I edited this episode in one hour! thanks for watching everyone!
Workflow is peak
BAHahahaha 😂
Are you serious? So fast
I watched this video in one hour! Thank you
Bro's cookin
Love the usual format, but theres something special about seeing the whole uncut process! Hope you do more of these in the future
Thanks. This video was a mammoth to perform and edit and required a lot more man hours so can’t do them too often but if there’s enough demand we would definitely have to do more
We demand. Happy to stumble across your channel, my favorite production youtuber I've come across@@jonmakesbeats
Jon you’re so down to earth mang, we appreciate you and benefit from seeing this process so much brotha. Thank you!
Glad you took something from this
who the hell is mang ?
This is honestly so validating. I'm not the only one who fumbles around in a key on the keyboard before finding something.
Now if I can just learn how to pick a drum break and move to the next track instead of deep diving into every single hit, tuning and adding FX, and taking so long to move to the bass line that I'm sick of the beat and just start over.
Art is all about fucking up until you don’t
@@jonmakesbeats fuck me if that isn’t a perfect expression of the lesson I keep trying to teach myself as a creative
I struggled with this for years until I tried arranging the beat really early on and thinking of variations as I went. You'll always go back and make adjustments anyway, so why not wait to fine tune it later? Good luck to you anyway!
@@AnimusBehemoth you're romanticizing it. That's why you struggle to finish things. Creating a finished product vs just creating
@@bennyfairfax1that's also true for mixing. I started by fine tuning every individual channel from front to back before moving on to the next one, just to fine tune it again and again when the context changed later. Someday I realized that this is just a huge waste of time.
My approach now is to always tackle the biggest global problem first and then work my way to the more subtle adjustments (not top-down mixing though). Saves so much redundant work.
A full hour! Just what i needed today.
Thanks for watching
"You make it look so easy!"
*demands TWO hour video next time*
But in all seriousness, as a fan of about 15 years, I know you don't just whip stuff up in a few minutes and beat's done. It's been awesome seeing your process, whether it's in the bite size videos or the longer ones. Hopefully both formats work for different subsets of the same audience. Keep it up!
I decided to make this video ignoring what it might do on TH-cam. I’m glad we did and whether or not it does well it was an experience . Thanks for watching it
@@jonmakesbeats I'm always down for something ignoring The Algorithm!
This channel randomly came up in my feed. I bought your wayniac CD you were hocking out of a 45 travel case at best soup where the cd jacket was sharpied on notebook paper. Congrats on your success. RIP Ras
Shout out Ras
3 minutes in and you hooked me . I love to watch the process. Thanks
Much love, Zac
Maybe I'm one of the rare cases of people who found out about you from this channel, and not your music beforehand. I really thought you were a small TH-camr, but in reality you're pretty big. I really love these videos, and they are inspiring me tenfold. Thank you so much!
Thanks for checking it out. Glad to have you around the channel
This video was inspirational from the get go. Honestly I’m only 10 minutes into the video and I feel like this has already opened up so many doors and limitations I had producing my own beats. Watching your content is what originally inspired me to start making beats this year and I feel like so many questions I would never ask are answered here
That’s awesome. I’m glad this provided you a resource like that
Hands down this is one of the best hours I've spent watching you tube! Thank you for sharing a very transparent process in your creative method. Salute!
Thanks for watching, Teddy
Yup, even in a 1hr video - he makes it look so easy!
Cheers thanks for watching
Great beats as usual and I really appreciate this upload. A lot of people, especially younger or new producers get this false impression that experienced producers are like these super human gods that can reach for 5 to 10 elements in 15 minutes and whip up a banger on the spot and that's just not reality at all. Now can you sometimes pull it off that way? Sure, but 70 percent of the time it takes hours fishing around to craft a cohesive sound that's balanced and can expand to a whole song. Making music can feel exhilarating when it goes right but it's not always this glamorous, sexy thing and it involves time, dedication, and constantly researching music theory or new production techniques. One thing I wish I had done more of back in my teens and 20s that hardly anybody told me to do, which is the simplest thing in the world...read the manual or help files for yourself to fully understand the hardware or software you're working with. You'd be amazed with how many wonderful features are hidden in there and can gain a better understanding with the things you think you know.
Yuup reading the manual is so important. Too bad it sucks as an experience haha
Jon - makes a bunch of good beats in an hour
The rest of us - find a good kick in an hour 😂
To be fair I did use drum loops
@jonmakesbeats thought you were going Gorillaz on the first one when you picked out the drum loop. Cool how you transformed it.
love seeing someone else cook up on an MPC like I was right there. I've been loving my One for about 5 years now and still find new things to do with it. definitely my favorite piece of gear to cook up on. keep at it bro 💯
Thanks for watching!
@@jonmakesbeats I've been a fan for a lil while now, very inspiring, and thank you for the insights given bro! keep on shining 🔥
Killer rhythm sense you got Jon! the bass in the first beat is just mind blowing.
Good job buddy. Thanks for inviting us into the session, enjoyed it
Thanks for joining
Thank you for all you do, been and always will be a huge inspiration to me
dude this is my favorvite video of yours so far. the beats are so dope. and I love hearing the ideas flow. would love more vids like these so im subbing to the Patreon rn.
very inspiring content. appreciate what y'all do.
We’d love to have you!
this is the type of video I needed when I was just starting out, the full uncut process of making beats. great job
Hopefully it serves as that for others
Great setup. I like that you showed how long it takes to make a complete song. It takes me about 45 minutes to an hour and I make everything from scratch. So much respect 🫡!
It usually takes me much longer. This is just a fun challenge
@@jonmakesbeats cool 😎. So do you really like the new Mpc workflow form the octatrack?
Damn, you got a couple of banging board games too buddy. Should do a beats and boardgame thing.
Love board games
u so wholesome man, i really love your content and the effort you put in
Thanks for watching, Diego
This was a lot of fun man I love how you keep pushing the channel. This was a good idea. Let's try with another sampler!
Thanks for checking it out! And maybe in the future…This video was expensive haha.
This is a great idea. I'm gonna try this since I've been so stuck on the tiny details without being able to finish anything for myself lately
You should. cutting and moving on is really freeing and teaches you how to use your intuition and trust your gut as you work.
Thank you for making this video and explaining how long it takes for you to make solid beat. TH-cam made me think I need to make best beats in 15 minutes else I'm bad.
There’s no correlation between time spent on something and how good it is. Masterpieces have been made in minutes but so has a lot of trash lol
Ahh, okay - that makes sense. 3 hour videos stuffed into 10 minutes did make it seem like you were a magical sound wizard.
I still can't make a song in a night, but now it seems more achievable.
There’s no correlation between time spent and quality. “However long it takes” should be your goal always.
This was a wonderful session. I appreciate the long format, it's really awesome and has a more natural feel to it. cheers
It was definitely a fun video to do. Glad you enjoyed it!
@@jonmakesbeats Do you still go by jonwayne?
Man, this is great! Also want to say that I love your space and how it's laid out
Thanks! Took me a while to set it up this way but glad I did
That first beat is crazy! Hope you keep doing these! Super fun to watch, along with inspiring!
Thanks for checking it out
Love the rawness. So real. And very inspiring!
I’m glad you appreciated it
Im always inspired by your workflow man. How you sample yourself on the fly is amazing.
It’s a fun workflow. You should try it
I LOVE the sounds and chord progression on that 3rd track. I need to get to work!
Thanks for checking it out
I heard that lead on the first beat as soon as you started that baseline.... Abd you brought it in.... So sick
Much love
Appreciate the long video Hamish, watching now thanks
Hope you enjoy!
I am blown away by this video! Great to see the “warts and all” as you put it.
It puts my mind at ease knowing even a maestro like yourself has to do a bunch of takes.
Feels bad sometimes when you can’t get the idea down. This gives me hope that it’s worth the grind to get a good take 😅.
Don’t believe all of these people making it look like second nature to one take everything. Some are virtuosos but most people making good music stumble in the dark until they find the light switch, like me. Thanks for checking it out
@27:10 - you see those 5 directory icons on top of the browser screen? those are your location shortcuts: navigate to your favourite location (eg. breaks), hold shift and tap one of those icons - congratulations, you've just saved your first shortcut ;)
I can create the shortcuts but when I open them straight from the project start they're blank. I'll admit I might not be seeing something super obvious
@@jonmakesbeats I think , I see, where you might getting it wrong, exactly @27:07 you're trying to view and load a .wav sample but your browser filter is set to kits/programs (third icon from the left - right below "search" input field), in order to change to unfiltered view with all of your files, you need to set your browser filter to one of the last two icons (as you have it @27:20). Unless you're saying that you can't see any wavs even if you change the filter ? (couldn't replicate that). Reason for such behaviour is that after loading the project, yopu entering the browser via drumkit browse icon, this sets the browser default filtering to drumkit program files only (expose .xpm and hides the .wav) for easy selection of different premade kits.
Woooow Amazing Video, and I'm just realizing that Jonwayne has this channel here, and I'm checking for new songs every now and then.
Thanks for checking it out!
23:37 that synth hits me in the right parts of the brain, love seeing the process!
Thanks for checking it out!
As some one who is trying to learn the mpc workflow this was nice man 🙏🏽
Glad you took something from it!
Loved it. I hope some takeaway is that beats aren't just drums, and there is a process.
Thanks for watching, Tony. Yeah man drums are just the beginning
this is super dope. i’d love to see a nice in between of this and your usual shorter videos. maybe a 30 minute video here n there where you try something that’s outside of your comfort zone? idk. either way love your work and Rap Album 2 will always hold a special place in my heart
I’ve got a few videos like that on the channel in that range. Thanks for checking this out!
@ will def go back n peep those, thank u ❤️🫡
Soooo useful man. Thanks for uploading this, tons of others would not have since it probably won't do as well as the typical format. I'd love to see how you expand on these to make them into full tracks, too (that's something I usually struggle with). Much love bro!
Thanks for watching. I don't have any plans for arrangement focus anytime soon but all of these beats are finished on the Patreon in their final arrangements.
Great video fam! I really like your styles... I use to make all my beats from scratch but for the past few years I've mostly been sample chopping. You've really inspired me to go back to make some beats from nothing. Thanks 🙏
Inspiration is what this channel is all about
Hey Jon! Love the video man. Been a supporter of your channel since day 1. Keep it up dawg! It's fire 🔥
Thanks for the support!
loved this! my problem is i have a whole lot of beats and idea sessions, but struggle to flesh out full songs with them.
Any thoughts on how to take beats and flesh them out into full songs?
I will probably never reach this comfort level of creativity, but its soothing and relaxing to watch you create. Many thanks Jon, cheers from Athens
This is great. Would love to see you do the same with the Octatrack too.
Definitely down to do that if there's enough interest. This is kind of an unproven format on TH-cam so let's see how this one goes. Thanks for checking it out!
@@jonmakesbeatsSP-404MKII too!!
@jonmakesbeats I will vouch for this idea! Would be interesting to see how the workflow fares in comparison! Also, maybe different limitations like using samples or different synths
@@jonmakesbeats this! but I miss the Octatrack videos :D
@@jonmakesbeats Yes dude. The Octatrack videos just hit different
This inspired me to pick up and go again with music. Recently I have been feeling like no creative ideas are flowing, but hearing your thought process while making beats has got me itching to sit down and try it again.
Amazing man, thanks for all of your beats. its really nice to be able to watch your whole creative process
I really hope Jon got that Akai sponsorship
@AkaiProVideo
Your videos give momentum to that part of my brain that needs some inspiration to kick out some tracks. Your creativity and whimsical Melodies don’t go unnoticed! Keep doing your thing
I think this might be my favourite video yet, I’m sat here feeling the mood. I’m meant to be producing myself, definitely inspired. Keep up the good work 👌🏾👊🏾💪🏾
The panic towards the end lol
It was very real
Man when that vocoder sound hit the third beat 😇 it got angelic af haha amazing as always man! Thank you 🤙
I was so happy when I found that sound
do you ever "force" yourself into making a specific type of beat or usually go with the flow, do whatever you feel? I struggle at making dark boom bap beats lol, they always go happy and so on...curious. Big up Jon!
I don’t really think hard enough to force anything. I just kind of go with the flow and if it sounds good I just go in that direction
@@jonmakesbeats ah yes, makes sense…cool man, been watching all your vids! Love how smooth things get together all the time! All the best Jon, much love from Romania!
Honestly loved this. I felt like i was in the studio with you talking to the screen with a chord suggestion for the last chord lmao then im like wait he cant hear me. Then i ended up freestyling on the first beat. This video is a whole vibe.
great job Neil
love this content man gives me a ton of inspiration keep on grinding
inspiration is the whole point of the channel. Thanks for watching
Your T-shirts are probably one of the most comfortable shirts I’ve ever worn. I kinda want to order 3-4 more. Highly recommended.
Thank you Jon for doing what you do!
I’m gonna be honest I’m a little upset I can’t wear my own shirts when going out into the world because they are that comfortable. Gotta keep them for when I work.
@@jonmakesbeats you wearing them on your channel allows me to put on a wig and be JMB for a Halloween costume. 🤣
7 minutes in and you're already cookin' hot 😁Love that beat! The bass reminds me of the one in Dilla's E=mc2
Love that track
Thanks for this John this sparks so many ideas!
That’s awesome. Thanks for watching and I’m glad it got something going for you
Been listening since 'you took your time' on Radio 1 - how have I only just found this channel?! Epic - keep it up bro
Thanks for watching. This channel has been a grassroots project since day one so the only people who are here are those who have arrived organically. Glad it’s come across your timeline
40-41 min goes crazy
I was floating for sure
I genuinely hate to ask but how did you get to that page at 2:00?
That’s the step sequencer. You can find that in the menu and the MPC One also has a dedicated button shortcut
@@jonmakesbeats you’re the man thanks so much!
Awesome video format Jon. You are an inspiration to me and many others.
Ton of inspiration from this one, your videos give me so much peace too!
That’s great to hear. Thanks for watching
What’s your thought process around arrangement? You always nail the next layer with ease and I wandered if you like to incorporate them in the order you play them? Or is there more thought to it than that?
I layer things as I see fit and then when it comes time to arrange I just do it on the fly with mutes. All of these tracks are now finished on the Patreon and they are arranged and sound different than on here. Thanks for asking
It may be late cause you're making beats with the MPC more now and getting used to the workflow. However, I'd be curious to see what you think of the NI Maschine + workflow. I've been working with the Maschine + for almost two years and opted to get that over the MPC because the workflow looked nicer/easier than MPC. I also just like the interface more on Maschine +.
I'm digging the long format though! I used to give myself an hour (during my lunch break) to see what I could come up with and I love the pressure of just going with ideas as they come out during that time crunch. Keep it up!
I actually picked one of those up not too long ago. They’re suuuper cheap now for some reason. When I get some headspace I’ll do something
@@jonmakesbeats sweeeeet can’t wait to see what you get up to 🙌🏼
I love this video thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Would be awesome to see some sample type on beats on being made on the mpc!
It would be…gotta be careful with samples on the channel now. They’ll get you out in these TH-cam streets
I would love a video on how you setup is wired. From the keys to the pedal to thee MPC
I’m working on a comprehensive video that goes over my whole setup
Love this video! This uncut music production style is the same format I attempt to follow on my channel, but yours is much better executed 😆 Also the Megaman game in the background adds a certain je ne sais quoi 👌🏾
Megaman was watching over my shoulder making sure everything was banging
Love this style of video, hope to see more uncut stuff!
Thanks for watching
Hey Jon, thank you so much for the video, the only thing that was making me a bit sad was a Minimoog voyager going moldy in a corner 😂I like your workflow, can you please make a Tutorial how you set up and use the Mpc with your waldorf?
What workflow do you sincerely prefer between octa and mpc ? I’m a octa user and your video inspired me a lot for the vibes, even if i do other things. But sure mpc is a powerful machine.
It’s hard to say. They’re just two different flavors. I’ll definitely make two different beats using them.
Very cool Jon
Nice.... That's what i was waiting for!
Thanks for the support
The bass on the third track is straight fire 🔥
Thanks
We love you Jon ❤
Merci
love the mpc vids Jon!
or Barry, or whoever is making me a beat today
Jon with the rare appearance
Would love to see the full process of a sample based beat. Seeing the process of looking for a sample and moment when you find a crazy one would be fun. I understand if copyright stuff would make it hard for a TH-cam video tho
Great video as always Jon
It can be tricky with samples. Not just copyright but the way I work with them it takes me way longer. Would be much more difficult to make that uncut process captivating
i love your videos on the mic one, i was curious why your screen look so much different than mine on many of the windows though, how do i get my device formatted like yours instead of how it come stock?
There’s a new beta firmware. Look up on TH-cam how to install it
Ohhhh yeah baby ,let's gooo 🎉 thank u ❤
Thanks for watching!
Yurrr
Also thanks to the team and captain Jon for putting out this W of an hour long video
It was a ton of work but sometimes you have an idea in your head and you just need to get it out. Regardless, I'm glad we were able to get it done.
sweet tunes my dude
Thanks for listening
@@jonmakesbeats your a sound motivator and a good dude ! thanks for the gems you provide !
love this drum sounds. Are they from akai??
No I got them from drumbroker.com
Great stuff Tarquin!
Thanks for watching
I dont have that long loading after selecting new project. could be related to the missing plugin pop up you got after? try deleting that one if you dont use it anymore.
Definitely could Be. I’ll look into it
I loved this, so cool
Super dope!🔥
Thanks for checking it out
This is very inspiring
Glad you took inspiration!
This isnt your normal style of video but if you’re familiar with it… are you able to make a video showing how to use automation on the mpc? When I had the mpc renaissance, automation was easy on the plain lo/hi/band pass filters. Now I have to stumble my way into automating those effects while making beats.
Maybe you could make that video because I probably know less about that then you do lol
@@jonmakesbeats I’ll give that a try this weekend… every video on TH-cam goes deep into automating external plugins and their favorite brands of energy drinks or other unnecessary info lol
On my MPC Live 2 I am still using 2.15.1 until they get all the issues solved with 3.0 then I will switch over and I already know how to use it watching y’all
A man with a plan
@@jonmakesbeats you are me too keep it going
@@jonmakesbeats I know you own a record player give us some record sampling
Love this! Could you give us some general info about your template? I wana emulate this setup but with other gear and such. Just have a couple audio tracks ready to record into? Any busses, resample, or midi tracks? Thank you for the knowledge and inspiration ❤
I'll have to throw it up on the Patreon soon but yeah just open audio tracks and some choice plugins on each one that are disabled in case I need them later. Thanks for checking it out!
@@jonmakesbeats dope thank you! I’ll upgrade my membership in Pateon🔥
Do you have a single key you typically mess around in on the keyboard? Any thoughts on good ways to explore notes and harmony n all that? Thanks Barry
F sharp major, B major…I’ve heard enough music I like to know what I like when I’m playing it. I don’t know a lot of theory
hey, man, first of all, thank you for the music. been listening to your stuff since '16. secondly, was wondering, is there a full version of a song called "The Single"?
first beat very flumey i love it!
