What is better: an "uncupped" wood bat or a "cupped" wood bat? | Baseball Bat Bros

  • The Baseball Bat Bros swing 2 wood bats with the same exact specs - but one has a standard "cup" on the end, and one is fully "uncupped". These are both 33.5" / 31 oz Chandler RH7 maple wood bats (the signature bat of MLB player Rhys Hoskins).

      That's the one thing that I think football lacks, in regards to all of the other sports. Football doesn't really have a signature sound. Basketball has the swish of the nets. Even hitting the rim is still basketball. Baseball has bat contact, even the sliding sound. Hockey, tennis, golf all have signature sounds. Football doesn't really have one.
      Totally agree though. The sound of bat to ball never gets old, but esp with wood.

    Been working on the art of cupping myself. There's issues with endcap durability and chipped bats that I'm looking to alleviate, but cupping is still an effective method of bat modification. It's like a legal version is corking. The mlb has reduced the allowed depth of cupping over the years, but it's still an open variable. Cupping reduces volume slightly to increase density by a roughly 1-2%. This isn't a dramatic difference in terms of power, however in terms of bat flex and durability, it is a neat benefit. It does bring back the balance point of a bat without changing the MOI or sweet spot LOCATION too much so the swing weight feels better without losing as much power as a different uncupped turn model of equal swing weight.
    That's the main argument that players have, if cupping is there to make a bat more balanced, why not just get a more balanced bat? Of which mass distribution is the answer as to why it's effective. Logically, you get an uncupped turn model, saw off like .5 inches from the end and it'll have the same amount of mass removed from the end, but the MOI and sweet spot location is now in a totally different area. That's why with wood, trial and experimentation is the best way to get your personal gamer

    To my understanding, cupped bats are denser because with the reduced weight of the cupping, they can balance with denser wood. This should result in faster velos, as the bat aborbs less of the impact and instead redirects more of it back into the ball. However, uncupped in end loaded and drives the ball farther. It’s a perfect difference of contact hitter vs power hitter

    • @baseballbatbros
      @baseballbatbros  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      yep it really kind of washes out in the end in our opinion. Just depends on the hitter. There are hall of famers that are on both sides

    • @dominicteneriello9977
      @dominicteneriello9977 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How could a bat with better exit velos not go as far? I’m not questioning your idea on bat density, but would that just mean cupped bats are better because they are lighter and hit the ball harder/farther.

    • @Dr.MalcomsBrokenLeg
      @Dr.MalcomsBrokenLeg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dominicteneriello9977 Cupped bats aren't considered "better", it's mostly about what you can control better. For instance, guys who swing the heavy power hitter bats like Vlady Jr are able to control the bat even though its a heavy end loaded uncupped 243 variant and he is so strong he of course still gets really high exit velos because hes just damn strong. However, you got a player like Matt Chapman who is considered a versatile hitter in my opinion he swings a cupped C271L. Not necessarily a power hitter bat, but he swings it so fast and has so much control with his bat and he has enough strength to generate enough power from it and also get higher exit velocity because the wood is strong enough even with a smaller sweet spot. If that same hitter tried to swing a heavier bat, he still might hit a home run but he would have probably lower exit velocity, slower bat speed and probably less bat control. Now there does have to be a balance of course, you can't get good exit velo or distance if you are using a very very light bat because there isn't enough mass to get behind the ball. You will have to fight and almost push the barrel through the zone vs letting there be some mass to help you out once you get to the ball. I feel like I made it more confusing for you, but oh well.

    • @dominicteneriello9977
      @dominicteneriello9977 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dr.MalcomsBrokenLeg ok that makes sense, vlad, judge, and Stanton seem to have uppers 70s low 80s bat speed, along with a heavier bat. That gives them more power, so to simplify it, swing the heaviest bat that gives you mid 70s bat speed, or if your Arron judge swing a 35 inch bat faster than people swing 33.5s. And the cupping is used to increase a bit of mass instead of having to go up an entire inch or half inch of bat, while adding power.

    • @Dr.MalcomsBrokenLeg
      @Dr.MalcomsBrokenLeg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dominicteneriello9977 In short yeah, for instance I went back and forth between a 110 and T141 both maple and both were cupped 33inches & 30.5 ounces. Hardest ball I ever hit was about 101 and that was with the 141 model. But, I really reared into that one. Otherwise, I averaged about 97ish with both bats. In terms of the numbers though dude, don't let them get on your mind too much. If you hit homeruns or get clean peppered base hits. No one cares how hard they were hit. Focus on what you can swing without sacrificing your ability to control the bat and have good barrel control. Rest is all mechanics and doing what you need to do to be productive.

    This is really interesting. Thank you guys for making this one! I've been curious about this myself. I've found that on my company's bats, the deeper the cup the smaller the sweet spot, regardless of turn model. Reducing weight with a deeper cup may help create balance and increase swing speed, but potentially at the cost of a smaller sweet spot.
    Another thing that may be interesting to test/measure would be the impact that different shapes and depths of cups would have on the performance and feel of different turn models and types of woods. Spherical-shaped cups (like the one in this vid) may create different results than more cylindrical-shaped cups, such as those from Sambat or MAXbat. Probably very subtle differences, but may be interesting to test out!
    Thanks again guys, looking forward to your next wood bat video!

    Hey Will,
    Thanks for this awesome video. I used to live in Portland. Nice day in OR for April. I've experimented with cupped and uncupped bats and I think that your analysis is dead on. I learned that it's not a bad idea to start with a cupped bat and if you really like the model, you can work up to an uncupped version as you get used to it and develop better control. Over/Under training really helps. I just ordered a 33.5" / 31 oz. cupped i13 from American Batsmith. It's got the normal 2.54" barrel, not your signature version. So, I thought that cupping would be very helpful. BTW: I looked for the Chandler RH7 on their website and couldn't find it. Is that a custom bat that can't be ordered by the normal process?

    id suggest if you want to get it cupped then go for a 33.5/30.5 i13 model. if you want to get it uncupped then i suggest going for a 33/30 110 or 271 model

      I swing a 33/30 uncupped 271 Yellow Birch bat and love it :) I hit a screaming line drive yesterday, but right back at the pitcher lol. Sucks, but I loved the contact, didn't feel anything.

      @@paul-baseballcollector. i swing a C243 KR3 Maple and its solid, but i find having the cup on the 33/30 to have a bit less barrel than i'd like. for my next bat id like to go birch and a bit longer with the cup still

      @@baileysmith4744 I've heard bad reviews about KR3 bats and their wood not being solid. I live in Québec, Canada and we have one well-known company here named B45 (Bros tested the B13c) and two other: Märk Lumber (a bunch of Minor Leaguers swing them) and TBF (which is what I swing, their bats are as good as B45 but much cheaper. Nobody knows this company much, very underrated).
      We have very cold winters here in Québec, so the wood is the hardest it can be! Above the 45th parallel

      @@paul-baseballcollector. B45 is big league birch wood, and Mark Lumber is solid. KR3 are great bats but they are mainly known for wood composite maple. their bats can be hit or miss, but the best bats are honestly incredible. ive heard mixed reviews about them but one thing i heard consistently was they are durable and have a great swing weight for a 243 model, and the barrels can be hot if you get a good one

    How 🔥 would that Red & Blue Rawlings composite be if they offered it in an uncupped version?! Love mine but feels terrible off the end of the bat!

      Also, the 110 composite one is practically a C271 with a sort of half cup, idk if it was intended to be like that, but I'm not complaining because I love my Trinity CS271's that are uncupped 👍🏻

      @@baseballbatbros would definitely be even more 🔥 uncupped, but the cup on it already is pretty small and shallow. idk if it differs from bat to bat, but it's a lot smaller of a cup than the one on the 243.
