Japanese region of Saturn Outrun comes on one disc and has redbook audio of music. Plus 60fps update via cheat code. Sega Ages Vol.1 doesn't have the redbook audio but has Outrun/Space Harrier/Afterburner II on one disc. Saturn port also has authentic arcade startup/experience via cheat code. I would argue its the best version technically (aka its not emulated so has unique nuances) the Switch port is emulation but what makes it impressive is how M2 remixed the ROM's they used to give extra music/features. Sound emulation is always scratchy/not good with these types of releases. M2 did a good job with the sound on the Switch port and the music is a highlight but if you want 100% you will probably notice the differences. Wish Sega would expand the budget on the Sega Ages releases just a bit so the presentation is more polished just a tad. But SA ain't selling brilliantly so doubtful we'll see many more ports or patches for existing games. Recommend the SA games on Switch to anyone reading/watching this and hope that sales pick up so we get ports of more expansive games like Daytona/Scud Race/Outrun 2 and the like. I remember this game on the C64. I had a tape cassette from an old C64 magazine that had the original arcade music on it. It was fun playing the cassette while playing the game. Musical sound shower 👏😍
OutRun 2006 is absolutely my favorite of the series by a country mile. A blast to play, so you won't hear any jeering from me on the OutRun 2 front! This was fantastically informative; good work!
This series means the world to me just as much as Sonic the Hedgehog, so seeing all the games, especially Outrun 2, really brought me back. This complete history rocked.
I'm really glad you included footage of Yakuza 'cause as someone who never owned any Sega consoles growing up, my first time actually playing OutRun WAS in the Yakuza 0 arcade, and honestly...I loved it. It was probably the one arcade cabinet in that game I went back to the most. Awesome and informative history lesson as always, dude.
Outrunners was actually the first game in the series that I played. My cousins hometown had a duckpin bowling alley with all kinds of fun arcade games, prizes, and a snackbar with pretty good pizza. Sometimes I'd give up on the bowling and play the Outrunners machine for three hours straight 🤣💀
I forgot how much I liked Outrun. I had Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast for the PS2 but sold it because it takes up alot of space on your memory card. I re-brought the title along with a new memory card and I'm glad I did.
@guyver 36 yeah, it's £12 in and all games are on freeplay. They have an original Pong, Warlords and an absolute stack of other classics as well as obscure Japanese stuff and pretty much all the streetfighter machines ever.
@@WebstersTH-cam If you are making a special journey then Arcade Club Bury is the one to go for though - Leeds is great but Bury is bigger and better. They both have plenty of games unique to that location though so a trip to both is the way to do it, you certainly won't regret it.
@@techreviews6690 That's going on the list, cheers! I hear good things about Timewarp Arcade in Bridgwater too. Might have to do a bit of a roadtrip when this virus business is over.
It's £16, not £12.. But otherwise you are correct, alongside Hydraulic Outrun, there's a stand up version on the second floor. Plus Scud Race is literally right behind the hydraulic Outrun unit. Anyone who's never been Arcade Club must check it out once we're all allowed back outside!
I have never played this game before, but it's music and general aesthetic is sublime. I only really discovered it through my love for Synthwave music (a musical derivation of the game's soundtrack). Needless to say, Outrun is a very special game--an experience.
I love outrun so much, I bought a £100 steering wheel setup...just to play this game. I bought a real size marquee (mounted over the screen and wheel disk and am as close to the the basic sit down experience with a 21" screen without actually paying £2000 for a genuine machine. Missed out on buying one for £150 some time back.....big mistake. Favourite game ever.

Outrunners is my favorite OutRun game. Spent a summer in the early 90s playing it in an arcade daily and loved it. Was sad I could never find it again after that summer.
Loved Outrun, Could have bought a house with all the money I spent on it in the arcades. I also agree outrun 2 was AWESOME. Never new about some of the ones you mentioned like outrun 2019. Again appreciate the hard work you put into the videos!! Keep it up Daniel :)

I just added this video to a Sega Ages: Outrun 1996 playthrough. This is the most comprehensive and informative video on the subject. Thank you for this.
Thanks for using my music. :) OutRun 2006 is my favourite too, and I quite like 2019, though it's probably more of an acquired taste akin to something like Streets Of Rage 3. Loads of great music tracks in the series though. My favourite is Passing Breeze, and the 2/2006 version of Rush A Difficulty and the instrumental Life Was A Bore.
I agree 100% Outrun2 is the perfect Outrun game. I remember my buddy Matt telling me it was out and we drove down to Westward Ho and played it all day. Still have the Xbox live and Xbox original too! I also had battle Outrun as a Kid. I loved Chase HQ and it was cool driving in the back of the truck at the end of the stage (Forgot all about that until I saw your video!) Good memories man
Loved the original hydraulic cabinet in my local arcade. Was more pricey at 30p a credit though ! Only played Outrunners there many years later a few times though. Still play Coast 2 Coast regularly on original Xbox. Great video. Cheers.
Thank you so much for this Slope; excellent tribute to one of Sega’s best (and one of my favorite franchises of theirs too). I finally got a copy of OutRun 2006 Coast to Coast on Xbox a few months ago and it was totally worth it. I wish OutRun Online Arcade was still up, though it’s on my 360 too.
Outrun is the point 0 of the synthwave movement! Kavinsky, one of the first if not the first at all synthwave artist took inspiration from outrun and in specific from the Splash wave track! Check it out! Almost the same notes in his most famous songs❤️🙌
OH MAN the music from Shadow Dancer used at 15:05 was perfect. I love that game so much. LOVE THIS VIDEO. Outrun has a special place in my heart. Killer content as always bro
Excellent work, DJ Slopes! I loved watching this and I do love Outrun quite a lot myself! Keep posting awesome material like this, cause I love your channel!
Great episode i loved it. Outrun 2 is my favorite game ever. As years pass i just see myself coming back to it. You didn't mention cannonball, it runs the original rom while adding some cool customisation and modern resolutions support
My complete history with Outrun, once bought an MSX module with hacked on disk drive, just, a bunch of cables soldered on, which happened to have a disk inside. Plopped that, out of curiosity, into a PC, and lo and behold, inside was Outrun. Still puzzles me. Great video, fun history. :)
Amazing video thank you. I’m with you Outrun 2 and it’s variations are epic. I can’t decide whether this or another Sega contemporary F Zero GX is my favourite racing game ever. What a period that was for arcade racing - in less than 2 years we got Outrun 2, F Zero GX and Burnout 3! Never seen the like since
Nice coverage of one of my favorite series! I feel like the Saturn version got a little bit of a short shrift as far as the home releases go. It has original and arranged music, a code to enable 60FPS mode, configurable traffic patterns, and the original Testarossa car art. Compared to the prior home versions it really blew them all away. Now that all the later variations (including the Yu Suzuki Game Works Vol. 1 for Dreamcast that wasn't covered) have the revised car art, I think it's the closest to the true arcade experience we've been given at home.
I agree that Outrun 2 is even better than the original Outrun. One summer in college, I was lucky enough to have an internship in an office next to an arcade and a boss that was traveling all summer. Hello, three hour lunches playing the brand new Outrun 2!
Outrun 2006 for PS2 was just so amazing and I still play it once in a while on PC. This was what I call a proper sequel and upgrade. I truly wish they made a new one.
Out Run has to be one of the most replayable games of all time. I played it sparingly when it came to the arcades, as it costed FOUR TIMES the price of a regular price (think about 4 quarters instead of 1), but it was the full cabinet, with the moving seat, it was AMAZING. Then I got the terrible conversion for my MSX. Now I play it in everything, be it MAME, or the better versions, Saturn or 3DS. One of the things that the current generation is missing is the arcades. We LIVED there. I would spend 2-3 hours there watching people play (the twitch of the time), with or without friends. Heck, you ended up being friends with the people that went to the arcades.
Outrun 2019 was my first exposure to Outrun franchise. I love this game and its soundtrack to this day. Maybe, it is my favorite Outrun game. Nostalgia and all. I do play the original on 3DS quite often too. And I have played a buttload of Coast 2 Coast on PSP and PC. And I think I'm going to play it again after watching this video, and nobody is going to stop me!
I found a vintage Outrun machine a few years ago and my jaw dropped. I shuffled toward it like a zombie, "must play, must play." My friend thought I was nuts. It was double the price of all the other vintage machines (this place had a lot of them) and the screen was tinted green because the CRT monitor was so old and would probably die soon. "That's when you know it's vintage," I argued back, inserting my quarters and having a hell of a time even though I owned the Ages port on the 3DS.
Very impressive video. And same goes for that line-up in the beginning. You've covered a LOT of different SEGA series, but where's our Panzer Dragoon retrospective! That series deserves so much love.
I immediately recognized that Outrun song. It's the song that plays most often while driving my Jeep in Fist of the North Star on PS4 that was developed by the Yakuza Team. It is easily the most played song while free roam driving in that game.
Monacco gp is a gem, but loved turbo and then pole position, and classic outrun, and outrun 2 and special tours great games, seems retro is still popular lots of arcades are opening up.
The Mark III versions also support the Paddle control if you hold the button down when booting the game up. Only works on Japanese consoles, or if you do the FM mod on your SMS it'll work with the region switch. Outrun 3D with the FM sound, 3D glasses and Paddle control is something to behold.
Hey Daniel, if you're ever in Liverpool after all the pubs re-open, they have one of those giant OutRun SP SDX machines (albeit with only the two Ferrari cockpits) in a new arcade pub called "Arcains". It's on the site of the old Cains Brewery, Parliament Street.
I recently acquired 2006 on PC and after a few tweaks is fantastic in 4K with rumble and additional cars and tunes. This type of game really needs to make a come back.
outrun 2 sp sdx wasn't brought to windows by "modders" but by talented coders experienced in reverse engineering. It's a miracle of software development that runs a linux based arcade game on windows with zero bugs. Worth checking out.
Killer episode! As a top leaderboard time attacker back in the online arcade version years ago on the 360... I still play Outrun regularly. This episode has so much information I did not know. Thanks for that! Looking forward to your Daytona USA episode!
I'm so glad you got to this. I played OutRun Europa on Game Gear and I just checked a review on a different channel to make sure it was this game that I played so long ago and I actually liked it! I agree with the other reviewer though, it was fun and I enjoyed it but I wouldn't play it again. The music was bumpin' though. The motorcycle driving theme is a pretty nice action driving tune
They had Outrun 2 SP SDX in the Derby Intu shopping centre about 10 years ago i think it was. That had 4 linked units with the sit in cars on motion bases. Its funny because i got to be able to finish that game but i still havent got to the end of the original Outrun, ive come close but not quite made it many times. Games were tougher back in the 80s. After bearly 40 years ive only just finished R-Type and R-Type 2 for instance. And that took many hours of practice that i had spare due to being off work after having a heart attack.
Love of gaming started with this game... not my first title but this was where I remember first watching a game aghast at how awesome it was! Don't even get me started on the soundtrack, still a complete set of bangers today
Dan, you should research the 1995 SEGA arcade game Cool Riders. It is basically Outrunners on motorbikes (even borrowing many assets) and is stupidly rare! It is only one of two games to use the H1 board, which was the last Super Scaler board. I’ve always loved Outrunners and was blown away when I found out this exist. I purchased the arcade board over a decade ago and have never tried it. One day though!
Oh man, I played outrunners in an actual arcade cabinet in mexico a few years ago, I didn't understand a single thing on how to play it and was pretty intimidated by how big and loud it was, the visuals were really pretty
I think I've played on that cabinet shown right near the end (in Bridlington). It's got a cool gimmick where two people share a car and if one player crashes / drives off road too long, the other player takes over the driving controls.
I do have outrun 2 on PS2, I found it at a pawn shop for $1USD! couldn't believe that's all they were asking for a cib copy. I did also grab SEGA AGES OutRun on Nintendo Switch... indeed an amazing port! great to see the backstory of this legendary racing series from SEGA!
Shame you didn't mention Cool Riders, I was wondering about how that fits into the timeline being a spiritual sequel to Outrunners and very much part of the series, always was curious how this game did being how it's obscure, and how it came to be.
Hmmm... watching this may want me to make a video on cracking Out Run or beating the standing high score (any way possible). I used to love this game! We moved a lot and the summer of 1987 we moved to a different town in the middle of the summer holidays. So this machine became my new friend, until school started again.
Played it 1989, loved it then played it again 2002 and bought sega mega drive to own the game, then 2004 outrun 2 and outrun special tours amazing game completed five levels on ps 2, but last year when i played it at arcade only conpleted one level, oh well this year im playing it again wish my luck.
I first played Out Run on the Atari ST (16-bit computer), and I have fond memories of it because it was Out Run, very cool setting, fun gameplay, and incredible music. At the same time I was aware that in terms of technique, it was average, the frame rate was disappointing, it wasn't terrible but not among the best racing games on the Atari ST. Recently I got back playing the game with the port of the arcade version on Switch. Amazing game, still extremely fun, challenging, and enjoyable today.
Thank you very much for the long overdue complete history of OutRun. Was about time. To bad, that you missed talking about the amazing soundtrack of the C64 port of Turbo OutRun by Jeroen Tel (yes, you played the intro song "magical sound shower"). My personal favourites are OutRun (arcade), Turbo OutRun (arcade)&(C64) and the amazing OutRun Online Arcade (Xbox 360)(second best player after the insanely good player F40) One of the best ports of the original OutRun was for Dreamcast on the Yu Suzuki Gameworks disk. Runs at 60 fps and is a perfect arcade port, since they used the original code and assets of the game for the port. Again, thank you for the video. If it was up to me, you could have gone deeper into the history of the games and all the ports, but that would have made the video about 20 hours long. Thanks and keep up the good work. OutRun forever!
My favorite racer of all times!! The music is timeless. One of the arcade games that made me a lifelong Sega fan. I'm also partial to Rad Racer on the NES. ;)) BTW; this has been my favorite episode. Keep up the good work
"Never be frustrating" Yeah right, now try getting to the end of any route in the original game. You can only do that if you don't crash to the outside barriers or other cars. I also found out that getting a score in Super Hang-On is easier than getting the exact score in OutRun. They should've thought about this when making the goals in the Yakuza games. (which you might cover in some years) Also, OutRunners somehow made some parts of Suzuki's wish for the original game came true (the one where he wanted multiple cars to be available to play)
@@Bakerstreetgaming yeah it's one of the hardest racing games. I'm good at more modern ones. But Outrun you have to be absolutely perfect to get past even the first stage. You can never crash. I mean it's an arcade game, that's the point, to eat coins
Im currently playing OUT RUN on Judgment, in this game the protag got the Out Run arcade in his office. I could never finished Out Run back in the day in the arcade. I was just a kid with 4 quarters 😂
nice to hear jenovi on this video, his retro impressions series and the senna documentary he did are underrated on youtube, great to see him on one of your videos!!
Before it shut down the Trocadero had the Outrun 2 SP SDX cabs. It was fun when playing in the 2 driver mode that made you switch when you crashed or reached a checkpoint.
I'm all like, "WHERE DO I RECOGNIZE THIS GUY'S VOICE FROM?!". I feel like a fool for not looking up your channel after all those Bundy appearances. Subbed
For any Outrun/SEGA arcade racer fans who come to Tokyo, check out GiGO #3 in Akihabara. Last I checked, they had Outrunners and Outrun2SP, as well as Daytona USA 2 and SCUD Race!
The 3DS and Switch versions can’t be the best, when missing something of the most important that defined Outrun in the first place, the Testarossa. Therefore the Saturn port by Rutubo Games was and still is the best official port ever. And it has 60fps as well.
4:46 "America being too violent for Sega of Japan" and people honestly think it was Sega who worked with the Yakuza when apparently the Yakuza doesn't even exist in their minds.
I had an experience with Out Run in which I saw the original arcade and I asked my dad to hand me some quarters. He refused and the arcade later on became a ballerina class.

Never stop
I found a vintage Outrun machine a few years ago and my jaw dropped. I shuffled toward it like a zombie, "must play, must play." My friend thought I was nuts. It was double the price of all the other vintage machines (this place had a lot of them) and the screen was tinted green because the CRT monitor was so old and would probably die soon. "That's when you know it's vintage," I argued back, inserting my quarters and having a hell of a time even though I owned the Ages port on the 3DS.
Your friends needs to learn :P
Very impressive video. And same goes for that line-up in the beginning. You've covered a LOT of different SEGA series, but where's our Panzer Dragoon retrospective! That series deserves so much love.
Iam probably one of the few who loved Outrun 2019.
I immediately recognized that Outrun song. It's the song that plays most often while driving my Jeep in Fist of the North Star on PS4 that was developed by the Yakuza Team. It is easily the most played song while free roam driving in that game.
OutRun 2 is by far my favorite Racing/Driving Game. The Music, the Graphics, the Feeling.... pure enjoyment
Couldnt agree more
Good to hear PatmanQC on this video. He has a great little channel that deserves and is worth a subscription.
You did it!! Great job! Outrun has to be the first Sega game I would break a dollar to play regardless if it was my last or not. Such great memories.
Not really.
Absolute belter as always.
I recently acquired 2006 on PC and after a few tweaks is fantastic in 4K with rumble and additional cars and tunes. This type of game really needs to make a come back.
I have to get Out Run Coast to Coast now. Thanks for the video.
outrun 2 sp sdx wasn't brought to windows by "modders" but by talented coders experienced in reverse engineering.
Glad the hardcore crew such as yourself enjoy it :D
I really hope Sega releases the sequels to Outrun one of these days.
Yu Suzuki's talent is unrivaled. Thanks for the great video.
Well nowadays maybe he's being too auteur.
Shame you didn't mention Cool Riders, I was wondering about how that fits into the timeline being a spiritual sequel to Outrunners and very much part of the series, always was curious how this game did being how it's obscure, and how it came to be.
I loved 2019.. that noise when the booster on the back kicked in.. aah..
Hmmm... watching this may want me to make a video on cracking Out Run or beating the standing high score (any way possible).
My personal favourites are OutRun (arcade), Turbo OutRun (arcade)&(C64) and the amazing OutRun Online Arcade (Xbox 360)(second best player after the insanely good player F40)
One of the best ports of the original OutRun was for Dreamcast on the Yu Suzuki Gameworks disk.
Actually the best port is on Sega Saturn, can chose between 30 or 60 fps, and it has the Ferrari.
I recently discovered a massive obsession for OutRun games thanks to Horizon Chase Turbo. I can't stop playing Outrun games now
Great video! I love recognizing the cameo voice appearances
My favorite racer of all times!! The music is timeless. One of the arcade games that made me a lifelong Sega fan. I'm also partial to Rad Racer on the NES. ;)) BTW; this has been my favorite episode. Keep up the good work
"Never be frustrating"
Yeah right, now try getting to the end of any route in the original game. You can only do that if you don't crash to the outside barriers or other cars.
I also found out that getting a score in Super Hang-On is easier than getting the exact score in OutRun. They should've thought about this when making the goals in the Yakuza games. (which you might cover in some years)
Also, OutRunners somehow made some parts of Suzuki's wish for the original game came true (the one where he wanted multiple cars to be available to play)
Muammar Gibran I still can’t complete outrun
@@Bakerstreetgaming yeah it's one of the hardest racing games. I'm good at more modern ones. But Outrun you have to be absolutely perfect to get past even the first stage. You can never crash. I mean it's an arcade game, that's the point, to eat coins
As someone currently playing Judgement on and off, I think the goals have gotten less strict over time. Also yeah, I have yet to finish Outrun myself.
You mean the 5mil points goal? That's easy
@@GrizzlyAdams94 Well, I have to do it several times (maybe 7-9 tries) whereas for Super Hang-On I only need around 3-4 tries.
Im currently playing OUT RUN on Judgment, in this game the protag got the Out Run arcade in his office. I could never finished Out Run back in the day in the arcade. I was just a kid with 4 quarters 😂
I ♥️ OutRunners
nice to hear jenovi on this video, his retro impressions series and the senna documentary he did are underrated on youtube, great to see him on one of your videos!!
Before it shut down the Trocadero had the Outrun 2 SP SDX cabs. It was fun when playing in the 2 driver mode that made you switch when you crashed or reached a checkpoint.
Best racing game ever created ! Great video ! 👍👍👍
I still play Outrun on my PSP. Great game.
I came across outrun 2 while vacationing in Jersey. Blown away.
I had an experience with Out Run in which I saw the original arcade and I asked my dad to hand me some quarters. He refused and the arcade later on became a ballerina class.
