Great video. I got given one of these by my sister who upgraded. This is the clearest video that I have watched. I'm going to double the ram to 16gb and a 2nd ssd. It has an H10 Intel Optane 256 + 16gb m.2.

Very good video. I cleaned the fan after watching another video and was baffled why the two corners or the case popped up after loosening the screw and also wondered why it wouldn't come out. Now I understand so thanks for pointing that out! However, I did notice that a few of the "tabs" broke off even though I was very careful about splitting open the case with a plastic blade. It doesn't seem to make a difference though as enough are intact and the screws hold the case together. Just thought I would point that out and see if you have experienced these tabs breaking too.

Regarding your question, yes it is very very common that those tabs break they are nothing to worry about as the screws do the main job, those tabs will break always depending how toasty and or old is the plastic. absolutely no worries.

@@uFixTek Hello! Just reporting back... the laptop is definitely running cooler after following all of these instructions. One thing I did notice is the old thermal paste had spread out over the surface of the top of the CPU to what I believe are little resistors or other electronic parts around the perimeter of the CPU. At first I thought they were just dabs of solder from devices mounted underneath but now believe they were actual devices so I hope the light scrubbing I did on them with my alcohol wipes (the kind that comes in the foil packages) didn't do any harm. I wasn't sure how important it was to get the thermal paste off of this area and eventually used a very soft baby toothbrush dipped in alcohol that really did the trick. To be sure all was fine after all this cleaning after everything was back together, I ran the full complement of Dell diagnostics and everything checked out fine so guess it's all good. I want viewers to know that there is also a great CPU temperature monitoring app called CoreTemp that I now installed and I noticed at least a 20C drop in temperature during Cinebench CPU testing. Before the thermal paste job, it reached 99C and afterward 70-80C. The fan is also coming on a lot less. and hovers around 42C or so while doing light work on the laptop even during the heat of the day with ambient temps in the house a bit over 80F. Finally, could you recommend your favorite CPU monitoring widget? I played around with TaskManager today for hours trying to get it to stay in the task tray so I could also keep an eye on CPU percent as well as CPU temp but noted when the pc is rebooted, it disappears until you launch TaskManager again. Thanks again for an awesome video AND actually responding to viewer questions and comments. I note a lot of TH-cam creators put out great videos but don't seem to respond to any questions or even comments. Well done!!

It's my pleasure my friend. The thermal paste on the capacitors around the CPU/GPU die is totally safe and won't cause any issues. I enjoy making videos and offering help through comments. With over 17 years of repair experience, I'm here to assist and share my knowledge to make others happy.

@@uFixTek Thanks. So are you saying I didn't really need to remove all the old thermal paste that had overflowed from original application onto the capacitors OR it was fine that I removed it by gently scrubbing with my alcohol wipes and soft baby toothbrush? Also, any apps your recommend so the cpu use will always remain showing in task tray? I'm loving CoreTemp for CPU temp in task tray but want something to also show cpu percent.

exactly you don't really need to clean the paste around the crystal dye of the GPU/CPU , BUT if you like to clean it the way you did, it is fine, i always say clean work makes you feel better and happier.
for the cpu info on task manager i highly recommend: hwinfo free and you can set TEMP and CPU usage GPU and all to show in task bar beside the clock.

    Hi there!
I did that in my Dell inspiron 15 5000 series, but i didn`t disconect the battery before doing everything, now the speakers are not working.
Do you know how i could fix it?
I`ve already updated the audio firmware but there`s still no sound. I`ve got sound with bluetooth headphones, but none out of the speakers.
    Thank you!

regarding your question: double check the cable connections on motherboard, if all connections are solid, then you have shorted something on motherboard. unfortunately you have to take it to a good technician to do a diagnostic on your motherboard, there is nothing you can do with software. :( sorry that this happened to you, but you always always have to disconnect the battery before service.

The only one i dont like in this laptop, is the casing, no matter how many times u clean, the temperature is still rising. Bcause its so thinn.

yes it is true , but to open and cleaning is one of the easy laptops to do so, also you can clean the fan without removing the heat-sink, unlike other models and brands. but they do have a very thin heatpipe :/
