Is The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport A True Bronco? Let’s Go Off-Road!

  • The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport has the tough rugged look people want these days. But can it do tough rugged Bronco things? Since the Sport is based on the same architecture as the Escape, some might think it’s a poser or soft-roader. So Tom Voelk decided to take a First Edition model (which is pretty much the same as a loaded Badlands) to the trails to see what it’s got. But since it will spend most of its days on pavement, he concentrates on that too. Plus, Easter Eggs!

We were the first to do a mild overland build and cross country overland our Badlands early in 2021, and BOY let me tell you, we've had it over every terrain from trails to rivers to ice, and I'm still ALL about it. MUCH better than the Compass Trail Hawk, we rented a trail hawk to drive from Ohio to Cali and bought our badlands for the drive back, NO REGRETS.
    BUT
Fuel economy, we've been getting high 20s all days and mid 20s with our gear up top.

We have one in Lethbridge AB. Love it, has all the opinions that we wanted and more. We bought the Big Bend with 1.5 l motor and so far after 8000kms find it great. All the power to travel in the windy prairie’s. Over all good product. The head lights stay on a long time after you turn off the motor and the off-on stop & start feature does not always work. Which we will look into. There is a recall on the front breaks and no plans on the upgrade yet. Over all I would recommend it.

Very nice video Tom. You obviously had a lot of fun. I’ve already seen a number of these in the Gorge in the last two months. After the can is done, bring the RPM to 4000 for about a minute, and shut the truck off and let it hot soak, after it sits for about an hour start it up and go hammer on it for a few minutes. I think it's a hit, I had a 2011 Mini Cooper (fun car but screw that maintenance) and didn't consider a new car at all until I saw a Bronco Sport on the freeway. I was looking at Rav 4s/Subaru/etc but always loved older small SUVs like Nissan Xterras/older Escape/etc and the Bronco Sport ticked my boxes and imo there's really nothing out there like it for the price point so I can't get a used one, so I traded my Mini Cooper in and got myself a Bronco Sport in black.

Exactly how i use it. I have the badlands orange cyber like in the video. Bought it in july 2021 and very happy with it. I don’t drive much as i have only 12700 km but i have a trip of 3500km with 1700km in two days. So i can speak on the quality of the ride, the seat are very comfortable and very nice, the car drive well on highways on country road and off road. It can tow my 4x6 enclosed trailer very easily. You don’t feel the trailer at all and you can still accelerate like crazy with the trailer full. The only thing that would have made it perfect would be to be flat towable. Ford didn’t invest into it. It would have been the perfect vehicle for rv owners behind their RV as it is short and not heavy 3800 lbs. all super c tow at least 10000 pounds. The quality of interior is very good, the only thing to improve would be to put more solid plastic on the left door arm support. All other plastic are high quality and very dust and mud resistamt. Ford could improve simply the plastic of the door of the handle but even that it is ok. Everything r’se is very good. Leather, dashboard, wheel, infotainment, 400w inverter, 12 v plugs everywhere, sunroof, paint quality, outside plastic for off road. In conclusion the car is highly rated to my opinion. I love it. And it is nice. I receive a lot of compliments from people on the road and at campgrounds. Adult and kid like the color and said it is a nice truck. It look bigs and feel big inside with the safari roof. I have put a yakima load warrior roofrack. And i installed a 7 pins with brake controller for towing.

Not planning on doing any off roadin in my base model sport aka the baby Bronco. However it will come in handy on my 45 minute drive to work when snowing. The whopping 180hp leaves much to be desired but sport mode makes up for it, passing folks on my highway drive to and from work is fun, she feels peppy. I've already filled the boot with my normal compliment of emergency tools, granted a brand spanking new vehicle shouldn't need a host of wrenches and a 3 ton jack anytime soon but you never know. The driver side door pocket fits a 7 inch glass breaker hammer quite nicely as well. 24 miles per gallon on the highway with sport mode makes me consider adding a few gas cans to that "safari" roof rack though 😁

@@chocolatewheelchair Really like it and would definitely buy another, but would buy one with all the extras that were left off the 1st edition. Got to take it out in some hilly deep snow the other day and it did great. It only has 1700 miles on it with out any issues so far.

Just the idea of that turbo charged 3cyl seems nuts. Be interesting to see if they all wear out in 5 years. Wonder what a 3cyl with aftermarket exhaust sounds like. 😂
Level it, or even lift it a couple inches with slightly bigger tires and it’ll look awesome!

Interesting sound, indeed. Stupid startup graphics, which takes ages, usual for Ford. VW starts up its UI right when you open the door, so by the time you start the engine, the UI is fully operative and the radio works right away. The square TV looks like a CRT straight from 1938, does it tilt?

From Seattle, head east toward Index on 2, take a left on Reiter Road. Go 4-5 miles and you'll see the dirt road entrance on your left. You'll also pass by a small park on your right on the way, which is what Ryan originally pointed us toward.
