Well before cell cameras, my mechanics instructor had that tip in '75. For heavy rear axels or drum brakes do one side at a time. Good tip!

Ft Carson, Co, 1986. Did a “brake job” on my ‘79 Dodge van. Upon driving it, and only a few feet, mind you, I heard “crunch crunch crunch” from the rear wheel. So I got to do it again. So, um, yeah, lesson learned. One at a time.

PROTIP: If it's anything like a Toyota, once you have the brakes cobbled back together you pull on the parking brake to ratchet out the adjusters until it stops clicking. Whether you check tolerances between the OD of the shoes and the ID of the drum is up to you.

Oh man. I did my first set of drum brakes ever maybe almost a month ago. Thankfully I did take pictures but unfortunately I didn’t take a lot of them and I ended up getting the pads backwards at the end. The longer pad had to be in the rear and I had it towards the front like an idiot, so I had to take them all apart and get them set up again properly. Drum brakes sucks only because of the stubbornness of the springs and everything falling apart on you.
