The round connector at the end of the red add-a-circuit fuse wire is actually a female bullet type connector. It is designed to accept a male connector not to have a wire crimped in it. The flat connector is a fully insulated .250" male spade connector. Vampire taps aren't my first choice but may be ok when used in interior locations. They corrode and fail when exposed to water or salt water like during winters here in the NE. Many people make the mistake of using them for trailer light connections.
Wow that was awesome, I have been watching you're videos for years primarily because I have had a v1 since 2002. Your the only one I look at for v1 videos. Love your stuff
Great video for those that can't do a mirror tap. Obviously installing the power directly to a powered mirror is best (easier?) , if you have that option available. In this case, doesn't look like the mirror has power. I also prefer a mirror mounted radar detector, as it allows you to still use the sun visors. #bledmount!
I appreciate the great content you make typically but cant get passed some of the wiring mistakes and terminology. The "crimp" that looks like a typical Bullet connector on the fuse tap, you do not crimp your wire directly into it, that's a very insecure connection which could lead to issues. Your amp rating is based off the front of the usb charger which may output 6 amps at 5v but is draws less than half that at 12-14 volts. The fuse tap would, if installed backwards have current flowing through the bottom fuse first , they share power in pin then have separate fuses and outlets so they can both be protected at different amp ratings, but if backwards the bottom fuse would blow and shut off both circuits, especially if the fuse wasn't sized to handle both. You called a Male spade connector a vampire tap, the vampire tap was the piece that clipped onto the wire, terribly convenient but often times is used on wrong size wire leading to bad connection or a broken wire. You have crimpers, you should have an assortment of spade/bullet crimps and have crimped on a male end to the multiple wires and inserted it into the fuse tap. would have been much cleaner, simpler, and more durable. I'm not bashing, I simply think you should educate yourself a little more, you would improve greatly buy having some of the proper parts and electrical knowledge.
Thanks for the tips. Yeah wiring is definitely not my forte by any means and I'm definitely interested in learning more. :) Thanks for your suggestions and for correcting my terminology!
I have dash cams, rearview dash cam, radar detector and dedicated power pack for dash cams, and I'd like to hardwire all these items. How many fuses can I tap (pull) from the fuse box? Also, does it affect the operation of the car electronic components? Thank you. Great content. Thank you for your contribution.
I’m sorry this is a dumb question but can I use ATC fuses instead of ATO. My fuse box has ATOs and I don’t see add on circuits for ATOs so I wanted to know if it would work? Great videos btw very helpful!
Tried Hardwiring to my Audi A6 worked great except the hardwire apparently interferes with the wireless wheel positioning system on the Audi. When I asked the dealer they basically said the fact that their was an unexpected electric field in the fuse box it threw the system off. Major waning lights when off in the car. Anyone else ever had this?
Great information but I don’t like those dam vampire connectors maybe I’m old school but I like to solder wires together and use that heat shrink tube stuff to cover the connection . If I can do it ....
Another item of note for which way the fuse taps go for the U1000 is that parking mode won't work correctly if you don't have them in the fuse block as you noted. Don't ask me how I know. :D
A lot of bad info (remember, most cars come with fuse pullers . Nbd) but bigger is that power inserted backwards, won't skip the fuse but will go through both fuses potentially blowing the factory one at a bad time later. A viewer testing by leaving fuses out may think it's inserted correctly. But at least it shows pulling panels off which your newer one didn't
Yeah no problem I appreciate your videos I was looking for a new radar detector I still have the Valentine one GEN one other than it’s false alerts it’s still quite impressive. I went to find your newest video on the red line 360 and you mentioned a few things about it the rear radar not being as great and the arrows not switching properly the beeping not ramping up properly I don’t know if that’s because your video is a little older but all that seems to be working properly. But I did wanna ask I noticed the K band When it comes to speed signs in the road they are k band it doesn’t even detect them until I am at them them where my v1g1 detects them halfway down the street I thought that was strange. KA band works great. Was wondering if you’ve noticed thatwith KBand
I am not an electrician, however I was a bit confused about the section on fuse taps. You said that "if you plug it in 180 degrees backwards you are not going to be getting any fuse protection" and "power is only going to flow through one of the sides here so you are not going to get any protection against fires or anything". I believe many people including myself would stay miles away from the fuse box, if fires were easily caused by flipping fuse tap 180 degrees. However, as far as I can see, flipping a fuse should not cause any issue whatsoever. By looking at wiring inside the tap, one can conclude that using a fuse tap in wrong direction would not do anything to the existing circuit, since fuse is symmetrical; and the only outcome would be - no power in the new circuit. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Edit: In case both fuses present, if add-a-circuit is installed incorrectly, the power will be delivered through original fuse, which may eventually blow it (no big deal, just a blown fuse, 2 circuits out and an indicator that tap is wrong). In case only new circuit fuse is present, there just won't be any power in the new circuit, which should not do any harm at all.
Ok, around 5:30 in the video it mentions that Radar and Charger will use the same fuse as the Accessory Fuse for Dashcam. So there will be two Vampire taps on that Dashcam wire. :)
@@VortexRadar Thank you for the reply. I bought a Bluetooth transmitter and a pair of wireless earbuds , Works great ! Because of your channel I bought the Uniden R1 and it saved my ass so many times. Thank you and keep up the good work. Have a blessed day Joe.
@@VortexRadar If you're looking to replace/upgrade, the Fluke 101 is a nice relatively cheap one. I've had my Fluke 88 for years, and just bought this little brother for my more household (as opposed to garage) duty
@@VortexRadar it's great. I don't really use all it can do though. Mostly DC voltage and continuity, but it's nice to have the other stuff. It's a bigger more rugged unit.
Hi, I was wondering if you would recommend the escort max 360 ( not the c / redline) over the Uniden R3. My budget is like $300 and I have the opportunity to buy used 360 max or new uniden r3. I drive city/ urban road ...little highway. Love the directional arrows.. but is the older model worth it? Thanks
So was I. The thickness of the wire depends on current draw requirements. For RDs and dashcams they usually run relatively thin wires. I don’t know the exact gauges off the top of my head, but it should be pretty straightforward to google.
If I have an existing fuse of 10amp and I add another fuse for the top row so the 10 on the bottom and new one on top does it have to be bigger the same as the 10amp on the bottom
In general the best practice is to keep the existing fuse for the existing equipment in the car and then for the new gear, you install a fuse that's rated for just a bit higher than the max load of all the equipment combined. Think of the two fuses are two independent fuses, even though they both plug into the same add-a-circuit cable.
If I put this in my mom's car she would be completely lost and would possibly be more of a distraction to her. I think alote of this stuff is more for our generation and newer.

Is there any way to clean up the cables for the dashcam a bit more?
Maybe don’t use the radar module?
I went out to the car to go look. If you tuck the radar module wires behind the RVM, that only leaves two cables out the top: power and rear dashcam.
