    Something I hear a lot is "Gravy here is like this white gravy." I want to make sure that it's clear that we do have other gravy. We do have turkey gravy, chicken gravy, brown mushroom gravy, beef gravy, au jus, and others, I'm sure.
    It's just that the gravy served with Biscuits and Gravy is sausage gravy which is white.

    County gravy, brown gravy, chicken gravy, sausage gravy etc etc, we have multiple gravies. And typically American restaurants have to go cups as well as to go boxes so you could've got your drink and took it with you even if you couldn't finish it. Pro tip, at the end of your meal get your refill but ask for it to go.

    American gravy is the same brown gravy as you would have on turkey or potatoes or pot roast. The white sausage gravy is specific to biscuits or chicken fried steak or chicken. It's from the south but can be had in places across the country.

      I think your right if it's beef gravy, however as we make gravy from the meat drippings, it varies depending on the meat course. One might have beef, chicken, turkey and pork gravy as well. Of course, they all go great on mashed potatoes!

    Correction on your assumption about sauces and gravies: There are many types of gravy styles available in America. It depends on the dish. The "white" gravy is a specific type of gravy for certain dishes.

    American biscuits are similar to scones except scones has more sugar, it has flavoring (such as vanilla) and it has eggs. American biscuits almost never have eggs and it definitely doesn’t have flavorings and has a less sugar.
    American biscuits are lighter in texture if it’s done right where as scones are dense.

    While it is tempting to assign the size of glasses of orange juice in America to our obsession with large portions, the real reason is that America produces a plethora of oranges which makes the cost of juice relatively low. England must import oranges from southern Spain which makes their cost of juice relatively high.

    One thing to note about those stores is that Cracker Barrel sells a lot of regional sodas that you can't get unless you're in those regions. They also sell a lot of old fashioned candy that is harder to find. There are over 650 locations in at least 40 states, most of the locations are in the eastern half of the country so if you're visiting America in the central or eastern time zones you'll likely not be too far from one of them.

    "Gravy over here is white..."
    No. No. No. Gravies are any sauces made from meat drippings. Sausage or "country" gravy is made from sausage drippings and is white because milk is added instead of stock. Most gravies are some shade of brown as they start with a meat dripping roux and stock is added.

    • @brianwalker5937
      @brianwalker5937 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      yes, it is funny how someone sees white gravy and assume all gravy is white. I would argue that other than the south if you say gravy, you think exactly what the people of the UK think - thickened brown sauce made from pan drippings (oh the south has it too). Gravy is simply a thickened sauce. What I call breakfast gravy (aka sausage gravy) is basically a bechamel (white sauce made with roux and milk) with sausage meat in it. Heck in parts of the east coast if you say you want gravy, you get a thick tomato sauce. So gravy has a wide variety of flavors and colors and simply refers to a thickened sauce. But to confuse matters more not all thickened sauces are gravy because you could be looking at a glaze. Basically, it doesn't matter what it is called. If it is your first time seeing something and the menu does not describe it, ask the server; they will most likely be able to describe it in terms you understand or even bring you a small sample of it (although a sample of sausage gravy is best when it accompanies meat and bread imo).
