Moral of the story: Retro game shops believe the definition of refurbishing is a cloth wipe with car dash products, exactly what was used on the shell.
The legal definition of this word is extremely loose, can't say every single one thinks that's the meaning but I'm sure many know what they're doing in terms of calling it refurbished when it's not.
There are some interesting ones that I think might have a shot at being better because requirements are more stringent to be refurbished (Amazon renewed and eBay refurbished - also some independent people/shops on eBay that sell refurbished). Definitely have some more exploring to do lol
For 500USD, and still not refurbished... I'm gonna take a guess that the people who said they bought products in good condition from them, just got "luckie" and ended up with a product which was well maintained by the OG owner
As you saw in this video they actually have really good controllers and they only sell them for a 20-25% mark up. Got 5 from them over the years and they've all been spotless, I'd go as far to say in like new condition. It would seem that all of these reselling companies use the term refurbished very loosely when it comes to consoles though.
Do not have high expectations. I’ve already heard so so comments about their refurbishment… and that letter is a huge problem when you first open the box. Thank you for doing this public service video.

The ONLY issue I had with the Sega CD specifically was when the system would not read the disc, but when I realigned the motor slightly it just worked ever since. I'm no expert and I've accidentally broke my childhood PS3 when I tried to delid the CPU and accidentally scraped off 2-3 resistors off the board, but even I tried my best to thoroughly clean the system out. I've also cleaned off 2 ps3 Slims as well so its not that much of a hassle.

It's good you're calling out these "refurbished" claims out. I'd personally never buy a system for that much, since I'm ok with nostalgia staying nostalgic, but it's good for the people who buy them thinking they're paying for some thing they aren't. It's like going to a really fancy restaurant that claims they use top fresh ingredients, only to go and get served almost expired ingredients.
I think these retro shops are using "refurbished" like car engine/transmission shops use the term "rebuilt". They technically can only replace a few parts and can say they are rebuilt. I think it's down to over working the employees, short staff, and trying to get orders out fast. The quality just goes down. No QC or they just don't care.
wiping it down and leaving behind residue is not even poorly refurbishing ..there is no refurbishing going on at all here.. these sites are embarrassing.
For 500$ on Ebay you can get a PS3 that has been actually refurbished THOROUGHLY, everyhing cleaned properly, outside AND inside. Greasing when necessary, replacing laser etc., having been DELIDed, recapped, 500 GB HD, custom fans and more mods in it. It will literally run better than a new PS3 back then and be good for many years. If they're calling this "refurbished" then we should be calling monopoly money real money, and pay with that! Here's some "funny money" for your "funny console"!
I have one I'm trying to sell on eBay for $125 that is completely refurbished with a complete teardown, cleaning, new battery and thermal paste. And I can't get it sold. Apparently the trick is not to any work and ask three times the value because people seem willing to buy those lol
I think this is what it is: most people are used to seeing those high prices from "legit" sellers and when they see yours for a fraction of the price, they're like "oh it can't be good then". If I needed a PS3 I would gladly buy yours and I hope you sell it soon.
I can't believe dk doesn't snatch it for that price. If they don't try aggressively picking up cheaper stock, they'll find themselves having to rely on customer service and good initial quality of refurbishment.
Technically refurbished doesn't mean opening up and cleaning. It just means putting the item into a working state. With that being said I do think places like this should open things up and clean it but I'm sure that becomes a time and money issue. Now if they state they open the consoles that's another story. I will never understand why people thinking refurbished means you get all the OG hookups and controllers. Again, that doesn't fall into the definition of refurbished. Personally I only buy items that have a picture of the actual item I'm getting. This way you just save yourself a huge headache on condition.
I bought stuff from Lukie once probably 5 years. Just a couple games and a plush. Just to give them the benefit of the doubt they may still be decent for just the games, but again my order was years ago. I think I bought Devil May Cry 1-3 and a pokemon plush. games worked, CIB as advertised, plush was clean. I will say that I absolutely love these in depth analysis vids on consoles from these sites, especially given what these supposedly reputable sites charge for them so PLEASE keep doing this so we can hold them accountable and be able to make more informed decisions going forward because that console was pretty embarassing
yeah but lets try not to harass them so much like what people are doing with dkoldies lukie games i love without a doubt its a bit pricey but the quality is good imho but the fat ps3 i don't think anyone wants to deal with now
@@Viper-jr4sp I'm certainly not condoning harassing the businesses. Videos like this that break down the consoles that claim to be cleaned and refurbished are the perfect way to go about this without a doubt.

I've bought from Lukies before, and I'm at the beginning of the video currently, but they've been legit for me personally. I've had zero issues with Lukie Games, and for the most part, their pricing is pretty fair.
I got a game gear game from them for only $1.95 off their ebay account and $3 for shipping. Didn’t work at first, then I blowed into the cartridge and it works fine.
That bubble wrapping is kinda delicate, so the person packing this order might've popped them from closing and taping the top of the box or they popped during shipment. I use the same bubble wrap and sometimes it will deflate or stay intact
I've actually had nothing but good experiences with Lukie games. I've bought several games from them, and the only "flub" I would say is I needed to replace the battery in a copy of Metroid 2 after a week of playing it. That being said, a Backwards compatible PS3 has no business being $500 when it's half that price on Ebay.
I've actually spent thousands of dollars thru lukie games I re them to everyone I know for retro. I found them a few years ago and to be honest I've actually never had any issue with them. The disc based games they re surface them to make them look new. I always get complete for disc based games and they come with everything. He'll for some of my og xbox games it even had the free Xbox live codes that they use to put in the cases and they were never scratched off. Long story short idk man me and a few of my friends who collect retro can vouche for lukie games. Now dk oldies I've always heard horror stories from them. And also lukie games is a he'll of alot cheaper then dk oldies.
some people warm up the warranty sticker to prevent it from voiding which after they got done opening it and putting it back together, they must’ve sticked it back on idk if im right, i never bought a console from them before
You know, this videos are a motivation for me to try to open my small personal shop for refurbished consoles and try to do it RIGHT. Videogames are my passion, it hurts to see this kind of things.
Bought a PS1 game from lukie games some years ago and it came in terrible condition, the case was broken and there was no manual inside + the disc were not in a decent condition. They said they were gonna refund me and they didn't.
Their only chance to get ahead their competition and they already blew it. I have strong faith that there's a retro game store out there that ACTUALLY refurbishes their consoles. I was actually considering buying from Lukie games but, I guess I'll have to wait until we find this one store that's like the beacon of light in the middle of the dark.
It’s just crazy… you’d think after hearing about all this drama with Dkoldies and whatnot and seeing who placed the order they would at least attempt to make it good lmao
I actually bought two consoles from them--a Gamecube that lasted quite a while, and a Super Nintendo when I first got to college and it worked for about a day. I'm actually going to buy a PS2 from them.
Yeah samee I used to use them back then , I once bought a n64 from em back then and it was all good too but that was way back then so who knows how things are now
I remember takin a gamble on my BC 80 PS3 from eBay. The pictures were very poor. One thing that they didnt go is take a picture of the Console version or the shiny plate to confirm it was indeed BC. So I paid 200 bucks back in 2020. Came in and I felt relieved it was BC. Tested and it couldnt play PS2 games, well turns after I talked to the previous owner, she only used it to watch movies. So what I did is replace the laser, and it runs now like a champ. Do get a little heat ramp up, but I dont really play a lot on it. She told me she bought it when it released back in 2006. Came with an extra six axis controller as the bundle. Still have it till now.
Genuinely surprised as I've bought tons of stuff from Lukie Games over the past few years, ranging from games, consoles, and accessories and everything has been top notch!
At this point it seems like you have a business opportunity, you see the competition failing. You have the fan base do it better. At least Lukie tried, cleaning is not always the best approach on the inside with older gear ESPECIALLY if it works. It was wiped down for sure but not refurbished.
I feel like alot of these companies just got waaay too ahead of themselves. Maybe at one point they actually paid more attention to detail when actually refurbishing the consoles, but sales ramp up, far too much stock. Not enough man power. Possessed by profit, and not wanting to pay for more labor. Just my thought. Awesome stuff as always my friend. 👍
I wouldn't even pay $500 for a brand new PS3 today. where is this a great condition? but for $500 the PS3 has to have a really high gloss shine with the look of a brand new console.. that's just a used console with signs of use for way too much money. with the wrong item description or scam.
I only bought my wii from lukie games and it works just fine but wii's are built to last. It worked and looked good 👍 video on my channel. I dont have the tools to open up my console but from the fans from what i could see inside looked clean. I have not purchased anything else yet. But I've had a good experience. For like 90 bucks, now 70. But mine said "okay condition" so i wasn't expecting anything fabulous.
I just bought a ps3 from a refurbish site(I assumed it was supposed to be a phat one since the description said 4 USB ports) and the image they used was a phat ps3. When I checked the tracking page and the weight was 3.7 Kg and not 5 Kg which the phat one weighs, I started to get a bad feeling about it. It arrived today and when I picked up the box you could hear the system sliding around in there. Opened it up and was greeted by a ps3 slim and not the backwards compatible one I thought I was getting. I checked my invoice and order and stuff and like mentioned it is supposed to have 4 USB ports, this one they sent only has 2 ports. The original warranty sticker seems to still be on as well making me unsure if they even opened it.
That residue on the console is from the wiping cloth. Most likely they have a small container or bucket with cleaning solution. So the residue is grease and whatnot from multiple consoles..
Do a lap on Motorstorm & see if the console overheats. I bought the same BC model from them and it overheats and shuts down if you play games that are too graphically intensive.
I would be really disappointed to receive that after paying 500. I have limited interaction with Lukie and DK oldies. My 2 purchases from DK oldies went really well. Items were shipped well and better than described. They were Ebay purchases so the price was good too. My one Lukie purchase was a huge disappointment. Bought 25 SNES game lot shipped across the country with almost no padding. (Looks like this PS3 was shipped poorly too) Had a copy of Mario kart arrive in pieces. Their response was essentially "We shipped it fine, returns are not allowed."
8:21 thats actually normal, the PS3 sometimes glitches if you played an older game. My PS3 completly freaked out when I tried to play tomb raider 1 on it
they should be explicitly listing what the refurbish process is so that no one is confused or expects something like replaced thermal paste when that is not what refurbishment means to them.
For $500 they should have completed overhauled it with a brand new more efficient fan, new thermal paste and cleaned every thing inside and out. It looks like they wiped the outside with with like Clorox wipes or something. Hope you can get your money back.
I got a backwards compatible one for £100 with a bunch of games, took it to my local tech shop, did a check up and a refurbishment for £40, took it home now it’s a gaming beast, and an emulation machine
To be fair, its common place when you refurbish a console, to place back the warranty sticker after you are done, if nothing else for aestetic purposes. I've done a few fat ps3s including my own, using achohol to temporary remove the stickyness of the warranty sticker and placed it back after I screwed everything back together. Also non refubished backwards compatibles cost around $300-$330 currently. I've been keeping my eye out for one myself cause i need to test my ps2 inventory. You're lucky if you get it for under $250. That being said, this is DKoldies.
Hey, what did you do to screen cap your ps3? I tried using my pci elgato hd60 Pro and it doesn't work because it doesn't support HDCP which is what the ps3 uses
I have bought games from Lukie Games over the years and never have had a issue. I haven’t bought a console from them but this looks a lot better than DK Oldies.
Honestly I don't bother to buy "refurbished" consoles from anywhere but I do buy games quite often from lukie games and they're good for that aspect anyway alot of the time when getting games that come in jewel cases they'll give you a new case only a few ps1 games I've ever got from them didn't come with an new jewel case.
Getting an OEM DualShock 3 in near mint condition is something to brag about, I envy you for that. But yeah, the retro store saga of bullshitting it's customers is getting ridiculous. You'd think with all the crap DKOldies has gotten, these other businesses would think "we have the opportunity to do this right!", and truly bank on that.
What’re our thoughts on this $500 PS3 console? 🧐

@@ThrashBandicoot666 oh it is its very helpful when they do vids like this but i just think that with the dkoldies situation the people harassing them are gonna jump on lukie games and do the same thing idk maybe im overthinking
I get your videos recommended to me 20 minutes after you upload but anyone else on my subscription list gotta wait a minimum of 2-6 business weeks
I've bought a lot of games and accessories from Lukie Games and have been quite happy... I'm surprised that console was in that condition.
I saw a video from the Retro Gaming Guy where he bought an OG Xbox from Lukie games and it showed up almost pristine. I wonder what the deal was here.
Those ps2 component cables are a lot more valuable than a generic hdmi cable.
I remember getting a PS4 game from them. Got an official disc and cover but they used a blu-ray case lol.
Yeah it seems the games are always fine compared to the consoles from these companies.
btw a millimeter of dust is not dirty :o
that is much less than my last 10 computers
It’s just crazy… you’d think after hearing about all this drama with Dkoldies and whatnot and seeing who placed the order they would at least attempt to make it good lmao
my only experience with lukiegames is buying games and they have all been great, sad to see they don’t give their consoles the same respect
I actually bought two consoles from them--a Gamecube that lasted quite a while, and a Super Nintendo when I first got to college and it worked for about a day. I'm actually going to buy a PS2 from them.
Yeah I just ordered a $2 game gear game from them off ebay, hopefully it's good 😅
@@theragnarokmachine2251 . Buy elsewhere. You bought a Snes from them and it lasted a day and you want to buy more ? Come on bro
Yeah samee I used to use them back then , I once bought a n64 from em back then and it was all good too but that was way back then so who knows how things are now
pirate your games
Another terrible product from one of these game stores, they’re all parasite resellers preying on people’s nostalgia
Glad you kept that little blooper in the beginning of the video 😂
Calling them refurbished and not refurbishing them is fraud.
For us normies could you do a video applying new thermal paste? Your videos are amazing!
For ps3 consoles you will usually have to delid as well…
I’ve been wiping my pause personal data lol nice little edit there
Dk oldies selling ps2 games for $50-60. Bruh...
Refurbished for 500$ Here in the Philippines you can get one in a good working condition for about 80$, complete with the original box
From dk- NOPE
That DeleteMe ad was so slick, well done! 😂
It’s very clean and it’s better then dkscammys. Even tho there’s dust I still think it’s clean
was it polishing fluid? or something like t hat?
500 bucks? FB marketplace got me one, mint, for 160 bucks. 80 gig fat BTW.
I have that AV/HDMI problem with my PS3s and Ps4, multiple different monitors too I cant understand why it happens.
NGL Jacob your transition from a segment of the video into a paid sponsor is legendary 🤣
Why did your paper that came with it look like that? i've ordered plenty of times console and games from them never looked like that.
Speaking of wiping, I’ve been wiping my shoes at the front door
I'm glad you guys are calling these companies out.
Do a lap on Motorstorm & see if the console overheats. I bought the same BC model from them and it overheats and shuts down if you play games that are too graphically intensive.
If the air is hot does that mean the thermal paste is working? I don't get what he means when he says lukewarm.
Isn’t CECH-A01 the backwards compatible too? I have the A01 and I can play ps1-ps3 games on it
The background images are just , muah chef’s kiss
I would be really disappointed to receive that after paying 500. I have limited interaction with Lukie and DK oldies. My 2 purchases from DK oldies went really well. Items were shipped well and better than described. They were Ebay purchases so the price was good too. My one Lukie purchase was a huge disappointment. Bought 25 SNES game lot shipped across the country with almost no padding. (Looks like this PS3 was shipped poorly too) Had a copy of Mario kart arrive in pieces. Their response was essentially "We shipped it fine, returns are not allowed."
Weird they let me do returns whenever I have an issue 🤷♂️
8:21 thats actually normal, the PS3 sometimes glitches if you played an older game. My PS3 completly freaked out when I tried to play tomb raider 1 on it
they should be explicitly listing what the refurbish process is so that no one is confused or expects something like replaced thermal paste when that is not what refurbishment means to them.
You'd think for $500, you'd at least get "ok" packaging, that thing was bouncing all over in that box.
Pre 2019 I was buying old games and consoles for dirt cheap. Its crazy just how much people are charging now a days.
DK Oldies: We're THEE Scammers
Lukie: Hold My Beer
Hey, what did you do to screen cap your ps3?
I tried using my pci elgato hd60 Pro and it doesn't work because it doesn't support HDCP which is what the ps3 uses
Looks like they used a nonalcoholic hand wipe to wipe it down. Usually it has hand lotion of sorts added to soft the hands.
I have bought games from Lukie Games over the years and never have had a issue. I haven’t bought a console from them but this looks a lot better than DK Oldies.
For 500 the console should be pristine
still not refurbished tho
Did you de lid the chips after the video or no?
They should fuse and become Dukie Games
Honestly I don't bother to buy "refurbished" consoles from anywhere but I do buy games quite often from lukie games and they're good for that aspect anyway alot of the time when getting games that come in jewel cases they'll give you a new case only a few ps1 games I've ever got from them didn't come with an new jewel case.
Your wallpaper bro! 😂🤣 love it!
For that price is there a reason they don't put a 500 or 1tb HDD in it? Just for "official" sake? And because they might have to update firmware?
Getting an OEM DualShock 3 in near mint condition is something to brag about, I envy you for that. But yeah, the retro store saga of bullshitting it's customers is getting ridiculous. You'd think with all the crap DKOldies has gotten, these other businesses would think "we have the opportunity to do this right!", and truly bank on that.
Keep exposing these scam companies. Saved me from buying from DKoldies and now I know another place to avoid.
DKOldies: “Finally, a worthy opponent. Our battle will be legendary!”
bruh that meme at background on your monitor :DDDDDD
8:34 exactly how I play fighting games
