  • Broken USB and HDMI connectors are very common jobs in the workshop and can be quite profitable. Replacing these tiny connectors is quite easy, even with basic tools. Here is how to do it.

    I basically do it the same way except I like to use a much finer soldering tip to resolder the tabs. I've also had good results using solder paste on the tabs and a heat gun letting it simply reflow. But as you stated, we all have our preferred methods. What works well for one person might not be the best for another.

    Around the 21min mark you said 'This is the point where you should not mess with it anymore . . . . but I always do', and my wifes voice pops up near me and she said with a grin . . . "You are just like him, if its done dont keep messing with it" 😅

    In one of the first videos of this series you recommended Soldering Needles. I've found them very useful for clearing out all sorts of holes, but have never seen you use them. Getting the last of the solder out of the mounting holes was just the moment to get them out!

  • @TheTubejunky

    Pro tip a can of air and a soldering iron work well together. Just shoot a blast of air after heating the solder to clear those holes immediately.

    I am glad it took you a long time to clear those holes since I had exactly the same problem and thought I was doing something wrong but it did clear in the end. Persistence seems to be the key.

      Just use vacuum tool with hot air together

  • @CiderPang27
    @CiderPang27 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If you get a port attached to a ribbon and hot air can't be used all you have to do is flood the top of the port with solder and keep the iron on it. The heat transfers through to the joints enabling the port to be lifted away. Also handy if you have plastics right next to the port.

    Another great, helpful video. Definitely buy the desoldering wire with flux already in it. Night and day difference even after adding my own flux to my non-fluxed wire. Following the advice in this video I've just taken off about 15 SMD items from a board that I'll be able to reuse. Thank you ☺

    Low melt solder on the legs hot air on the bottom with the board upside down port drops off. A bit more low melt on the holes allows cleaning solder out. Touching the small contacts on replacement port with a bit of solder then putting port down and hitting it w hot air works as well.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well Greg I did say at the start there are other ways of doing this. None are right or wrong IMHO just do it the way that you find works for you. Your method sounds interesting, I haven't seen that particular way before

    • @GregM
      @GregM ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LearnElectronicsRepair Yes more than 1 way to skin the cat so to speak. The low melt solder keeps the ground posts solder liquid and allows gravity to work on jack and allows wicking of the solder USUALLY unless Murphy shows up ;) Applying solder to the replacement jack contacts cuts down the iron use afterwards most of the time.

    Try a bit of hot air on the wick when the iron is on the wick to get the holes clear in one pass

    Hi Richard, thanks for the video. I know you don't like those el cheapo manual solder sucker pumps, but for clearing holes they are better and faster than braid, in my experience. I am sure they don't compare to your electric pump, but if all some has are basic tools, I think they are worth having.

      @@LearnElectronicsRepair The more expensive ones with the soft silicon tips look better than the cheaper ones that I have. If I can get a bit of silicon tube I will replace the hard tip on mine. Is fish tank tubing silicon these day? That might make the cheaper ones a little better. Best wishes Richard. 😀

      @@LearnElectronicsRepair I own the silver and blue (branded silver line tech) desoldering pump along with the black and green one too. Found the black and green one better personally but it’ll be interesting to see how your mileage varies. I’m sure a pro aluminium series one from RS electronics would blow them out the water due to what the other chap said about the cheap tips. Just north of £30 in the uk for that one

      @@LearnElectronicsRepair I disagree, I have used a manual plunger type solder sucker for years and it makes light work removing solder from through holes. I have also noticed on previous videos your electric vacuum desoldering gun seems very weak compared to others I've seen on TH-cam. Perhaps you need to review your desoldering equipment in general and replace with better kit. 😊😊

    My teacher in soldering classes loved my work so much he had me do all the smd's and with only an iron. Yeah I was mature age 33 when I did full time electronics and the rest were young guys. And for our American friends taught by the very first electronics teacher over on the first fleet with a speech impediment, (or maybe he did it as an ongoing joke?) - "soddering classes" :P Yes I'm joking, I know you are having a go at the Chinese when you say sodder LOL you rucky guys, they fix your pone! On Xbox series x due to the board thickness I use aluminum soldering and a hot air station (best)to make sure I don’t lift a pad by accident. I then tin the connector and the pads with leaded solder. I then use hot air for the new connector and a iron for the legs and any touch up.

      I think you will find that was before I realised I had broken it, which I showed on one of my vidoes (I'd pushed a few mm of the the little metal tube that runs down the centre of the heating element into the glass compartment and the solder kept solidifying on the cooler part of the tube). Since I bought a replacement gun it is working good again and I now know what *not* to do when cleaning it! Most likely now I will buy a replacement heating element for the original handle and then I will have a spare one
