For me the most ridiculously funny part of this movie was how the spectators crowd up on all sides of the duels as if there's a screen protecting them from stray bullets. Or Herod staging the fights in front of his own house which would get shot up over the course of the tournament.
Oddly enough, there's actually historical precedence for that. The famous gunfighter/lawman Wild Bill Hickok had a number of real life showdowns and people would actually line the streets like this as though it was a sporting event.
Well, first of all, those were different times. People were much more used to death and the notion of safety did not exist. In any case, take a look at any video of early 80's rallying and you will notice a similar trend regarding spectators getting close. Nothing changes. And regarding the fights taking place in front of Herod's hose: i think this was a symbolic gesture, reminding everybody who's in charge and the value of this gesture was far greater than any damage the house might receive during the duels. Plus, in a way, the town's people paid for that house, through the "taxes" imposed by Herod on them.
Or the fact that the townsfolk could've used their pooled money to hire a marksman with a scoped rifle to safely snipe Herod from a few hundred yards away at any one of the many moments he's casually exposed in the street, such as during his precisely scheduled duels in which he's standing perfectly still for an entire minute.
@@CognizantCheddar Well, I think there were plenty of opportunities (or ways) to kill Herod but I presume he had left instructions to his men to enact revenge on the town's people should he die as a result of an obvious assassination attempt. And let's not forget how they burned down and killed everybody's in the monastery/orphanage from which they brought Cort in the beginning of the movie, so clearly they did not shy away from such murders. So presumably making Herod die in the inherently deadly competition he initiated and in which willingly took part was a safer option.
any time someone goes flying when they get shot in a movie, it just makes me laugh. Every action has an equal an opposite reaction. so if you fired a projectile with enough force to lift a 200lbs man 2 feet off the ground...guess what...you just shattered every bone in your arm.
Fairly underrated western movie maybe a little rough on its edges. I watched this a few times when I was a teen, it is quite entertaining. The Lady bore resemblance to Sadie Adler from Red Dead Redemption 2, both are emotionally traumatized by their loss of their love ones and rely on gun fights to alleviate their emotional pain.
Reminds me of Lars Ulrich's tennis career. He was one of Denmark's top 10 players in his age group but when his family moved to Southern California in his teens, he couldn't even make his high school's varsity team. His sports dreams crushed, he was forced to turn to the drums and co-found Metallica.
I bet that he ( Herod ) in a million years would have never imagined that that little blonde haired girl who he made kill her own father would be the one to kill him one day
You bet?? You bet?!?!!!? Nooo... You bet?!?? You fu*king kiding me you bet according your conclus.... while watched some scene of the movie and bring your cheap opinion of unimportant thing of the movie story... OMG
Herod was faster than Ellen. She got her gun out first but he shot first and hit her first before she got her shot off. He just wasn't accurate this time around but she was though maybe he moved her to be that accurate when he hit her which is pretty ironic.
It's perfect for TH-cam Shorts because the duels are built up, shot and framed to absolute perfection. The flak is evident when seeing the movie and story as a whole, because for me, atleast, it's a tough watch.
@@jjjordan3881 western movies back in the day became really popular in italy so when italian film makers decided to try making their own western movies they tended to be on the gory side and much more action oriented then the typical hero cowboy westerns from the states so the nickname "spaghetti western" became almost its own type of western movie all together
8:15 In a Storm, she is the Trooper, however, once at the bar, the guy walks in, and shoots like one..... Hits for misses. Mwhahhahahahahahahahahahahahaaaa
20 ft away from Spotted Horse lying on the ground. No checking if he is still breathing or has a pulse. “Man’s dead.” *Gets up 15 seconds later* How did you become a Doctor?
I've never seen this movie but watching clip by clip it unfortunately gets worse and worse.....it started out compelling but as it went on became more and more ridiculous..... like they ran out of money and ideas.
Sadly, it's not a good film - especially when you consider the extraordinarily talented actors. The screenplay was bad and the directing was truly awful. The cinematography was pretty good, however.
Whys that ? Need a bit more information to back up that statement ? It's pretty bold. I've seen alot of films. And trust me this one isn't even close to being the worst. . . . Personally I rather liked it.
Gene Hackman is one of the best.
When he is bad, he is really bad.
I also heard he was really bad to work with.
This movie gets a little forgotten because Gene was such a monster in Unforgiven. I love it though, what a cast.
Every duel in this movie was awesome!
Agreed
The backward somersault was a bit much!
Totally agreed.
Sergio Leone saw this and grinned.

When the 1st bullet goes straight through Herod but the 2nd makes him backflip😂😂😂

This movie doesn't take itself too seriously. It's a satire of westerns.
6:12 “if you live to see the dawn it’s because I allow it” one of the coldest lines in cinematic history!!
It's a Sam Raimi western.
Not for the purists, obviously: but a whole lot of fun 😅
I know this film caught a lot of flak, but I really enjoyed it.
I enjoy you
Yeah, it’s a movie about duelling. You have to move it up a little bit.
Once you know it’s just silly fun it’s a cool movie… I think they went too far with the camp but that’s Raimi’s style…
I thought it was great, it's stupid and funny.

Jigsaw wants to play a game!
'Am I fast, or is Sweden just a very small place?'
The Swede was also lucky, he didn't make it to round 2 when Herrod changed the rules to fighting to the death.

Overall the casting was great, but yea Mr Hackman was an excellent villain
Gene Hackman a great actor . And one of the best

I'm sure he has had nightmares of the exact same thing for years.

Just a lucky shot from her

She must be using a 500s&w to make a grown man do a backflip like that🤣
I wanted to see Ace's (Lance Henrickson) dual , I liked his character the best
Did she just beat Jigsaw in a gunfight!?
Please be quiet
Holy crap, that IS Tobin Bell.
@brettlinthicum6649
Why should he be quiet? Dude is right, she did kill jigsaw lol
A very good movie.
Cowboy/ cowgirl outfits are unique and beautiful

05:45 - that spinning revolver is one of the most hilarious looking props ever. Very 1990's. 🙂
Gene Hackman is outstanding as Herod.
The last scene was good.

great cast, great director, awesome movie
They went ham on the Dutch angle zoom.
Ace Hanlon fight was the best IMO
Belly full of hot air line always gets me
Super underrated for such a good movie
What in the fork is underrated about it? One of the most watched westerns in recent times, and you say it's very underrated. By who?? So irritating.😫
This movie has some grade-A cheese, but it's awesome.
Lol did she reholster and redraw in that final scene???😂😂😂
No.
If Herod didn't force Cort to fight, Cort wouldn't have needed to break his vow.
you think?
😂
oh boy...love how she wins the duel...then immediately flags her own head with a loaded gun...
Gene Hackman has played some real bad hombres!
Yas👊💪
I wish Bob Munden would have been in this movie
That just wouldn't be fair 😂
Yes Eli
2:55 I guess he wanted to play a game.
Whats the record for dramatic zoom ins, in one scene?
…. What kind of caliber makes a man do an entire backflip?🤣🤣🤣
4:14 Not a very good preacher, is he?
People don't go flying when they get shot, they just drop!
Sometimes they don’t even do that for anywhere from 60 to 90 seconds.
My man doesn't know Sam Raimi.
John Kramer used his powers as Jigsaw to go back in time

Моя любимая дуэль Эллен-Дред
Meanwhile in Germany: they were still dueling with swords
Still, I count the rounds in those six-shooters and it seems to hold more than six shots without reloading.

Is that Jigsaw fighting Hellen?

Yes
This movie would seriously be in the spaghetti western genre
