I did this, this is a helpful video. Some notes on my efforts: -It takes remarkable force to squeeze and remove that plastic housing around the rear mirror. I literally pulled the entire mirror off the window mount much easier (several times) than I could remove that plastic housing. If you happen to pull the mirror off, I'd suggest then unclipping the harness and taking a good look at things. To re-mount the mirror you have to apply it back to the circular grip on the windshield, have it rotated about 20 degrees counter-clockwise of normal position, then with force apply it and rotate clockwise. Careful, I've heard it's possible to break a window with too much force but don't know about this car. -Even when I removed my entire mirror (minimal force required) it took a lot of force to remove the housing! after removing it once or twice a tab or two broke (there are 2 in the video but 2 more internal ones and then it was easier, haha. even with broken tabs it sits well. --It's very easy to scratch the plastic on the window surround when replacing the plastic housing. It's not a very visible area though --once you get the housing off, the harness is difficult to remove. note the diagram in 3:02 of the video, there is a clip to squeeze to remove it. I have no idea how the video guy removes it with one hand! Squeeze the top and wiggle. --There is a kit on amazon of mirror taps, comes with 3 different types. The pins/needle shape were way to small, not enough friction to reliably conduct electricity. I used the mid-side on a different install and had the larger plugs left, they wouldn't fit. I ground it to be flat prongs but skinny and crammed it in with a LOT of force, then tested that it conducted, then re-assembled everything. --I've installed a lot of alarms, stereos, dashcams, radar detectors. This one was a bit annoying. It may still be better than running across the a-pillar from the fusebox, but I was close to giving up and doing it this way instead!
I have a 2014 RS5 Convertible. Husband bought me Uniden R7 for Christmas. I bought the mount and tap (sent blendmount pics of my rear view mirror etc). Then had it installed by a local professional. Radar detector works exactly like video turn on car, lots of beeps cycling thru bands. Turns off when car turns off. Week later, the convertible top won't go down. It goes down halfway, then I can close it. This is first time after radar install i tried putting top down because it's been 90 degrees and now it's low 80s. It won't go all the way down. I guess I'm off to the Audi dealer on Monday. Is this coincidence or related to the radar detector install? Any ideas?
I'm in the UK, and want to get a good radar detector. I understand I need to get a product with UK-specific settings, and I always thought it would be a Valentine. Never heard of Uniden. How do they/others compare?
