted) I'm not going in order, but I can say with certainty that the huge letters whener MEGA POWER pops up, never gets old. It's just too rad.

AB Climax is a very highly rated game and one of the best PSN titles. Personally I think After Burner is best played where it was meant to be played, in the arcade in a sit down cabinet. Personally I like G-LOC better but because I loved playing the 360 degree rotating cabinet. (if you can find one you gotta try it) If you are gonna do these Sega franchise I would love to see a Sega Racer Retrospective. They have had some some great ones. I loved playing ABII in the arcade. When I saw Climax on XBLA I bought it and wasn't disappointed. I've hoped that After Burner would turn into a fast paced Star Fox clone but it will never happen. Sega views it as an arcade quarter eater and will never invest into a thought out story with real characters and more diverse game play.
I never really get into after burner games. I hate how you want to aim at something and you need to do it turning the airplane sideways, and how the screen turns along, it's annoyingly chaotic, and this made to dodge enemies and fire at them in the same time impossible.

When you are talking about a game and you know it's a digital ONLY game, can you put something on the video that lets us know when you show the title? I'm still old school thinking that every game has a physical copy. Been out of gaming for a while, so I spent a good 1/2 looking for After Burner Climax for the PS3 and finally realized it was a digital download only game. @GameSack All these years, and I never knew that! I started playing Afterburner in the arcades in the late 1980's (1986, maybe). That was the same year I got my Master System. I just remember playing the first game a couple of times and then poof it was gone, replaced with Afterburner 2 cabs (mostly sit down models). I saw plenty of Space Harrier and Space Harrier 2 cabs next to each other, so it always struck me as weird. Now, I know the full truth. Thank you Game Sack!
On the Sega Master System? Ok It works great, and plays that way due to technical limitations But on the PSP? Why? Ace Combat did it Better as a arcade flighting game by giving you FULL control of the aircraft
I begged my parents to buy me a Master System for Christmas, just to play After Burner. I never even knew about After Burner Climax, but damn, five dollars to play a game. For 5 dollars, you can buy a 20 piece Chicken McNugget at McDonalds with barbecue dipping sauce. You could also donate it to charity, but I'd rather have the 20 piece Chicken McNugget with barbecue dipping sauce..
My first video game soundtrack was Afterburner II (😳) it was a cassette 'cover tape' that UK mags sold with (and inexplicably brought with me to 🇨🇦😬). After that, I've always paid attention to what and how the music is used. I've included some game OST's amongst my favourite albums 👌

They did the same thing with Galaxy Force and Galaxy Force 2! Very similar games... it's just the 2nd one is actually finished!

All these years, and I never knew that! I started playing Afterburner in the arcades in the late 1980's (1986, maybe). That was the same year I got my Master System. I just remember playing the first game a couple of times and then poof it was gone, replaced with Afterburner 2 cabs (mostly sit down models). I saw plenty of Space Harrier and Space Harrier 2 cabs next to each other, so it always struck me as weird. Now, I know the full truth. Thank you Game Sack!
On the Sega Master System? Ok It works great, and plays that way due to technical limitations
But on the PSP? Why? Ace Combat did it Better as a arcade flighting game by giving you FULL control of the aircraft
pffft .. they sooo should have competed against Star Fox !!! Except bein the usual arcade-only full experience

I begged my parents to buy me a Master System for Christmas, just to play After Burner.
I never even knew about After Burner Climax, but damn, five dollars to play a game. For 5 dollars, you can buy a 20 piece Chicken McNugget at McDonalds with barbecue dipping sauce. You could also donate it to charity, but I'd rather have the 20 piece Chicken McNugget with barbecue dipping sauce..
My first video game soundtrack was Afterburner II (😳) it was a cassette 'cover tape' that UK mags sold with (and inexplicably brought with me to 🇨🇦😬).
After that, I've always paid attention to what and how the music is used. I've included some game OST's amongst my favourite albums 👌
I like how Dave flames after burner but Joe just shrugs it off XD
@rd1979 The sad thing is, there are PSN games that require you to be online to play at all, no matter what. Final Fight Double Impact on PSN is famous for this.
