    Pete for me this was one of your top ten DIY video's that actually helped me understand clear coats, and I thank you. Going forward I wish you and Minnie the best life and a succesful body shop in Utah.

    Southern polyurethanes is not affiliated with any of the big name companies. They are located on Georgia and they manufacture all of their own products. Clear, primers, basecoats, single stages, reducers and the list goes on. Great company and their customer service and tech support is second to none.

    i totally agree with you, pete. i noticed this a while back. colors have so many shades to them as it is. some people would say, its almost impossible to match old to new paint because of the sun fading and what not. i can see that but wasnt convinced. then one day i litterally saw a yellow tint in the clear coat. bumpers are a double whammy i think. the plastics have a big part in color changing.

    spot on pete,another thing to add is that the hardeners have issues with clarity also, don't use cheap hardeners with quality clears

    Man you're absolutely right! I took my car to some fancy body shop here down in SoCal and they did a simple bumper work on it and turned it back to me with a yellowish bumper. When I asked them why it's not matching they tried so hard to bullshit me and said it's plastic. Then I talked to my brother who does body work and agrees with you. So those clowns had to paint the whole bumper on a brand new car.
    One thing I would add to your video is, to put a white background behind your clear coats so you'd have the same background reflection to clearly see the difference.

    Thanks Pete! I once refinished a 74 corvette with the panels separated, using ppg computerized mixing paint system, and once the car was finished, and after I buffed it, I brought the car outside and noticed very slightly that the panels were slightly different shades/depths of brown metallic. I was pissed, and had to respray the car together, and then it came out fine. The point is, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the panels came out in different shades, and lost my mind trying to figure it out. I never even thought about all that with the clears. Mind blowing my friend Pete!

    I read that Matrix is PPG. Obviously not exactly the same, but the story is that the head chemist for PPG quit and since the formula was not patented , he took his own formula and started his own company, called "Matrix". Maybe that is the reason it is so good.

    Dear Pete, The yellowish color of clear coats tells us that it had an additive for preventing UV effect that degrades the resins and fades the color pigments.
    The colorless clear seems good but the color pigments on the base coats fades out in 1 year. Especially the blue and red colors fades rapidly.
    The hazes occurs because of formulation mistakes (wrong solvent, wrong amounts of silicone additives, etc).
    Big company's products (Akzo Nobel Sikkens, Basf, Dupond Standox, PPG Deltron, etc) has that additive to prevent effects of UV on their products.

      No, that's a load of horse shit.cheap resins are what cause piss yellow clear. This is snake oil that was sold 20 years ago for shit that was inferior but cost a fortune. So HOK and Matrix are crystal clear, but not as good as PPG, because they're not piss yellow? gtfoh!

      you are right knightrider uv protectant is what makes clear coats so pricey and a little yellow cast in a cup.........you can spray 4 coats of 2021 on a sheet of glass and there will be no yellow cast at all

    All correct info ,they have the same issue at Aston Martin UK matching their own cars ,if a production line white Aston needs matching it is a big problem due to the amount of clear applied to the car which tints the white to yellowish ,so for anyone trying to match a white Aston paint job beware ,the base may well be correct but will show whiter due to the amount of clear Aston applied to the original job ,they use Dupont

    Here i am over thinking my car. Im ready for paint. Using PPG DBC on my car. Been using Deltron 4000 clear. Im happy i hate changes but been thinking about the House of Kolor kosmic show clear. PPG seems to shrink and i wait a week to buff. I even sand with 1500 let it sit for a week to cure and hit it again. Looks good but it loosens up and i have to sand it again and buff the car again. I will try the Matrix.

    So your saying the PPG is better for an off Road vehicle because its hard to sand and buff after it completely dry, so that means less scratches on pain from shrubbery.

    I'm so glad to here someone say how shitty house of color clear is. In Feb this year I bought and restored a wrecked 07 Jaguar XK. It is my baby. I did all the work myself ( well with my boyfriend's help ). And when it came time to paint it, I didn't have the money or time. I was just excited to have it fixed. So I painted it with what was available to me late at night. I used finish 1st blender and added my own cobalt blue metallic pigment to a dark blue base coat. Turned out beautiful. It looked so good that i didn't want to skip out on a good clear coat. So I went to my friend who sells paint. He had me use House of Color. I hadn't used this clear before but I was ready to lay it down.
    It was about 80-85°. Pretty hot for NC. So I waited until night time. The temp was now more like 75-80°. The first coat looked good. Was happy with it. But second coat started drying to fast no matter what I did. I ended up putting on a third coat to ensure I had enough to sand. When finished, I had a couple dry streaks and so much orange peel. Still, no biggie I thought. But after cut, buffing, and polishing, the clear was no where near the gloss I thought it would be. And this is the stage that Im always comfortable with. You can make anything shine if you know what your doing.
    It was never as shinny as another brand I use. I like SS‐1200 Speedo Select Glamour Clearcoat. It's $179 a gallon with the hardner. Free shipping from Amazon next day. Are there better clears. I know there is. But the hype for house of color is BS.
    This car is my baby. I'm disappointed how the clear turned out. It reminds me of plastic not the glass look I desired. So when I get free from everyone else's vehicles, I'll have to respray the clear again. Just not with HOC. They have some beautiful color paints. But I'm not impressed with the clear.
    I know someone is going to say that I should have used HOC for my metallics before clear coat. I hear ya. But it's the only issue I've had when switching brands. So in that regard it also makes for not a great product if it has no universal value. To everyone that loves the HOC clears .... Glad you like it and it works for you. But I won't use it again unless I have to. And in the future I will probably use a better product than the Glamour clear to respray my XK. I felt like it should be mentioned for price point, quality, and convenience for anyone looking for a product that does a great job and lays down smooth.
    I hope this adds some value to your channel. Painting a vehicle has, like you have said before, so many variables that even experienced painters want to drive the car off a cliff when it goes wrong. For anyone new to painting. If you love what you do. Don't give up. The reward of a beautiful flawless paint job is so satisfying and worth all the hard work. And once your skill level has reached its potential, nothing but perfection is acceptable in the bubble of paint world. With all the problems we have all had. It is still the most rewarding job I can think of in many regards. Your channel gives it to you straight up and is honest on so many levels. I appreciate the real life content and share your pains. Thanks

    • @lonalindsey494
      @lonalindsey494 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not advertising the Glamour clear as to replace a high end product as you mentioned in your video. I just thought it might be helpful for someone starting out on a budget. It lays smooth to be a high solids clear. (Hard to get without experience) and I would say it ranks close to the more expensive brands. So dont go on a rant on me for bringing it up. It's merely a suggestion for reasons I mentioned.

    I did a spot job with the ppg deltron clear on a white car and there was an absolute color match. I also used the deltron base so my question is, is there still a color match issue if you use the same base and clear manufacturer because they are designed to work hand in hand?

  • @robdumais2443
    @robdumais2443 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    In order to lower the cost of the clear coat some paint manufactures choose to mix enamel resins in with urethane resins to make clear coat. Enamel resins have the yellow tint you are talking about. Vs. the water white look everyone wants. The manufactures say they are urethane clear coats but in reality they are blended to keep cost lower.

      The other thing is that since you don't like to advertise, we know that no one is paying you to promote any one company (not that you would anyway). In todays world, you can never trust reviews because for all we know the product being most highly recommended is paying for the "unbiased review".

    Lots of manufacturers like toyota and ford are tinting their clearcoat to the color of the car/truck. It's really making it harder to do repair spot jobs and blend jobs. Just a nightmare for the most part. Most repair shops think the basecoat was off a little bit when they just aren't aware of what is going on.

    the "wet wet" bs clear I tried that is made by autobahn shrank up like nothing I have ever seen before. Its crazy. Most seem to be fine like that for a week or so in the cup but then they start cracking and shrinking eventually at least for me they do. I've been happy with most of the Matrix stuff I have tried. Good video.

      Wow. They sell autobahn where you live. I used it a few times and had to sand it with 800 wet to bust through for buffing. The stuff is hard as a rock. Then what took the cake is when it showed signs of solvent pop or small fish eyes. That drew the line for me. Matrix MS 52 is a very good clearcoat. Take it easy. PETE

      It's not something you would actually think about and when I noticed many years ago it was by accident! I ran out of clear on a job and had to rush to the paint store to buy more, they where out of the PPG brand so I got some other brand clear to paint the bumper cover and decklid. When the job was all done the next day I rolled it out of the paint booth, colorsanded it and buffed it then removed all the tape and paper, took it outside, washed it off only to notice that the bumper cover and decklid where a shade different in color.. I repainted it using the same clear and it was still fucked up.. I finally realized it wasn't the paint it was the clear, Now I don't mix clears when painting a car......

    Which one will withstand UV rays the best and stand up to abuse from driving? Will the PPG last longer with the abuse of daily driving even though it looks a little yellow or does the Matrix do just as good? I am looking long term at how the car or truck will look after 5 to 10 years and not necessarily a week after you spray it. I say this because a lot of factory painted vehicles that are washed and waxed ever so often still look good after 10 years and the hood on my car that I painted with NAPA cheap clear coat looks like ass 4 years later although it looked great when it was done. Which one is the most durable?

    Hey Pete, great info on the clears but why so many comments about the Matrix not having UV protection? Does that mean it would fade after being outside for a period of time or does it have the UV protection and you just can't see it? Thanks for taking time to do these videos..

    How do you feel about Dupont Paints and Clears?
    I use their Nason 497-00 clear alot and i really enjoy it for a price about 165 a gallon + hardner
    Give it a try one day if you havnt already and let us know if you think its a good clear to use. I dont have anyone around my area that sells Matrix or i would give that a try, i used DCU2042 a few times but its so expensive and i dont see a difference between that and Nason

      All clears are going to break down sooner or later no matter what brand you use, it depends on what climate you live in and how you take care of the final finish..

    I gotta Question, I know this Guy that mixes his first two coats of clear with base and the last just clear & I don't know the mix ratio, but I want to know if that's good bad stupid what? now he claims that he does that so that down the road you get a nick or a scratch you just wet sand that shit & buff it back out--- I don't Know--- sounds good---never done it, Whats your thoughts on this Pete?

    Great vid Pete, I work in a GM factory paint shop. We use BASF. When we switched to 2k it be came a bitch to sand and polish. The clear has a lot of yellow in it too. just wondering if you've ever used BASF products and any thoughts on 2k products.

    Great video, thanks. Would the harder clear chip easier? Or the opposite? And if so,wouldn't that outweigh the color of it?

    • @moparmusclecars
      @moparmusclecars 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      my opinion is harder clears are more brittle and usually chip easier. I prefer a clear that is more like a rubber bouncy ball and than the rocks have more of a tendancy to "bounce" off the clear before chipping. clears come in all variations, and everyone needs to experiment themselves and find what works best for them. spraying patterns, area where you live, painting equipment (guns, compressors, etc) all play a part in how these clears will apply, and the workability in regards to buffing them varies. I like clears that dry up nice, but not to a point that they buff like a rock. The shop next door sprayed a full paint with Sherwin Williams best clear and in about three days he started color sanding and buffing. By day four it was buffing like concrete, and he even complained that he had to catch it in its window, or he would never get it buffed. It all depends on the chemical make up of which clear you prefer to use.

    Just had my painter do some silver HOK sprayout cards cleared with the top end Standox and not even close to a match to cards the supplier did on the quick with a crappy rattle can clear. All makes sense now! The yellow influence on the cards cleared with Standox changes the colour to a point where - it's not even the same colour. The clear, clean highlight is now - yellow. In fact, the cool tone blue grey silver is now green in the midtones. Wow! Yep. The clear is MAJOR!!!! Thanks Pete! Great video!

    I recently started using speedokote and its decent, way freaking better than spray paint clear anyways. But I want a clearcoat that doesn't scratch easy, like with spray paint and the speedokote I can scratch it with my fingernail. I used something called art resin for a little bit and I also use devcon 2 part epoxy and they are rock hard solid. Like the art resin is so hard you can't polish it after wet sanding, never tried with the devcon but I can't scratch either with my fingernail. I want to repaint my truck but I don't want to use a clearcoat that's gonna crack or something from hail hitting it. The speedokote polishes like a dream I just don't think it's vehicle exterior worthy. On my truck I tried wetsanding the original clearcoat and nothing, I mean nothing will polish it. It feels like a trade off almost, get a rock solid clear and never polish it or get a more easily scratchable clear and then you can shine it all the time but its not as strong

    Good info. Pete, I've been watching and learning. I don't paint but would like to learn/ try. Quick question, do you find that the Matrix is compatible with all of the other materials like bondos and primers? Or do you have to use all the products from one company? thanks
