    Lovely! We moved in the area about 2 years ago. Our garden is smaller than yours, but much bigger than regular UK gardens, and certainly an improvement since we were living in a flat before. We grow some of our food as well (but no animals), and we have a little tree nursery. If you ever need any hazel saplings for your property, do let me know. I'll probably bring a couple of bunches to the Wigtown market, at the end of November, if you're in the area. I look forward to watching more of your videos. It's so nice to find other people who want to grow food and live a peaceful life. Welcome to SW Scotland! 🤗💛🤗

    Algorithm brought me here as well. What a beautiful garden in a beautiful spot. I love the little paths, and can picture little benches and tables for afternoon or morning tea with a view. You could incorporate all sorts of indigenous plants in and around the paths to create interest and little private areas. So many options! Greetings from a very wet Vancouver, Canada ☔🙂
    (every time I come to the UK I look at the weather and go "ah, well this is familiar" 😉 )

    Moving up from any large City has its drawbacks but in time with patience and some work, I'd say you have the makings of a fine home yu can be proud of living in.

    Really loved watching your first video. What lovely scenery you have. I live on an overgrown property of 30 acres in East Texas and it's really rural. Yes we have well water here too and it can get brown because of the lignite coal in the underground lake here. We are on propane here not on gas like you guys there..What great things you are both achieving there..look forward to seeing what else you tackle and overcome.❤😊

    Definitely raise livestock, it is way easier and more rewarding than growing veg: way less job, way more food. Fruit is super easy, just like animals. Veg is the most time consuming job and in my own experience the less food per piece of ground. Raising animals will give you wonderful compost to create healthy and thick top soil.
    We live in Scotland too, our garden is less than half of yours. After many years of work we decided to grow only fruit and raise our various poultry, plus we have bees. If we would have a bigger place, we would definitely raise pigs and sheep at least. With an even bigger place we would have dairy cows, for A2 raw milk.
    Before you grow any food, it is a great idea to keep at least ducks. They will sort your slug problem that all gardeners struggle with. Apparently an average size UK garden has 5000 slugs at all times. Unless you have free range ducks. 🦆
    Enjoy your new life, it is the best possible lifestyle with amazing view.

    The algorithm brought me here. Your place is gorgeous and so peaceful. Could we have a wee cottage tour if not too intrusive.
    There seems to be thousands of people flocking/fleeing over the border since 2020. I’m wondering what’s driving this. I have my own ideas as to why.
    Looking forward to the next vlog.

    Just exactly where are you as I lived in S.W. Scotland for a few years and enjoyed it. I was on the Mackers south of Wigton. First get some round up and spray all the rubbish of so you have a clean start and don't forget to mix it with cooking oil 50 50 so it sticks too the weeds and you only use 1/2 what it says 1 lt will do it all. Get a wood burner in and save the oil money as there are several wood yards there where you can get of cuts very cheap, much cheaper than oil. You should be able to grow most things there as is mild in winter. Rasps. I suggest Autumn Bliss is late but a very good cropper and grows well there. If you build a greenhouse then you can grow citrus fruit as I did and was very successful. Yes they are a acid lover so make sure you add plenty of lime. Aglime or sugarbeet waist is very good and can be purchased locally. put plenty around your Rhodies as they won't like it. The best spuds by many miles is Vanessa. They are early but can be left to bulk and are available from a grower just outside Dunfries my best crop was 37 tons an acre and that is outstanding. Just so you know I was a pro horticulturist so I know a little bit about growing and was in Scotland for nearly 8 years.. Sell the car and get a van is more useful. If you are stuck, just ask.

    Just asking, you have 1 acre but your chickens live in a cage. Why???

    • @LifeOnTheCroft
      @LifeOnTheCroft  หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      We use an enclosed run to keep them safe from predators. There are foxes, stoats, weasels, badgers, neighbour dogs and birds of prey here who would all like a chicken dinner. We asked several neighbours before we got hens and they all said, many from experience, that if we free ranged chickens here they wouldn't survive for long.
      Our 4 hens have over 8m of space, and their run and coop are on wheels so we move them to fresh grass daily. We let them out to explore more when we can be there to keep them safe. Hope that answers your question :)

    • @LittleChena
      @LittleChena หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LifeOnTheCroft
      No, not really.
      I get the predator risk.
      My question is, why not a bigger enclosure or a protected free run?
      Your cage is not big enough for your chickens!
      Don’t have animals if you give a shit how they live, what needs they have.
      Chicken are forager, they need sand baths and space!!
      Please get educated!

    • @LifeOnTheCroft
      @LifeOnTheCroft  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      The space they are in meets the advice from the RSPCA and the British Hen Welfare Trust. I'm quite content that they're happy and healthy. As I said they also get supervised free ranging.
      It would be very difficult and expensive to build a larger stationary enclosure which protected them both overheard and from digging predators - something their current run is designed to do. With our current system they are moved to fresh grass daily so they actually enjoy much more forage than if they lived their whole lives in a stationary enclosure. They do have a sand bath, maybe you should consider that a few seconds of video isn't enough to make a fair judgement.
      I did a lot of research before getting hens and that's exactly why I decided on this chicken tractor system.
