Fly Tying: A micro articulated streamer the Itsy Bitsy!

  • All sportfish across the globe begin their lives small and vulnerable and that's what I had in mind as I tied the Itsy Bitsy baitfish. Just think about it, all of our favorite fly fishing targets trout, bass, stripers, bluefish, walleye, crappie, carp... all start small. But just being small doesn't scream EAT ME but add in the micro shank for the tail, the pronounced lateral line, realistic contrasting colors and those big ole eyes...and voila you have a fly that screams EAT ME!
    In the video, I’ll walk you though step-by-step how to tie the fly including material prep and how to properly articulate.
    I plan on fishing this for trout and smallmouth in three ways... first on a floating line, long leader, two flies in tandem (see my other video two flies are better than one). Almost dead drifting, only giving the slightest movements, through prime lies where I know big fish are feeding on nymphs and invertebrates. Second on a sink tip, in deeper water as my top dropper with a weighted streamer (copper top, marabou laser legal, supercell, etc.). Lastly on a mono rig, as my top dropper with a heavily weighted jig on the bottom. I could go on...
    Let me know if you have any questions and I hope this helps you out.

    Absolutely brilliant. I use a 5wt and floating line to fish smaller streamers to trout. This looks like a great trailing fly off the anchor fly or even above.

      Thank you! You will have fun fishing it! The slower and smaller the movement, the better!

    Great pattern. Subscribed not too long ago when I stumbled across your channel and started watching your older content. Was happy when you previewed this video the other day because it's a perfect pattern for warm water fishing here in Texas.
    Thank you, and keep up the great work.

    Love the body technique of creating a flat bluegill like profile, without having to chop off tons of material from the sides to accomplish that effect as one would do in wrapping the body 360 degree style.

      Saves materials and gives you the ability to blend materials to change colors and profiles!

    Awesome fly! Going to be tying up a few of these in the very near future. Wonder what your thoughts are on adding a little weight near the bend of the hook to allow the fly to keel correctly or if you found that it typically does it on its own without any added weight. Thanks, again! New subscriber here.

      The fly does have a tendency to kick off to the side unless you fish it incredibly slow. Throwing a little weight on the bottom of the hook will keel it perfectly! You can also just say the heck with keeling it and put a little micro shot above and fish it more like a wounded minnow. Fish it as a top dropper with two flies (see my video 2 are better than one) or another idea if you're Euro fisherman is to put this as a middle fly, off a tag, and put a jig fly down below. That will also keel it and make it twitch and move incredibly! Thanks for subscribing BTW!

    So you say you would fish it on a mono rig. What would your mono rig set up be for this?

    • @TroutTornado
      @TroutTornado  ปีที่แล้ว

      Any euro leader, 2-3 flies, anchor fly would be a jig and the Itsy fishes best in the #2 spot! Work it like a wounded minnow!
