One of my biggest gripes with this game is how uninspired the maps are. There’s no variety, and some lazy level design. (One Literally returning to the same hub area and just running to the other side of the map was a level? Come on…).
It is unfortunately that this game looks and feels like the studio didn't really do anything for years progress wise. And instead just kicked back for years and finally came out with a game that could have come out no more than a year after L4D2.
I've bought the game and played it with friends. A co-op shooter is a co-op shooter, it's hard to go wrong. That said, it's a big letdown when compared to L4D2 - which is fine. L4D2 is basically a perfect game for what it is. You can't really top that, and you can't really just "make" that. Many have tried, and they've never really managed. This game ends up becoming pretty enjoyable when you get into a good flow and start enjoying the game on its own terms. You'll stop enjoying it as much the MOMENT you think about L4D. It's unfair, but that's the way it is imo. It's okay, that feeling goes away. Hopefully Turtle Rock will continue improving, because this game is wasting some of its potential.
The gameplay is better than L4D, imo. I love L4D2 but playing it after playing B4B makes me want to go back to B4B but I still prefer L4D2's atmosphere, levels and enemy designs over B4B.
@@LS-Lizzy interesting. Maybe it's a shooter preference thing. I tend to prefer older shooters like half life 1, quake, duke 3d. Games that have a lot of movement. I found B4B way too slow
@@momamario I use a controller (even though I play on PC) and L4D2 never felt quite right with a controller, imo. There was awhile back they even messed up controller support for awhile so I couldn’t play it but since they’ve fixed it I have found a feel I like but I still prefer B4B when comparing the two back to back. I also like the card system as it adds more depth to the gameplay loop and makes runs feel more unique than the last. If they could capture that L4D atmosphere and top notch level design in the next game or in the DLC I can see myself being swayed even more so. Personally, I still think there’s a lot more potential in this type of game that no one has really managed to perfect.
@@momamario Yeah, I started on the 360 as well and then moved to Steam. The Xbox versions actually feels a lot worse, using Steam Input I've managed to customize the settings so the game feels much better with the Xbox controller. I've been playing B4B on PS5 though with the DualSense which has been great, imo. I really just enjoying playing the game. Lol
As much as I love L4D, im not huge on this game. Im not a big fan of the card system, and there isnt much to drive me to keep playing after each round. I personally like World War Z more, it has classes with skill trees to earn and level up, as well as weapons and attachments to level, more of a "replay value" for me... on top of having just an insane amount of zombies on screen that make a lot of levels exciting... and with WWZ's new DLC, it added "first person camera" which IMO just makes it the better choice if you wanted a "L4D sequel".
@@iamMarcusKing that "wanna be" game has so much more replay value and actually has a strat for setting up for incoming hordes that involves teamplay in higher difficulty levels, not to mention more beautiful maps, lmao. As a veteran l4d1 and l4d2 player, wwz doesnt have to novelty or the vs mode where you can play as a rooftop leaping 'hunter' or the tongue sniping 'smoker', clearing out hordes in world war z is much more satisfying and its mesmerizing to see thousands of zombies swarming, as seen in the movies. But do get it on sale, I was able to snatch it up for 6 dollars or so when it was on sale (missed my chance for a free copy from epic store games) and few weeks back I purchased the dlc pack for 20 and it's still worth it
Great review Huber. You showed a lot of restraint at the end on the line "it'll take more to keep players eager to return for another decade" and not writing "it'll take more to keep players eager to come back for blood."
Misleading: Bots do glitch out a lot, true. But they also have unlimited ammo, spawn in items, desperately try to follow you and can set off aggro triggers (larmed doors, birds) so while the bots are flawed, they are vastly surperior to a poor human player and they can NOT outright sabotage things for you. Mistake: In recruit difficulty friendly fire is not "almost nothing" it is turned off. It not only says so as you pick the difficulty, it could have easily been tested in game. Otherwise, great review but with some rust on the hinges - much like the game itself.
I preferred a bot on my team instead of a random on Veteran sometimes lol. Sometimes people would have an awful build and I'd prefer a bot with infinite ammo and can teleport instead haha.
@@valenpro9512 Have you tried Veteran and Nightmare? I've beat a couple of Acts on Veteran but some randoms I got were the most braindead COD players you could imagine (maybe because everyone can play it on Gamepass like me lol). Then again some people on Xbox's built in LFG are also really bad with no proper decks and constantly leaving the group. It came down to getting comfortable with the bot who wasn't going to run away, get grabbed and die straight away lol

Honestly, always online, no singleplayer progression really rubbed me the wrong way. I honestly tried World War Z Aftermath few days ago, and that was lot more fun.
I hate the way the game just throws the special zombies at you every 5 seconds and the giant things just don't fit in. Would rather play l4d tbh. But it does has some neat ideas.
Thanks to this review when it came out i was able to hold off til the game hit a decent sale. Just got it now and im glad i paid what i paid for it and not full price. The 2 gems i got on sale today where Rift Apart and Tales of Arise. Those games are well worth the sale price. Tales of Arise is worth every penny.
Well thats the thing, again another game that feels like it was launched bit too early...but I do hope Turtle Rock learned from their mistakes made with Evolve, so that the game's future is brighter
@@Balnazzardi I always assume publishers are to blame for rushing a game out, but developers need to learn to put their foot down and push back against them. I am getting tired of gaming coming out and basically being a paid beta test by the consumers.
@@Gonboo exactly...thats why Ive lost interest for most new releases and only buy them years after...I know games have been pathched and expanded in the "good old days" as well but recently its felt like too many gamed come out of the oven way too early, especially when you compare them to games that do have high quality and great amount of content right from the start. Oh well not my promblem really as I do have too much of a backlog anyway, plenty of games to last me for years but I still wish for the sake of this industry that developers/publishers would take their time with game releases and always delay if possible rather than force the game out. Thankfully thats what some publishers/devs have learned to do like with Halo Infinite was delayed for 1 year or how for example Horizon Forbidde west was pushed to 2022. Or how Witcher 3 was delayed couple of times...but the there are cases like Cyberpunk, Fallout 76, Anthem, original Destiny etc....
I'm putting my chips in Darktide personally, Back 4 Blood just seems like it is trying to be a hollow copy of what it once was and isn't really moving forward, while the Tide games from Warhammer have moved forward while being inspired by L4D.

The game itself is very fun but I think without mod support, it's going to run out of steam fast. The whole reason L4D2 lasted so long was bc mods made the game basically infinite. If they don't add mod support at some point I think it'll be a big mistake for them.

I don't recommend purchasing the console release until they add the option to tweak acceleration curves and whatnot because the controls feel swimmy. Then again, if you already have Game Pass, there's no reason not to give it a shot if you are curious.
It's a fun game but you really need a team with good communication to get through normal and hard mode, solo is not recommended since you get no way to unlock cards and the bots really are annoying to play with also you don't get to keep checkpoints when you join someone's else session. Maybe I'll go back to it in the future if it's still on gamepass.
Continuing a run when you queue solo is basically impossible. I had to wait 30min for a game. I also wish the easiest difficulty was a bit easier, so it could more or less be a guaranteed finish with bots. It would be good if there was a difficulty between easy and medium. The difficulty jump up is huge. Also, I may just be unlucky, but it felt like I had an endless stream of specials, which, ironically makes them much less special.
After playing a ton of "Evolve"(got the Platinum trophy). I was looking forward to something new from Turtle Rock. Looks fun and all but I might wait a bit to hop in. By then I hope they add more substance to the game to keep coming Back 4 Blood.
The greatest strength of L4D was its levels. A game maybe more modern, have better combat, better ambiance and better graphics but if it doesn't have a map like carnival it can't touch l4d..
Better combat? I dont think so. What is so better about it? Ironsight does nothing while i need 3rd button to use wanky melee attack without any impact. Combat in L4D was quick and intuitive. Guns in B4B sounds like toys, and gore looks fake and boring. Combat in L4D is waaay beyond that. Better ambience? No way. Music in L4D is a masterpiece. Here is genereic at best. And dunno about COD graphic too, thise game have zero identity. Its look like any of hundreds generic shooters.
It's literally the same, every act the game seems to play in the same foresty, countryside with suburbs and litlte towns and swampy areas. They even reuse some levels that you play again in act 2 and 3. You'll never really leave this place, it's not like in l4d where every chapter is a completely different setting.
Game definitely needs some quality of life improvements/updates [solo play, switch attachments, PvP campaign (unlikely)] but this game with three buds is just simply pure fun.
The finished game is not much better. If it was a 20 dollar game it would be a good weekend game, but in general it is quite boring and WAY too difficult! I'm at ACT 3-2 and honestly some of the maps just feel so unbalanced! Luckily the game is free on gamepass.
This game is a lot of fun with friends, but you're really rolling the dice otherwise in matchmaking. You'll often get someone who treats the missions like solo speedruns, and inevitably find themselves dead, crippling the team. You'll also run into people who trigger alarms left and right, quickly ramping up the frustration. Huber says it best: this is a good foundation. That being said, it needs more to justify the pricetag.
I have fun playing this game regardless if I have people to play with! Absolutely everything I was hoping for in a new l4d. Swarm has its difficulty with staying connected but Campaign is solid 👌👍 absolutely an amazing multi-player title 👏
I don't get it, what did warner bros do so all the reviews are giving them almost perfect scores? It's bullshit, this game and the devs have red flags all over. The price, the handling of offline, the fact it will never have mod support and you'll have to pay for new maps, characters etc. We don't even know what the dlc contains, but it is 40$ on top of the 60$ base price. For a game that offers you 2 modes with a campaign that keeps reusing the same assets and levels repeatedly and a pvp that's been slapped on as an afterthought. Why does mediocrity get such praises..?

It is really sad. Bland games like this got review just because devs lied about L4D connections, while great games like Aliens: Fireteam are skipped and got almost no spotlight time. :/
Tried it on gamepass, wasn't a fan either, what rubbed me wrong was that I chose to play alone pressed start because I had a call and the game continued. On PC with all the mods L4D2 is way more fun, I don't get why people would want this game?
Seems about right. I played the beta with friends and it just felt like L4D with a card system tacked on. Nothing particularly new about the experience that made me want to buy the full game. I'm sure people will enjoy it but I was hoping for something that was a bit more exciting. Evolve with all its problems was at least a game that Turtle Rock tried new things with.

No not at all lol characters are boring generic and bland the weapons feel floaty and clunky the special infected if you wanna call them that are just not fun to kill or fight there bullet sponges and they literally reuse levels and call them new chapters by just making it night time lmao 💀 and there's like no gore like at all which is pretty lame...
You try it for yourself so you'll see whether it's a good game for you or not. If you have a gamepass you can try it there for $1. As a L4D franchise fan, for me this is an upgrade. This game has flaws but it will get better in time (Fingers crossed).
I really cant stand the Apex weapon system or the Cards for that matter. When the ONLY thing you can use points on is cosmetics and cards, then repeated play with nothing but randoms, due to a lack of friends on Game Pass, feels meaningless tbh. Put a ridiculous stupid hard "easy" starter mode on top of this and its hard to get motivated to jump back in, the game as it is now locks out a vast amount of casual players and is likely to turn the game into a try hard toxic game where all that matters is the "Get good" motto. What would make the game more appealing. - Kiddy easy mode, like the one in the Beta , for new comers to learn the ropes and get used to the mechanics. - An Armoury in camp where you could collect and upgrade weapons and gear, which you could then equip and start out with on new runs. - Quicker general movement speed since it always feels like your running through mud.
The game built that way - at first you suck and its ok. Basically for first 10-15 hours its rogulike. When you collect some ammount of cards game changes dramatically. With right build you will run like wind and kill everythong you see on recruit. While you are climbing there you'll learn levels, mechanics and try different playstyles. And then you'll go to veteran and suck again :D

I'm always skeptical if any co-op survival games will be as compelling to me as Gears' Horde mode. I really like the base building as aspect.
I really disliked the controls on console when I played the beta. Hard pass for me. Great review as always.

As of right it’s a good game that has potential to become a great game depending on how turtle rock support and update it
Game definitely needs some quality of life improvements/updates [solo play, switch attachments, PvP campaign (unlikely)] but this game with three buds is just simply pure fun.

I played the beta and was not a fan of this game. It feels so generic to me, the maps felt uninspired and I HATED the card system.
The finished game is not much better. If it was a 20 dollar game it would be a good weekend game, but in general it is quite boring and WAY too difficult! I'm at ACT 3-2 and honestly some of the maps just feel so unbalanced!
Luckily the game is free on gamepass.

This game is a lot of fun with friends, but you're really rolling the dice otherwise in matchmaking. You'll often get someone who treats the missions like solo speedruns, and inevitably find themselves dead, crippling the team. You'll also run into people who trigger alarms left and right, quickly ramping up the frustration. Huber says it best: this is a good foundation. That being said, it needs more to justify the pricetag.
I love these type of games but this one just didn’t click with me. I prefer World War Z.
I have fun playing this game regardless if I have people to play with! Absolutely everything I was hoping for in a new l4d. Swarm has its difficulty with staying connected but Campaign is solid 👌👍 absolutely an amazing multi-player title 👏
Reviewers are being too nice to this game, it is fucking awful compared to Left4Dead which is near 15 years old now.

I don't get it, what did warner bros do so all the reviews are giving them almost perfect scores? It's bullshit, this game and the devs have red flags all over. The price, the handling of offline, the fact it will never have mod support and you'll have to pay for new maps, characters etc. We don't even know what the dlc contains, but it is 40$ on top of the 60$ base price. For a game that offers you 2 modes with a campaign that keeps reusing the same assets and levels repeatedly and a pvp that's been slapped on as an afterthought. Why does mediocrity get such praises..?

It is really sad. Bland games like this got review just because devs lied about L4D connections, while great games like Aliens: Fireteam are skipped and got almost no spotlight time. :/

Constantly low on ammo, not enough health items and too much going on it fights.
Tried it on gamepass, wasn't a fan either, what rubbed me wrong was that I chose to play alone pressed start because I had a call and the game continued. On PC with all the mods L4D2 is way more fun, I don't get why people would want this game?
Seems about right. I played the beta with friends and it just felt like L4D with a card system tacked on. Nothing particularly new about the experience that made me want to buy the full game. I'm sure people will enjoy it but I was hoping for something that was a bit more exciting. Evolve with all its problems was at least a game that Turtle Rock tried new things with.

No not at all lol characters are boring generic and bland the weapons feel floaty and clunky the special infected if you wanna call them that are just not fun to kill or fight there bullet sponges and they literally reuse levels and call them new chapters by just making it night time lmao 💀 and there's like no gore like at all which is pretty lame...
You try it for yourself so you'll see whether it's a good game for you or not. If you have a gamepass you can try it there for $1. As a L4D franchise fan, for me this is an upgrade. This game has flaws but it will get better in time (Fingers crossed).
I really cant stand the Apex weapon system or the Cards for that matter.
When the ONLY thing you can use points on is cosmetics and cards, then repeated play with nothing but randoms, due to a lack of friends on Game Pass, feels meaningless tbh.
Put a ridiculous stupid hard "easy" starter mode on top of this and its hard to get motivated to jump back in, the game as it is now locks out a vast amount of casual players and is likely to turn the game into a try hard toxic game where all that matters is the "Get good" motto.
What would make the game more appealing.
- Kiddy easy mode, like the one in the Beta , for new comers to learn the ropes and get used to the mechanics.
- An Armoury in camp where you could collect and upgrade weapons and gear, which you could then equip and start out with on new runs.
- Quicker general movement speed since it always feels like your running through mud.

The game built that way - at first you suck and its ok. Basically for first 10-15 hours its rogulike. When you collect some ammount of cards game changes dramatically. With right build you will run like wind and kill everythong you see on recruit. While you are climbing there you'll learn levels, mechanics and try different playstyles. And then you'll go to veteran and suck again :D
