But stories like this are always on the back of my mind when I do venture far from home unaccompanied. Poor Irene didn’t stand a chance against these opportunist scoundrels.

I don't know if the times we live in are more crime ridden than in past centuries, but if something this hideous could happen in the "good old days," they can certainly happen today.

I also have pepper spray and a kubotan on me. If it's dark I have a flashlight too. I stop in public places as I feel it's safer. Always vigilant of my surroundings and other people.

The poor little lass. All she wanted was a bit of summer holiday when she was finally old enough to have some Independence and enjoy being young and free of encumbrances in the summer by the seaside. Literally all she wanted and she was someone who probably always did everything right and wouldn't hurt another living being. I always hate it when you know the story involves someone's last moments being of sudden inexplicable brutality, pain and absolute terror like you and I have likely never known.

In a way Irene was just ANOTHER victim of WW 1 -- so many young men were killed that many young women never had a chance to get married. Irene probably went to the popular resort in hopes of meeting a nice young man -- it was just her rotten luck to meet this despicable duo. Ironically, she probably felt safer walking with TWO men than she would have with ONE -- particularly since one of them was somewhat older and seemed to have given the impression of respectability. It's a very sad story -- she was so young and trusting, and such a beautiful girl.

A Michigan icu nurse here. Recovering from working 27 hours this weekend, the latest surge going on. FYI, when the news announced hospital is at 98%, this means there are 1-4 beds left until someone else either gets better( likely when I'm in my usual neuro trauma icu) or someone dies(almost always in the covid icu). I've found myself surveying the unit im working and letting the supervisor know that I'll have another bed 'soon'. Oh the times we live in.

I still amazes me how quickly these crimes are brought to Court and the executions carried out. Less than six months from the murder in this case. Whilst where I live (Australia) no longer has the death penalty, it can take two to four years for a case in the County or Supreme Courts to be heard. That partly results from more serious crimes are being solved, suspects charged, etc. I am certain, modern technology helps catch a higher percentage of offenders. But I still think that we need more courts to cater for a growing population. I certainly think we need to get back to six months or less between charging someone and a trial...

For every QC raking in the cash by stringing out a case, there are Court officials, prosecutors, clerks, guards, etc costing the State/Commonwealth to keep the place running. I have a feeling Irene was a feminist and was brave and fought hard during her attack. The men most likely killed her because she was no shrinking violet. I also find it strange that a beach was empty and no witnesses were around at the time of her murder. 330-5 seems like a time when the beach would be crowded still. Such a lovely young brave woman. Two items not mentioned. The only photo of Irene was that of her in an evening dress. Police created three other photos of her with clothing that was worn when she had been murdered, (which helped witnesses identify her, since she wasn't wearing that evening dress to the beach). Also, a 15-year-old girl was employed to follow these suspects and noted their activities in detail. This helped detectives to identify their movements, their attempt to set up a false alibi, and their criminal behaviour, (including threats to other women). Would you consider covering a case where the suspect was found guilty then posthumously cleared of the crime?
Another great presentation of case today, I love the way that you discuss the social history of the times as it puts situations in context and brings the victim back to being a real person with hopes and dreams, after all it is the victim who should be remembered.

One of the good things about the 18th, 19th,and early 20 century they didn't play with the death penalty death was within a few days months of being found guilty..

@@janetpendlebury6808 Exactly. And if it's such an effective deterrent why do we still have so many people committing violent crimes, specifically rape and murder? It's viscerally satisfying, but is it really serving the intended purpose of stopping more crime in the future? Obviously not when you look at the world we are living in 100 years after Irene's tragic death.

Oh, the poor lass and her family! As for the wretches who took Irene’s life, they got what they deserved. Thank you, BC, for another brilliant case. Scotland Yard was fast on this one and did well. The tragedy is that that this still happens. Evil doesn’t go away. Travel in pairs, that’s what we’ve taught our daughters.
