The Bethesda Circus: Fallout 76 to The Outer Worlds of Starfield

  • Let's start over and look at the buildup to Fallout 76, the game itself, and the things that happened along the way. We'll also touch on The Outer Worlds by Obsidian briefly as we think about what to expect from Bethesda Game Studios and their publisher, Bethesda Softworks moving forward toward their next big announcement Starfield.
    We'll also touch on the Creation Club or as I call it "The Post Launch Cash Shop" and it's relationship to a game called Two Worlds 2 because I feel that's important to acknowledge and talk about as people are still calling Paid Mods to this day, when even if isn't Paid Modding, it's still something to think about as an unacceptable practice in games.
    Footage Used includes various interviews with Bethesda, Bethesda's E3 2017 and 2018 showcases, Fallout 3 content in the New Vegas program: Tale of Two Wastelands, Path of Exile, and Warframe. Background music is from Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall and Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard.
    The Tale of Two Wastelands character is the Vaultborn from the ongoing live stream series doing Operation Anchorage to get Power Armor training. The character in Path of Exile is a Double Slash Juggernaut. The Warframe used in Warframe is Gara, see my "Gara is best girl" video for details on that.

      Outer Worlds looks more like Fallout game then trash is 76, it has RPG elements, interesting game play, actual dialogue choices, I'm more hyped for Outer then play the trash that is FO76, i didn't even like FO4 i thought it was garbage to many good elements especially RPG was ripped out of it.

    Ambitious games like the Witcher 3 did not give them any motivation to improve, so why should the Outer World? Just because people have kept comparing them to Obsidian for years? Bethesda stopped listening to feedback a long time ago, they have even made fun of negative reviews and have admitted to not paying any attention.

      Todd said "I heard our games have had some bugs. *I read it on the internet, so it's true*." When you say "read it the internet so it must be true", you do so ironically. He basically was saying he doesn't take those complaints seriously.

      You're absolutely correct, Bethesda has ignored most things outside their bubble . However, this backlash of 76 is new. I doubt they've ever had this much outrage thrown at them so maybe they'll step up their game when making the new games but I'm not holding my breath.

    • @JETWTF
      @JETWTF 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@antonab1They will either step up their game and produce a game that's modern in visual and function or they will bleed more customers in the next title. Skyrim and FO4 sales... they had the ability to ignore competition. FO4 though was heavily criticized for lackluster RPG elements and FO76 is just broken from the start for the fanbase. The two combined makes for a very salty fanbase for the next title and it wont sell like Skyrim or FO4 because that reputation those games sold on is done gone thanks to FO76 and FO4.
      If Starfield is FO4 2.0 based in space Bethesda will be on the edge of closing. If Starfield is closer to Oblivion or Morrowind Bethesda may gain enough fans trust back to gain some of their dearly lost reputation.

But to me thats only half of what a RPG is all about. New Vegas fixed a lot of those issues I had with Fallout 3. It wasn't perfect but at least choices felt more meaningful.
      In the case of Skyrim. It's pretty much the same thing. It's not a bad game but it's far from being what I grew to love. It is less of an RPG with FPS elements and more of an FPS with RPG element. There is no denying TES got heavily dumbed down with Skyrim. Dosen't mean it dosent have an interesting world. Just that, FOR ME, it was lacking in ways that disapointed me. It wasn't the TES I was hoping for.

    -There is a video by this guy named Noah called "how Fallout 76 compares to older titles" and he is VERY articulated and you will like what he has to say. One thing he says is that 76 is a more honest game than 4, because it doesn't pretend to care about things that Bethesda clearly doesn't care about anymore. No more dialogue, story, player choice, etc. that Bethesda half assedly or quarter assedly implemented into Fallout 4 to begin with.

    The part about crashes increasing as you play the game longer sounds like a major red flag to me. This is a known issue for earlier Creation Engine games. Once you hit the 100-hour mark or so in a save, you'll find the game becoming increasingly unstable as it has to handle more and more information about your visits to more and more locations. You'll get seemingly random crashes which, if you look at the crash files (if you have them), usually turn out to be memory issues related to changes in cells made by the player having to be loaded in.
    In Fallout 76 they've solved part of the issue by not saving items that you've dropped, by reducing the amount and variety of loot from enemies and by reducing respawn times for enemies (which ensures the game doesn't have to save information about as many locations and whether or not you've cleared them), but at the end of the day the amount of information the game needs to process about every place you visited, every item you own, every quest you've completed et cetera should still put an increasing burden on the engine.
    If that is the case with Fallout 76, then it's not just a forgettable cash grab of a game, there's a game-breaking technical problem that more and more players will begin to run into as they put "MMO time" into the game (hundreds of hours, the amount needed to do everything, unlock everything and reach a high level). That would be the cherry on top of the shit pie that was Fallout 76's production and release: the game self-destructing after a few hundred hours of play.

      @capsloco 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ Vulpes Inculta It would be a sad thing, these things are hard to fix. Donkey Kong 64 was shipped with a bad memory leak, since Rare couldn't manage to fix it. That's why you needed the Expansion pak to play, the extra memory gave the game more time till it would crap itself.
      The PC Port of Deadly Premonition also came with a memory leak that was never fixed by the developers. Fans used a similiar Method to the DK 64 one to fix it. Deadly Premonition was an x32 executable, and by modifying it to be a x64 executable you would give the game more ram to dump into...well at least if you run a system with more than 4gigs of memory.
      Since the game already runs as an x64 executable (well, at least I hope so since Fallout 4/Skyrim Special Edition also were) it is kinda scary how fast/often it seems to crap itsself.

Fallout was by far my favorite game series of all time. Back then the game gave you just enough visuals to get your mind working which filled in the gaps and it helped create this massive world that you really believed existed after a global nuclear war, we all lived in fear of that shit as it could really happen at any time in real life. I did not play fallout to play with my friends, or in multiplayer I played it for the 1 PERSON STORY LINE!! Someone punch Todd in the balls, WTF are you thinking TODD? This hot mess of a game runs like my ex-wife, HOT AND COLD, on-again off again and clamps up and shuts down all the time. I'll even go 1 step further and ask when it became acceptable to allow games to be released with a shit-ton of bugs and poor game play? It's the trend now, I want to puke at the state of the gaming industry as a whole. Someone needs a ass-whoopin! It is unacceptable and it's not going to get any better until we demand it. Piss poor games at release and then choked full of P2W crap, all part of the money grab. Yet we keep buying this shit. How many games in recent years were so buggy and soo bad that you could not play it as intended at launch? How many? 5-6? How many No man's Sky, Xrebirth, Fallout76, games have been released? If we ever got our collective shit together and just stopped buying their shitty games I bet we would get their attention rear friggin fast. But i forgot this is the everyone gets a failure trophy generation....to bad we will never get organized!! Story: nothing new in storytelling either (their previous games such as kotor 2 had better story)
      Sounds and music: cheap and boring
      Atmosphere: similar pattern as other obsidian/black isle/troika projects (but feels cheaper cuz of other aspects of this game and the fact it was released in 2015)
      And now they announce their entire "new" and "inovating" rpg with location based world (simillar to kotor 2 which was released 13 fucking years ago) with endless loading screens, without mods (games like kotor 2, vtmb, fnv were literally saved and preserved by moding community), and they dare to advertise it as a "spiritual successor" to fnv (which was mostly made using bethesda resources and polished by community). So jow they have a multimillion dollar project and purchased a entire brand new studio for said project,likely with several teams all for a now illegal game.
    What do you do? Well il tell you what you do, you tell the team to make the game as playable as possible by the time E3 that year rolls around and you dump it and quickly move your team to a profitable game and you pretend you were never about to do a god awful thing, you pretend this game whos every possible aspect from perks to schematics was clearly meant to be montized was pulled last minute was always intended to be scum free!
    Why did this happen? Fallout shelter,they saw that low effort insane payout and their greed took right over, its likely that Belgium saved us more than we ever thought. Im writing a huge paper detailing exactly why i believe this and am posting it to reddit later, i started writing it 2 days ago and pretty much everything i detailed was confirmed from yesterdays code reveal. I just wished i haddent been so lazy or its probably be top post next to the code reveal one.
    See never procrastinate kids, greatness awaits those who seize it!
    Also i think the reason that elder scrolls blades is being made and is now delayed likely has to do with them making this entire game for china,bethesda(or rather zenimax) is not stupid, they know their market, they only seem stupid to the untrained eye,which is exactly what they want ppl to think,they know that elderscrolls blades is offensive to americans, but it will likely make zenimax more money then any games ever has for them,simply because of china. Remember china just banned several games, they were probably tipped off early by an insider and have been struggling to make the game pass all their guidlines(hint: this will destroy alot of beloved canon)
    Bethesda acquired battlecry in early march, the very next month,in april exploiting small children using age old gambling techniques thinly veiled as a "videogame" was made illegal in Belgium,shortly after many more countrys followed them along with some american states.
    6 months later they spit out fo76
    Coincidence? I think not,this game is 12 months old at the very very most.

      I'd say human short-sightedness over capitalism. Nothing in capitalism argues against fair trade (acceptable price for valued work/product), it's only when the money in hand blinds a company to the road ahead that they walk off cliffs. That is in no way a problem isolated to the economic system, it just manifests differently.
      Edit: To clarify, it's actually even more than company short-sightedness. It's consumer short-sightedness. Company blindness can be slapped out of them, but it requires vigilance on the part of the consumer, the same way democracy/republicanism demands the vigilance of its voters. When the public fails to slap problems then they persist and it becomes harder to correct them until something catastrophic happens. Like every problem, it has its own inertia.

      @Zach cash from slave labor to sharecrop labor to child labor to sweatshop labor to prison labor I think there's a case to be made that the idea of worker's rights under capitalism is one of those "works on paper, fails in practice" deals.

    • @ConsciousnessisRough

      Capitalism isn't a form of government, it's an economic system. The form of government capitalism ultimately produces is fascism. Because a democracy can't exist with extreme inequality.

    • @Malisteen
      @Malisteen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Zach cash prison labor depresses wages for all workers, because jobs that would otherwise have to pay actual wages are paying pennies instead. And it doesnt matter where sweat shops are, it matters who's profiting from them, which goes back to big corporations based in capitalist countries, and again results in depressed wages and workers with fewer optiins and rights. The greatest advancements in worker rights and quality of life in capitalist countries can be laid not at the feet of fair exchange and competition under the free market, but rather at the collectivist efgorts of unions and interventionist regulations that unions lobbied for. As unions have lost power and reduced transportation costs have allowed corporations to skip workplace regulations by shifting production into unregulated jurisdictions, resulting in a situation practically closer to unrehulated pure market capitalism, so have worker rights and quality of life gains in "first world" countries have backslid.
      I'm not here advocating for soviet style communism, but rather democratic socialism, leveraging the strength of capitalist markets but acknowledging the reality that, free of regulation, intervention, safety net programs, and wealth redistribution policies, the tendency of corporate capitalism is to concentrate wealth and power into ever fewer hands, leading to monopolistic effects that completely destroy capitalisms ability to innovate new products or reduce the price on existing ones, as well as massive externality costs that more than negate capitalisms promise of efficiency and overall social improvement.

    I think, aside from PR and redoing their marketing, all Bethesda needs to do is this:
    Hire and organize a dedicated software engineering team whose ENTIRE PURPOSE is the game engine, agnostic of any game projects. Their job is fixing, updating, designing, and releasing the game engine, even if said release is only in-house and, thus, not really facing any sort of serious release deadlines for the engine.
    Then Bethesda could have actual game development teams centered on various projects who, when they start, fork the engine's latest stable branch and develop on that. Any modifications they make can then be submitted as patches to the software engineering team, who arbitrates and decides if those patches have any changes worth adding to the core engine itself. These project teams should never update the engine to newer stable releases, sticking only with the state of the art for the time the project started. YES, that means the engine potentially might be dated by the time of release, but by doing so they're ensuring their modifications to the engine are not going to be reliant on old code or dependencies that might have been updated or removed by the engineering team.
    This upstream-downstream approach is essentially how a lot of large open source projects actually work, and makes sure that the "canon" version of the codebase stays stable and isn't subject to ambitious timelines or Todd Howard's idiotic whims.
    Of course this would actually require Bethesda's senior management to be willing to spend more money on something that actually matters, so it just won't happen.

Which then allowed him to increase his developer staff who instead would be (silently) working primarily on Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield - his real targets. Lying is so ingrained with them I doubt they'll ever stop. I don't agree with you about the engine thing. I know there's so much more to it that even calling it an engine is misguided. There comes a time when it's easier to replace than rebuild and that time has come, and is needed. All of this really doesn't matter though, unless the corporate jerks remove their heads from each others asses, all games to come will be a kin to 76.

    Bethesda's games have always become more buggy and crash-prone the longer you play them. With each new location you discover/clear, with each quest done, with each container looted, and each item stored, you move clouser to exceeding the limit of save data the game can actually handle, and that's when things go tits up.
    I don't know if this is a hard limitation of the game engine, or if it's just yet another example of Bethesda's incompetence working with it, but this has been a fatal flaw with all their releases. The game can work mostly alright when you start out, with perhabs just the odd unexplained CTD happening every once in a while, but the longer you play the less it works, the fewer houers you can play before an inevitable CTD, untill finally you'll be lucky to get even a single houer of playtime in there before you are suddenly left staring at your desktop.
    This has been my experiance with all their games, spanning 4 different PC's with drastically different hardware, 3 different OS'es, and one console version of their games aswell (someone gifted me Fo3 for the PS3, and i had worse crash problems with that than i did the PC version).

You name it and i've tried it or have it installed), and all of them start out stable, but after playing a char for a while and getting up a bit in the levels, they all start crashing again.
      And no, i'm not running hundreds of mods on them either, no HiDef texture packs or other mem-hogs, i gave up on trying to mod the hell out of these games ages ago, and just go with a few important things i can't live without (and which does not involve always running scripts, so no frostfall or any of that) for maximum stability.
      The fixes help, i'm not arguing that they don't, the games all run noticably more stable with them than without them, but mods can only do so much. Modders cannot fix the broken engine, only Bethesda has engine-level access.

    Luke Stephens had a theory about why Fallout 76 even exists, and it goes something like: Recognizing that they need to rebuild their engine from the ground up with technical expertise they currently don't have, 76 was a concession to the suits who own them, who otherwise don't understand why BGS needs the extra budget when their games so far have all sold well. 76 was a rushed games-as-service to create a stream of continuous revenue in order to pay for the extra hands BSG needs to build the engine from the ground up, and not just make their next game on the husk of their last. His vid is here if you're curious: th-cam.com/video/GlTq2-q3CYk/w-d-xo.html
    It would coincide with them at least being aware of the criticism they get, and knowing how they're being edged out by competitors, and how they'll never win another GOTY with their current path.

    • @bdhale34
      @bdhale34 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an interesting theory, it goes against what Todd Howard and others at Bethesda have said but it's interesting. Bethesda has no interest in even using a competent version of the engine they are already using, they love their cobbled together buggy mess and they will be using it for the foreseeable future in Starfield and in TES6 they already announced both will be using Creation AKA NetImmerse v. -3.0 (the negative is on purpose because everything Bethesda did to the engine has been a downgrade).

    • @JayRNaylor
      @JayRNaylor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bdhale34 I don't think it's that simple. I think they want to maintain the good parts of their world (every item is an actual item, every building can be entered, every character can be pickpocketed etc) but the Creation Engine could be torn down and rebuilt in a way that runs in a more efficient and stable manner. I have a feeling that's what they're talking about. Not that TES 6 is going to look and feel exactly like Skyrim.

    • @bdhale34
      @bdhale34 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JayRNaylor Tearing down and modifying NetImmerse is what got us Creation engine. The original Engine is built for MMOs it's very powerful and scales quite well, Bethesda seems to be the only dev house with this many issues making large world games using it. What they literally said was they like their tool set (the one they have been using since TES3: Morrowind circa 1998) meaning they like the map editor script editor and scripting/mod support they shoehorned into the original engine, and oddly enough a lot of the bugs are the fault of that tool set. If memory serves TES: Online is an excellent example of a game published by Bethesda developed by someone competent using the NetImmerse engine, you'll find almost none of the classic Bethesda bugs in that release and you can surely draw the conclusion as to why that is, it's using the same engine they use for everything only not the version modified by them. Some examples of why they will use this hacked mess until they go bankrupt is some of the absolutely insanely large and complicated mods a single or very small group of part time script and mod authors have made for some of their games using the tool set. They will take easy over good every single time and you can be certain they will keep using this mess they made until people stop buying the trash it produces..
