3 years later and this is still the most useful video on the internet for a noob to both gardening and aerogardens like myself. Boy do I wish you had videos on pruning the rest of the herb kit like the parsley, dill, and mint!
Yes I remember too. You wait 3-4 weeks for a seedling to get a few leaves and if you've never pruned, it can feel scary. I hope this video helps those make the cut. Thanks for watching!
After trimming the first couple sets of leaves off do you constantly continue this process? How tall should you ultimately let the plant get to? Thanks again for the help!
If there is room to grow into, I prune for more branching... As for how tall, in the aerogarden - when it touches the lights. To be honest, we use so much basil it's always getting pruned back. I usually keep 3-4 going in the aerogarden so they each get a chance to grow back.
Wow! Thank you so much for this video and showing the actual process and progress. I can't for the morning to prune mine. They are still very young but I have harvested many leaves but never pruned.
It's tough to try it the first time. It seems like you have cut too much, but as you can see it puts the plant into a new growth stage. Go ahead and try it you will see!
Such an amazing plant. I find it pretty funny that when you go against your gut feeling (such as peeling off the leaves) it produces twice the amount when cutting the stem. And then it just keeps on going from that. OH! And it tastes fantastic as well :p Love this plant.
I've really gotten into growing herbs this year and i love it. I'm just a beginner but I've learned a lot watching your video. thank you for sharing. now if I can get my rosemary to grow I'll be ok.
It just wouldn't be a kitchen without fresh herbs in my household. I'm glad to hear the video helped. I agree, rosemary is a bit more difficult indoors. Thanks for watching!
What's the temperature, humidity percentage, and the kind of lightning they're getting? I somehow can't get this plant to work and I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong
What if you didn’t know to prune your plant and now you want to try and prune? I bought a store bought plant, it started small and now it has about 5 stems that are three or 4 nodes high. Where should I prune? Is pruning lower at the level you did better for my plant? Thanks in advance
I'm overthinking this but I've read that the smaller leaves don't count, only "full" leaves. Leave three sets of leaves under your cut? Should I also cut that large sets that were left behind? It's okay to cut smaller leaves?
Thanks for great video. One question, can I just take the leaves off to harvest? I don't want it to grow too much, not to end up having more than I can consume.
I loved this video! It’s helping me out so much, I have a very tall basil plant that I wish I would have known this a while ago. Can I ask what kind of basil this is?
I'm getting algae growth on top of the root cups I'm using for my hydroponic setup. I noticed in your video that you have yours covered with something. Is the purpose to avoid that growth? Also, I noticed that some of your unsprouted plants have cups over them. Is that to increase humidity? I've not yet been successful in getting some of my herbs to sprout and was wondering if it was a humidity issue.
Yes and yes. The green things on top of the pots are thin paper that nit only shows what seed is included in the pod, but also helps keep from having too much light and creating algae. The plastic cap looking things go over plants you are trying to get to seed (like what you'd do with seedlings). It creates more moisture and at times, you'll see the condensation in the lid. It works well!
Hi I saw your few videos. I noticed the way you grow basil. It looks like there has water underneath. Can you share how to do it in your way. I recently brought a grow light. I saw you have that too. Can you give me more info so I can grow the plants like you as a pro. Thanks
I am a TH-camr, I like your video and I had a question. My basil leaf gets burned even the new leaf is coming burned or die. NEW leaf but coming Withered and weak and die after few days. Why and how to fix it any help if you know? thanks
I wish you would go a couple more weeks because the larger it gets the more confused I get on what to prune. Like you had four shoots on one and five on the other coming up. What is the next step?
A lot of videos showing then cut off a little too low. I like your style the Little chute not the side leaves from it. I used to do this back in my cannabis growing days always served me better in my opinion you have a little more stretch before the branching in that case.
Hi Elizabeth. Yes you can use the clippings to make more plants. You can do it both ways water or/and soil. Throw them into a glass of water and in week you'll have roots and you can move them to soil. Thanks for watching!
Never prune basil, you will likely kill it. At least you will slow down the growth tremendously...in my humble experience. All I have ever managed to do is to reroot the clippings.
No, I couldn't see because your clippers got in the way AND your camera went out of focus. It also appeared you were cutting leaves which you referred to as "branches." Confusing.
This video is actually the most specific one since I've been watching how to prune Basil on internet. Thank you so much.
Thanks Jun. Glad you found it of use.

One week?! Shut the front door! I'm pruning my basil immediately! Thanks!
thanks. the 1 wk and 2 wk returns were very helpful.
straightforward yet still detailed! thank you! i also appreciate you filming over time. good to see visual results
Thx for the video. This was very informative and helpful.
This is so helpful. My first basil plant was just a long stick with a few branches of basil lol.
Thank u . Prob most useful basil I’ve found thus far
Great Video. Oh I remember my first cut for pruning! It was scary, sad, and happy all at the same time.
Yes I remember too. You wait 3-4 weeks for a seedling to get a few

I love Basil 🌿
Beat pruning video I've seen yet. Thanks!

Hello thebigmoo, I'm glad you found the video useful! Pruning can do wonders to all kinds of plants. Thanks for watching!
After trimming the first couple sets of leaves off do you constantly continue this process? How tall should you ultimately let the plant get to? Thanks again for the help!

Perfectly done.. easy to understand and the video of the plants makes it easier to see. Thanks!
Glad you found it useful. It really is an easy way to increase yield.
Best pruning video.
Great video - thank you for posting!
Best video on basil pruning.
Thank you.
Thank You Bing.
Thank you! Glad you found it useful.
Agreed!
I grow since 1981. Great tips. Beautiful
Do you ever trim off the very bottom leaves. Mine are huge.
My question as well... I don't want to make the plant look leggy, but I also don't want to waste really nice basil leaves.
Such an amazing plant. I find it pretty funny that when you go against your gut feeling (such as peeling off the leaves) it produces twice the amount when cutting the stem. And then it just keeps on going from that. OH! And it tastes fantastic as well :p Love this plant.
Couldn't agree more. Thanks for watching.
Amazing informative video to see the short term growth. Thank you
Thanks eozen81, thanks for watching.
Great. Been follow your step and advise. Its works & very useful. Thanks a lot

Best one of seen thankyou xk
but why did you cut the big leaves off?
What happens if I trim my basil above the second set of true leaves instead of the first one?
Great video
All you need is blasting music. 😂. I'm gonna prune my basil plants thanks to you.
Thanks! it's very helpful. Gonna prune mine tomorrow :)
Meshen Nee Badongen how did yours turned out?
Finally!... Thank you so much
Good video! What kind of basil is this?It looks like the Napolitana.
What's the temperature, humidity percentage, and the kind of lightning they're getting? I somehow can't get this plant to work and I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong

I love basil ‼️🌱🪴
what did you feed them to grow so fast?? mine takes months not even growing bigger or dying!
What conditions are you growing your basil in?
my basil heaps good looken of what you see all i put on every thing D/lifter
Your probably not giving it enough sun. This is the normal size for this aged plant.
Queen Rexy i put them near east windows
Gavin Gomes all herb plants are dying on me except mint lol 😂
Thank you! Nice explanation and video.
Thanks!
What tipe of fertilizer you use for your basil plants in hydroponic growing?
Hello?
Really lovely video. Wondering if can directly put the cuttings into ground instead of water? I had mixed results with that. Thanks.
I'm overthinking this but I've read that the smaller leaves don't count, only "full" leaves. Leave three sets of leaves under your cut? Should I also cut that large sets that were left behind? It's okay to cut smaller leaves?
Thank you so much super helpful
Thank you!! Just did it! Exciting stuff 😁
Glad you liked it Meagan. Thanks for watching.
How do you use all your basil?
Thanks for great video. One question, can I just take the leaves off to harvest? I don't want it to grow too much, not to end up having more than I can consume.
Very useful video thanks for sharing
Love the time delay!!!!
Thanks Ted.
Thank you.

My cinnamon basil plants are growing really slow, the seedlings are 1 week old and it is growin really slow! What i can do?
Hi I saw your few videos. I noticed the way you grow basil. It looks like there has water underneath. Can you share how to do it in your way. I recently brought a grow light. I saw you have that too. Can you give me more info so I can grow the plants like you as a pro. Thanks
He's using an Aerogarden system.
Well done!!
Thank You Corky!

Make sure your plants don't dry out. If in soil keep don't have your lights to close to the plants, or have a fan blow on them lightly.
I wish you would go a couple more weeks because the larger it gets the more confused I get on what to prune. Like you had four shoots on one and five on the other coming up. What is the next step?
Just keep doing more of the same and go larger! They are very forgiving plants.
Do you do any further pruning (other than to stop it from going to seed) beyond what you showed in this video?
Would also like to know the answer to this.
A lot of videos showing then cut off a little too low. I like your style the Little chute not the side leaves from it. I used to do this back in my cannabis growing days always served me better in my opinion you have a little more stretch before the branching in that case.
Can you use the clipping to root and make more plants? Would you stick it in water or soil for rooting?
Hi Elizabeth. Yes you can use the clippings to make more plants. You can do it both ways water or/and soil. Throw them into a glass of water and in week you'll have roots and you can move them to soil. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely! If i take a larger cutting, I do that to pass plants on to family and friends! Thanks for watching.
Wow! Didn't know you could do that. 😍
Just a week?? How can that be. To get that growth on mine its at least two. Is it because of gro-lights?
is your plant in soil? This type of growth is typical in aerogarden/hydroponic setups.
@@BackToBasics001 Do plants in soil take longer?
Like the video.
thanks so much!
Your welcome Carlea! Thanks for watching.
I like how he says basil
It's taking a LONG time_the way he's pruning*
You pronounce 'basil' in the american way at the beginning and in the british way at the end !
You are the second goober that I have ever heard pronounce it baah-sil. The other 83.417 people pronounced it bay-sil.
In the UK, _nobody_ pronounces it 'bay-sil', although having said that, this guy obviously isn't English.
You had to ruin this by calling it bazl
I would love to watch your video, but until you learn to say the word "Basil" I just can't watch this!!😂😂😂😂😂
