    Not sure if anyone mentioned it but you’re suppose to unlock the pins by pulling the white tab away from the connector. Insert the pins then lock the pins in place by pressing the white tab back in. This is common on most electrical connectors.

    Thank You! Installed the BlendMount and the Mirror Tap in less than 20 minutes.
    Specs
    Infiniti (Also the same on Z)
    Smallest Taps work best
    Controlled Power Wire - Red(sorta) & Black
    Ground Wire - Black Center Wire
    Constant Power Wire - Orange(sorta) & Black
    Installed Taps at side of wires. Couldn't get Taps inserted at top or bottom as in video.
    I hope this helps Nissan & Infiniti owners.
    Thanks again!

      Whoa. I literally was trying to install my Mirrortap in my 2007 G35 4 hours ago as well. My Mirrortap connections are too wide unfortunately, so I'm wondering if I can shave them down.
      @Vortex Radar: Shout out to you! I ended up getting an R3 because of your videos. Subscribed. A couple questions in case you happen to see this:
      1. Does your Mirrortap wire just dangle when you are not using it? I was hoping the hardwire would make things cleaner but soon I'll have a dangling wire.
      2. Do you end up heat wrapping the red tips of the Mirrortap to give it a more OEM looks?
      3. Is it ok to leave a radar detector in the hot hot heat of a California summer?
      Thanks much!

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha awesome!
      I actually don’t run mine normally. It’s just for the video. Cleaning things up is a great idea though!
      As for the sun, the mirror will block most of the sun so you should be alright. :)

    • @spullibwd
      @spullibwd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +direngreyt
      I ran the wire over the mirror post from left to right in efforts of reducing dangling.
      The mirror tap wires seem to be quite fragile so the plan is to use additional shrink wrap for support. At present my wires aren’t wrapped.
      A couple summers ago I inadvertently left my Passport Max 2 exposed on the passenger seat and when I attempted to power on the device an error message displayed. Shortly after the occurrence I purchased the Max360 and it’s been fine stored in the glove box during summer months here in Hotlanta. I also use the Max360 on one of my bikes and it performs well while directly exposed to the sun.
      I realize your question is directed to Vortex, however just thought I’d share my experiences to serve as an additional reference.

    I had to use the smallest ones and they weren’t snug enough IMO, but the next size up wouldn’t go in and I put pretty good pressure on it. I’m an instrumentation electrician at a chemical plant and the leads not being tight enough IMO cause a little concern for it possibly coming out. I used the zip tie to hold the tap to the wiring harness for the mirror so hopefully that will be enough string relief to prevent them from coming out

    I will add that if your mirror does not have a power source you can also tap into the map lights on the overhead console. That will require extending the usual power cord that comes with the kits and finding positive and negative wires, but the install looks clean and professional when done. I had to do that on my 19 Escape SE. It's close to a base model so no power to the rear view mirror. But my install looks amazing with no power cords hanging down to a cigarette lighter.

    I was able to RVM mount a BlackVue DR900S and Uniden R3 by using components from 2 BlendMount kits and 2 MirrorTap kits, to tap into the rain sensor connector. All of it is on a 5A circuit that runs the overhead electronics, in my BMW. Didn't have to run a bunch of wire around the car and it is easily removable, should I have to sell. Of course, I also did load testing, to make sure the OEM and 3rd party components didn't put the load anywhere near 5A.

    i think my 370z has the exact same mirror. the only problem that i have with mounting a radar detector up high like on the mirror is it blocks my vision. i sometimes have to duck a little just to see past my mirror. so i have to suction cup it to my window down low.

  • @utsavratti
    @utsavratti 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This was super helpful, thank you! Can you do a tutorial on a RVM tap for both dash cam and radar detector? I want to tap my RVM to power both a dash cam and a radar detector. BlendMount doesn't make a mount that will hold both, so thinking of getting one just for the dash cam and keeping the radar on a suction mount to make it easy to remove when not in use. But I'm unsure if I can tap the RVM to power both devices or if that could cause a circuit overload.

    • @tmurph247

      Depending on your car their may be a larger connector that the plug to your rearview connects to above the headliner. This is what I connected my 2 mirror taps into in order to power my dashcam and radar detector. Much easier than trying to ram 2 taps into the smaller plug on the back of the mirror.

      You can measure the inputs to the power cable where it goes into the mirror while the car is on to see if the cable is getting power. You can try measuring the pins in the plug that go into the RD, but they’re super tiny and you risk your probes touching and shorting out the connection.

    You could go to any local junkyard and make your own mirror concealed display inside the mirror just open up a salvaged mirror and put the display inside or you might be able to hide the detector inside if its small enough its a cheap idea to make a concealed mount and if you do it well enough it might fool someone inside the car until it comes on.

    As for these "TAPS", I take it it is a friction fit between the connector housing and the factory electrical connector. It is not like the tap slides into the connector itself. I am wondering how good a connection that is over time?
    As for a power source, wiring that appears to be powered all the time, can actually shut down after a few minutes. In my vehicle, it switches off after 6 minutes.

    Hello... so the power at 12 or 13 volts will come directly to my Uniden and no need to reduce it? How about the amps ?I'm going to hard wire it to a bike spare harness

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right, it's designed to run at the 12-13v your car provides. As far as the amperage, it uses less than half an amp and there's typically enough extra power in your RVM or wherever to power a detector.

    I have to say I am a first time radar owner and my r3 has come going on a little test drive in cop alley. Thoughts I didn't see a usb cable or anything for updates. How do I update the radar?

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't come with a USB cable, you're right. You'll need a Mini USB cable to do the update. Basically just download the software from their website once it's out, plug in the radar detector (not radar) into your computer, and click the update button. Here's a look at how to do it with the LRD950: th-cam.com/video/vM0MmxWoEnc/w-d-xo.html

      Vortex Radar thanks I have one more quick question if I press the mute button twice that just ignores that radar for the location learning that radar or is it learning the location ? Example I drive by a grocery store that has the skidding doors I know it's picking it up I don't know if I should keep driving by it or double mute it. I took a risk and double muted my job since there is usually no cops in that area and we have electronic skidding doors.

    Hey Vortex, i drive a 2011 328i, if I get the mirror tap wires, which I want, but some other hard wire kits come with a fuse 2-3amp. The ones from your links don't come with a fuse, so I'm curious to how the mirror tap works, thanks for all your help. Also I ordered UnidenDW Direct WIre Power Cord for Uniden from Best Radar Detectors, which I'm probably gona send back to get the mirror tap.

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They all come with a fuse. You just can't see it. It's a little in-line fuse that's built into the cable and covered with black heat shrink.

    Been looking at a blend mount and one of these tap type power cables for my max 360.
    My 360 came with the "smart cable" and I'd like to keep that type cable/feature.
    I have found one cable on amazon that comes up when I search the blend mount for the max 360, but it's super long. I was hoping for something short like you had in this video. But apparently no such animal exists:( that I can find anyway.
    Do you know of any specific options?
    If not I guess I'll have to tuck the excess away, or maybe experiment with shortening the cable. Just not sure if I can shorten it without messing some of the "smart cable magic" inside? lol
    Any ideas or helpful hints??? Maybe an addition to this video for that particular problem/issue;)

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't make any short Smartcords like that. I'm not sure where you'd put the mute button and alert LED if you went that route. You can get a traditional Smartcord www.vortexradar.com/2016/02/radar-detector-hardwire-cable-options/ and then do a traditional hardwire install instead. www.vortexradar.com/2016/07/how-to-hardwire-a-radar-detector/

    • @teamgmotorsports
      @teamgmotorsports 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vortex Radar guess I'll just have to hide the wiring. I was hoping to avoid that and use a hybrid of the wiring you did in this video and a smart cord. I have an 08 Tahoe, so i have room to mount the controller pretty much anywhere. I was just really wanting to tap the power nice and easy like in this video. It's not rocket science, as I used to be a mechanic and wired many a race cars, but I like buying easy to use kit for things these days. Guess I'll have to figure it out on my own or go the more traditional route and run the extra wiring to the fuse panel...

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +teamgmotorsports ah okay cool, this should be right up your alley then. :) Where would you want the remote controller? Somewhere near your seat or dash I'd imagine? If so, the standard smart cord would make the most sense, right? You'd need a longer cord to run up to the detector and since you're gonna be running cables around anyways, there wouldn't be much benefit to tapping into the RVM instead of the fuse box. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding?

    Are the ones with a fuse built in necessary? I was using invisicord with no fuse with my v1 but just ordered and r3 and am worried about the possibility of damaging it. If I had no issues with my car/mirror /v1, would the r3 be fine with this same cord?

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fuse is generally there for safety. Fortunately there's typically another fuse specifically for the RVM so if anything goes wrong, that will blow and save everything. If you had one for your V1, the same one will work fine with the R3.

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been experimenting with it and I'm not convinced it's a good idea. I've actually just taken the rear RD down. Better to stick to a detector like the V1 or Max360 that's designed to have arrows. :)

      Thanks for the ultra fast response. I have an Escort MAX Series 1 which I I'm pleased with up front with the Escort Bluetooth accessory for connection to my iPhone. Its hardwired into my car along with my Rexing S500 Dual camera. I'm very experienced in installs so its very well done with hidden power switches and remote LED's to indicate power and quick shut down if necessary. It looks close to a factory accessory with the Bluetooth module installed into my dash flush mounted. My issue is I live in Maryland where anything goes, but I travel to DC and Virginia for work several times a week. As you're aware its illegal to even have a unit in those locations. It's getting very annoying to remove the detector and tuck it away. Is there a remote detector that you'd recommend that is in the $300 range. I don't want to spent $2,000+ for a super high end unit. I actually don't drive that much but when I do I want some protection just for DC and Virginia. All other times I have the Escort Max mounted and it works great. Any suggestion would be most appreciated. Thanks and BTW great videos. Super high quality and very informative.

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So remote detectors are always more expensive than windshield mounts. Unfortunately there's nothing good in that price range. The closest thing you'll find is an add-on antenna that plugs into your ALP. You can get a new Net Radar for $500 bit.ly/1TW9VlH plus the Bluetooth module for GPS lockouts like the Max has for another $100. bit.ly/1P8Izoe This is only helpful if you already have an ALP installed.

    I'm trying to figure out if the MTX series will work with the Cobra ESD7570? Anyone know this for sure? On the Blendmount website it is not a supported device, but the DC plug looks to be the same as the models they do have listed on their site.

    • @VortexRadar

      It doesn't look like it's supported, you're right. Makes sense though because those are pretty poor radar detectors, I'm sorry to say. If you're running the ESD7570, you may seriously want to look into running something more capable.

If it’s no bother to you, could you list the process on how you installed it? I also heard something weird and that’s that they use green/purple wires for power in the Chevy cars of this time. Could be untrue just thought I’d ask as you’ve had success with this. Thanks again for your support man, really appreciate it!

    Hey I am thinking about using the mirror tap for my escort 9500ix. The only issue I have is how do I mute the beeping since it is connected to the mirror and not the controller with the mute switch. Do you have any advice for this issue or do you mute it on the radar itself?

    • @VortexRadar

      Either mute the detector itself or use a hardwire cable with a remote mute cable. The mirror tap won’t let you do that through the cable.
