  • Catching bass on a fly is a blast anywhere, but doing it on a river while you walk & wade is the best! In this video host Colin McKeown is fishing his local rivers in the fall on the quest for big smallmouth bass. He discusses the forage available for bass at this time of the year and how anglers must adapt their strategies based on weather conditions and other factors in order to be successful. Lots of great information and tactics in this video!

    I'd love to see you guys do a video on fly fishing for Smallmouth in tidal rivers.

    Wow! Great video! So much information well presented for a novice like me. Am going to watch it again with a notebook. I know what I will be doing in the fall. (Central Ohio)

    I do this in my own rivers but with a BFS setup. I would love to do the same in rivers like these. Too bad that some river only allow fly fishing.

    I’m watching Colin cast pretty fair distances using a single haul. I like the technique and for all the extra effort I think double haul doesn’t really add that much more distance..

      There's no effort in double hauling. In fact, there's more effort in repeated false casting. You can get a 70+ cast with just two false casts. He's probably single hauling because he's hip deep in water and his line is on the water.

    What wade boots? That is the key I am missing to get started. Thank you

    Some nice smallies Colin. Besides the intermediate line, do you use a tapered leader or would it be fine to use straight 7-8 lb tippet?

      @newflyfisher  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know for bass fishing I usually use a straight piece of mono (8-10lb test) that is 8-10 feet in length. No need for a taper. Have fun fishing!

    How far do you have to cast 80 to 100 feet? I can hardly reach 60 feet long, sometimes when I'm fishing close to other fishermen I just prefer to leave the area making any excuses, I feel embarrassed about the 40 to 60 feet casts in comparison to the 80 feet or so that they can reach.

      Actually if you can cast 30-40 feet, that will work well to catch bass. No need for hero casts. Just focus on making a good cast, with solid loop, the distance will come with time and experience - just like in golfing. Perfect the swing and you will get more distance with ball as you gain strength. But key is you don't have to make huge casts to catch bass, just have fun!

      😍 really, I was always embarrassed about it. But now with my 60 feet long casting distance I'll be no more embarrassed.

      Wtf I’ve never seen anyone casting 80ft actually fishing. Are you sure you have a good idea of what 80ft looks like? That’s almost your entire fly line.
