My Saudi Arabian Adventure! (Not What I Expected)

  • This was Saudi Arabia's first unsegregated concert performed by international artists!! Drifting an SUV around in the middle of the desert as a woman in Saudi Arabia and going to this concert, dancing with all the locals and actually seeing the crown prince of Saudi Arabia in person was an extremely unique experience to have in this conservative country.
I visited Saudi Arabia during the first time they opened up an e-visa for the Formula E races in 2018. My initial impression was that it felt extremely safe in Riyadh and there were lots of foreign fast foods. Life didn’t really start until the sun set and the temp cooled down, then it was the malls that seemed to be where everyone would hangout. It was required to wear an abaya which is a full body length robe like dress but not required to cover your hair, occasionally in places like Saudi Arabia I don’t mind wearing a hijab to both respect the culture and to also not draw any unnecessary attention to myself.
Getting to see One Republic live was surreal for me because I’ve been listening to their music since I was in Middle School but my favorite part of the concert was that David Guetta said he spend two weeks creating an all Arabic set and when he was playing it, I’ve never heard an audience sing alone more loudly. It felt like their voices made the ground shake!!

Thank you to Jason for helping me capture this trip! Check out his amazing photography here: / mnml.me

It’s remarkable how in western culture alcohol is used to have ‘fun’ at concerts and in a country where it’s banned it’s amazing to see that people can still have a powerful hype at concerts without it. It’s also remarkable how music is something that brings us together and dose not divide us .

Great video but some updates are required,
-Gender segregations have been almost entirely removed as restaurants and other places are no longer required by law to segregate.
-Women are no longer required to wear abayas.
-As for the rumors about traveling with a male guardian, these used to be true for traveling to different countries, but traveling within the country was never required. Either way that is no longer the case.

There are so many layers to Saudi Arabia. I am a non-Arab who luckily got to live there all my life. In my childhood, freedom to drive, or enjoy movies in a theatre, or attend a concert never entered my mind. This was because i never felt trapped either way. The Abaya was a barrier of protection and a safety net to us (not that i am advocating that protection against abuse comes through our choice of dressing), and the requirement of a male companion didn’t hinder us from experiencing trips to the local store or neighborhood walks all alone. Crime rate never concerned us. There was enough entertainment at home, which stopped us from feeling trapped. Family life was a plus. Learning so much from their culture, I happen to have turned out great, in my opinion. Yes, every country is flawed, but I felt safe and I loved it. I am a young adult who still doesn’t need a concert or a drink to have the time of my life. Intoxication takes the true thrill away. I am happy for the modernization and tourism opportunities MBS is bringing into his Kingdom, but I liked it before too. I am proud to call Saudi Arabia my home 🇸🇦

When I first heard about you the first thing I wanted to know was whether you wore head scarfs when in predominantly Muslim countries. I was so happy to see that you did. I am not Muslim but I live in a place that it is culturally appropriate to wear a head covering and is considered inappropriate not to. I am glad that you respect the culture.

Thank you so much for truly showing Saudi Arabia as it really is. We have always been judged based on what the media portrays us as, which is mostly bad, but as EVERY other country in the world, we are always evolving and learning as we go. Having people like you who use their platform to teach people not to judge and actually see for themselves is what this world needs. From a proud Saudi woman, thank you and I hope you visit again!

I am really glad that you enjoyed your trip here in Saudi Arabia, there is a lot of beautiful places and cities that you didn’t visit but maybe in the next trip. What I love about Saudi Arabia is that each part has his own cultures, you can find to cities that are close together but has different cultures for example I am from the western part of Saudi Arabia and we have a lot of cultures and a lot of cities also a beautiful places the weather there is always cold and rainy and some part of the year snow comes down.I’m going to recommend some places in the western part of Saudi Arabia if you come next time ( Abha -Al Sawda Mountain) ( Al Bahah - Raghadan Forest Park ) ( Fifa Mountains ) ( Dhee Ayn, Marble Village ) ( rijal almae village ). And for the food you must try these traditional dishes ( earikuh , maesub , mandi ). Nowadays I live in Jeddah which is in the western part it’s a beautiful city and have its own culture and if you come in the next time just hit me up on my Instagram ( r0ew ) and I would love to meet you and take you on a tour, your friend “ waleed “.
