Fly Tying: A Quick & Easy Streamer the Micro Deceiver (Lafkas edition)

  • The deceiver has been a staple in everyone's fly box since Lefty Kreh introduced the streamer in the 1950's. The reason why is simple, it catches fish. When I saw that Alex Lafkas had created a shanked, single hook variation, I just had to adopt it to the small rivers where I fish for trout and smallmouth. I am so glad I did! The rear shanks movement is incredible thanks to the commotion created by the brush and deer hair up front! Overall it moves like crazy and looks incredibly seductive in the water. Another cool thing about this pattern, because it is so light, you can fish it alone or in tandem with another streamer. Oh and I almost forgot to share, the trout and bass just can't resist this snack sized treat!
In this video, I’ll walk you though step-by-step how to tie the micro version of this amazing fly. I have to say, I was skeptical at how this fly would perform in the smaller size but I am absolutely blown away by it's action! I haven't tried but I could easily see this tied on a saltwater hook imitating a small shrimp. Oh yeah, so good! :)

I really like that. Regarding pushing water to wiggle that tell, I bet you could skip the brush in the head and just do a bucktail-back dubbing loop to do a little baby bulkhead. A good way to get that push. I may have to give it a shot.

I agree! You’d have the same effect! Brush just saves some time!

Great fly and awesome channel! Was wondering if you have a fly test tank and if you didn’t mind showing your creations swimming? Not many tiers do this and it would be a cool thing to see! Thanks again!

Bruce thank you! I don’t have a swim tank but have done underwater videos on some of my flies (Freshwater Flounder, Marabou Laser Legal, etc. ) I’m not a fan of those swim tanks as they really restrict the side to side movements. For example the Shad Shank Redemption will almost do a 360 when you fish it… the tank would never show that. I agree underwater shots are awesome and will make sure to incorporate more in the videos. Now I just have to wait for Spring. 😀

@@TroutTornado indeed, can’t wait for spring! Trout fishing here in New Hampshire is a lot of fun! Yea, those tanks are way to expensive! Thanks again, great channel!
