Re price - my Gocycle GS “paid for itself” within a year (vs public transport) so everytime I use it now it’s pure “profit”. And I use it far more than I ever did my “normal” bike because I can use it in normal clothes, don’t get sweaty, and it’s just so comfortable and fun. You do have to be mindful of the location of the motor, and it can attract attention so be careful where you leave it. If they could up the assistance level to 17 mph it would be perfect...
UK law is to protect motorists not cyclists . 15mph is slow as hell and actually puts you in a vulnerable position as you can accelerate out of a problem unlike a road cyclist . Keeping Ebikes slow makes them less desirable making people decide to get a car which then adds to our ever increasing congestion .Bear in mind road cyclists go well over 20mph and go downhill at 40+mph (I know because I used to do this on a road bike) on tiny tyres and rim brakes - how safe is that . Just got a Gocycle GX last month. Heartily agree with all your observations. It would be lovely if it had at least one more gear. I find myself maxing out on speed pretty easily and have reverted to my road bike for a couple of lockdown jaunts. However, overall, I’m much more likely to go out exploring on my bike with the Gocycle. Look forward to doing the commute on it, whenever the commute returns.
We’ve had a Gocycle GX for a year now and used it every day instead of the car for going to the train. We fold it and roll it holding the sadle like you showed us on to the train. Then riding it from the train to work (before this virus appeared). It’s also great that it’s small enough to be folded, rolled, charged, right next to tour desk. In short, we love it. I also took it out in the trunk of my car to the countryside and rode it on gravel roads and it copes with light gravel brilliantly and forest paths very well thanks to the wide tires and suspension built into the frame. We also fixed a child seat from Thule to the sadle and the kids love riding on it. Regular bikes are not allowed on trains in my country (Sweden) only folding ones. We also tried a electric skateboard and electric folding scooter, but they are not as comfortable or good in winter and frankly, look a bit silly.

Good stuff. Nice to see a 'normal petrol-head's bike review'. There are a _lot_ of people out there that like the convenience and reliability of cycling, but don't actually like the pedalling very much, hence the popularity of e-bikes - even in the Netherlands, home of cyclists - they are about to pass 50% of sales being e there. Hopefully this review will get a few more converts, and one day we might even get a decent amount of segregated roadspace so people can get where they are going without fear of being flattened or hassled.
The delay of shifting is caused by the torque of the motor being applied. That hub was not developed for electric bicycles. If you stop pedaling just for a short moment therefore no torque being applied it will shift straight away.
Spot on Mat. I bought one & took delivery today. When I was showed it in the shop I spotted that flimsy thingie you mention at 14:20 & guess what? It snapped off the very first time I withdrew the seat post from the tube! I agree about the mudguards & lights. I think a phone charging point would be so useful. My phone battery died on my first test drive using maps. Finally, having had my Brompton stolen on Monday this generally gorgeous bit of future classic British design has cheered me up a lot! I am never going to let it out of my sight!
Actually I've owned and used e-bikes for many years and inevitably watched loads of videos on the subject. However, yours happen to be one of the best. It's definitely the best British made one even though not everything you say is strictly speaking correct but I don't care. Well done and I very much hope you make many more of this kind of videos.
Raising the speed limit assistance to 20 MPH would be about the only good thing to come out of leaving, that’s even if they decided to change it. 20 is much safer in stop/start city traffic than 15, as often, other vehicles will overtake you at 15 but be willing to stay behind at 20, until the next stop/start.
@@markparker5585 I wish the EU would change that across the entire EU tbh. The Americans aren't usually correct but on this occasion they are I used to travel to work 18 miles away by train. Door to door, that's 1 hour. Walking, waiting, train, walking. The actual train journey was just 30 minutes but they were delayed and public transport is awful. You're also constantly waiting around At 20Mph,I could have got to that work place in... an hour (in theory) It would mean I wouldn't even need public transport
@@stevenhammond4121 Actually the Government has said no extension will be given. And yes we are out of the EU. The transition period just means we follow their regulations and laws until the end of the year while we discuss future trade agreements. If nothing is agreed to by the end of the year. We shift from using the EU's regulations to WTO regulations. IF we do get a deal, regulations and trade will be based on that.
Which leaves open whether I could buy one in the USA with greater power and use it here. And BTW there's a TH-cam video complaining that the OEM tyres are crap, that they constantly puncture, and that whereas GoCycle used to offer Schwabe Big Ben tyres as an option they stopped that.
You do great product reviews of the negatives and positives to be expected. I have had my Gocycle G3 for one year already, and I can attest to the great build quality. Despite its high price, I believe this E-bike to be a great investment. The fenders are a must and the lights will help too. I take weekend drives at the trail, 5 miles each way on smooth concrete surface and dirt road with small rocks, easily without any major problems so far. I cycle to work, 0.5 miles each way. In total, I have cycled 345 miles on this E-bike, and I have never had to fold it. I would not try again even if you paid me to do so since I really think its a bit of a hassle having to separate the tires and handle 37lbs. The new style seems much easier to fold. I am able to ride for 37 miles on one battery charge using the Eco mode, which is the best for an exact 50% split between electric and human power and achieving the 37 miles on one charge. This drains the battery to 30%, and it takes exactly 5 hours and 30 minutes to recharge from this level with the fast charger. The only minor problem I have had was a broken, 1 out of three, wheel securing lever that cracked due to over overtightening the adjustment screw. The instructions for the levers are not very good. The other minor issue was a squeaking rear wheel when riding. This was solved by readjusting the three wheel securing levers. Finally, I added my own 12 Volt external power source made up of 6 18650 batteries to power a Supernova M99 Mini-Pro 45 front light and a rear Supernova M99 tail-light 45. These lights are turned on with a remote control connected to the external power supply. Now, this E-bike has enhanced looks and visibility at about an extra $600.
Excellent review, Mat. I have both electric and normal bikes. Very happy with both! Tip for you, Mat! Put your heel on the pedal and stretch your leg completely with your hip parallel to the ground. This is your seat height! You will then get much more power to the pedals from your legs.
Awesome showcase of the benefits of e-bikes - I’ve had a Gocycle GS for a few years now - they quickly pay for themselves for urban commuters. Circa 4p charge = 40 miles - I’ve seen big savings vs my monthly travelcard in London - and I feel healthier - much more fun than the tube too!
Hi Matt, came across from car wow. Reviews are really good seem to be more personal as well. The e bike looks great and as always you give a very balanced review. With the brakes, the front may have more play to make certain you do not go over the front, it may be designed to ensure they come in slower than the back? Thanks as always and glad to see your channel already has 200k keep up the good work
Typically with hydraulic disk brakes there will be a reach adjust bolt. This will allow the rider to move the levers closer or further away from the bars depending on preference. My guess is that they didn't adjust them quite right from the factory.
In case matt is reading, it's typically found on the pivot between the brake lever and the piston. You can wind it in or out and that changes the position of the lever. But obviously, check the manual for your specific make and model of brakes before you fiddle with them.
Best review I've seen of a Gocycle Matt! I've owned a G3 since December 2017 and it has not missed a beat in over 1800 miles since then. I used to commute on it into central London before I retired, since when I cycle daily for exercise. I'm 65 so a bit of help up the hills is appreciated. The brakes are hydraulic so should rarely need adjustment (I've never had to)and should maintain a short travel on the lever, so I would get that looked at by a Gocycle specialist. These aren't cheap, but they are quality and go on forever. 👍
I agree this is a great quality expensive e-bike. I know because I have a G3 since 2019, and it is still like new after 380 miles. Most of the negative comments come from people who do not or cannot own one, so do not listen to them. I have my own somewhat lengthy review here too.
@@jonathanantoun1367 I previously owned a budget e bike. The battery failed after 12 months, the brakes were constantly going out of adjustment and the bottom bracket went after 700 miles. I figured that in the long run, the GoCycle would break even given the quality of the build and that has proved right. I'm still on the original battery and range is pretty much what it was back in 2017. The bike is still as new despite the mileage.
Dear Mat, I bought one because I saw this review. A year on and two defects later I regret doing it. 4200 euros down the drain. It is a good bike to keep in your closet but if you use it a lot, as I did, it goes wrong. It is not maintenance free. Every time it defect electrically, the repairs take ages because everything is placed in the frame. Your car reviews are brilliant though.
E-biker (and car guy) from USA here 😄. Great review! Gotta admit to loving the stateside 500W, the 20mph kick and my Seattle-area scenery. Viewpoint: The majority of motorcyclists in the states are just looking for some wind-in-the-hair weekend fun on back roads (not commuting). An e-bike would provide 90% of their needs, allow them to enjoy the passing scenery better, allow them on trails, allow them to carry bike over obstacles (logs, fences) no need for insurance or registration, ability to load into a hatchback or hitch rack and store indoors. I'm convinced many motorcyclists in the US are either unaware of ebikes, or else they simply (opinion😊) see their ponderous V-twin as a 2-wheeled social signalling device (much like tattoos and nose rings on a milquetoast bank teller)
Which would be the only true test of its claimed range - and no big deal really. At age 68, I regularly ride my non-electric Brompton 30+ miles; only reason I haven't been going further has been the issue with finding 'pit-stops' for coffee and cake LOL.
Chain is not maintenance free. Must be lubed and replaced (maybe once or twice a year if used everyday). Not good to have that cover because you can not easily inspect chain.
@@lmaoroflcopter Yes could be shaft or belt driven. Can't find info om website. If it's not chain, yes, near maintenance free. If belt driven they would advertise it on website!? Edit: found a review on website, it's chain.
To be fair, usually you can always adjust the brakes on bikes. Just where the cable attach to the break handle, there should be two pieces around the cable, they're really tiny. You can twist those things to adjust brake intensity and travel
I think £3K is a lot for a bike that doesn't even come with lights as standard. Plus for that price you can get some pretty decent full size E bikes, yes they wouldn't fold but they'd be more comfortable and have larger capacity batteries. That being said seems like quite a good bike 😁
The most affordable electric bike I ever owned was a cute little three speed called a Plugie. It was only $250. It came with a long extension cord as you had to plug it in. One time, I went 200 yards from my home and I got yanked off my bike because my extension cord was only 200 yards in length. I now keep my rides short (199 yards or less.)
IT depends on what you call a real " brake". One of my bikes fails after 18 years of my intensive using and about 30k km . Broken rear fork. Unbalanced brake levers or mistuned gear changer is not a brake but lack of maintenance. Broken plastic element meant for me its bad engeneering.
5:33 I really like these points, it's the same reason why I got an ebike. I've done sports all my life, I was semi professional in tennis, so believe me when I say I don't need the assistance. It's just preferred. A lot of people think that ebikes should primarily be ridden by old people who need the assistance, but I say I don't want to turn up to class/my friends house all sweaty and panting. Now exercise is a matter of what you wear. The more you pedal, the warmer you will be :) It's a win from any perspective.
Matt, after watching this I looked into the GXi! Insanely expensive, but the man maths kicked in & I squeezed the trigger on it! My hour of exercise has never been more fun & I've seen parts of London I would never have done before. The auto gear change takes a bit of getting used to, but it's great & can be over-ridden.
@jimmyhackers ah yes under performs and is overpriced for all the electric car competition right? I swear Tesla haters are even weirder than Tesla fanatics
Please do a test between the new Audi A8l vs new BMW 7-Series vs new Mercedes S-class vs new Jaguar XJ vs new Lexus LS vs new Kia K9 vs new Genesis G90. Like if u agree. #BATTLEOFTHELIMOS Just do it Matt. First thing after lockdown.
Used one in America also, and the 20mph limit is far better, and still feels safe, as the disc brakes are ample in slowing it down. It is possible to derestrict the limiter and travel at higher speeds, they can fit a device, that switches between on road ( 15.5) and off road ( up to 30mph)
I have a eBrompton, the choice was between GoCycle and eBrompton, I chose Brompton because it is smaller and lighter to carry into buildings and shops. You wouldn’t want to lock eBike6 outside the shop or buildings!
The bike ticks lots of boxes, let us know how the bike holds up in the future. Cheers Mat, you've loads of subs I see, doing something right for a Brum.
built my own from a kit. $1300 US for the bike, kit, battery, and several upgrades. my bike has twice the power, 4 times the range, full suspension, 21 speeds pedal, 5 speeds on power, full size wheels, traditional diamond aluminum frame. good luck!
Great E-Bike, definetely an alternative to the E-Brompton, I love the design, but I also agree with you for that price essentials like lights etc should be included already in the package. (Especially in London and for comfort)
Thank you for letting the bus go by. I am a cyclist (not extreme) and I do try to think about other road users . I feel virtuous when I do that and I lose a bit of time, but so what, it is not a race track for cars and neither for cycles.
Hey, in relation to your gear issues, you have a HUB gear setup. They setup works differently to a normal external derailleur setup. You should stop cycling when your changing the gear. Cycle - Stop - Change Gear - start cycling again. It's hard at first but when you get the rhythm is grand. You brake issues look like it just need a tune. If they is a cable it need to be tightened. If there are hydraulic brakes you need to bleed them similar to a car brakes.

The Americans aren't usually correct but on this occasion they are
I used to travel to work 18 miles away by train. Door to door, that's 1 hour. Walking, waiting, train, walking. The actual train journey was just 30 minutes but they were delayed and public transport is awful. You're also constantly waiting around
At 20Mph,I could have got to that work place in... an hour (in theory) It would mean I wouldn't even need public transport
0-15 mph in 12.4 seconds? I'll wait for the Matt Turbo.
Excellent review, Mat. I have both electric and normal bikes. Very happy with both! Tip for you, Mat! Put your heel on the pedal and stretch your leg completely with your hip parallel to the ground. This is your seat height! You will then get much more power to the pedals from your legs.
Your saddle is waaaaaay too low. You'll find it a lot more efficient if you adjust it correctly.
Indeed, noticed that too
Yeah
Awesome showcase of the benefits of e-bikes - I’ve had a Gocycle GS for a few years now - they quickly pay for themselves for urban commuters. Circa 4p charge = 40 miles - I’ve seen big savings vs my monthly travelcard in London - and I feel healthier - much more fun than the tube too!
Brilliant video very enjoyable makes me want to get an e bike although i like normal cycling, you should certainly do other stuff mat
VERY good point about momentum vs safety decisions.
6:47 was waiting for Mat to say barely an inconvenience
Dear Mat, I bought one because I saw this review. A year on and two defects later I regret doing it. 4200 euros down the drain.
It is a good bike to keep in your closet but if you use it a lot, as I did, it goes wrong. It is not maintenance free. Every time it defect electrically, the repairs take ages because everything is placed in the frame.
Your car reviews are brilliant though.
Matt you needed to put the “Parental Advisory Awkward Sounds” warning at 4:18 again 😂
Nice review Mat, very informative, thank you !
The bike looks good! Bring it to Yanni!! 👌🏽
ultrafloss492 yeah, yanni will charge more than the bike to vinyl wrap it
@@BobbyDazzler888 lol! 🤣👌🏽
There's me thinking you were about to ride 40 miles 🤣
Which would be the only true test of its claimed range - and no big deal really. At age 68, I regularly ride my non-electric Brompton 30+ miles; only reason I haven't been going further has been the issue with finding 'pit-stops' for coffee and cake LOL.
Deffo more eBikes. Like your car reviews it was entertaining and really informative.
A bike being "completely maintenance-free"?
You'll find out...
Chain is not maintenance free. Must be lubed and replaced (maybe once or twice a year if used everyday). Not good to have that cover because you can not easily inspect chain.
@@stonehill27 is it chain driven? Could be shaft drive, an enclosed section makes sense if so.
@@lmaoroflcopter Yes could be shaft or belt driven. Can't find info om website. If it's not chain, yes, near maintenance free. If belt driven they would advertise it on website!?
Edit: found a review on website, it's chain.
@@stonehill27 Once or twice a year? Maybe on a fast bike, but surely not on a 3-speed with a more substantial chain?
To be fair, usually you can always adjust the brakes on bikes. Just where the cable attach to the break handle, there should be two pieces around the cable, they're really tiny. You can twist those things to adjust brake intensity and travel
Think you should do some mods.Bit More power bit more speed. Not like policeman going to stop you and ask for proof of power output lol 😂
I think the manufacturer is lucky AF with Mat as someone reviewing and loving their bike. Even I would buy this thing though I'm not a ebike fan.
0:44 Jeremy Clarkson is furious right now!
I think £3K is a lot for a bike that doesn't even come with lights as standard. Plus for that price you can get some pretty decent full size E bikes, yes they wouldn't fold but they'd be more comfortable and have larger capacity batteries. That being said seems like quite a good bike 😁
00:11 I was expecting "good old fashioned... Doug Score.." but review is ok too.
The most affordable electric bike I ever owned was a cute little three speed called a Plugie. It was only $250. It came with a long extension cord as you had to plug it in. One time, I went 200 yards from my home and I got yanked off my bike because my extension cord was only 200 yards in length. I now keep my rides short (199 yards or less.)
lol!
0:36 wow what microphone is that? It sounds great!
aye mat is gonna hit 200k soon
congrats in advance bro
keep it up
and never leave carwow
14:06 that's a classic bicycle problem . That usually breaks within a week . Atleast with all the bicycles I ever had
The more you pedal, the warmer you will be :) It's a win from any perspective.
cmon Matt, when are you starting your fitness channel and how do I get biceps like yours
I can't tell you without getting demonetized.
Great vid, thanks. Yeah, please more bike stuff like this. I really like E-bikes in big crowded cities.
This bike vs your daily driver G63
Your so right about the flight or fight mode, it comes from doing sports especially cycling. I know, been there done that.
James May: It’s called “go-kee-kul.”
Surprised Tesla didn’t make it.....
Nope, musk has phobia with cyclist
@jimmyhackers ah yes under performs and is overpriced for all the electric car competition right? I swear Tesla haters are even weirder than Tesla fanatics
This e-bike is growing on me. I like the enclosed chain and overall bike design.
"the Bentley of eBikes" then you see the £25k limited edition s-works turbo levo sl with gold on it
But will it blend?
First time I have seen your channel but like it. I like the bike and would appreciate a variety of products. Thanks 😊
Mat, film more about ur Fiat 126p! Maybe some upgrades or drag races haha
Riding that in your garden and driveway during lockdown is going to be fun mate
Please do a test between the new Audi A8l vs new BMW 7-Series vs new Mercedes S-class vs new Jaguar XJ vs new Lexus LS vs new Kia K9 vs new Genesis G90.
Like if u agree.
#BATTLEOFTHELIMOS
Just do it Matt.
First thing after lockdown.
I think that’s too much cars to be in one video.
Congrats to 200k, Mat! You gave me laughs with every video you put out so far! Thank you!
how much can i save on this through carwow?
Used one in America also, and the 20mph limit is far better, and still feels safe, as the disc brakes are ample in slowing it down. It is possible to derestrict the limiter and travel at higher speeds, they can fit a device, that switches between on road ( 15.5) and off road ( up to 30mph)
Let you into a little secret, We left the EU !!
And now Boris is dying from Corona. Karma struck immediately.
Hi researching foldable Ebike for city commuting. And enjoyed this video.. very useful info and Mat is very good presenter. 👍👍
I have a eBrompton, the choice was between GoCycle and eBrompton, I chose Brompton because it is smaller and lighter to carry into buildings and shops. You wouldn’t want to lock eBike6 outside the shop or buildings!
Been riding two years on mine . no issues . Build your own .
The bike ticks lots of boxes, let us know how the bike holds up in the future. Cheers Mat, you've loads of subs I see, doing something right for a Brum.
Lovely. Thanks for buying and reviewing it.
Yes Mat, more ebike reviews please! Also long term reviews of the Gocycle would be sweet. Stay safe.
I've watched every single video on carwow. Love your reviews mate. More ebike vids please!
built my own from a kit.
Hey Matt!, congrats on your purchase of this e-bike !
your reviews are so good man
It is better than any car review Mat has ever made...
The most amazing video a e-cycle ever going to get..
You have nice choice in shoes too. i am addicted to looking at your shoes. I use pause button to look at them
thank you. it is a useful video. We are living in London and thinking of getting a gocycle one as well.
Nice bike, actually in the USA we are allowed to have a max of 750w motor and still be legal on the streets. Keep up the good work.
Good review, the electric 6 speed brompton is 18kg, I looked at this bike and ended up going for the furox as its the lightest folding electric bike
