As Malaysian i do agree with your opinion. I don't say that our country doing better than vietnam because every country developed purposely for its own people while for Malaysia it has been developed for tourism in mind. For your information foreign investors are now investing heavily in vietnam on manufacturing so i wouldn't be surprised if Vietnam will actually change much faster in 5-10years. I am Vietnamese. I think of course Malaysia has a lot more points than Vietnam. Along with Thailand, the Malay people are very friendly, they do tourism very well. Malaysia's income is too good if Singapore is not included, double that of Thailand and three times that of Vietnam. I am also impressed with Malaysia's semiconductor industry, you had a vision 50 years ago and now Malaysia is the winner when the US-China trade war occurs. On the contrary, Vietnam was attacked by France in 1858 and since then we have gone through 5 wars with France, Japan, America, China, and Pol Pot, along with 20 years of embargo by the United States and the West. We have only been doing economic for 30 years and have had certain achievements. To be honest, we always looked at Thailand as a goal to overcome 30 years ago, but now I no longer pay attention to comparing Vietnam with other countries in Southeast Asia. I think Malaysia is Malaysia and Vietnam is Vietnam. I hope Vietnam continues to focus on technology to overcome the middle income trap. Cheers

    0) As a Thai, it is not fair for comparing of both countries with their current statuses: One has just been re-born from a war-torned ruin and just run their economy only 40 years with a lot of coming challenges. But another one has stood in pace since decolonization with some advantages and sensitive problems: ideologies, cultures and racial stereotype.
    1) With some tragic sympathy, the most valued things in Vietnam are PPL who are resilient & optimistic & patriotic and their Country has been there against all the great powers, otherwise they would be some minority in some country unnamed Vietnam.
    2) I agree with you for some clauses but some their ethnicities i.e. food with some EAST folk and WEST aspect decay fusion of preparing simple ingredients to finning culinary. Also, their geography, geopolitic are so related to their rich, beautiful, painful&proud history.

Unlike these languages, Malay like English are much simpler... pronounce it anyway you want but it will mean the same. Thank you for your video. I have not been to Malaysia yet, I do plan to in late 2025, but I lived in Vietnam for near two years and not just in HCMC. Vietnam is not easy to get around in because of the language. Hey it's their country and must respect that but geeze, the language barrier is pretty steep once you try to move past renting a room, ordering a beer and buying food. Ironically I loved the small motorcycle lifestyle, loved that part of the country. I have little interest in returning to Vietnam but I also recognize that part of that is that I was 57 years old when I lived there. Lots of young people enjoy Vietnam. I really really look forward to spending several trips to Singapore and I am investigating a retiree visa for Malaysia

Great review, I agree with most of what you said and I've lived in Vietnam for well over a decade. A few points I would highlight in my experience is that KL is great for nightlife, at least the times I went, more expensive of course for booze, but I've always had a blast there and never found religion an issue there for partying. As for rent in Saigon, my monthly rent (same 84sqm apartment) is about US$100-US$150 cheaper now than what it was more than a decade ago, there's an oversupply of apartments which makes for great deals! Looking fwd to your next vid!

I saw somewhere on youtube a news report of American soldiers who fought in Vietnam in the 1960s and early 1970s. Many have actually moved to Vietnam to live a country they once fought in fighting the Viet Cong in the Vietnam War. They actually prefer living in Vietnam these days than living in the U.S. I thought that was pretty amazing the irony of it. They fought in the Junglesof Vietnam and probably drove up and down Ho Chi Minh city in their U.S. Army jeeps now I wonder if they ever thought they would one come back to Vietnam to live here by choice. Yeah I heard Vietnam is popular with a lot of expatriates. Also Americans fought in Cambodia in the Air Force and a lot of those veterans have moved to live in Cambodia rather than live in the U.S. I found that story absolutely amazing. Makes you question what these AMerican soldiers and Australian soldiers they joined in too I am sure some Australian Vietnam war veterans have also moved to Vietnam and Cambodia because it give a better life for them in their old age than living in either America or Australia. Makes you wonder what did these guys fight for. Democracy? or was it for western corporate elites and their govt puppets.

In Vietnam a lot of services like zalo, shopee dont accept foreign bank cards, which means you often have to go into a physical shop, with queues & queue jumpers. Many people make a wrong assumption that they are comparing which country is better, but I think the intention of this video is to help tourist to decide for holiday trip, based on their food preferences, budgets, transportation, and communication.
But funny enough, a lot of the viewers are either Malaysian or Vietnamese.. lolz

This is more of family oriented comparison then a single or couple perspective.

A fairer comparison would be had if you have equal proficiency in both languages. Vietnam is aspiring to be Singapore 2.0 and is already benefiting massively from rapid economic development (check out their FDI and how much Singapore is investing in them now). As a largely homogenous population.. (mostly Kinh people ) and given the economy only opened up and started developing in the 90s, the current standard of English may be a bit lacking but will surely catch up in a few more years. Malaysia is a melting pot where we can find all sorts of cuisine... Malay, chinese (different dialect groups), indians, western, arabic, etc... whereas Vietnamese food is largely unique to the region (Northern, Central, Southern). I grew up eating Malaysian food all my life but in the past years, I've been crazy about Vietnamese food, culture and history.. and there's so much to explore than just the banh mi or pho - but I've got to say it's hard not to miss Malaysian food for it's more diverse and intense flavours. Infrastructure is tricky because of VN terrain, but driving is indeed a huge problem there.. personally at least. Vietnam is definitely more affordable (for now), but prices are slowly moving upwards! As someone who speaks English, Malay, Chinese and Vietnamese and is based in both, I have to say I miss VN when I am in MY, and vice versa. That's the real magic of being in ASEAN!

Malaysia is also receiving lots of FDI from high tech companies especially in semiconductors, EV and AI. Nvidia, Infineon, Intel, Microsoft, AT&S, Texas Instruments, Ericsson, Lam research and many more are investing billions in Malaysia collectively

First, those #2 and $3 meals you speak of in Vietnam are filled with cancer causing chemicals. Same with the coffee and tea. Vietnam is a bit pricy if you want to eat food without toxic chemicals. Also, the pollution in Vietnam is unbearable. And the traffic insane as well as very dangerous. Second, accommodations are quite expensive in Saigon, Vietnam if you want to be in district 1 (which is the best area by far). As far as costs for expats, you will pay $1200 to $3000 for a nice 2BR apartment in district 1. Any lower prices will mean your building is located in some sketchy narrow ally, karaoke at all hours of the night, etc. There is no such thing as a "cheap" place to live when you adjust for size, quality and other variables.
