    Gunnar! True words. Excellent video and philosophy. I've had a walleye follow my lure all the way on a shoreline rock while fishing below a river dam in a back eddy. How many times as that happened when I couldn't see it? Exactly! Pike are known for it. Thanks buddy, I always learn or am reminded of something from you. Looking forward to these next two tying videos. 👍😎

    Awesome video Dude! Tip two was my favourite! As a ‘newbie’ to fly fishing, I still haven’t got my casting nailed so I do exactly what you say not to.... I’ll not be doing it again!
    Really do appreciate each and every one of your videos! 👌👌👌

    I know this video is four years old. I wade fish a for smallmouth in a popular northern Illinois river. I agree with all three. I’ve caught fish with my fly in the water, just grabbing a drink out of my Nalgene. Fish every cast to me means before you cast have your feet set, pay attention, be ready to lean into one. And yes, smallmouth will take a fly a leader length away from you, at your feet. One more #4, if you get a short strike, feed out a little fly line and strip it in a hair faster. I’ve had second chances work many times. You do good work, cheers from Chicagoland.

    Hey Gunnar! Thanks for the video! There are a number of streams/small rivers close to home and spending a couple for hours after supper casting to 8 to 14 inch smallmouth is a pleasant way to spend the evening. Use a 4 wt 9 foot rod and a floating WF line to cast streamers, buggers, gurglers and poppers.

    Great tips Gunnar definitely can't catch those 7-10 inch smallies if your fly isn't in the water. lol ... I don't care how big or small a bronzeback is, they are pound for pound the most fun freshwater fish to catch. As I mentioned on Instagram (WVgoodguy)and I thank you for responding I have the same stick and I like how it cast in the yard with that intermediate sink tip line. I went with that because I was muskie and bass fishing from a boat in a lake and I needed to get down much faster than a floating set up, plus most streamer guys seem to use some kind of either intermediate or full sink line when fishing in deeper pools on small rivers, streams, etc.... I like both your flies and pretty much have binged watched all your tieing videos, will have to revisit some for some reminders. Fly design is always evolving, usually with better materials coming out like that Faux bucktail you have been using. Speaking of is that what you used in the Slow Jig Clouser or standard bucktail?

    I can attest to point 3, fish to your toes. I picked up a decent smallie the other just as I was getting ready to move spots. Stripped all the way to the bank and was about to pick it up, thought I was snagged in the grass bed, nope, had one on right at bank side. Happy accident that I will keep in mind now. Good video!

    You got a similar setup as me. I went with the reddington predator 7' 11" 8wt with a behemoth reel. Ive used it twice on a bass boat targeting large mouth but had trouble casting size 4 and size 2 weighted wooly buggers. The line just isnt heavy enough. Im using a rio smallmouth fly line. Bought yhe opst single hand shooting head and the lazar running line cus its supposedly much easier to cast heavy flies. Just gotta learn single hand skagit casting. 😕
    Will update when it comes in the mail and ive used it some.

      long distances atleast
      Only way I can get them out to a proper distance is by using the belgian cast. I need ALOT of distance. I'm fishing from a bass boat for large mouth and I need to be able to cast a minimum of 60 feet.

    • @carsonsekula7350
      @carsonsekula7350 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nuckin' Futs i have an 8 wt and I throw big ep flies at 60 ft with ease

    • @carsonsekula7350
      @carsonsekula7350 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nuckin' Futs it probably isn’t the wt it’s probably the rod something stiffer with a faster action and maybe longer rod could help

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sounds like the rod is underlined, which is why it won't load properly and generate the distance you need. Before you try various casting techniques - I'd simply recommend over-lining the rod by trying the Rio smallmouth in a 9wt. or moving to a specialty line with a more compact head which will likely be slightly overlined as the default in the 8 wt model - such as Rio Pike/Musky lines or the Rio Outboard Short. A properly lined 8wt with standard overhead casting with double hauls should be able to toss 7" flies 60 plus feet all day long. If you casting timing is rushed - you won't be able to generate distance regardless of if the rod is lined properly. Just make sure you use a powerful back stroke to get all the line behind you and wait for it to straiten out before moving forward again. A good way to practice is "Water loading" where you let the line land in the water behind you during the back cast before moving forward again. Once you have it down, slightly speed up your casting stroke so your line doesn't land on the water and you'll be golden. Hope that helps.

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Chris, the Mojo Bass is a BEAST! Love that thing. As far as reels go, the Behemoth is a great reel, but for Freshwater fishing nearly any reel with suffice. Even a cheap $40 reel will hold most Freshwater Fish. But if you have the coin for it, the Behemoth is solidly built and will last a long while!

    can you even feel the smallmouth or largemouth on the 8wt?
    ive been using a 5wt for largemouth but i cant really throw poppers or streamers with the 5wt. but i dont want to not feel the fish you know?

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Being honest, the 8 wt. is a bit much for the average fish here (10-12"), but I'm always hoping for a hog (16" - 20") which would have no problem doubling that rod over. 75% of the time when I'm wade fishing, I find a 6wt or 7wt to be perfect. Just light enough to make the smaller fish fun, but heavy enough to land a big one.

      @@Gunnar_Brammer Im going to spain 22nd december-19, and I only have 9wt rods. They have largemouth bass down there, and I just wonder if its overkill. I mean, I just want to catch a bass for the first time in my life, does it really matter if I throw smaller flies with it?

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The floating line was more so for the conditions (wade fishing with low water). The rod handles sinking lines great and has plenty of backbone to get them moving and pick them up quick out of the water

  • @tjlqk3
    @tjlqk3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would you recommend a 7 or 8 wt for trout fishing a 10-6 size streamer. Sinking leader.

    • @dunk7689
      @dunk7689 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's a not super heavy or wind resistant streamer you can fish a size 2 on a 5wt no problem. I fish size 10 streamers on my 4 weight. 10-6 I would say you're probably fine with your normal trout rod

    any tips for fall time smallmouth fishing

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't normally target them in the fall - they tend to school up and migrate to deeper water (slow runs, and often running 30+ miles downstream to reservoirs for wintering, ect....) They hang much deeper and tend to be tight lipped in the river. That's just my river - as of now, I chase Esox from the start of Sept until the lakes freeze (mid Nov.).

    Rule number 2 is a great one, and something I'm guilty of. The ability to pick up a cast and redo it is something you don't get to do in baitcasting, so why be so eager to do it fishing flies? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

    Not sure I like tip #1. While I don't disagree that you'll catch fish doing that, I don't think I could count that as a catch. As a collective, fly fishermen (myself included) tend to make fun of gear guys who just troll rigs around lakes waiting for a strike.....this seems like that just without the boat. Thats my opinion anyway and you know what they say about opinions.
