I don't even know where to start with this one. It's been a whirlwind of a day, and I feel like I'm stuck in a nightmare. Let me give you the rundown.
I (18F) live with my mom and my stepdad Josh. My mom married Josh 6 months ago after a horrible divorce with my dad. I’m not getting into the details but my dad had an affair with someone and got caught in the “act”. It was awful, it was messy and I am not in contact with him anymore and neither is my mom. So now about Josh. J

    Honestly, I have a lot of questions/suspicions.
    1. Mom’s reaction was completely over the top. While I get the hurt and anger, how could she not wait for an explanation over an act that that seems out of the norm for a OP. Something had to have already been brewing in that household, perhaps even earlier suspicions of stepdad’s behavior.
    2. Why the hell did the stepdad wait to present his gift before bedtime? Especially when there was a surprise party with public gift opening? His gift should have been the lead-up before the concert tickets, and he could’ve given a heartwarming speech as to why he wanted something of his own.
    3. There is no guarantee that stepdad and Peter were not in it together. The texts just refer to generic talk of a gift without details of planning. Who’s to say there was not a financial agreement for Peter to take the fall, especially considering he barely served time.
Obviously, we’re only getting part of the story but overall there seems to be deeper issues at hand.

I grew up being slapped around by my parents. When I turned 18, I got into a fight with my stepdad and he threatened to slap me. I told him that since I am now 18, I am an adult which would make that ASSULT which would make that ILLEGAL. This man who never worked a day in law enforcement tried to say that because I lived with them (since I was STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL) the cops would take ME away an not him. So told him “alright, wanna bet? Slap me so I can call the cops and we’ll see who they take away.” I guess he wasn’t expecting that because he kind of had a brain malfunction before walking away lol never got slapped or threatened with a slap after that from him or my mom. My grandpa did once because I cursed in front of him, but I whipped around, stuck my finger in his face, and told him if he ever hit me again I would smack him back twice as hard. Still watching the video and at the point where the parents are blaming 'Peter', but it seems weird to me that Josh knew that the clock was in the bin at 7am in the morning, or even earlier, given that's when the Mother woke OP to confront her about the clock being in the bin, which means maybe Josh was aware of the clock's altered position at least 15 minutes before that, which accounts for him then telling his wife and her deciding to confront her daughter about it. Why didn't the mother question how Josh knew the status of the clock? It is normal for Josh to just 'check up' on his stepdaughter by opening her bedroom door while she's still asleep? Of course, the most likely explanation is that it is still Josh, not Peter, who is responsible for the clock, and he knew about the clock's location in the bin, because he check the spy camera and figured out that it had been removed.
Also, surveillance devices like spy cameras require a decent consistent power draw, unless they have constant mains power connection. And it would also have to have a wireless transmitter for anyone to access a real time visual stream. There's nothing on the market, even in the professional level hardware that could have a battery that could power an always on camera feed of any decent quality, for more than a few days, or maybe a week or two at most, depending on the size of the clock. Even then, they couldn't fill all the space in a large clock with battery, because anyone handling it would immediately notice the excessive weight. As for the wireless component to broadcast captured video data to a receiver, even a really good one doesn't have a range larger than a typical yard size for a house. So with all that in mind, what was 'Peter' going to do when the battery ran out? And how was he going to capture the wireless stream? By parking in their driveway or in front of their curb and hoping they didn't notice.

@@nikkismith2858 He noticed the clock in the bin at 6:45am? Why would he be opening his stepdaughter's bedroom door at 6:45am? Just that sounds a bit creepy to me. As for the spy tech, it's not an area I am intimately familiar with, but information technology is my professional field, so I am pretty clued-up with camera technology, networking and transmission aspects, and battery limits.
Really though, it doesn't take much to figure all this out even for the moderately tech-savvy person. Mobile phone companies would sacrifice their firstborn children for a light weight, battery that could run a modestly powerful phone for more than 3 days between charges, as that would be a game changer technology in the industry, so it makes no sense that somehow the spy camera industry has access to a revolutionary light battery that can run for a protracted period to power a camera / clock that takes and streams real time high definition video.
As for the wireless industry, the issue isn't just a limit of the current technology to broadcast further than a certain range (currently about the size of a mid-house yard), it's a legal barrier, too. There are pretty solid legal limits to punching out high-powered (and therefore longer throw) wireless broadcasts, as they can actually interfere with other devices that communicate within the frequency, and without strict legal mandates that companies have to adhere to, a device like this could potentially overlap, something like a local medical device.
It seems like the story wrapped up with the offending party having been investigated and caught by the police, but it just seems weird to me, as it doesn't make sense how the guy would have dealt with the numerous limits and issues that seem obvious to me.
Maybe he just didn't think about it, or care. He was hoping random luck and good timing would net him a few scraps of short bedtime nudie teen video, before the battery died, if he parked right outside at the curb at the right time in the evening?

@@nikkismith2858 - He must have been taking the trash out at 6:45am in the morning then. If you listen to the story, the daughter got woken up at 7am the following morning after she trashed the clock late during the preceding night. Her mother, yelling at her about the clock and her being a spoiled brat, was what woke her up, so given that, the stepfather must have somehow seen the state of the clock sometime before 7am, and had enough time to complain to Mother dearest, which then caused her to go hulk on her sleeping daughter. Given all that, I think it's still pretty fricking weird for the stepfather to be prowling around in his stepdaughter's bedroom in the early morning before she's awake.
OP put the clock in a trash bag specifically so that it couldn't be used to see her, so step daddy, wouldn't simply have been able to open her bedroom door and know at a glance that the obscured clock was in the bin, he just would have seen that it wasn't immediately visible, but he told his wife where it was, because when she screamed at her daughter about it, she already knew it was in the trash, it was why she was so pissed. She thought the clock had been dumped in the trash because her daughter thought it was too 'cheap' looking.

So naive to trust Josh. That message could literally be them talking about finding a cam clock. Since they clearly had that convo irl and not in texts. Saying she trusts Josh is so dumb... literally made me roll my eyes. Its just very suspicious.

    2) OP doesn’t even ask for a lock on her door
    3) what happened to the clock? Why chuck it out if you’re bringing cops into it?
    4) OP so used to being slapped she’s got no trauma counselling for it?

OP should press charges against Josh, Peter and her mom. Josh and Peter for the camera and images, and her mom for the assault. I would never forgive my mom for the slap and for not believing me. Never ever get rid of the evidence you have, and never hesitate to go to the police. Hope OP learns from this and becomes someone better than her mom and Josh.

I could be mistaken, but don't those hidden cameras usually have a limited transmission range? Und, if they're WiFi enabled, they'd have to be intentionally connected to a WiFi network. Or if the images\footage is stored locally. How did Peter plan on recovering it\them.
The good news is that the stuffed animals turned out to be safe.
But as others have said,it is very disturbing that the mothers first reaction was to violently slap her daughter und *NOT* give her the chance to explain why.
While the OP's reaction to these nanny cams as they are commonly referred is understandable.
They *DO* have a legitimate purpose. People buy them all of the time to monitor the actions of domestic help, i.e. nanny's, babysitters, maids, et cetera. Usually, it's a case of closing the barn door *AFTER* the horse has run away.
Und I am sorry, but given that the mothers first reaction was to violently slap her daughter und not listen to her. It does make me wonder at least a little bit as too how innocent she und Josh are.
Also given that these digital pinhole cameras can be hidden pretty much anywhere. I will repeat the advice I have heard multiple times. After checking into a hotel or motel. The very *FIRST* thing that you should do is to turn off *ALL* of the lights, open the camera app on your phone und scan your room to make sure that there aren't any hidden cameras.
A bit of trivia for everyone. It's not just hidden cameras that the camera on a cellphone can detect. Take your phone, open the camera app. Turn off the lights. Grab your remote control. Point it at your phone's camera. Press the buttons.
If it's an IR (infrared) remote, your camera will detect it as well.

What I least understand is how the slap was just brushed off.
It starts with a slap, then it gets worse.
Furthermore, violence is never the way to go to correct a child, the trust between them will forever be scarred.
A LOT of studies have proven this, which is why a lot of modern, western, Free countries have made it illigal to hit, slap, spank or in any way cause bodily harm to a child for any reason.
I would never forgive such a thing & you can ask but forgiveness (I would prefer a sincere apology and making amends, asking forgiveness is not the same thing) is not always given & you can't force someone to forgive.
In this sitution though the "mom" would not even listen to her before taking this extreme action, honestly that is more concerning than anything & is ultimately what would have broken my trust completely, she took his side, her man, before her daughter, that is how predators get away with the most awful abuse & SA on young girls, the mothers do not defend their dughters & let it continue & escalate while blaming the child & protecting the criminal.
Maybe in the future we will learn to truly value, respect and protect our children but it is not today I'm afraid, not even parents can properly do this clearly by this post as just one example.

NTA OP, at being deeply upset about what you found out. However, if your stepdad has proof that it was someone else who actually bought the clock and who, therefore, would know what sort of site it was purchased from (if purchased online) or what sort of shop it was bought from, you should give him a chance to speak and show you what happened. It all seems to hinge on whether your stepdad knew about the camera. Your mum loves you and would not be in on such a scheme unless she thought you had been doing something terribly wrong and needed to watch you. In the absence of any wrongdoing on your part, this would not be the case. As you have known Josh for a long time and he has not done anything which made you feel uncomfortable before, it is unlikely that he is what you suspect. As you seem previously not to have had any problem with him, give him the benefit of the doubt and hear him out. You can explain to him how you found stuffed toys with cameras on the site and that is why you had bagged all the toys he and your mum had given you. Innocent until proven guilty is an important concept of law and, in the circumstances, you should give your step father a chance to explain and show you what proof he has that he did not buy the gift for you, imo. Your mum and you are going to be vigilant from now on, regardless of what anyone says, which is a horrible situation if, as seems likely, your step dad is entirely blameless.

Allowing that it’s all true and only Peter behind it, it seems like it would be a long time before OP would really trust her mom again. Josh I could see her trusting, as he was lazy about getting a gift. Mom showed she can’t be counted on, and is likely going to feel guilty about it and be a long time trying to make amends.

Cause sometimes, very Intuitive victims behave like something serious has to be taken up a peg when it comes to the dramatics of it.
Op wanted to rage bait her mom. She really sat around waiting for her mom to react to finding the clock. She really waited for her mom to hold the bias that the clock was thrown away for being cheap. She was asked why it was tossed in the garbage and instead of saying camera was in it, she opened with an uncivilized insult to gaslight her mother further instead of properly communicating.
Op waited for her mother to react to it. She literally did not run immediately to her mother and she let her mother sleep in a bed with a bad person instead of running.
Getting slapped across the face was like all the dramatics she needed to decide that she gets to feel validated for not explaining something so that her mom is still the bad guy cause she did want her mom to have the wrong perception so she gets to be in the right but she wasn't even interested in communicating or shutting it down. She wanted to escalate it more than it has to be.

OK so your child is upset but rather then trying to find out why alot of you folks make excuses for the mom because she is emotional? The child was emotional but so what she had no reason to try and protect herself from a perv(unknown but a perv) It is amazing how it is the childs fault for being emotional and not being clear about what happened but god forbid if the mother reacted with a slap instead of trying to figure out what was happening. The thing that makes me so angry is that people do not have enough support(friends/family etc) and/or the ability to think for themselves. the child went to friends house and friend seems to have a god head on her shoulders.

  • @WillianyAmill
    @WillianyAmill 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

You guys, the mom was not even gonna get an explanation cause it looked like op threw the clock away without saying anything and then lounged around waiting for her mother to react to it being in the garbage like it was discarded for being a cheap knock off.
The op meant for the mother to precieve this as a bias that the op was disrespectful without reason. It isn't as if op got up immediately to take herself and her mother out of the house. She let her mother continue sleeping in bed with that man.
There was like literally no logical fkn common sense reason to lounge around and wait until her mother found it first as if she was rage baiting a disrespected reaction from her mom to then be like, "oh I gas light you into screaming at me and defending him cause you precieved that I called him cheap so now I have a rational justified reason not to tell you a damn thing."
If you're a stoic sociopath, a gaslighter and you practice cognitive and intuitive pathology enough you can notice in stories and the fetails that arent spoken that people that want everyone eles to be in the wrong can rage bait someone to react terribly and then its their fault when you didnt want to communicate the details anyones so that they could look like the foolish currupt ones.
She wanted her mother to find it at the top of the garbage bin and teact to it and ask questions so that instead if explaining she would just drop uncivilized insults at her moms partner to play a mind game of who will mom choose in the heat of the moment while mom is hopping mad cause op didnt adequately use proper communication. 🙄

So I do think the mum should have listened to her daughter instead of just going off at her but I think this situation is covering up something else in my view.
If I was op’s ‘dad’ I would get a dna test done. I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out ‘uncle’ Josh is her dad.
Yes the ex should have just left instead of cheated but op may just realise not everything is black and white.

Story 1 makes no sense, at all first how she reacts and how the mother reacts.

    • @WillianyAmill
      @WillianyAmill 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Because op was never going to explain or communicate it seriously.
She threw the clock away in the top of the bin where her mother was going to find it cause she was lounging around waiting for her mother to react to it and ask questions first. And instead of explaining it appropriately she opens the argument with dropping uncivilized insults like a game of rage bait mommy into perceiving the bias that I threw it away cause it's cheap.
Just cause op is a victim doesn't mean she can't be an intuitive gaslighter about it. Victims practice behaviors that are more spiteful than they have to be. She really wanted to test rage baiting her mom into yelling at her for thinking the clock was cheap so that leaving and not explaining anything would be more justified.

I wish grown a&% people would stop ''playing'' teenagers, and wanting reactions from it on reddit
    It is creepy
And, I do wish the FBI, or any versions of it from any which country will take it seriously
This story reads almost the same (different circumstances)
    BUT
In the same level of unbelievable post/words, of that one post who had the guy asking for advices, because his 17 year old gf was pregnant, he was 17 years old too, and she was being the most difficult person to ever lived or breathed..
The nuances from that story and this one, seems extremely similar
It's creepy, coz, it was discovered that a 30 or something year old woman, wrote the story..
    She did not confess btw...
    it was...
Redditors, were so concerned, that they investigated and found it out
This story.. it sounds the same as that previous one
