As a long time fan of 44 Mag, 357 Mag, 45 ACP, I finally got a 40 cal and was startled at the performance. Then I got a 357 SIG and was startled all over again. I still love my old favorites, but I will only carry the 40 or 357 SIG from now on. Tools is the gold standard of ammo testing!
When the 357 Sig is tested against the other service calibers it always has the best performance. That said it's still fun to watch these tests even knowing what the outcome will be.
Surprising to see. Previous Golden Sabre performance was disappointing at best. Their other LE ammunition in 40 S&W was junk. Our department used it for two purchase cycles, and seeing actual real world performance on two legged animals, the results were horrible. Many never expanded. Nice to see that these bonded rounds are performing as they should through heavy clothing.
I don’t have a dedicated 357 Sigg handgun but I did what you did and bought a replacement barrel for my Glock 22. I went out and bought a set of dies and 300 cases and loaded them all up, one of those ‘just in case’ kind of deals.
About 15 years ago, I got divorced and had to sell all my guns… I kept my 357 Sig 😅. Still have it, it is my favorite although I now have a lot more since remarrying.
Kinda sad, looks like Sig even stopped making new pistols in .357 Sigs and .40 S&W. I just picked up a police trade in P226 in .40 for like half the price of a new one.
Like many of you, I am a .357 Sig fan. It just doesn't disappoint. My P226 & P229 both are .357 Sig with spare .40 barrels. My CZ 75B in .40 will soon be sporting a .357 Sig barrel. Tools, excellent presentation as always! Sometimes these tests surprise us all. The .40 did a great job despite the poor (In my humble opinion) velocity test.
@@YacolJ I still don't understand how .40 fell out of favor. It pretty much always outperforms 9mm and .45acp as far as numbers go. I know that the ammo is going to get expensive and harder to find, but my next handgun is going to be .40. People are dumping them. You can get the guns (used), pretty cheap nowadays. My dad still carries a .40. I saw a data sheet where the only one shot stop from a handgun one year (other than. 357mag) was from a .40. This was a law enforcement compilation that was made after a lot of departments had gone back to 9mm.
@letsdothis9063 So, a few things. Everything that you said is true. 357 magnum is also up there in 1 shot stops. Also, you can find new old stock, which is brand new, older versions of guns. I bought a 1st gen Smith and Wesson Shield in 40S&W for $350 brand new last year. I didn't want 9mm or double stack, so I opted for an older gen.
Great job as always. Thanks for the bonded .357 sig test early in this new year. .357sig is the winner but surprisingly the slower .40 is by no means a slouch looks like it actually expanded more…👍
Two of my favorite rounds, I use both of these. Stellar performance as expected. People like to ignore Remington defensive ammo, but it’s good stuff. I like it, especially the bonded rounds.
I thought the .40 was gonna fall short in the expansion department with those velocities but that was great performance. If I had to pick a winner I’d have to go with the .357. I like the extra penetration. But both would do what needs done fore sure. Excellent test as always good sir 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Excellent first test of the year! It would be hard to choose which one as they both did great! I really like that you added the slo-mo of the jelly impacts! 👍
Love my 357 sig. I remember when I got divorced and sold all my pew pews, I kept my 357 sig. NEVER gonna sell that one. Now of course I got more new ones since a got remarried. You can never have too many pew pews, and you can never have enough ammo 😂
Absolutely love seeing 357 sig! Amazing round! One of the absolute best overall! Would love to see it go up against all the main calibers with the same loadings!
Man I picked up a Springfield Armory XDM with a 4.5 inch barrel in 10mm and here shortly I'm trying to find a 357 Sig or I might get just the barrel for my M&P 40 2.0
I settled on 40 as my edc, with the bonus of sharing common bullets for handloading my 10mm. Now that I found that KKM makes 357Sig barrels for M&Ps I may give it a try too.
Better than expected performance. I am a bit confused. I would have expected the increased velocity of the 357 Sig to expand the projectile more radically which would decrease penetration. BUT, the opposite actually happened. I have been looking at getting a G23 and then following up with a 357 Sig bbl and shoot both the 40 and the 357 Sig. This test helps.
Remington curled jacket inward at the tip of hollow point for feed ramp reliability, I have some htp 155 grain 40 cal rounds that have that to where as my 155 grain Winchester silver tips don't have inward curling in at tip of hollow point
Glad to see your video. 👍👍 Especially happy to see the performance with .40 since that GS Bonded .40 loading was all I could reliably get for a couple of years and is what's currently in my usual carry pistol.
And the winner is? By unanimous decision 😅 Mr. TOOLS! He is the Gold standard, testing Golden sabre or any ammunition available. Youre the best bro. RIP Paul Harrel.
And this is exactly why my bedside gun is a P2000 V2 in 357 sig, except I run Federal HST. To this day I don't understand why more people don't use the 357 sig. Ballistics wise, it's right at the top for pistol calibers in energy and "stopping power", without over penetration.
Another great test - thank you? I was just thinking (dangerous, I know). You've been checking rounds for consistency for rounds from the same box. It woukld be really interesting to see how consistent rounds from different lots, loaded at different times, compare and how good the ammo manufacturers control QC.
.40sw with 1097fps is still within the +/- 5% threshold for ammo specs. .357sig 1380 fps is 102.3% higher than advertised...still within the +/- 5% threshold.
I used to carry a SP2340 loaded with Golden Saber in 357sig in the late 90's. I still have that gun plus I added a few more 357sig guns to my collection, including a P229, H&K VP40 with a 357sig barrel, S&W M&P 40L with a 357sig barrel and I have 2 SP2022 in 357sig. I have 6 boxes of Golden Saber in 357sig but I mainly run HST due to accessibility. I would love to find some Golden Saber in 40s&w also. Those are my two favorite calibers.
Cool test. I bought a ton of LEO trade in 185gr +P 45acp Golden Saber a long time ago. I'm not sure how it did or would in gel, but it shot excellent out of my HK carbine out to 200 yards without any effort. Good to see it might not have been a bad idea to buy if they perform even close to this out of a hand gun or the carbine.
I can't imagine that the power differences between those two rounds would make for a noticeable difference in effectiveness in 99% of civilian real world encounters, compared to placement, trigger control, or precision.
I considered getting a .357 Sig back in the day because I'm a huge .357 mag fan but I was pretty sure it wasn't going to stick around. I do wish it was more popular because it's an excellent caliber and deserves a place at the main table. That said, I'm a .40 S&W fan so even with the lackluster speeds, it still did perform very well. Loaded to true .40 S&W levels and it's a truly formidable cartridge.
Jim sportin the winter collection range ware, notice how he rocks this years headware and the matching shooting glasses. Notice how the sunlit background seems to give Jim an angelic aura glow hilights as he effertlessly sends rounds down range and into the gel blocks. Yes Jim rocks the shooting fashion world, happy new year and looking foward to many more great video's and the up coming spring fashions.
I'm trying to get a non-Glock .357 Sig and really like the .40 SW. I have to say that I agree with you that the .357 Sig won here, but it was quite close. I'd say you had a winner and a runner-up and no loser.
I don’t mind these bonded sabers 🫡🇺🇸 I have the 185s in my TISAS 1911A1 right now. I’m happy with them. Remington ammo in a GI 1911 just seems right to me! Would love to see some grizzly 180 10mm tested
Nice test. Virginia State Police Started using .357 sig years ago to replace the 9mm according to a friend that is a Trooper. Apparently due to the lack of penetration from the 9mm. Good video as usual Tools.😎👊🏻
I had a glock 31 loved the round, it was a great shooter but the ammo was just too expensive in my area 50 rounds was over $40 a box so I went back to a 9mm tool. I do recommend a .357 sig if you can afford ammo.
As popular as 9mm is right now, I personally believe that .40S&W and .357sig with have a resurgence in the future. The 10mm was considered "dead" for quite a while, and look how popular it is today. It'll take a while, but still a good chance it will happen.
Great test, Brian! I definitely like a bonded bullet with anything that has enough velocity to start pulling a bullet apart! I'm not sure the .40 is quite in that league but the Sig definitely is! I should have gotten into the Sig years ago but since I didn't, I'm pretty much up to my neck in 9mm now plus I'm just too old to switch now! Oh well, live and learn.. Cheers, jc
I'm honestly not a big fan of the fluted stuff unless it's one of what I call "problem calibers", where they're needed because it's so hard to get reliable expansion from a standard lead HP projectile. There's no need to get fancy with .357 Sig. Id rather have a heavy chunk of lead.
Remmy has definitely upped their game with those boolits! I'm impressed...and after the last ten years of Remmy drama, that's saying a lot as far as I'm concerned. I may take them off of my "banned ammo" list.
Impressive, but the performance of the .357 sig still under-performed the 9mm Federal Punch as far as penetration and expansion, which, as far as pistol rounds are the most important aspects.
That .357 Sig is a mean round. I run the Golden Sabre in the .40. Not this bonded stuff. Older stuff. Haven't shot anyone with it but find the accuracy to be good at the range. Thanks for the test.
As you know, I would go with the 40S&W because it is easier to find and cheaper and the performance is the same as the 357. Great test, keep the 40's coming!
40 is easier to find and cheaper...but you are in denial and kidding yourself if you say the performance is the same...357sig has about 100 more ft/lbs of energy or more on the average loads ...this is not the "same"
357Sig is still the most optimal self defense round even when using reduced velocity 357Sig like this round. Great test! I EDC a P229 with Underwood 125gr Gold Dot 357Sig but as an alternative when these last Underwood Gold Dots get fired off I'll either use Double Tap 125gr 357Sig or Underwood 124gr XTP 357Sig. I refuse to buy reduced velocity 357Sig at the prices they are asking.
To be honest coming from Remington I had some doubts on fps & performance. Both did great! Only reason I might choose the 40 S&W is availability locally & expanded width - bigger hole. Very nice. Stay safe on the roads. ❄️👍🙏
@ToolsandTargets Whitetop Mtn. Va. had 5in by 5pm. Wise had icy roads especially I-26. Freezing rain before daylight Sunday will be a nightmare. Next weekend could be rough also.
I'm old and poor. 22s are the only thing I can afford to shoot much. I've watched every videos you've made comparing Heritage Rough Riders. You've tested Barkeep to Rancher, but you haven't tested the 9" or 12" barrels. Going from 6 1/2" to 16" is a big jump. I'm very interested in knowing if those lengths are faster than the others. Order yourself 1 of each and fill out your collection. 👍👍
Nice performance by both and Both of these look like they can handle a lot more fpe like maximum charge considering how much base they have left, The 357 has almost all of its base yet to give.
Great performance all things considered. Sure we always want more speed but I can't argue with these results. I would absolutely carry both of these without hesitation in my 40 and my 357 Sig. Huge thanks.
That. 40 did WAY better than expected.
The .357 Sig velocities made me expect that performance, but the .40 at those numbers expanded nicely.
😎👊
Man the golden sabre stuff reminds me of Paul Harrel. What a guy 😔
😎👊
Wasn't a fan of hyper ammo
@FoulPet true ! I thunk he liked the liberty civil defense though. Makes me sad just talking about it .
What a legend...RIP Paul..
He was critical of the golden saber. But his carry ammo was green and white box 115gr.
Remington deserves an "atta boy" on these two loads. 🙂
Good ones.😎👍
i really wish .357 sig would make a come back the way 10mm has. it's such a great round.
Perfect performance! .357 is the winner for sure but not mad at the 40! Both better than 9mm.
As a long time fan of 44 Mag, 357 Mag, 45 ACP, I finally got a 40 cal and was startled at the performance. Then I got a 357 SIG and was startled all over again. I still love my old favorites, but I will only carry the 40 or 357 SIG from now on.

With 90 more ft. lbs. of energy, more velocity and 3 inches more penetration the winner is the 357 Sig! 😍
When the 357 Sig is tested against the other service calibers it always has the best performance. That said it's still fun to watch these tests even knowing what the outcome will be.
165 is the perfect weight for the .40 S&W. Impressive performance
Agreed

@ was that the 180 version?
It’s almost the perfect weight. The 135gr Corbon is about the best .40 I’ve ever tested. 1325fps
Thx for still testing these two calibers!❤

357sig. My absolute favorite round. Taken black bear and blacktail deer w it. Also my carry round w Underwood ammo

About 15 years ago, I got divorced and had to sell all my guns… I kept my 357 Sig 😅. Still have it, it is my favorite although I now have a lot more since remarrying.
Glad they're still making 357Sig that's great. Really my fav round, such a shame there's not many Micro-357's.. YET
😎👊
Shield 40 with a .357 Sig conversion barrel.
Not anyone other than Block making 357s. Not sure they even make the gen 5 in it either.
@FoulPet No gen 5. I love my gen 3 g32, would certainly upgrade sometime if it was an option.

.357sig is a insane round. If I could only have 1 handgun round for everything. 10mm would be it. But damnit if .357sig doesn't preform incredible
Have you ever considered the 68 grain Xtreme defender in 357 Sig it's like 2100 ft a second

Got these 40 s&w bonded in 180 grain not long ago. I wish they would offer the bonded version in 357 magnum and 45 colt though.
Impressive, but the performance of the .357 sig still under-performed the 9mm Federal Punch as far as penetration and expansion, which, as far as pistol rounds are the most important aspects.
Can't complain with either one of those rounds, great ammo test, thanks brother
Thank you sir.😎👊
That .357 Sig is a mean round. I run the Golden Sabre in the .40. Not this bonded stuff. Older stuff. Haven't shot anyone with it but find the accuracy to be good at the range.
Thanks for the test.
I was surprised this .40 did so well.😎👊
I will never know why the 357 SIG is not more popular than 9 mm.
I'd like to see more PCCs made in 357 SIG. They'd give near rifle like velocities and energy.
NATO
I actually seen a cop in uniform at the pawn shop buying a box of these
👮♂️
What caliber???
@kevinrichardson8859 You're not going to believe me when I tell you smh380 I think you said it was back up
As you know, I would go with the 40S&W because it is easier to find and cheaper and the performance is the same as the 357. Great test, keep the 40's coming!
40 is easier to find and cheaper...but you are in denial and kidding yourself if you say the performance is the same...357sig has about 100 more ft/lbs of energy or more on the average loads ...this is not the "same"
.357 SIG is nasty as hell, and that tapered case is great for feeding. Funny how it's not so popular...
Numbers are numbers but that big chunk of lead speaks for itself
😎👊
357Sig is still the most optimal self defense round even when using reduced velocity 357Sig like this round. Great test! I EDC a P229 with Underwood 125gr Gold Dot 357Sig but as an alternative when these last Underwood Gold Dots get fired off I'll either use Double Tap 125gr 357Sig or Underwood 124gr XTP 357Sig. I refuse to buy reduced velocity 357Sig at the prices they are asking.
Nice presentation, and disappointed in the 40's lack of speed...
Thank you sir. Same.
Love the 40 s&w in 180 grain
To be honest coming from Remington I had some doubts on fps & performance. Both did great! Only reason I might choose the 40 S&W is availability locally & expanded width - bigger hole. Very nice. Stay safe on the roads. ❄️👍🙏
Hopefully we wont see too much here.🥶
@ToolsandTargets Whitetop Mtn. Va. had 5in by 5pm.
Another outstanding video Tools. And if I remember correctly the Golden Sabre didn't perform this well in your previous test.
Quality loads. It would be interesting to see how they perform through a 3.5" barrel. Future video?
Nice test. Love the 357 Sig! 👍
I was looking at that in 40 today. It performed well. I'd be running it out of a 3.1 inch. A little weak on energy for me.
Nice performance by both and Both of these look like they can handle a lot more fpe like maximum charge considering how much base they have left,
The 357 has almost all of its base yet to give.
😎👊
Great performance all things considered. Sure we always want more speed but I can't argue with these results. I would absolutely carry both of these without hesitation in my 40 and my 357 Sig. Huge thanks.
I was surprised by this one.
Pretty good 40 S&W load 🤔 I might have to get some for my 40.
2 great calibers! Thanks for a great video.
😎👊
