I Joined a BILLION Muslims in FASTING For a Day

  • More than 1 billion Muslims fast during Ramadan every year. As a non-Muslim traveler, I have always been curious about what it must be like to abstain from eating food and drinking water from sunrise to sunset for 30 days.
    I've never fasted before in my life so I figured being in quarantine would be the best time to try it out! I also wanted to take to opportunity to learn more about the Islamic religion & culture and make this video in hopes of sharing some positive information about Ramadan to my mostly non-Muslim audience. After fasting just for one day during Ramadan 2020, I have nothing but respect for the Muslims who have fasted for 30 days every single year since they were young.
    I STRUGGLED during this fast! It was difficult to focus on work and being around the food in our house was definitely a test of my self control. The most noticeable physical reaction I had was my caffeine withdrawal that caused me to have a terrible headache all day.
    I was so happy to be breaking my fast with my roommate Ammar who is from Egypt and has been fasting throughout Ramadan. We sat together to chat about his experiences during Ramadan which was amazing to get the perspective of a Muslim who has been fasting since he was 11 years old.
    Once Ammar returned home with our dates and dinner, we said a prayer and reflected on my Ramadan experience. From just this short experience, I’ve learned that Ramadan is about so much more than fasting
    It’s about becoming aware of your negative habits and practicing self control. It’s a time dedicated towards prayer, reflection and meditation. It teaches you to be grateful for all the blessings in your life and to be more understanding towards people less fortunate than you.
    It’s also about community. It’s taking the time away from your normal routine to disconnect and come together to share meals and appreciate each other’s presence in our lives.
    I’m feeling very grateful for the opportunity to learn more about Islamic culture and to those of you who are currently fasting, Ramadan Mubarak!

    I’m Jewish and we fast once a year on Yom Kippur for 25 hours from sundown to sundown the next day. It’s sometimes difficult-I usually get miserable in the late afternoon-but I can’t even imagine fasting for 30 days straight. I have so much respect for Muslims who do this, and especially ones who are working and able to keep up their normal lives without being able to eat.

      Thank you Adam for showing respect. Being a muslim who is used to fast since it became obligatory i.e. 13-14 years age, I must tell you that we become used-to in a few years. First 6 to 8 years you feel it but once you become used to 15-18 years of fasting, you become so used to it that you dont feel problem in keeping it. Normally we do sehri and iftari (meals) so we dont feel that hunger, but its more the thirst which we feel. Also, more than hunger, its the habitual eating and munching cravings that creates some issues otherwise it becomes pretty easy with time.

    • @JawadRaana
      @JawadRaana 4 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      You get use to it after 3-4 days.
      I usually start preparing for it about 20-25 earlier than the ramzan start.
      Eat less day by day and increase the time between 2 meals.
      It helps.

    yes, fasting is about self control and fighting temptations. fasting physically (by not eating and drinking) is quite easy feat for most Muslims who are already familiar. but the most difficult is self restraining from mental and emotional temptations such as cursing, lying, slandering, cheating, bad thoughts etc. anyhow, good job and may God guide you to the ultimate truth in this life. salam from Malaysia.

You explained Ramadan in the most accurate and beautiful way. Couldn’t have done it better. And yes, Ramadan is definitely about conditioning our will power and practicing self-control, as well as taking this time to build healthy habits and reflect on our lives. It teaches us to slow down, something this quarantine has helped as well.

    The Ramadan fast is not just abstaining from food and liquids from dusk to sunset. It's also about obtaining a certain mindset where you avoid arguments, disputes, keeping your eyes and tongue in check, doing extra prayers and dhikr, etc etc etc.

      You also cannot 'meditate', only offer more prayers as you say. You may choose to meditate as an individual choice out of bounds but as you saw with her, most likely you're going to feel uncomfortable. Scientifically, the best pose for the body in this state (that relaxes the muscles and state of mind) is the kneeling or slouching pose.

    This video has made me so proud to be Muslim. I would never change the decision I made just over a year ago to accept Islam. This is my second Ramadan as a Mexican-American Muslim revert. I am surrounded by my family constantly eating delicious food around me but the temptation is not there. Your body gets used to it the more you do it and the intention for the fast (doing it for the sake of Allah) makes it easier as well. It is routine for me now to not have any food or water until a little past 7pm. I am always nervous at the start of Ramadan but always sad when it ends. Thank you for giving this a try!

      Not eating for so long in the morning and suddenly gorging on food in the evening doesn't lead to any problem?I mean gastric attacks or acidity?cause doctors advise against such eating habits...

    • @annymp
      @annymp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@debmalyachatterjee22 I see we've got an uneducated person here, let me explain.
      First of all people don't do it only for religious reasons, fasting has been around for many centuries as it has many positive effects on your body and gives you an understanding to how poor people feel when they don't have anything to eat, you'll also appreciate food more.
      Scientists have proven that fasting is associated with a lot of health benefits, including weight loss, as well as improved blood sugar control, heart health, brain function and cancer prevention.
      Ghrelin is the so-called hunger hormone, it binds to growth hormone (GH) receptor, which strongly stimulates GH. So, eating, by itself does not makes you gain lean tissue (like muscle and bone), despite what all the makers of supplements claim. Rather, hunger may be a strong growth stimulus.
      Nothing turns off Growth Hormone like eating and you need GH to grow functional tissue. Of course, food provides the nutrients needed to grow, so in fact, you need both feeding and fasting cycles to properly grow. Not all feeding, and not all fasting. Life lies in the balance of the two. The cycle of life is feast and fast. The prophet Muhammed (pbuh) recommended us 1500 years ago that we should fast on mondays and thursdays apart from ramadan as to have a healthy balance between eating and fasting. He also taught us not to overeat when breaking the fast as it's detrimental to your health. He advised us to divide our meal into 3 parts: 1/3 for food, 1/3 for water and 1/3 for air.
      But in today’s world, many people would have you believe that fasting is bad for your health, and that you should eat all the time.
      The biggest worry about fasting is dealing with hunger. People assume that the hunger will get worse and worse until you cannot help yourself and start an IV donut slurry in your garage.
      Ghrelin, the hunger hormone, increases appetite and weight gain. It also antagonizes the effect of Leptin. Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells which turns off appetite and makes us stop eating.
      Ghrelin turns on appetite. So, if you want to lose weight on a long term basis, you need to tune down ghrelin. If you don’t eat (fast), don’t you get hungrier and hungrier, ghrelin goes up and up and you’ll just gain weight?
      That's wrong. Eating all the time sounds like it will turn off hunger and ghrelin. But that’s far too simplistic. Surprisingly, the answer to turning down ghrelin (and hunger) is the opposite - fasting. funny how random people knew this 1500 years ago before science was even advanced.
      There has been a study where patients undertook a 33 hour fast, and ghrelin was measured every 20 minutes.
      There are several things to notice. First, ghrelin levels are lowest at approximately 8:00 - 9:00 in the morning. Circadian rhythm studies consistently find that hunger is lowest first thing in the morning, also generally the longest period of the day where you have not eaten. This reinforces the fact that hunger is not simply a function of ‘not having eaten in a while’. At 9:00, you have not eaten for about 14 hours, yet you are the least hungry. Eating, remember, does not necessarily make you less hungry. This makes your statement of "ignoring your natural instincts and starving yourself just for a religion" incorrect.
      There are 3 distinct peaks corresponding to lunch, dinner and the next day’s breakfast. BUT IT DOES NOT CONTINUALLY INCREASE. After the initial wave of hunger, it recedes, even if you don’t eat. Ghrelin shows a spontaneous decrease after approximately 2 h without food consumption.
      Over the entire day of fasting, ghrelin stays stable! In other words, eating nothing over 33 hours made you no more or less hungry than when you started! That's why the girl in this video didn't feel that that hungry at the end of the day and felt even better afterwards.
      Whether you ate or did not eat, your hunger level stayed the same.
      Eating more sometimes makes you more hungry, not less. In the same vein, eating less can actually make you less hungry. That’s terrific, because if you are less hungry, you will eat less, and are more likely to lose weight.
      Over 3 days of fasting, ghrelin gradually DECREASED. This means that patients were far LESS hungry despite not having eaten for the past 3 days. Everybody expects to be ravenously hungry after fasting multiple days, but actually find that their hunger completely disappears. They always say ‘I can’t eat much anymore. I get full so fast. I think my stomach shrank’. That’s PERFECT, because if you are eating less but getting more full, you are going to be more likely to keep the weight off.
      Of course, there's so much more to fasting but I'll leave at this note.

      Hope you educate me on this...

    • @annymp
      @annymp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@debmalyachatterjee22 iftar meals should be well balanced and contain items from each food group, such as vegetables, cereals, meat, dairy products and fruit. The fast should be broken with a balanced diet ensuring that the essential nutritional needs of your body are met. These include sodium and potassium which are lost due to sweating, especially during summer. High-sugar foods as sweets and chocolates should be avoided as they contain very little nutritional value and are high in calories. They contribute to weight gain and can lead to health issues. Our prophet (pbuh) always broke his fast with dates and water. Dates are nutrient powerhouses that are a good source of potassium. It helps you hydrate quickly and gives you instant energy to make you feel rejuvenated after the long-hours of fasting.

      Thomas Samuel they can eat food just specific food, no fat food or just vegetarian food. But if I can drink it gets much easier. Cause the hunger level drops down when u are not getting food, I know is sounds weird, but it is to do with your brain. We are wired in the way that we have to eat at specific times during the day. For example somewhere from 11 to 12 we eat, and right before that we get hungry as well. While doing the fast ur brain learns that it will not get food until sunset and it revires your hunger cycle(u do get hungry here and there though) just not at those specific times anymore and not the same level as non fasting days. I think I get more hungry when I’m not fasting
