10 How To Fish a Streamer From the Bank

- The 10th episode of RIO's "How To" series, is presented by RIO ambassador Russ Miller. In this episode, Russ shows numerous ways to fish a streamer while wading along the bank of a river; each different from the rest, and when applied to a day on the river, will give you the maximum chance of catching a fish.
Russ's tips and great information takes the mystery out of this increasingly popular style of river fishing.
RIO's "How To" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish, or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique.
These invaluable lessons for the fly fisher are packed with information and top tips, and each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.
One of the best instruction videos I’ve seen
Thanks Robert
Streamers are my favorite way to fish by far because they work so well. I also love to see fish chase and roll on your fly aggressively. When a hatch is going and most people are using the old saying "There is a rise, tie on your dries" I go to a streamer. The larger fish will start to target the little fish that are shooting up to eat the hatch and then trying to get back to their holding spot on the bottom. I use heavy beaded streamers with long tails to really exaggerate their darting action on aggressive strips. When the bite slows switch to unweighted soft hackles to catch the remaining fish. They still hit aggressively so be careful not to snap your line on the take.
Been streamer fishing for 50 years. Great job. Covered it well. Nice fish!
*For the idiots who don't know the difference, the exact same techniques are used when on a dry bank. Just roll cast if there are obstructions behind you.
I get the criticism others made, but thought the same thing. As a fly fishing newb, what makes these "streamers"? The fact that he's using two? The fact the fly tail extends beyond the hook? Most thing's I've seen in the store called streamers are longer, almost worm like.
Ted: Not being "idiots" as you suggest , most of us do know the difference. Fishing from the "bank" is exactly that. Fishing "along" the bank is also exactly that. The point is to say what you mean and mean what you say. I also have been fishing for more than 50 years.
I guess David, it may be a matter of terminology. To a lifelong "FLY-fisherman" There is "bank" fishing, and "boat" fishing. My point was that there is a lot to be learned from this video. Without unnecessary criticism, a novice would take it more seriously.
I watch a ton of these. I would say most deserve some sort of criticism, but not this one. It is spot on. If a beginner watches this video he could learn a few things it took me years to learn.
Kevin; What constitutes a streamer is a combination of the "Pattern" used while tying, also the method of "presentation" When presenting most streamers, you are trying to emulate a small living creature, like a sculpin or very small fish, swimming, or passing through an area (usually in a river or stream) where a fish would likely take the opportunity and strike it! The cool thing about fishing two hooks is there is double the "time in area" of opportunity. Also something about it increases your chances, like the fish might think bottom hook is is chasing down the top hook and it helps the fish decide weather to strike. Catching a fish on the top hook can sometimes give you a tangle, but the real thrill is when you hook a fish on both hooks. Just be careful and make sure it is legal to fish two hooks in the area you are fishing. Give it a try! It's fun, and IMO a bit easier than most types of fly-fishing. This video is right on, and Russ is a good fisherman. A lot to learn here.
It’s taken the last few years to get this final challenge down. I’m now doing well with it and yes, the average catch is larger. I spent my last lesson with a guide because I knew this guide in particular was a very good streamer. Worth every penny. Spent hours and hours by myself afterwards....a great video. After working with others....I must say you are well versed and skilled at this. Thank you.
Mannnn his casting and wrist movement is.... extravagant.
😂
Good heck this guy casts like a dream! Just efficient and effortless!
I've only caught a few fish on a streamer and never one while river fishing. I feel like it's the last great hurdle I need to overcome. Vids like this really help!
Can we all agree you hat is on point.
We certainly can!!
Great video - Start with some rigging information, move to technique, and finish it off with some live action of bringing in a nice fish. Thanks Russell and Rio!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it...
Cue fish on set... BAM. Great video, beautiful fish.
" And that ladies and gentlemen , is how WE do that ,," Very informative. Awesome and great video.
Thanks for sharing.
Thankyou so much sir. nicely explained
I like the idea of tying the dropper off of the tag end of the triple surgeons knot instead of the bend of the hook. I’m curious about the knot used to tie the flies, clinch or non slip loop?
Clinch is fine, but most of the time we use fly clips, so the droppers don't shorten when changing flies. You need a long dropper to use a non-slip loop knot!
Great guy and a good instructional video!
Excellent. Ty.
Much thanks!
You're welcome!
Great video, the hat is even better.
Not my idea of bank fishing by I heard every word you said mate, great information and nice browny.
Thank you for the insight!!
Hi, thanks for the video. So you have sink tip, 3x leader, with 1x tippet... Shouldn't it be 1x leader (bigger) and 3x tipper (smaller)?
(fly fishing newbie asking)
That makes sense to us. Sadly Russ is no longer with us to see if that was a mistake, or if he has a reason - sorry, and good catch!
It's not an easy answer. When streaming you don't need your line to taper. Since you want your line to sink. Personally I have no experience with sinking lines. I use floating line; tapered leader with tippet.
Thank You
You're welcome
Very nice Brown!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks, it was a beauty!!! Thanks for commenting.
Got excited by the title when you mentioned, “....from the bank...”. Incorrect.
Informative, but misleading title.
Good point!
Awesome video thx for the info.
Should have called it "How to fish a streamer from the bank, not wading, but not really from the bank, and yes actually wading."
Can this tactic be approached with floating fly line
Absolutely!!
I love streamer fishing, that's my favorite method of catching trout, if there is no hatch
wooly bugger hatches lol:
Sculpin hatches
lol: I love sculpin hatches :-) i have many in my home river. they move in intermittent motion , touching the bottom with their belly in pause
Great video, what make are your chest waders, Greetings from the Emerald Isle of Ireland,👍
Those are made by Redington. Glad you like the video, and thanks for getting in touch. :)
Thanks for getting back to me, keep up with the good work,👍
I got the most fishes on streamers, in lakes, creeks, or at the coast. Mostly let it drift or retriev it slow with good stops in lakes. Its also really recommendable to wait till the fly turned after a drift and retriev a couple times, never had an bite while going against the current though. You really cant miss the bites, its like a lightning hitting the rod 😋
Could you explain how you do the loops while retrieving? I tried that a lot but alsways end up with tangled line 😅
Is it legal to tie on multiple hooks like that in states (I.E Minnesota) that only allow one line per-person?
Please check the local regs before fishing any body of water.
Hello, could you please tell us more about the setup rigging. First - stout leader - how it is long and what diameter?
Second you connect the stout leader with a bit 1X tippet with a blood knot, how long is this 1X tippet? And the tag is also 1X tippet or different diameter ? And how long eproximetely is the tag?
Thank you
Thanks for your message, and for watching the video. Since we filmed that we have actually developed a streamer leader that is much better than chopping one down. It is called the Big Nasty leader, and that's all we use for streamers now. Simply tie a streamer on to this (we mostly use the 1X), and then a tag end to that fly. Something slightly lighter, and for us usually 2X. Does that help?
www.rioproducts.com/products/big-nasty-leader
@@RIOPRODUCTS Thank you it is pretty clear.
But could you tell for this product - the Big Nasty, 1x is equal to size 20 LB and 2X to 16LB? Am I riight ?
Thank you
@@dmitrijsstupins9624 we don't make this as thin as a 1X. The material used to make a stiffer leader like this has a different diameter to strength ratio. The thinnest we make is .012", which doesn't make the X scale. If it did, it would be a minus 1X. That leader is 10lb. The 16lb is 0.16", and the 20lb is .018"
I've read a lot that 6wt line is better for heavier flies. Can I use 6wt line with my 5wt rod?
Absolutely, and yes, a little more weight in the line will certainly help cast the bigger streamers.
What weight rod is he using?
Can you tell us what rod and reel you fished... specifically, thanks!
Sage Method 690--4 & Sage 4260 reel
Thanks! I use the Method 690-4 and the Spectrum 5/6 LT on baby Tarpon and Bonefish... great gear.
not available on Sage site- - 690 - 4 is a 4 pc - what weight rod, what length, what line weight with rigging..?
What length and weight rod is that?
it is a 9ft, #6wt
People who "always" fish from a boat call this bank fishing (( You get the sarcasm right ))
For some reason, I rarely fish streamers. By buddy swears by them and pretty lives or dies with Woolly Buggers when we get out on the water. I ought to give them a try for a change, I know.
Well worth a shot when the fishing isn't great on nymph and dry - even better in the fall when the fish are aggressive!
I happen to prefer streamers sometimes, even when nymphing or dry is good. I will volunteer to go downstream an let my buddy go upstream with his dry's. Always competitive. I love it all.
The cast is always downstream ir could be upstream? Tks from Argentina
It could certainly be upstream. That is a great technique too..
I've seen and tried tying the dropper fly to the hook bend but never heard of the triple surgeon you made. which fly is the heavier one?
all the other comments are about bank fishing but i watched because i thought you were showing how to fish the stream bank while wading.
Usually you want the heavier fly on the very end of your leader, otherwise it could collapse the turnover if the heavier fly is the cone closest to the line.
I love it! "One for you"," and two for me" is my Streamer fishing motto :)
Something else, the action is better with the bigger or heavier hook at the bottom, but I sometimes make the bottom hook 2 or 3 sizes bigger. Not sure, but I think is emulates a small fish chasing the even smaller one and that can excite a trout?
Great vids!
What type is line is that. It looks heavy. My line is light and it doesn't cast like that at the end.
The line used was RIO's 24ft Sink tip line. The front end is heavy and dense as there is 24ft of sinking material at the front and it is designed to get down and cast large flies. If you are looking for a sink tip that has lighter presentation, I would suggest the InTouch Single Handed Spey line in the F/H/I configuration - an absolute marvelous line for casting and presentation.
RIO Products got it thanks. He makes it look so easy. IAM going to give this a try.
One thing I’ve found effective is to let the fly sit for a few second after the swing is over
This definitely works!
What brand of reel are you using?
It's a Sage reel
Am I the only fisherman that married a woman that doesn't like to fish or like the taste of fish? I spent age 24 -38 hiking and Fly Fishing the Sierra Nevada Mountains with just my German Shepherd. Why I got married to a woman that doesn't like to do either has been the most puzzling thing I've ever done in my life. At first I thought it would be my escape if married life wasn't the best but after my wife saved my life multiple times over the past 12 years I understand why. I would surely be fishing the Lakes and Rivers in the skies without her. Due to Diabetes I don't get the chance to spend time on the Rivers as I want too, I'm addicted to insulin 3+ times a day. It's not easy getting back to my favorite fishing holes not just because of the doctors appointments and medication but because of cost. Another is I don't live close enough to travel to them in one day anymore which really sucks. After spending every weekend or close for 14 years getting a chance to go one week a year is as depressing as it it enjoyable. Seems I spend 51 weeks a year thinking about the one I might have if the weather is good. For this reason I love these Fly Fishing videos! Thank All of you for sharing what I love!
Lose weight ..exercise (( swim or bicycle ) .... stop eating processed refined food..... stop drinking carb's - soda type drinks, and.the diabetes will literally go away....oh and stop whining.
@@steveevans424 That is so ignorant....do research before you say dumb stuff like that
Look at the Method bucking at the end of the cast, it wants more line!
Shane McCoy it wants an actual streamer
He's fishing with a streamer. Sometimes that's the only way to cover the head of the hole good without moving. Get it cross stream as quickly as you can. The guy is a great fisherman. You should pay more attention to the instruction instead of critique.
Riight.
What about drag?
Now i know how to fish with those rods

@@RIOPRODUCTS Hey there! didn’t think I would get a reply 🤣🤣 actually Love Rio products...just curious as to why you’re not using Fluoroflex for streamers .
@@MrAntihero1001 no reason really. You just don't need the invisibility of Fluoroflex in most streamer situations, as the fish are so reactive, so we use the cheaper version :). Thanks for your support of RIO, we love hearing you are a fan. Happy Thanksgiving
@@RIOPRODUCTS ahh I understand that. A bit different in the little wild streams in my area. They can be picky with presentation. Thanks for making quality products! Happy thanksgiving to you all as well !
@@MrAntihero1001 Yes, in those situations that makes a lot more sense!
Not on the bank. 🤥
I JUST THROW MY LINE INTO A FISH CHIPPER AND WILD STEALHEAD COMES OUT THE OTHER SIDE ALL WRAPPED AND READY FOR THE FREEZER , I KEEP SOME OUT FOR THE BARBIE.
You mean how to fish a streamer wading don't you? haha.In the east that's how we do it 90 percent of the time.
Where are you fishing at in this video?
The South Fork of the Snake River, in Idaho
4:54 he thought he had a fish
How to fish a river from the bank...proceeds to fish in the water 1/3 deep...
That's not from the bank, that's from the water... Hence you being in the river in your waders
What you are doing sir is nymphing, not streamer fishing. Please use streamers.
But it also amazes me the "exclusivity" and elitism of fly fishermen at times. Fly fishing for centuries has been done from the bank and wading.
Guy H. you seem to be trolling, but for the sake of other viewers, The Flies Russ is using are ALL (1:08) bead headed "Streamers", and his casting and presentation are exactly, Streamer fishing.
If this is what you do when Nymphing, you should watch a video on nymphing. It also is a great way to catch nice trout.
Why call it bank fishing? Misleading. But good info.
Good point. Maybe we should have called it "while wading" instead of "bank".
I guess some never heard of fishing from the “bank”.
This is rediculous. Just hold the line in your thumb and index finger.... sheesh....
The man is a good fisherman. You should send him a few of your streamers to try! Sometimes folks have a different way to feel the line. That's all fine. It is a good streamer fishing video.
Those are wet flies.
bait fish do not swim up stream. You are working on it? Try striping down steam. Boats are best.
Many people don't have the means to tow and launch a drift boat. This guy hooked a nice Brown without one.
He’s swimming the streamer across the water which baitfish do.
Look closely - he isn't fishing streamers.
Trevor Clapper , you are pretty ignorant of bait fish, hate to tell you but they swim upstream alot. You can fish downstream to though, both ways will work. I have been streamer fishing for 30 years,in fact it is my favorite way to fish, lots of action.Oh and you don't need no boat.
Stripping downstream is good, and in the right water is very effective from the bank.
Seems to me that if "Bait-fish" didn't swim upstream, wouldn't they all end up in a bay somewhere?
Your not fishing from the bank and your not using streamers but you are fishing and i took the click bait
WHAT'S A STREAMERS
That fish don't count. It wasn't from the bank
haaha bank fishing :P
A lot of wasted words.
this is so wrong...
Testosterone supplements might help with the piping voice.
i guess if he had a boat he could troll with you
Bada-bing.
