ASH vs MAPLE vs BIRCH - Which is better? Wood Baseball Bat Reviews

  • The Bat Bros take a stab at the age-old debate - WHICH WOOD IS BEST??
Watch the video first - but here are our thoughts:
    ASH
    -Most balanced-swinging of the 3
-Probably the widest-performing sweet spot of the 3
-Definitely the least pop/carry distance of the 3
    -Most flex of the 3
-Durability will be not as good in the sense that the barrel grains will likely flake apart after awhile - but the handle isn't necessarily more or less durable than maple or birch.
    MAPLE
    -Most endload of the 3
-The smallest-performing sweet spot of the 3
-Probably the most pop/carry distance of the 3
    -The stiffest of the 3
    BIRCH
-Swing weight was somewhere between maple & ash - this swing weight felt most optimal though.
-Sweet spot was somewhere between maple & ash
-Pop was quite a bit better than ash, and almost as good as maple
-A bit less flex than ash, but quite a bit more flex than maple.

Yes! Thanks for doing this so quickly... I really think you did a great job in comparing the feel of each model. As a smaller guy who grew up with Ash - for me the switch to Maple wasn't the easiest. Because it was denser - I needed a turn model with less end load... so I landed on a 110 (which is a very balanced bat with a thick handle). This gave me a much more even swing... and you absolutely nailed it when you said barreling it up on the Maple is the key. With Ash - I'm able to swing a bat that has a bigger barrel and thinner handle. The drawback is that with thinner handles and it being made of Ash - it's more likely to break... especially when you get jammed. Teammate of mine recently purchased a Birch bat and he's very happy. The sound is ODD. I didn't pick up on the weird sound in the video... but of the three it's DEFINITELY not the nicest sounding. I really hope you guys continue to play around with lumber... and some other turn models. I mean it when I say that there are so few resources out there that comparing these models... and i know a lot of people in Wood Bat Leagues that would be very interested in seeing these videos. Keep up the amazing work!

That’s gunna be close to 4 bills but that bat is juiced and super durable. I’m saving up for one. But if your dead set on buying a wood bat be my guest, but I suggest doing your homework. Don’t ask the guy at DICK’s about a wood bat. See what the pro’s use, if you can try some out. Want a WS, need a durable bat, ie Baum or a DeMarini. Good luck bud. Interesting. I'd agree with the analysis for the most part. I, along with most of my friends growing up, used Ash bats mostly and they were generally more "forgiving" vs the few times I used a Maple bat. I wasn't consistent at all with one in the beginning, but when I'd get a good hit off the Maple, it would launch the ball for an almost guaranteed HR. Started using them more but was already getting too old. Never swung a Birch bat, so I wonder what it would be like if I was a young player.

    You have chosen wisely!
I understand why Maple is so popular, but most of us aren't as strong, nor hit as well as MLB players, so the obvious benefit of Maple is kind of lost. Birch is a surprising compromise - I honestly didn't think that it would have nearly as much pop. I really thought it would be similar to Ash, only not quite as squishy. Guess I'll have to give Birch a shot - especially if it has the same kind of sweet spot that I associate with Ash.
Glad you're putting up this kind of content! Keep it up Bros!
PS - I'm shocked that JT didn't crack the Ash bat with the hit off the end of the barrel.

Fun channel! Although I don't want to repeat other comments, but I'm an old school guy (70's & 80's) who played HS and college ball through the transition from wood (Ash) to composite, then aluminum. I'm also a forestry major so your comments of wooden bats are intriguing, given what I know about hardwood tree properties. It's not just any Maple, Ash or Birch that are suitable for bats. Only certain species work. For example, as a kid I remember using a local brand called "Oregon Ash" bats (Fraxinus latifolia). They were awful--anything near the handle would painfully shatter those things! Via Darwinian forces it was other ash species that rose to the top, especially F. americana, a tree in the eastern U.S.

I was always partial to ash. It swings a little lighter and has a larger sweetspot than maple. I also think ash is more durable in terms of handle flex. You can mis hit a ball somewhat and not crack it. With maple if you miss the barrel even an iota the handle shatters like glass. Maple is such a rigid wood. No flex.

My son said their SB271 feels like Little League bat. If have any trouble getting one from them, may we can work out sending my son's 32 in minus 2. But he will need it back LOL. always been confused about wood bats. how are you suppose to hold the bat with the ink dot. and does the birch have an ink dot because i know that ash usually doesn’t.

Hey there Will and JT. I’m 13. I’ve been looking at a few bats and 2 DeMarini’s caught my eye. They are USSSA and drop 5. The 2020 CF Glitch and the 2020 CF Zen. If you could check these out and give your opinion on them that would mean so much to me. Keep up the amazing videos!

Would like to see your opinion on the Mine Beechwood bats. Supposedly the wood grain is tighter, stiffer and launches bombs.

You guys should test an old school true hickory bat. One of those old 44 ounce clubs.

You should make and try a video with a corked wood bat and compare with the regular one ?
