Robert Llewellyn has been using the Gocycle G3 folding electric commuter bike for some time now and loves it. But look, Gocycle have been busy working on an even lighter and faster folding electric commuter bike, the Gocycle GX.
Robert talks to Richard Thorpe, founder and Managing Director of Gocycle, about the improvements in the Gocycle GX model and takes it for a spin. They compare it with the Gocycle G3C and also discuss the benefits of commuting by bike as well as Gocycle’s innovative #ebikemiles scheme (where employees are paid per mile for commuting by e-bike).

Stereotypically aged 40, have a full bike license and would love to know what's hot in the E-motorbike segments, as I'm moving into my midlife crisis I think I would be very grateful. To see Jonny or Robert on a bike would be pretty amusing too.

very good questions in the episode, and from them, what do i want to know for bicycling? "when will exhaust fumes abate." "when will car traffic be safer." questions directly related to the growth rate of bicycle traffic. in the iterim i want to learn about bicycles that cruise the boulevards in style, relaxing rides, perhaps with cargo capacity.

There are many cheap folding ebikes sub £700 in the UK. Just ask google or Ebay. I wouldn't bother. Your Lectric would be illegal in the UK as it goes 28 mph and has a 500w instead of 250w motor. So you would need a motorbike license and insurance and you won't get the latter as it isn't a registered motorbike etc.

    • @bigfarmerUK

@Connor @onlineo I appreciate you will find cheaper options on market but worry about the overall quality of components and battery life etc. My view is that you generally get what you pay for. A sensible price point needs to be struck. The current EU/UK regulations restricting us to pedelec, low powered motors, and what technology/industry can deliver show disparity. Same issues with e-scooters. I do cycle and want to support the e-bike revolution but remain sat on the fence right now.

    • @anthoslykos6294

The price comes with the exclusivity of a developing technology. It took years for teslas to come down to a reasonable (yet still high) price because they had to put so much money into the gigafactory and ramping up production on batteries.
On top of that you have governments and lobbyists that dont want to put the effort into infrastructure or the promotion of cleaner cars becauseof money (thanks trump)
There are a lot of hurdles to get over before EVs become just as everyday and cheap like ice cars, give it a few years and keep and eye on new cars that coming out, prices have been coming down and hopefully we'll see a really big boom from this industry.
(5k for a bike though is ridiculous)

There are MANY comments here about price, IE that it is too high compared to a mass-produced high volume bike.
Some things should perhaps be taken into account:
QUALITY: You can get relatively 'low' priced aftermarket motors, if you look around. From China. You get what you pay for: they may break down after a fairly low mileage, the 'support' does not speak English as a first language, and you will have to send it back to China for repair. (No, I am not talking about Bafang here).
The bikes themselves have to be more robust, as you have the weight of the motor, plus the weight of the battery, and then the massive increase in torque from a motor that can put strain on a frame in ways it was not designed for.
If you want a 'seamless' take-up of the drive, that feeds the power in smoothly, that comes at a cost. You can get a drive that gives lots of power, but as soon as you put pressure on the pedal, you take off like a jack rabbit! Life just might get quite exciting if that happens at the wrong time.
To repeat: You get what you pay for.
From the many older folks I see riding eBikes on my local tracks, it gives them a way to get exercise to suit their physical ability, that they could never do without the motor. It helps them get out, with out the expense of a car. It DOES change their lives. And I have not heard any of them say that they regret getting one. These are not 'Rich' folks: These are of a generation that 'Knows the Value' of money, and does NOT waste it. But they regard the cost as an 'Investment.' As did I. And I also have no regrets.

It's a beautiful design and for sure I'd like one of these. The prices are nuts of course. I bought a second hand Gtech ebike for around 1/10 these prices, it works a treat and it's probably almost as much fun to nip into town on: certainly less of a worry to leave locked-up somewhere too.

    • @alexandervonbraun
      @alexandervonbraun 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It's not the same though is it? Just because it has 2 wheels doesn't mean they are entirely comparable. On the moped you have to buy insurance, possibly parking space, and after the 3 year grace period you have to do a yearly MOT in the UK. It also doesn't allow the freedom to take it inside a flat, ride in cycle friendly parks and canals. You don't have to worry about parking in general. The last thing to consider is the exercise you would also gain from a electric bicycle, which there is none on a moped. So the 3K works out to be more overall.

@@alexandervonbraun let’s take a walk. I used to have a scooter but it was stolen. When I returned to London and apartment living the folding ebike was the only option. I commuted 40km round trip into central London in 55/60 mins, whilst getting exercise and feeling safer in defined cycle routes. Previously it was 45 mins on a moped 125cc and in the 10 years since traffic is worse. It feels expensive but you are paying for low volume engineering. You can buy a cheap car for c £15k but millions pay much more every year. Horses for courses as they say. If you buy it for commuting (and use it), then it’s cost neutral against PT costs, but also enjoyable. There is a premium also for its reduced weight. If this existed 4 years ago l would have bought one. I bought a R&M tinker for similar money. It’s c 10kg heavier (I viewed it as my daily weightlifting exercise).

I put an ebike kit on my wife's Dahon folding bike, and paid a grand total of about £500 (including the bike) for everything. 12kwh lithium battery with BMS, 24v front hub motor (so wife has 2wd if she needs it) and it folds up exactly the same way. Like, *exactly* the same way.
If I can build the same thing for 500 quid in my shed, then this bike should not be half the cost of a second hand Nissan Leaf.
There's no way that they cannot make the same bike and sell it for a grand.

My only complaint is that it's a hub motor e-bike from your close up shots, and not a mid drive or "crank motor" e-bike. Mid drives can use the gearing while hub motors can't. In some cases you get longer range in the "eco" or "touring" mode of mid drive e-bikes. Having said all of this, I have a hub motor e-bike that I bought in 2013, and it's a 2012 model. The batteries are still viable and I get good range for an e-bike 7 years old. But I'm going to upgrade soon to one made this year hopefully.

Wow two episodes not about cars another great episode.
I think the reason a lot of people who bought the gocycle actually bought them is because of their software that enabled their bikes to go around 20+ mph on the app so if they got pulled over they could covertly switch it back to legal speed unnoticed, where as other bikes didn't have that so if by chance you got stopped by the police for going fast then you unlike the gocycle you could end up getting a ticket plus.
But it's a nice bike as well.
However if we are talking ease of use you wouldn't really go for a bicycle at all, if we are talking ease of carrying, storing, good range, not working too hard and so on, then you simply wouldn't bother with a bicycle at all, you would go for an electric scooter.
And let's face it if you are gonna get nicked for riding one you might as well just go for the best that you can find and yes you can get them ranging from 17 mph top speed up to 55/60 mph top speed so if you are gonna be an outlaw using a scooter you might as well go all out I suspect some people think.
But the price differs hugely from as little as 110 pounds to over 1500 pounds this bike is around 3 grand or more, so because the govt has still not legalised the scooters you could buy two of the high spec scooters and have some change left over for the low end scooter for the price of one Gocycle.

@@kisskissg60 You are not wrong they are unfortunately far too expensive.. But its also economies of scale.. that 'premium' pushbike was probably made in mind boggling numbers so the tooling to make it cost nothing when distributed over all of them. You can pay way more for a non-electric bike as you pay for the lightness which generally means lots of fancy jigs and man hours to make carbon fiber frames.
This e-bike seems to fall into that latter range -> Looking at it unfortunately I don't think they are overcharging because there are folks who'd pay - I'd say it probably costs 2/3rd of the asking price in materials and construction man hours minimum (though I'd want hands on with one to see just what its all made of and how for confidence in that). Add in they have to recoup the tooling and design costs over a small number of bikes sold it isn't unreasonable as an asking price.
Electric conversions or non-folding less fancy stock electrics are much more affordable, if still too pricey for me to be interested.

There are plenty of bikes available (including folding models) which are essentially just conventional bikes with electric motors. They mightn't be as compact or slick as this but they cost not much more than a decent unpowered bike and they do the job. The two technologies that made them possible are the lithium ion battery and the DC brushless motor, both of which are commodity items these day. Everything else is just technology for the sake of technology. (No you don't need bluetooth. I have a monochrome LCD display. It tells me everything I need to know because really the only I need to know is when it's time to plug in the charger.)
