This sort of reminded me of how I started playing Final Fantasy 12 and its combat immediately reminded me of the combat from Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, one of my favorite games.
I think it'd be amazing to be a fly on the wall during the design of a Final Fantasy game. For as legendary as they are, I'm curious what direct inspirations they might've taken for certain parts of their games, only for players to discover that later on... Or maybe it was all just a strange happy accident!

It's really fun to trace the DNA thread between different games and see the commonalities in game design, story elements, or aesthetics. And the more games you play, you start to see those throughlines and references more and more clearly.

As someone who grew up with final fantasy, it's always great to hear people getting into them

It's such a good feeling seeing the games you love get appreciated. EarthBound was a game I felt like no one knew when I was younger, and now it's seen as this legendary game. You love to see it. It validates your tastes in games too, haha.

Whenever I hear somebody playing either FF7 or FF9 (or both in your case) for the first time, I get really excited and then a little bit nervous because I so badly hope for them to be seen for their strengths over their faults. I'd give an arm and a leg to spend more time in those settings with those characters (one of the many reasons 7-Remake was so great. Maybe someday we'll get a 9-Remake).
Either way, I'd love to see an update video if you ever get around to completing 'em.

This comment made my day because this an old video of mine and quite possibly my least popular one, but I think about this FF experience and the making of this video all the time.
Truth be told, I haven't finished FF9 quite yet, I've gotten too swept up in making videos for this channel as well as my own ADHD tendencies to jump around from game to game. I have basically gotten "first impressions" now of FF7, FF9, FF10, and FF13. BUT the one I've spent the most time in, and the one I want to come back to the most, is FF9. I really want to play it, beat it, and experience it. And then probably immediately go watch the video Tarks Gauntlet made on this game recently so I can resonate with everyone gushing about the game, haha.

I basically ignored the Dragon Quest franchise until I picked up the remakes of 1-3 on Switch and enjoyed the first two (haven't played 3 yet). RIP Akira Toriyama.

RIP Akira 🙏 I actually played the Gameboy Color versions of Dragon Quest I & II pretty recently, really fantastic versions.

This is Dragon Quest for me, I've got the most recent game in my backlog & a copy of Dragon Quest 5 as well. Just a matter of making the time to get around to it.
The series I recently got into & am working my way through is Yazkua/Like A Dragon. I've played the JRPG entries & the spin off "Man who Erased his name" & their fantastic, especially since I always wrote them off as Shenmue spiritual successors & I didn't enjoy Shenmue when I was younger. I should probably try it again as an adult.

I have a lot to say to this, lol. I got into Dragon Quest through one of its spin-offs, Dragon Quest Builders 2. I'm not a big Minecraft fan, but I thought that a game with Minecraft's gameplay AND a story seemed intriguing. I'm glad I made that decision because I loved that game! After that I played Dragon Quest XI and was sold. I have since gone back and played the original Dragon Quest (highly recommend the GameBoy Color version) and I'm working through DQII, and I've played Dragon Quest Swords. Another Yakuza spin-off, Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise, got me into Yakuza as well. You might like Shenmue better as an adult now; it's personally in my top 10 of all time, but I didn't play it for the first time until a year and half ago or so.
