    Don’t collect for value. Only collect for yourself. Some of the crappiest games ever made are really expensive. Enjoy your gaming hunts and have fun.

      Werd...i collect for nostalgia/memories and don't care for the "SUPER RARE HOLY GRAIL" games that cost 5x more than their "value". My brother let his boss borrow all of our Genesis games back in the day and only got a few back...now I'm enjoying collecting those games I used to have or games/systems I wanted back then but mom and dad wouldn't get for us...although one of the games was MUSHA and that's going for more than I want to pay..womp womp.

      @@vice86 exactly. I picked up MUSHA on Ali Express (repro) for like 15 bucks, since I don't care about value. The game plays perfect...even came with a box and manual.

      I had a turbo as a kid and put off for a long time collecting for it. Could have got in before the price rise. But now I'll just get the handful I had back then. Every vintage item collecting thing has gone from fun hunting to prices out of the hobby.

      I pretty much collect games that i know i will come back to. For example I have Bloodstained Ritual of the Night and it is challenging. I know it will take a while for exploring, and although its been review bombed on the switch for supposed issues, i never experienced any issues. It will take a while because i enjoy every little thing about it. Mostly i play and enjoy Diablo III. My collection doesn't consist of Nintendo flagship titles for my switch because i want to play something other than Mario and zelda, i want to support indie and retro titles.

    As someone who has been collecting things for a long time, I have these rules for myself.
    1) Never treat your collection as an investment.
    Explanation: Doing both will never work equally well. Either be a collector or an investor.
    2) Never try to swindle anyone regardless if you are buying or selling.
    Explanation: I don't think this needs explaining.
    3) Don't spend more than you should, never buy anything "collectable" on credit card and don't get too attached to your collection.
    Explanation: Always have your priorites set and spend accordingly. Your family and friends should come first. Things will never fill that void.

      I have bought some collectable games on credit card before, but only when they're things that are extremely rare that I've really wanted at a low price they likely won't ever reach again. For instance, if I found a $80 mint cib copy of Valkyrie Profile or Suikoden II for the PS1, I'd grab it immediately, no questions asked. Wouldn't even care if I had to be a little more frugal on groceries that month to make it happen. I am attached to my collection, but it wouldn't ever interfere with family and friends.

    I'd completely recommend getting yourself a PS3 if you want to start collecting.
    -Great range of exclusives covering a wide variety of genres
    -Amazing library of third party titles
    -A host of retro HD compilations are available for the console, including PS2 era classics and more retro stuff, so it's a good way to play some retro games without breaking the bank
    -Can play all your PS1 games via HDMI so it's a great alternative if you want to start collecting for the PS1
    -Both the console and most of its games are available for outrageously cheap prices at the moment

    The question doesn’t make sense. You don’t “start” collecting. You acquire games throughout the years that you enjoy, then bam - you have a collection. Keep doing that, and your collection gets bigger.
    Asking “what should I collect” sounds like a temporary urge to have a collection. If you wanted to collect games, you would already have games.. you know.. from the hobby of gaming.. I can go spend $1000 on eBay buying dozens of PS3 games but would that hold any sentimental value to you?

    • @beezle1976
      @beezle1976 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Doesnt work that way for everyone.
      Some people have had only a few dozen games that theyve swapped, sold, exchanged, etc. for years.... always gaming but never collecting. Perhaps these people are now in a position to start collecting a bigger library.
      Others simply decided it looks like a fun hobby so got onboard, but arent sure where to start.
      There's a million and one scenarios for a million and one people.
      Not one of them collects in a more correct / better way than any of the others.

      beezle1976 ya I’m kinda in that boat as I am 18 now and I finally have the money to actually start going out and getting games that I really love where as before I would always have to wait for Christmas birthday etc to get any new games too bad my favorite console atm is GameCube cuz we all know how GameCube prices are these days

    • @GeddyRC
      @GeddyRC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      beezle1976 true, and a follow up to that for a perfect answer to the original question of “how to start collecting” - if you find yourself in that position, buy back the games you enjoyed but sold due to needing the money. That’s exactly what I did. Once I did that, I started buying titles I’d been curious about - if I liked them, I kept them - if I played them for an hour or so and it wasn’t my thing, I ebay’d it right back.
      5 or so years later and I have an awesome collection that’s leagues from the biggest, but it’s a perfectly curated collection that reflects me, from my childhood to present time.
      Just to clarify, I don’t consider there a “good or bad” way to be a collector, but I think a collection of things that hold no personal value is not a great collection. Collecting for the love of _what you’re collecting_ so that it reflects the person is what makes it truly great.

    I wonder if the rise and fall of interest in systems/games is based around people's age and their nostalgia for them. People who grew up with the N64 and PS1 are now generally getting to an age where they have more space and disposable income. Doesn't surprise me that demand is increasing and therefore cost.

    My best advice is to avoid buying filler.
    When I first started collecting I bought tons of games in the genres I liked, which looked great on the shelf, but 30-40% of which I would likely never play. Now I've reduced my collection to only top titles I will definitely someday play, I am happier with it. Furthermore, I have reduced my purchasing to very selective titles now, making hunting for them the more fun.

    Super Video ! For Retro computers for early generations, il will certainly recommand the Amiga 500. 1) It's so easy to use, switch on, put the disk and that's all (easy as a console). 2) It's a 16 bits system, the graphics are still good, and less dated compare to 8 bit computers. Not to mention music capabilities which are still great. 3) Try Speedblall 2, Battle Squadron, Turrican 2, Lionheart, Another World, Flashback, Dune the adventure game... Plenty of games are still fun to play. And specially if you are North American, you will discover an exotic and mostly european universe with a lot of gems you don't know (try Moonstone !!!!).

  • @NotesandNerds
    @NotesandNerds 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My recommendation to anyone getting started with collecting, start with what you know. I had an Atari 2600 when I was growing up, so a LOT of nostalgia was there. My old system was sold on a yardsale when I was in the Marines in the mid-90s. So, naturally that is where I started with the retro collecting. I would always recommend starting with "commons", and go with a varied set of titles. Something that captures the full scope of the console. Then branch out from there.
    After you get to a point of satisfaction with that system, move onto something you never owned. I did that, and have produced a reasonable collection of consoles and titles that I enjoy playing.
    Last bit of advice for the new collectors. Do NOT fall into the trap of "competing" with other collectors. It's one thing to show off your collection, but do NOT ever think you have to go out and collect everything. That is a rabbit hole you do not want to fall into.

    Go to thrift shops, pawn shops, and garage sales as much as you can. Their stock changes daily, so go to as many as you can as often as you can. You never know what will pop up for under $5. Sometimes games that go for $20-30 will go on the shelf for $2. Consoles get donated/pawned/etc all the time, too. Goodwill has a place most people call "the bins" in larger cities. You can bulk pay for things that didn't get sold in Goodwill. That means that you don't pay by title, or rarity, or any of that - you pay by weight. Same if someone has a garage sale. They aren't looking for top dollar, they're looking for shelf space. Don't pay eBay prices for well known games.
    It was mentioned in the video, but know when to buy. There was a time in the early 00s when SNES and NES games were just old games, and nobody sold them for more than $10-20. The same goes for every generation. If you think a game will be a future classic/cult classic, buy it while big box stores have hundreds of copies for under $10, because you might find yourself paying top dollar for it later. Sometimes good games get mixed in with the shovelware pile, too.

    Original NES is going down in price, so now might be a great time to grab the classics. Also Game Boy has remained affordable, and some very expensive NES games are cheap on Game Boy and are basically the same experience. Both of these systems are a great way to build a classic collection, fast.
    I would pick up the nicer complete-in-box DS games while you still can. It's only a matter of time before all you can find is cart-only, IMO, and a lot of the library is still affordable.
    But Vita is definitely the way to go right now. Lots of great games for under $10, top-end games range from $20-40, really interesting late-release and limited release games. They look great on an HDTV, too. When the Vita enters the public consciousness again, people are going to be floored by all the games they didn't realize were on it. Games on this system in general got a low print run, so the writing's on the wall that this could explode.

    I was born in 1982, and the Atari 2600 was a little before my time but I still like it. I actually didn't play video games until about 1989-90. My family just didn't have video games until then. But Atari was one of my early experiences, even though it had already been released about a decade before I played it. I also have interest in collecting any good console of the past, whether it's 1st gen or 7th.

Within the code you find monsters to fight your friends with when y'all connect your scanners. I think they had trading cards too so you could collect the monster and card. It was Pokemon before Pokemon

    Good video MJ. The passion / interest argument is the most important. I collect for Sega, never had the systems as a kid & my first system was the Dreamcast, but that led to getting a Saturn and a Genesis / Sega CD console and a Master System, which I have all wired up & connected. That led to collecting Sega games on other systems after they became software only. So, like you said, being passionate about one segment in gaming can lead to a very satisfying collecting experience.

    N64 in Australia has been nuts in the past 12 months. I’d say prices have almost doubled and you have to be really quick if you see a deal because it’s very competitive!

      When is the best time to get in on the sales.

  • @pigs18
    @pigs18 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Three simples rules:
    1) Patience. Patience. Patience.
    I own over forty consoles and I can count on one hand the number of times that I spent over $150 with most well under that figure. If you wait until the mid or end of the next console's life cycle you can pick up hardware and software damn cheap. Now is the time to pick up PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox, and 360 games and consoles.
    2) Popularity and scarcity do not equal value; in fact, most "valuable" games are currently overvalued.
    The one I always go to is Atari 2600 Pac-Man. Popular game but there are more copies than there are working systems. It's not worth more than at most $2. It's one of the titles I check when walking into any vintage game store for the first time. If they're asking more $5 for that or E.T. (they still have to pay the light bill) I'll likely head for the door. Also, most people that want Rush 'N' Attack or an Odyssey2 probably already own one.
    3) Your games are EXTREMELY unlikely to increase in value. Also, what you paid for something has ZERO influence on its current value.
    A vast majority games don't retain value against inflation. Most actually lose value against inflation. Sure, a game that you spent $40 in 2018 might sell for $50 in 2028 but that might be $35 in 2018 dollars.

    My advice: Don't waste money on any old cartridge systems at all! Buy an Everdrive or mod a mini system and you're done. That leaves just disc based or portable systems to collect for. Pick your top 3-5 consoles and start with collecting the oldest system or one that has the cheapest games. Focus on games that mean something to you or that interest you. Don't fill your collection with games you won't play. Sell old things you don't use anymore to pay for your game collection.
