Hi! I was born and raised in Philadelphia. The Reading Terminal has so many good food places. Sweet Potato pie is a southern pie typically and also enjoyed in Black American homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas. It can be served with whipped topping. The equivalent for others is the pumpkin pie.
The Reading Terminal is truly a gem for food lovers. Sweet potato pie is such a comforting classic, especially during the holidays! We have just tried Pumpkin pie in our video Uploading tomorrow where we tried making a thanksgiving dinner😊Thanks for watching

The Reading terminal is one of our favorite places with all of its mouth watering cuisine. My youngest son and I love scrapple ( with ketchup). I love when people ask me what part of the pig is scrapple, I tell them it’s everything but the oink!😅
Scrapple is every leftover part of the pig except the Oink, we would have it with a touch of King's Syrup. Apple Dumpling is a very traditional PA Dutch dessert. Mmm Bacon as far as the eye can see! Andrew you got Sweet Potato Pie right it is a custard base mixed with whipped Sweet Potato, similar to pumpkin pie. PA is the pretzel capital of the USA. If you ever make it back to Lancaster PA stop by Central Market, it's oldest continuously run farmers market in the USA, smaller but nice. Thanks for the video I enjoy the content.
Thanks for sharing your insights! Scrapple and apple dumplings truly showcase the deliciousness of PA Dutch cuisine. I appreciate your recommendations for Central Market-sounds like a must-visit!

Bacon jam, is more meat than jam. You can get sweet potato year round, eat it hot , cold, room temperature, whichever you prefer. Mustard is the condiment for soft pretzels.
My Mother & Grandma served scrapple occasionally & my family loves it! Try putting just a few drops of syrup on it... sooooo good! There is a good bit of PA Dutch influence in how we were taught to cook and the recipes that were handed down to us. Delicious! Hope you get a chance to enjoy more!
So awesome to see you two enjoying the same places that I frequent. I am a carpenter in the city, and when I work close to reading terminal market I go to the Dutch eating place without fail. It is as good as advertised.
RTM is truly a treasure. Sooooo much good food. So glad you guys went. The one place I wish you would have tried is DiNic's. They have one of the best pork sandwiches EVER. The best part is....hopefully you will both go back soon! Cheers!
Another description of scrapple is "a very meaty polenta". It's traditionally made when an extended family gathers for a "butchering" in the fall. After all the larger pieces are removed along with whatever portions are going to be used for sausage, the leftover "bits" are boiled with cornmeal until the mixture starts to thicken. That is poured into loaf pans and allowed to congeal (it can be stored in a fridge for a week or two or frozen). When you're ready to eat it, you slice the loaf and fry/saute it as you had it, so that it's crisp on the outside or hot and creamy on the inside. As crisp as yours looked, though, it may have been deep fried for quicker cooking with less fussing over.
It's the homemade bread they make for everything. Also, sweet potato or pumpkin pie is year-round, and Cool Whip topping from the supermarket is what we use to top it, or a dispenser can of real whipoed cream.
Sweet potato pie can be made year round. You can either oven roast a raw sweet potato or buy canned sweet potatoes already cooked. Add the egg, condensed milk and spices and pour into a pie shell and bake it yourself. Same basic recipe as pumpkin pie and add whatever spices you like to it.
Your comment about the jelly donut brought something to my mind. I'm always hearing Brits call our jelly, 'jam', when we have both jelly and jam. I realize that you call gelatin, 'jelly' which is what we more commonly call Jell-O due to brand dominance, but in America, jam and jelly are two different things. The basic difference of course is that jam is made from crushed fruit while jelly is made from fruit juice. So when I see Brits use jam for jelly I start to wonder if they even sell what we call jelly over there. Living in America as long as you have, I'm sure you've seen jam, jelly, marmalade, and preserves all on the shelves (usually next to the peanut butter) in supermarkets, but I wonder what they sell in Britain when so many people immediately think our jelly is their jam.
Unintended word play, as well as unintended puns, seem to come naturally for me. I never thought of it any other way until reading your comment and then reading it out loud.
Never Forget butter makes everything better, at least that's what my German Husband says. I truly enjoy Your channel Lovely content. Love From Michigan and it's a beautiful evening ❤❤
I have so much to say!!! I love Reading Terminal. But for your questions: Sweet Potato pie, can be eaten at any temperature. It’s personal preference, cold, room temperature and warm from the oven. The soft pretzels, best dip is mustard or cheese. The breakfast sandwich looked amazing. I will need to try that the next time I go. Enjoy our city, I’ve enjoyed your video! ❤
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Reading Terminal has so much to offer, and it’s great to hear you love it as much as I do. we can't wait to revisit in the future
I don’t think you guys still don’t understand “jelly and jello”. Jello is a brand name of a gelatin dessert but everyone calls all gelatin desserts Jello. Preservatives has whole pieces of fruit in a jam like spread. Jam has small pieces of fruit in a spread and jelly is like a jam with NO PIECES OF FRUIT. You get the flavor without the pieces of fruit. It’s that simple.😊
As someone who lives within 30 minutes of the Reading Terminal Market and < an hour from PA Dutch country (the Amish), their food is hearty to say the least. Perhaps bc many are farmers performing heavy labor every single day.

My wife in her attempted vegetarian phase (don't let her see this or she'll slug me) 25 years ago would still eat Scrapple. It had to be really thin and super crispy. I used to tease her that she was the only vegetarian that would even look at Scrapple yet alone eat it. As we were watching you stroll around Reading Terminal (most people from Philadelphia drop the word market from the name) We kept saying to each other "Why haven't they gone to Bassets Ice Cream?" Thank you for settling our frazzled minds. Before they rebuilt the section near Bassets there was a long marble counter that had plastic cups in a stack near a water tap. The water was icy cold and free. Some folks swore it was the best tasting water in the entire city of Philadelphia. If you've ever heard of Auntie Anne's Pretzels, they are in most transportation hubs across the USA, they began in a small farmers market in the outskirts of Philadelphia called Booths Corner. My wife 40 years ago was offered one of the first franchises for Auntie Anne's but her ex-husband didn't think it would make any money. Thanks for letting two former Philadelphians relive a place that we fondly shared many an ice cream cone back in the day. Is this the final Philadelphia video in the series or will we be treated to even more?
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful memories! We had a great time in Philadelphia and the Reading terminal market. We would love to go back and spend some more time there. Thanks for watching 😊
Hey there Y'all great video from the Reading Terminal Market. In my opinion, Sweet Tator Pie can be eaten warm or cold, and with ice cream or Whipped crea, and you can enjoy the pies year around. I'm glad y'all had such a great time in Philly.
Cincinnati has many similar foods. Instead of mustard, our soft pretzels are served with beer cheese. It's a staple appetizer at many restaurants. Bacon jam is popular on sandwiches and in dishes. Pumpkin Pie is in season right now. Pumpkin and Sweet Potato Pie usually come with a dollop of whipped cream. Schnecken a sweet buttery pastry made by our Busken Bakery. We also have Cincinnati Chili (Skyline is my fave) Montgomery Inn BBQ, Cincinnati's favorite local pizza, LaRosa's, Graeter's Icecream (I like Mocha Coffee) and a malted milkshake from UDF and Grippos potato chips!
As a current resident of Florida, the grocery stores have sweet potato pie year round. Every so often I will see Patty LaBell's pie as well. I usually have whipped cream on mine served cool.
scrapple is a pork version of white pudding/black pudding but they use corn meal instead of oats. Put some ketchup on it.... yumm. Also the Maple Bacon donut from Beilers is my fave. Perfectly sweet and salty with that hint of smoke.
I just want you to know i read some of your responses and you are a very nice sweet person. I think you were raised right and well loved throughout your life. ❤🙏🏻👍🏻
Nice to see you guys visited my city of Philadelphia! The Reading Terminal is a treasure! Next time you go try DiNic’s roast pork sandwich! It’s the true official sandwich of Philadelphia!
You CAN get sweet potato pie year round. It can be eaten hot or cold. It is usually served with vanilla ice cream oir caramel sauce (at least where I am just outside of Philly). Hope you enjoyed your time at the market.
Thank you for your comment! we definitely enjoyed our time at the market, and I couldn’t agree more about sweet potato pie it was delicious! ice cream and caramel sauce sounds like a great twist!
As i mentioned before if you ever come back to Pennsylvania. Just 30 minutes north is New Hope Pennsylvania and Peddlers Village, Washington's crossing small town and village, you will feel like you are in the English countryside. Very Historical with beautiful architecture, hundreds of shops, restaurants and antique markets all along the Delaware river. You will absolutely love it. Very colonial and Victorian areas when the Brits controlled the area and the revolution. ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻👍🏻
I was very happy to see you got the apple dumpling. My fav way to have it is warm with heavy cream. It creates this rich and sweet sauce with the apple and brown sugar. It is a perfect thing. Love the Reading Terminal Market!
Keep up the amazing food adventures you two. Love the videos. Always entertaining and informative about the other parts of the U.S. that I have yet to visit and experience.
Reading Term is absolutely classic. so many great places to grab food, several high quality chocolate or bakeries, a lot of different cuisines available (there should be a greek place, a gyro place, a cajun place, amish food, southern bbq...just an insane variety). Beiler's Donuts is a classic. Also, PA Libations sells all sorts of alcohol made in PA, and offer samples to help you find the exact right bottle. There's a couple cookie stalls (your biscuits, basically) that are to die for. and Market Bakery not only has the best breakfast sandwiches (Early Bird is my favorite: egg, cheese, bacon, roast peppers and pesto on any kind of bread they have...i go for a bagel), but they also sell products from a lot of smaller bakeries from the city that can't afford/can't get a stall at Reading Term.
Some people put whip cream on their sweet potato pie here. It’s generally an autumn thing served at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sweet potatoes are eaten baked, and fried like French fries. Also casseroles at Thanksgiving and Christmas as well.
I just found them this week and am bing watching their videos! I love how they are so excited by the food they try. And it was hilarious watching them put all the condiments on the cheesesteaks. They had no idea what to do. Please next time no cheez whiz. It’s so gross. American or Cooper sharp is the best. You could also try a pizza steak with provolone. That is my favorite
Glad you got to try the scrapple. Many people are put off when they read or ask what the ingredients is. And they way you described it being cook is the perfect way. Crispy outside, mushy center. Most people the cook on this egg as "sunny side up" but we call them "dippy eggs". But dip your toast into the egg yolk, and the yolk just pours all over the plate. That is when Scrapple comes in. Cut a piece off and clean up some of the yolk with the scrapple and enjoy!!!
Thank you for the heads up! I appreciate the recommendation-I'll definitely check it out on my next visit! John's Roast pork was delicious, how does this compare?
Flavor and texture wise, sweet potato pie is most like pumpkin pie. Whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream are both a good accompaniment. Traditionally, pumpkin is made around the holidays, but I think sweet potato is year round?
Thank you for this great review, it was fantastic. You two are so much fun to watch, but I really wanted to jump through the computer and join you. All the food looked very good.
@thebritstry. Sweet potato buy is mostly around during the fall and winter months for the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Its good hot or cold. I eat mine hot with vanilla ice cream and a glass of egg nog. Pretezels are good with spicy mustard and get them with cheese dip or covered in melted cheese
You can get Sweet Potato pie year-round but it's typically eaten during the holiday season (Thanksgiving and Christmas). Also, it should be eaten warm with a dollop of vanilla ice cream.
Great culinary exploration at Reading Terminal Market! I am so happy you liked the Scrapple. I was brought up putting syrup on it. It doesn't have to be real maple syrup. The egg combo with the scrapple works too! Very interesting point about a similarity to haggis ( I have never tried it but I have tried black pudding however!) Love you guys!
We really appreciate your comment! It’s wonderful to hear about your experiences with scrapple and black pudding. We wouldn't have thought to add syrup, now we want to try it😋
A lot of Americans don't like scrapple, but if you grew up in the South you probably had it a lot. I love it myself. Sweet Potato Pie is a desert, available year round (not hard to make) and eaten cold and mainly on it's own but nobody is going to call the cops on you if you have it with some ice cream. I eat my soft pretzels plain but in Philly they like to put mustard on it.
I’m so glad I found your channel! You’re such a sweet pair and I love seeing you in Philly. Dinics brisket sandwich and Hershel’s pastrami are my favorite stops.
You both are an absolute joy to watch! I love your passion for food. I live in New Jersey, and we can find sweet potato pie all year round. I like to put whipped cream on it. 😊
I love watching you two. I'm so happy to see you here in the city! I hope you get to stop in China Town, too! Each neighborhood has different ethnic restaurants. You'll find Polish food in one, Russian food in another, South American food in another, etc. This city truly is a mixing pot of people and their amazing foods
Nothing like Amish cooking 😂 . Glad you did a partial tour. If you go back, you have to hit up Herschel's Deli and DiNic Roast Pork (I know you've had one, but DiNic's is superior and you need it with broccoli rabe and and long hots [hot peppers] ) . I see you made it to Mullers but didn't get to Termini's, right across the aisle. And if you go back to Beiler's you can get shoo fly pie (my fave). And breakfast at the Down Home Diner is always a treat. Bonus points for showing my favorite butcher's!

Thanks for the tips! Still dreaming about those Preztels and bacon jam sandwiches!!
Ya gotta dip your pretzel in melted cheese ! ❤ OMG ! 😋
We used to miss mustard with Italian Dressing for our hard pretzels, very good.
Those weren't real Philadelphia pretzels, they have to get those next time.
My favorite place in Philly!! Crispy scrapple with maple syrup 😋 👍
That's awesome! Scrapple with maple syrup is such a unique combo. Philly has some amazing food spots, for sure!
Yaaasss for maple syrup! Mix the salty with the sweet 🤤
Thanks for the tip! We would definitely love to try scrapple with syrup next time
Watching this before breakfast is lethal! LOL!! That food looks So Good! Glad to see a couple who enjoy food!
Yeah we know that feeling! Editing these videos can be difficult without snacking
So awesome to see you two enjoying the same places that I frequent. I am a carpenter in the city, and when I work close to reading terminal market I go to the Dutch eating place without fail. It is as good as advertised.
So jealous! We loved it
Yayyy!! You’re in my neighborhood! Enjoy!
We had an amazing time in Philadelphia, can't wait to revisit again in the future. Thanks for watching!!
RTM is truly a treasure. Sooooo much good food. So glad you guys went. The one place I wish you would have tried is DiNic's. They have one of the best pork sandwiches EVER. The best part is....hopefully you will both go back soon! Cheers!
Thanks for the recommendation! DiNic's sounds delicious, and it gives us a great excuse to revisit in the future. Thanks for watching.
I'm from Delaware and Reading Terminal Market is a must when visiting Philly.
It was so good 😊 thank you for watching
I was to the Reading termination market once and was simply amazed.
It’s so good! Highly recommend it 😊
Another description of scrapple is "a very meaty polenta".
I really enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing.❤
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching😊
Don't forget to eat your way through Hershey!!!❤🎉
Thank you for watching
@@thebritstrywe all know how much the British love Hershey Chocolate lol 😂 actually the whole UK. Including Ireland, Scotland, and Wales
It's the homemade bread they make for everything. Also, sweet potato or pumpkin pie is year-round, and Cool Whip topping from the supermarket is what we use to top it, or a dispenser can of real whipoed cream.
Thanks for the info! it was delicious
@thebritstry I love your show 💕
Sweet potato pie can be made year round. You can either oven roast a raw sweet potato or buy canned sweet potatoes already cooked. Add the egg, condensed milk and spices and pour into a pie shell and bake it yourself. Same basic recipe as pumpkin pie and add whatever spices you like to it.
Thank you for sharing the information! and Thanks for watching
No, sir. You don't "add whatever". All spices don't blend with all foods.
I got to the end of your post & immediately LOL’d - ‘our jelly is their jam’ 😂
Well done on unintended word play!
So True! Butter does make most things better.. Congratulations on finding your soulmate. Have a great evening
So Jealous!! your right it's definitely filling and hearty. Thanks for watching
@@thebritstry Love all your videos, btw! Reminds me of my relationship w/my wife of 26 years. 😁
You 2 are really traveling around USA.
Trying our best to see everywhere! let us know where you recommend we should visit in the future. Thanks for watching
@ I live 20 minutes from Manhattan NYC. But you should go to New England Maine. Vermont Rhode Island Mass
@@thebritstry Check out steamed crabs and crab cakes in Baltimore, Maryland. Pit Beef sandwiches are another Baltimore specialty. If you are ever in DC, check out Ethiopian food. There are dozens of restaurants since DC has a large Ethiopian population.
Yes, you can find all the sweet potato pies you'll ever want down south. I had no idea the northern Yankees had it.
It's amazing how regional specialties can surprise us! Sweet potato pie is definitely a delightful treat, no matter where you find it.
Of course the North has it ! So you’ve probably never knew about THE GREAT MIGRATION ! There is a a lot to explore and discover about cultural influences that have traveled. MRS. E.E. ZAYAS
Heck we just say RTM @ our house!
I'm so happy you enjoyed yourselves eating some real Philly food. Visit us again.
Thank you for the invite back! We had a great time but there is still so much we want to see next time.
You two chaps are so lovely! Glad you enjoyed reading terminal market!
Thank you!! 😊
scrapple is a pork version of white pudding/black pudding but they use corn meal instead of oats. Put some ketchup on it.... yumm. Also the Maple Bacon donut from Beilers is my fave. Perfectly sweet and salty with that hint of smoke.
Thanks for your comment! Your right, that maple bacon doughnut was amazing
Thanks for sharing!! We loved the apple dumpling too!
Keep up the amazing food adventures you two. Love the videos. Always entertaining and informative about the other parts of the U.S. that I have yet to visit and experience.
Thank you! Will do! Let us know if you have any suggestions on where we should plan to visit?
Absolutely! Reading Terminal Market is a food lover's paradise. The variety of cuisines and local specialties really makes it a must-visit spot!
Some people put whip cream on their sweet potato pie here. It’s generally an autumn thing served at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sweet potatoes are eaten baked, and fried like French fries. Also casseroles at Thanksgiving and Christmas as well.
Been hooked on your channel since i found it 2 days ago! 🇺🇸 🇬🇧
Thanks for watching!🤗
I just found them this week and am bing watching their videos! I love how they are so excited by the food they try. And it was hilarious watching them put all the condiments on the cheesesteaks. They had no idea what to do. Please next time no cheez whiz. It’s so gross. American or Cooper sharp is the best. You could also try a pizza steak with provolone. That is my favorite
I want to go here now! It looks delicious. Amazing. Thanks for sharing y'all!🤗💚
It was a great experience and we barley should any the many food stands! Let us know what you think if you visit.
@thebritstry, that's so exciting!😊! Will do that!
Scrapple is made from everything that isn’t good enough to make it into hot dogs or bologna. But I still want to try it! 😂😂
Some of us put a little maple syrup on scrapple.
Oh!! we didn't think of that.. Sounds delicious. Thanks for watching
Year round. And glad you liked the scraple. Love your episodes. You rock!
Thank you so much!! 😊
Oh! Your comment has made Me crave that scrapple all over again😊Thanks for watching
I cant believe you didnt go to dinic's roast pork. One of the best sandwiches in philly
Thanks for the tips!
Thank you for this great review, it was fantastic. You two are so much fun to watch, but I really wanted to jump through the computer and join you. All the food looked very good.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the wonderful comment ☺️
Everything looked delicious. You did Philadelphia good. Im proud of you both. ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻👍🏻
Scrapple was a staple when my kids were young. Scrapple was also inexpensive so it was often had on the weekends.
I live in Philadelphia and visit The Reading Terminal Market every time I go downtown. Love the place!
The Reading Terminal Market is such a gem! There's so much to discover every time you visit. What's your favorite dish there?
@ I get the corned beef special at the Hatfield Stand, the one with the bacon and shaved deli meat.
Also, Philadelphia Chinatown is a short walk from the Market. There’s great food there as well!
"talking nonsense there". 😂😂😂. That was soooo funny. Love it!
😂
Great culinary exploration at Reading Terminal Market! I am so happy you liked the Scrapple. I was brought up putting syrup on it. It doesn't have to be real maple syrup. The egg combo with the scrapple works too! Very interesting point about a similarity to haggis ( I have never tried it but I have tried black pudding however!) Love you guys!
We really appreciate your comment! It’s wonderful to hear about your experiences with scrapple and black pudding. We wouldn't have thought to add syrup, now we want to try it😋
Fantastic video guys. You rock! ♥️
Thank you so much! We're glad you enjoyed the video!
YUM to EVERYTHING!!❤😊😊
It was delicious! Thanks for watching
omg in need to go to Pennsylvania Philadelphia or somewhere to get some amish cooking 😊
It was so good! Highly recommended. Let us know what you think if you get a chance to visit. Thanks for taking the time to watch
They barely scratched the surface of what Reading Terminal Market has to offer, but they did a great job!
You're right! There's so much to explore at Reading Terminal Market. We definitely need to go back for round two!
My all time favorite market ever. I travel for my job and found this place. I was in love moment one.
Same here! It’s a great experience. Thanks for watching
A Reuben is magical. It isn't always the sandwich you want. It isn't the best choice for every occasion. But a Reuben always, always satisfies.
I get my grinders from Maxie’S deli, the Rueben grinder and the Reuben in a spinach or wheat wrap are amazing
Scrapple dipped in maple syrup is next level WOW! So good!
Absolutely! Scrapple and maple syrup really does sound like a fantastic combination. Thanks for the recommendation!
Thank you so much for your kind words!! Glad to have you along g ft or our journey
Nothing goes better with Scrapple then mountain oysters. mmm mmm good.
You can put ketchup on your scrapple, or even apple butter witch is one of the Pennsylvania Dutch customs
Thanks for sharing that! I love learning about different customs and how people enjoy their food. Apple butter on scrapple sounds delicious
You both are an absolute joy to watch! I love your passion for food. I live in New Jersey, and we can find sweet potato pie all year round. I like to put whipped cream on it. 😊
That's amazing! We love a good sweet potato pie. Thanks for watching!
Philadelphia is a great city! We briefly went to Chinatown but didn’t film it because we were rushing. We will be back again in the future ☺️
Pumpernickel bread slightly toasted, mayonnaise and choice of mustard, egg over easy and slice of scrapple. Almost 50yrs of a snack
We would love to go back and spend more time at Reading Market in the future.
@@thebritstryit's definitely a day trip.
Excellent, enjoyable, video. Absolutely love watching you two. Stay in love. Your viewers adore your togetherness.
