      Just a normal perspective distortion from shooting from far, and then to fool the perception is to use a super telephoto lens to get a tight framing for background control.
      You can see that camera was moved slightly up and to right to shoot the ace alone, but then still together when both heads are visible. Finally you see the perspective when it is zoomed out to wide angle to show the whole scene and the distances difference becomes obvious.
      Many believes that movies and TV shows are shot with wide angle lenses, while in reality they very rarely are if there is just enough space. As using long telephoto lens allows to control the background, get it blurry and yet have enough depth of field to get the actor fully in focus and give them some freedom to move toward and further from the camera so they don't drop out of focus. Same time you give more space to actors when you are on opposite side of the room shooting them and in soap operas you give them change to look the line cards next to the camera.

      This is actually great and complicated piece of storytelling. We later learn that Herod knew that the townfolk had hired a killer to take him out, and he assumed it was Ace. So he draws out the killing and expects a reaction, but the people are all flat - this wasn't the guy they had pinned their hopes on, he was just extra.
      On first viewing the scene plays like he is milking for cheers, but he was actually expecting the onlookers to be devastated, and was genuinely puzzled when this was not the case.

    • @mckenzie.latham91

      Little Bill from Unforgiven is a good antagonist but he’s not a straight out villain
      he’s a sheriff who while at times will abuse his power and position but usually to keep the peace and safety of the town
      We see him as a villain because our protagonist is Clint eastwood’s character, though as admitted in the film eastwood’s character is a man whose murdered men women and children by the truckloads
      even Ned his friend was a killer and a murderer as well
      Meanwhile here, Gene’s character John Herod is a total and utter monster, a villain of the utmost intelligence and ruthlessness with the speed and skill with his guns to back him up
      and Gene is able to play this character for all he’s worth as a true villain

    • @LucianDevine
      @LucianDevine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He only had to take time to line up a shot when he was facing Cort after each of the explosions, which likely disoriented him a little. Then factor in that he was also basically sitting on the ground leaning on his other hand. So the angle and motion is completely different, in addition to the mental aspect of him actually being scared of Cort, as seen by his shaking hand when he's getting ready to draw.
      As for when he duels The Lady, he's caught off guard, possibly still disoriented, all his men are dead, and Cort is waiting for him if he wins. Despite all of this though, he still fights her to basically a "draw" on the first shot, even when she makes the first move, or likely does. Duels like theirs and the second shot against Ace are hard to tell, since there is no clock to let us assume they started or reacted at the same time. The second shot is even harder to judge since we cut from The Lady aiming her gun at him to having to bring it forward. There are four things we can add to the previous things though, and that's Herod seeing and likely feeling the hole in his chest, the adrenaline or possible lack of adrenaline if he's coming down plus shock, be it physical or mental, and finally him having to bring his gun up and around from when he had spread his arm out a bit.
