For Southerners, Cracker Barrel is the mass produced version of the food you would eat at Granny’s house. It’s good, but it’s a pale imitation of the homemade stuff. That being said, it’s a great place to stop and have a decent meal on long road trips.

Let you guys in on a little secret---Cracker Barrel is a step above middle of the road as classic American diners go, but the REAL diner experience is best experienced at a non chain restaurant (or at most, a small local chain.) Mom and pop diners (as they're called, that or greasy spoon) can be hit or miss, but when they hit, they're usually some of the best classic American food you'll ever have.

If you have fried okra and it's still slimy, it's cooked wrong. Okra should be crunchy like popcorn. I use just cornmeal when battering my okra. Nothing else. Coat in cornmea, then fry until crispy. No slime at all. Most restaurants cook their okra like Cracker Barrel, and thats just plain wrong.

I'm so glad you guys used the butter on the pancakes. I've seen so many Brits just eat pancakes with syrup but the butter cuts into the sweetness and balances it out. Corn muffins or cornbread are generally savory in the south. I had some made by someone from Illinois who used sugar when I was a kid and it was so strange to me because I'd only ever had savory cornbread. Meatloaf and mashed potatoes are a good comfort food. Most people either love it or hate it. My go to at Cracker Barrel is their blueberry pancakes. You were just a few hours south of where I live in Louisville, KY. You should come up here sometime around Derby (1st Saturday in May). We have a loads of festival events the week or so leading to the event and lots of out of town visitors from all over. We're also a foodie town so you can find lots of great restaurants to try.

I am a 64 year old American man, born and raised in Peoria Illinois, and I have never been to a Cracker Barrel in my life. I have one about 10 miles from me, I have just never been there.
You put butter on cornbread, you can dip it if you want, it's a free country, but I always eat my cornbread with butter on it, I cut it in half and put the butter in the middle of it.
That is ketchup on the meatloaf, and you need to put some extra salt on the meatloaf at the table, it always needs extra salt, that makes it even better. Meatloaf can be good or bad, it depends on who makes it, and how you cook it. My parents used to cook meatloaf on a Weber grill over charcoal and it was amazing, because it put a smoke flavor in it, the best I ever had. And I also had meatloaf places that was so bad I could not eat it.
I hate OKRA. They do not season the chicken, all the seasoning is in the breading.
I always eat a biscuit with butter and jelly on it.
I have never put jelly on cornbread in my life, only butter.
Not a fan of peach cobbler, I would rather have dutch apple pie with vanilla ice cream, some people call it apple crunch pie.

Okra is a seed pod cut into coins. I personally love it. The seed are crunchy and coated in a lovely slime called mucilage 😂 its apparently great for digestion and seed germination, but it's like someone sneezed in your mouth. When cooked down it acts as a thickener in soups and stews, famously variations of gumbo.

@@thebritstryGumbo is thickened in one of two ways. Okra or File (pronounced fee lay ) powder. You use one or the other. If you use both your gumbo will turn into a brick. LOL Once upon a time okra was used when in season and File used in the off season.
On another note, not all white gravy is made with sausage. On chicken fried steak it is normally just a cream gravy. Equal parts fat and flour are mixed and heated forming a Roux. It is not cooked long to keep the flavor light and milk (aka cream) is mixed in along with salt and pepper. While this and sausage gravy are similar they tend to have different flavors as sausage gravy tends to use the sausage drippings as the fat component where cream gravy tends to use butter as its fat component.
Meatloaf can be bland or it can be beautiful. It is part of another simple meal you can whip up at home. There are thousands of recipes on how to make it. I like to mix some lipton onion soup mix into the meat before cooking. While the loaf is in the oven, you have plenty of time to boil some potatoes and turn them into mashed potatoes, heat up some green beans and then pull the loaf out of the oven. Pull it out of the pan and sit it on a board to cool a bit. While that is going on mix some butter and sliced mushrooms in a pan and get them soft. Add in the drippings from the pan and sprinkle in some flour. Cook the mixture until it is a light brown then add in some beef stock and mix well. Bring to a boil and now you have Meatloaf and mashed potatoes with brown mushroom gravy.

@@geegs120No matter the sauce or gravy it comes down to just 2 things. The liquid and the thickener. Everything else is just a variation of the two.
A roux is a thickening agent. It uses the starch in flour to do the thickening. By mixing equal parts fat and flour you get a mixture that you can "cook" the raw flavor of the flour out. From there it is a choice Thickening power vs flavor. The lighter the roux the more it will thicken, and the darker the roux the more flavor it will impart but thicken less.
      Corn starch is another thickener.
The true flavor comes from the liquid. You could thicken some beef stock for a basic brown gravy and same goes for chicken, vegetable or turkey stock.
But the drippings are where the true flavor is at.
Cook some basic seasoned hamburger patties in a pan and when they are done, toss in some onions, and mushrooms etc then add some butter to smooth out the fat. Sprinkle in some flour and cook the chunky roux to a nice light brown, add in some red wine. Bring to a boil and simmer.
Try the same thing with all kinds of meats that you are cooking and find out what you like.

Cracker Barrel is the only place I ever consider ordering pancakes at a restaurant. There are places that have good pancakes, but CB is one of the only places that serves natural syrup rather than pancake syrup which is maple flavored corn syrup. That's why the syrup was so thin. The best way to have pancakes (imho) is with pure maple syrup. CB's is a combinations of pure maple syrup that has been cut with natural cane syrup. Not as good as straight pure maple syrup, but still way better than what most places serve.

If you time your trip for late May, Copper River salmon is flown down from Alaska, it’s quite expensive but definitely worth it. It’s such a big deal the local news channel usually covers the arrival of the special Alaska Airlines plane making the first delivery. Then there’s the fruit, we are the ”apple state”, there’s an incredible variety of apples, plus apricots, sweet cherries, especially the Rainier cherries, berries like strawberries, blackberries, Marion berries, huckleberries and raspberries. I despise okra. Growing up I tolerated it in gumbo because it was always in gumbo but yuck. You have to look at cornbread as a conveyance for a great many things savory and sweet. If there's dipping sauce then you dip it and you don't drizzle it on everything else within the main basket.

You two are adorable! You'd make a true Southern cook very happy. They would watch you take every single bite of food. The watching is done out of care, They want to make sure that you're happy with your meal. If you have a favorite, they will always remember. Your favorites will be served if you visit or on certain occasions (tough times, special occasions, or if they have extra food).

I live in Alabama and love going to Cracker Barrel. One of my friends visited from Connecticut and had never been to Cracker Barrel, so we had lunch there and she really enjoyed the food and was surprised by how little it costs.
I treated myself to a weekend in a hotel last New Year's Eve and day, and did nothing but relax, watch "The Twilight Zone" marathon, some classic movies, and had my meals delivered from Cracker Barrel. I was one happy girl.🙂
I love the chicken and dumplings!

If you liked the blackberry jelly you can also make the cobbler out of blackberries (whole fruit)as well. The pankcakes can be topped with fruits and whipped cream. Then wrapped over for a different flavor choice.

I grew up in a southern home with a mom who made food from scratch each Sunday. I remember Cracker Barrel became really big in the 90’s where we lived so we had to try them out. My parents were mad that they paid for that food. We could’ve had WAY better at home. 30 years later, I find that I appreciate CB more after my mom passed. I can cook southern and better than CB but since it’s only me it’s just cheaper and more efficient to satisfy a yearly craving there instead of trying to cook it on my own. Plus, I do enjoy their gift shop and rocking chairs 😂

Great video! I am now subscribed. As a southerner, I would like to point out that country fried steak is traditionally eaten completely smothered in the sawmill (white) gravy. Try it that way next time. Chicken fried chicken is also meant to be completely smothered in sawmill gravy. Also, goes on corn muffins. Never jelly or preserves. I would love to see you react to a real, home-cooked southern meal at someone’s home!

Enjoyed both of your reactions.❤ I loved your trip to New Orleans, my hometown, and I shared it with family.
As others have said, and as you know, home cooking can differ from restaurants. Crackle Barrel is popular and we enjoy it.
Peach Cobbler usually has dumplings cooked in peach slices and sweet peach juice, then top with pasty dumplings on top and bake. No hard topping.
Centuries ago, Africans brought okra to New Orleans and the African cooks used it in our gumbo, and in tomato and okra smothern with onions and many other dishes. We love okra. Others have written how to cook slime out.
My mother's meatloaf was half beef and half pork. It was very moist with bread soaked in milk, eggs, and a lot of seasoning.
    Looking forward to next video.
