⚠WATCH NEXT: This is Why I Love Malaysia (after just 24 hours)... th-cam.com/video/lv-D0OL-Gwo/w-d-xo.html
You've seen Penang and Taiping...you wouldn't want to see Ipoh. It's almost the same. Try Melaka then Johor Bahru. Johor Bahru is expensive though, the ripple effects from neighboring Singapore. Go for just Nasi Kandar. Others like Yong Tau Foo is sweet, not healthy for you
Hi Ben.. From Ipoh take bus to Cameron Highland, it's very close already to Cameron.
Most of us left Taiping for school, unis n work...nowadays many retire back in Taiping...i am from Taiping..74 yrs old..travelled d world..been to more than 60 countries...worked in
KL...
Wow cool, it feels like a peaceful place to retire
Finally you made it to Taiping... My hometown.. I left Taiping in 1978... Every year I go and pay a visit. Its 150 years of Taiping this year
Lovely town, I’ll have to go back to see more since it was such a short stay
Are there big lizards in Taiping?
@@nomorenews No... not really
@@user-gk9gd8ip9i ok thanks,I thought there are lakes ,so may be monitor lizards are there
Saya lahir d tanah rata Cameron Pahang(1967)hingga berumur 5 tahun, membesar d Beruas Perak ,Berhijrah ke Kuala Lumpur ketika berumur 19 tahun hingga sekarang...57tahun.hope One day kita akan minum pagi together😃👍🇲🇾🤲🤝
Ah cool, are you planning to retire somewhere outside of KL or you want to stay in the city?
Stay in city.😃🤝✌️
GOOD TO SEE BEN ENJOYING KUALA LUMPUR MALAYSIA 🇲🇾 AND WALKING AROUND ❤
It’s a lovely city! 😁😁
Great zoo, Great lake garden, bukit merah orangutan sanctuary, one day is not enough
Unfortunately didn’t get to any of these, I will definitely be stopping in again, thanks for the tips 🙌
The british moved the administration from ipoh to taiping. First railway was from taiping to port weld (kuala sepetang)
You are wrong. Kuala Kangsar was the first capital town of Perak. Taiping was the first British Administration centre (1876) in Perak. Only after 1937 the administration was centre was moved to Ipoh.
Interesting thanks
Taiping as the name says reflect the rebels from Taiping Rebellion way back in the 1800's where China expelled them, taken by the British to run down the wealthy tiin mine lands in the then Malaya simply because the indigenous people of the land refuse to mine their natural resources to the benefits of the colonisers. Not many of the present generations know that simply the history was rewritten by the colonisers. Even local names were changed to colonial names like Port Swettenham, Anson Bay, etc. It's a small town (you don't need to spend much time on Taiping) surrounded by rainforest and of course, the deadstripped abandoned mines. Horray.... you're really exploring Malaysia ❤
Thanks a lot for this info. I ended up spending one night there, great place to stop and explore for a day!
Dear Ben, one day when you're back in NY, just chilling and you're going to be thinking about Deens Maju. The taste and flavour will be stuck with you for the rest of your life😅
Haha I won’t be going back to NY but I’ve already been thinking about deens maju every day since I left. In taiping the Nasi Kandar didn’t really compare. In Ipoh I did really enjoy the Nasi ganja though that was different and delicious!
@@benfisherminNasi Ganja, Ipoh😅. 👍👍👏👏
Hope you can stop at Kuala Kangsar as well. 30 minutes away from Taiping. Located between Taiping and Ipoh. Kuala Kangsar is a Royal Town, Lot of historical and beautiful architecture as it is home for British Resident and Royal Palaces.
Next time around I’ll stop by since I already left the area! 🙏🙏
Hope that you have enjoyed your visit to Taiping, on your way to Ipoh, capital of Perak.
Yes..trains r better than busses...no traffic jams. They hv improved d trains in general...i once took a train to Bangkok n met a foreign family on board travelling all d way fromSingapore to Bangkok...
The trains here are great, such a good way to travel around, even for long distances. I would never do train from Singapore to Bangkok though that would be difficult, it’s too many hours!
AirAsia also has budget hotels in Malaysia and they are clean, affordable, comfortable, safe and quite nice especially in KL.AirAsia's hotels are called TuneHotel.
Thanks I gotta check these out
KFC or McD is once know as a kind of a privilege food. Do good in school, get good test result, you got treated with KFC or McD. It has become a gathering sport. Especially McD they know this, and they market it as a gathering place. And lately the have Mc cafes now, there are place where people do work like its Starbucks or Coffee beans. You sit at the corner, fast wifi, with power outlet, you can order more coffee or food without leaving the table.
I grew up eating McDonald’s and I’ll always like the food there. Even though I have stomach issues now I may I have to make a McD food video in Malaysia to try it out and compare. It makes sense that it’s almost like an exotic or special experience to have western fast food places like this in Malaysia
@@benfishermin try the McD friedchicken.
Typing is my father's hometown just a vintage old town we got durian garden and own river to enjoy for our family, just nice retreat from bustling city. Taiping known as city of firsts. Glad you check it out. Aging city but hope it can back to the former glory.
It was a nice experience for me, especially with the slower pace. It reminds me more of my home town in the suburbs of Pennsylvania than the major cities
The 1st 12 years of my life were spent in Taiping. I went to Saint George primary school and live in Kamunting. The lake garden was my favorite spot and not to forget my puppy love was there too. Sigh... 🥺
This town is so chill. There’s also some nice architecture in Kuala Kangsar.
Congratz on 3k sub ben!
Thanks a lot! 😁💥🎉
The first train in Malaya is in Taiping. From Taiping to Port Maxwell. So there is this anecdote. Where there is this local hero from Parit, Perak. He took the first train. The conductor took his tiket. So he made a return trip and at the end again took his tiket. So our friend bought a tiket and walked all the way from Taiping to Port Maxwell. He told everyone "Teman te tiket dia satu," - I managed to cheat them out of one tiket... 😂😂😂
lol, sounds like me walking in the sun to save some measly train money 😂
if u reach Ipoh.... remember to try - "NASI GANJA" 😄
I just went to Ipoh and that was my first stop. I loved it, really delicious and different than all of the other Nasi kandars I’ve eaten!
When you go to Ipoh, do ask the locals about the caves around Ipoh. I do recommend visiting a few of them. There is history in those caves as well. One of them has a lake within the cave and it's like a whole new world of its own. The Academy Award winning actress Michelle Yeoh also hails from Ipoh. Do spend at least two days in Ipoh to explore the city and its surrounding.
Thanks I need to go back and stay a bit longer next time!
Sorry to hear the Komuter AC is broken..Come On #KTM .. do something. Taiping is a town for retirement.. There are so many first buildings in Taiping and a very large man made lakes.. There is also a Maxwell hill where you can go up there with a jeep. Not sure whether they are still open. There are so many peculiar and strange trees up there..
If you are in Ipoh, try visit the chinese cave temple and mirror lake.
From Ipoh you can take a bus to Cameron Highland, stay one cool day up there and visit the mossy forest and the tea plantation.
Thanks a lot for the recommendations 🙏
the Taiping Lake Gardens is said to be the biggest/largest lake garden in Malaysia.there are also other smaller ones in other states in Malaysia.
Nice I really enjoyed it there
Visit the 1st Museum
Lake Garden
St George Instituition
The New Club
The Land office building
And many interesting places to visit in Taiping..
Thanks for the tips, next time I’m gonna try to stay a bit longer
Hi Ben...u r wise to get out of KL n getting into d country a little...yeah Perak...i am from Taiping..luv Taiping..it is always a little cooler here n always rain...jst luv it...Taiping d lazy wet town...easy going n cool...great lake garden...
Very nice town, I will go back again for sure. I like KL too, but I do need breaks from the city to some more peaceful areas like Taiping
you must go top of hill bukit maxwell to view taiping from above
Ah cool I should’ve checked it out. Next time 😄
Just a suggestion, maybe once in a while you should do live on TH-cam and interact with viewers
Yea you’re right, I will do some live streams at some point!

Perpustakaan = library
Awam = public
Ahh thank you 😁
Hi Ben great Vlogs as always. I wonder whether you should check if there is any decent Camping sites around KL
Thanks I appreciate it! 😁
Ipoh is another interesting stop for u...spent my school life there....yrs ago though... enjoy ur stay in Perak...
Ipoh was nice for me, and the Nasi Ganja was delicious 😁
Now retires in Selangor...in Kuala Selangor...a much quieter town...n m happy here.
That’s great, I’ll have to stop in Selangor at some point, any recommendations are welcome 🙌
If you can, Bukit Merah is a short drive away- visit the Orang Utan island, also a local favourite so you won't find see many other tourists, except locals.
@benfishermin, there is a lot more to Taiping including its history and how it was positioned in Malaya (old name of Malaysia) and its developments. Do hit me up when you decide to come back and will be honored to bring you around and host you. :)
pls try the famous Yong Tau Foo the malay version, situated next to the Taiping Fire Station
If you like to go to another place most western tourists miss, go to Kuala Kangsar. As somebody else mentioned above, it’s Perak’s royal town and only about 30 min from Taiping. It’s between Taiping and Ipoh as well, so you’re not going out of the way.
Thanks I gotta check this out next time because I had already headed to Ipoh unfortunately!
Ben, planning to visit the east coast? Terengganu and Kelantan.
Yes soon will be visiting Terengganu and also sabah/sarawak 🙌 I’ll have to make it to kelantan too, I think it’s harder to get to for me, no airport there right?
Msybe you can also visit Cameron highland, its 2 hour away from Ipoh
I will check it out at some point! 🙌
yeah...at its peak, when tin mines were really busy, taiping was a booming town. thats like early in the century though, before ww2 and it certainly faded since then. kinda similar trend to those coal mining towns in penn, w.virginia.
boom & bust, name of the game.
Ahh yea, I guess tin mining isn’t so hot nowadays
try Ipoh bakery in Taiping.....oldest bakery in town
Thanks, I have too many food allergies with gluten and sugar sadly 😩
when to come kelantan,terangganu
what's the name of the hotel that you stayed at?
Selamat datang ke bandar berhampiran kampung halaman saya🫰
Well, it could be that there aren't many industries or jobs in a place so people have to go elsewhere if they want to support themselves. I love how you mention Penang so much. I can't want to move there for retirement soon.
In my experience I haven't been to central Taiping before, the only place nearby towards the town could be Kuala Sepetang famous for the Prawn Noodles hotspot.
It was worth visiting for 1 day for me. The food fell short a bit compared with Penang but I only got to try 3 food places in total.
@@benfishermin true, each and every region or States has their own specialties.
The identity is embedded in the availability of food resources long time ago and eventually become the State dish. New Orleans is known for Gumbo recipe or Hot wings due to Caribbean or French influence.
Terengganu is known for specific dish for instance Nasi Dagang, although not suitable for your current health awareness it is craven by fish lovers. Coastal States located next to an open sea is known for seafood.
Penang is known for Nasi Kandar and Laksa Penang. Pahang known for Patin Masak Tempoyak, Negeri Sembilan for Masak Lemak Cili Padi and other Minangkabau related delicacies.
These food here are excellent when the people of the said localities fancy their own styles with authentic recipes where others not.
That's why people from other places travel hundreds of miles to sample the originality.
Thank you Ben Fisher for heart warming videos and positive thoughts about Malaysia as a nation.
@@benfishermin I have same food awareness because I have some nephro diabetic problems, limiting tomato and potatoes, carbohydrates which includes rice and wheat, but sometimes why not once or twice a month 😅 couldn't be that bad.
Great room
Ya nice room!
Out of Penang already? You missed a lot.
Taiping? We did your trip path in February and stayed too long in Taiping.😂 Ipoh was nice. Also great food. Enjoy Taiping, nice town with not much going on...
Went to the mall for AYCE Korean Hot Pot for under $10 USD! It's a chain restaurant.
I could’ve stayed longer in Penang for sure. My debit card got canceled and I had a new one sent to KL, so I tried to time it right to get back when it arrived, it sort of dictated the speed of my whole trip. I’ll definitely go back especially to check the beaches and other areas. Taiping I think just one day/night was enough!
Taiping is a very beautiful place, but don't forget your umbrella 😁
Yea nice place! I can’t believe it didn’t rain at all while I was there
Taiping was the wealthiest town in the then Malay Federated States during the golden era of tin mining in Perak.
Oh wow interesting, thanks
I saw you’re making a big turn around the lake garden to go back to your hotel which actually just across the road behind the nasi kandar. By the way i think Bensalem PA is just beautiful and quiet like Taiping. Did you go to bhs?
Ha yea seems I took the loooong way. Yea I went to bhs but only in 9th grade, then I switched to doing online school for the last 3 years. You went to bhs?
Nasi Kandar originally from Penang Ben..
KFC n McDonalds r a treat here...a special nite out...n more xpensive too...its so funny i tot when i came bck from NYC before...there u wont even look at KFC or McDonald...considered thrash food...they were not even allowed to open in d upper east NYC area then...hahahaaaa
Yea it’s funny, we treat those places differently, often they get run down and the workers are hit or miss, not the most efficient or friendly at times. But I do love McD and always will honestly 😁
Keep it up King. You will blow up soon. Your demeanor is different in a good way. HINT: Every time you buy a meal show it with the price. EVERY time.
That's great to hear, and thanks I'll try to remember this!
The lake was formally a tin mining area.
Ben..try mee goreng combat at larut matang mall👍😃🤝🇲🇾✌️
I’m allergic to soy and gluten I can’t eat it 😩
Thats Frasers Hill...now called bukit Bendera...a good walk, jog or brisk walking there...
Maxwell Hill. Frasers hill is some hundreds of KMs away in a different state.
Bkt Larut. Bkt Bendera is in Penang
Oh so true...i got it all wrong..oh dear...😅😅

I’ll be visiting Terengganu and nearby island very soon, I’m excited about this!
@@benfishermin my recommendation.. Perhentian Islands.. and Kapas Islands.. both in Terengganu..
46:23 I agree train is a much better way of travel than bus. There are things you could do in a train that you usually couldn't do in a bus : stretch your legs by walking through the coaches, toilet break... And train is much safer too.
Oh yes the safety part too, the bus drivers tend to be animals on the road! And often delays. Train all the way
@@benfisherminkamu berfikir seperti saya juga, more safety than bus
I am in Terengganu now.. If you going to visit Terengganu. We can meet...
I’ll be visiting Terengganu quite soon, I’d like to visit an island nearby too
There are airports both in Terengganu capital Kuala Terengganu and in Kota Bharu in Kelantan
Taiping! Rain town, its known as the town with the most rainfall
I was surprised it didn’t rain while I was there 😁
Not gonna lie your hand eating game is at par with the locals. It looks so natural. Some tourists appear awkward when they eat using their hand as it is understandable as they are not used to it.
Nice I appreciate it 😁 it feels pretty natural but sometimes I think I suck at it. I swear it’s harder without the rice!
@@benfishermin Some small amount of rice not gonna kill you Ben i believe. Taiping locals here. The Taiping proper is pretty much not developed much to maintain its heritage status. Us yongster always works elsewhere and went back to Taiping during holidays. Taiping are famous for retirees. Old town vibe, laidback and not so hustle and bustle.
Maxim taxi is also pretty good in my experience
Ah thanks I gotta try!
Yeah...u r a rare species walking around in Taiping...no tourist here...tho u r most welcome here...enjoy Ben!!!!!!
Thanks a lot my friend 🙏
wow! 1st for the 1st time. lol
Nice one 😉
I'd take the train to Ipoh from Taiping and to KL from Ipoh too.
Yea I did this, it was an easy travel route!
My Brother Ben...pls go ti Cameron highland
At some point I will make it there 😄
N if u like spicy food...u tell the food shop ...saya mahu makan masakan yang pedas...i lime spicy food
Food looked fire
Gotta love Malaysian food / Nasi Kandar 🤩
yah if people who like night life, partying and alcohol better go to Thailand, Malaysia is more of a family oriented country its mostly food, playground and historical heritage spots there is night life but its not really a culture in Malaysia
Go up Maxwell hill. It's such a weird place n cool . A British relic at it's best. It was a ' summer ' capital .
4 hours for the next train is not that long... for comparison, its just like a time taken travelling from KL Sentral to Sunway Putra Mall, in total its 3 stops by KTM Komuter 🤭
Hahaha yes so far my experience with KTM Komuter is interesting 😂
Your new location looks cool. I like the apartment rental they gave you. Its large. Lol, eating with ur hands, I gotta get used to in my brain. I know that's how locals eat it, and you wanted to blend in. God bless you to handle spicy food. That would MURDER my intestines.
😳😵💫🤕
Yea this was a nice place, more quiet relaxed small town feel. Honestly I'd blend in way more if I just used utensils, I stick out like a sore thumb as a foreigner eating with the hands. So much so that I don't even like to eat around tons of people because every time someone starts a conversation with me about it while I'm trying to eat. I don't mind talking with people but it happens too often, so now I usually order takeaway and eat in the hotel.
Hi Ben, gee that was fast! Makanan Penang enak sekali. Tnx info on Agoda. Wasn't the Oriental Hotel pricey? Love Indian food on banana leaf, now your livin! Malaysia has delicious food! Sun is so much hotter near the equator. Rest, ac/sunscreen.Yogyakarta is one of favorite places to stay in Indonesia, wonderful people, street food, art, culture .Try: Jalan(street) Prawirotaman in Yogya, great accommodations under $US15. Easy 2 walk, transportation, train, etc.
Yea that hotel is really pricey but I got a free stay there for 1 night! Banana leaf Indian food is so good 🤩 maybe I should use sunscreen but I honestly don’t get sunburned, I’d really have to stay out for a long time in the most peak sun time. Ah I can’t wait to check out Yogyakarta
Next visit Melaka mate
Gonna be visiting Melaka soon for sure
We hv different menus here in mcd, kfc. Variety. Not similar to America and Canada. We LOVE pizza hut, kfc, mcd, a&w, domino's, etc etc etc
I do love Pizza Hut, my mom was a waitress here many years when I was growing up so I would go into work with her and eat free. McD I love too, I wish I could try more of the menu nowadays but I stick to the burgers without bun. Sounds sad but it’s still delicious, I literally order 2 of the double big Mac’s so I get 8 patties 😅
Ahh, land of beautiful girls. Some of the prettiest girls I know, most of them came from Taipeng and Ipoh. Maybe it's the water they drink or something... 😅😅😅
Ha interesting, usually this is the case the women from outside the city are beautiful and end up being the most beautiful ones in the big cities because they relocated
Yes the EMS
EMS train was great
I do not mind retiring in ipoh and taiping. Ipoh has the famous nasi ganja. No ganja inside don't worry.
I could eat that nasi ganja place every day 🤩
That big hotel room with only Rm50 is a good price bro.👍
You get tired of the local chicken .. KFC is really good in Malaysia The price is good.. I wasn't a big KFC fan in the US I like Popeyes Chicken... Malaysia would love Popeyes Chicken
Okay maybe I gotta try then, everyone says it’s different than the US one. My favorite in the US is Chick-fil-A, now that’s some GOOD fast food chicken
I would never TRUST Agoda ever again- Once too many times, it turned out really bad for our family vacays.
Ben you might want to ask locals for directions as you were looping around instead of directly walk towards the lake garden about 3 blocks away from the food court that you went through at the very start of your video
Yea I usually do, but at least I got to see a bit more by taking the long way 😁
Fast food for me I think most of the people just because of the proper place , avaibility and consistency where local food we can cook our self, and we dont have deep fry machine, plus local fry style not usually have a proper place n air-condition 😂
Yes this makes sense, I think here places like McD are much more consistent. I do love McD and I always will 😁
bro.. try to visit malaysian most famous cartoonist museum.. Lat.. there’s a museum in batu gajah, perak which shows all the works that he had done.. btw had my first nasi kandar when i was in penang.. it was so addictive that i can’t wait to hv it again the nx day.. wat i had was a very simple n basic nasi kandar.. boiled egg.. fried chicken n vege.. then went to kl.. a friend of mine recommended pelita nasi kandar… the taste was diff n not addictive like the penang one.. so yeah.. nasi kandar or food in general tastes better in penang.. try nasi dagang or nasi kerabu if u’re heading to
the east coast of malaysia bro… it’s coconut based rice..
Cool I need to check the museum next time. I agree about the addicting Nasi Kandar, every time I wanted another plate immediately, and when I got back to my hotel I was wishing I took some for takeaway too!
I have to say Pelita is not so great and expensive as well, very disappointing, I’m always surprised how many people are sitting eating there 🤔

Not every chinese foods are using soy. You can always ask the shops first.
But soy sauce is so common in Chinese food even I wouldn't recommend that he risk it. He's also allergic to carbs and sugar so I really can't think of any Chinese food that he can eat. Maybe just stir fry veggies with only garlic ginger and salt 😂.
Yea but 99% there will either be sugar, soy, or gluten in the dish, it’s risky. Yep stir fry veggies with garlic / ginger / salt sounds about right for me 😁😁
Rainiest place in Malaysia...
Yea somehow it didn’t rain while I was there
Taiping means peace in chinese.
Correct. There was a civil war between group a and group b. The hokkien and cantonese. The local malays also took sides as well. Damn. The british arrived to stop it.
Ah that’s cool! Felt like a peaceful town

How come you did not want to stay in Penang for a couple weeks... I was going to go... But a British guy in KL who was a local working for a motel told me there are a lot of food places to eat.. But it sucks and he suggested I did not go there I told him I like the beach but he told me they had swarms of jellyfish and lizards I do not mind the lizards but he told me it's not the kind of beach you are thinking about... Nobody locally had too many good things to say about it... They said there were a lot of sweatshops and factories not really tourism.
I only planned to go for a few days at most, I’m not looking to stay anywhere for a few weeks at the moment since I’m touring around the country. It would take me forever if I did this and I’d like to hit many places in a one month period. The food was the best I’ve ever had and it’s 1000% worth going to Penang, I’d go back right now for a few days again just to eat without hesitation. The main reason I didn’t stay at least a few more days is that I need to get back to KL to pick up a package I had shipped there from the US, so I’m going even quicker in each place right now. I haven’t checked out the beaches in Penang because the people told me they’re not great. I also hear mixed opinions on Langkawi with several people telling me I shouldn’t go, and others saying they love it there
Get up to Vietnam mate. Can fly from Penang. Danang is awesome and cheap can easy live for 1k a.month
