    Jon has been one of the best kept secrets in LA for 10+ years now. His beats are full of passion and phenomenal. And if you’ve ever been blessed enough to hear him rap he is imo one of the most prolific writers on the planet. It’s obvious why he isn’t a larger act, but damn Jon is one of the illest breathing.
    This was an awesome video btw! Just wanted to give Jon his flowers haha

      I don't think you know what the word prolific means.
      Prolific means (and only means, no room for interpretation or opinion here) something with a large amount of works. It means you have _a lot_. It does not signify quality in any way.
      I learned this about 10 years ago and it is 100% the right way to use it. Anything else, just find another word for it.

      Crazy thing is he does have a lot of music out weird how that works. It’s not like avenged sevenfold level but bro has made a couple albums he has a wide range of music to choose from. That makes him prolific.

    I was watching Boon Doc and Damu the Fudgemonk religiously for a year straight after discovering Dilla and Dj Shadow the year before (probably 2006/2007). Worked my ass off winter break first semester of college, doing double shifts for the entire month at a ski resort near my mom’s house. Bought an mpc2000 cash for $500 at the end of that winter break from a guy I worked with ironically enough. Those first 6 to 9 months, I made some of the ugliest, nastiest beats… I really don’t even want to remember those ones but after about a year it’s like something clicked and I’ve never stopped since. Now there’s a ton more hardware, vintage, synthesizers, and petals but Back then I was literally just saving every dollar I could and on the weekends hitting up Hymies Records in Minneapolis. Honestly, making beats also made me a better DJ and vice versa. Basically have taken a break for the last 9 months but soon as my business slowed down for the winter the tascam was back on my kitchen table and the amps were dusted off. I’ll never be a career musician (I just don’t got the chops and mind for it) but as a therapist said to me a long time ago when I was going through some heavy shit: “you should never stop making music, it’ll always be there, ready and waiting for you to pick back up when you want to.”

    Lil Jon Lance Wayne is definitely a fire beat maker. Ever since i moved from drumming, to electronic drumming, now to flipping samples and making beats I've enjoyed his videos. my main samplers is the mpc 1000, sp 404 mk2, and the polyend tracker. I have an mpc one but honestly haven't used the sampler engine to chop yet (idk what im sleeping on, i keep buying plugins and instruments for it) kind of wish i got the live 2 so i could play in my bed.
    Tho watching him on the octatrack makes me want to play with one soooo bad. I have a Model cycles and thought about model samples but honestly should just get a digitakt or octatrak
    Also i appreciate the Boon Doc video (mpc 1000 sighting), and rad you got one also! I recently did the fat pad upgrade because my top row of pads i had to smack with a full fist to get it to work.

    • @Labergemusic
      @Labergemusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment! I've kept it oldschool mostly, I liked both the MPC and OT for their small screen to big buttons ratio. I should do those upgraded pads on day.

    I don't make hip hop (dark techno guy here) or use an octatrack (I do have a digitakt & syntakt though, go elektron) but I follow Jon firstly because I respect him as an artist (his albums are great), secondly because his creative philosophising is both interesting and thoughtful, and thirdly because he's basically entertaining to watch.

    Good video for the time. Aged badly.

      @Labergemusic  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well said, I think it happens to a lot of people. After I made this video he just kind of fell off my homepage. The SP404 was kind of the channels creative peak but then who am I to talk I made one real video since this one.

      @@Labergemusic No no, your video is really good and I'm actually surprised you agree with what I said. You did really good and you were early. What people want from a youtube channel is for it to evolve, he went the exact opposite way to keep his patreons.
      Also agreed, we watch the sp404 video every 2 months here in the studio. Don't even know why it's that one in particular.

    • @notreally-sf3df
      @notreally-sf3df 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jonmakesbeats Hey, didn't expect you to see this, or see it so quickly.
      You deserve a legit answer!
      We talk about you all the time here in the studio, because we're entering a new phase of content and you're a very good example of how it should be done in 2024. Actually had a 2 hour yap session with chatgpt about what you were doing and why it WORKS to make the same video over and over. We actually think it's a really good idea and something we've never really seen before in such a specific way.
      I noticed it after you came back 3 months ago after being more sporadic. Someone cracked a joke about it and then every thumbnail on our frontpage confirmed it to the point of us all going "wow he really is making the same video with a different thumbnail text and title, yet he keeps most viewers".
      It is probably partly because you modified your studio setup. You have that setup, so you do things that way. Here in our studio, we actually have a LOT of hardware that is just sitting to the left of me (OP-1 field, chompi, polyend tracker, zoia etc, all the more modern crazy stuff), even though it's set up on at table/wall with $500 of cables and a solution to do both individual tracks to the computer and completely dawless with a sd card. To use that setup, I'm going to have to use the daw less and I'm just so excited about new-ish software and the workflow I have to dump that and go stand up at the table, so it's something that is disabling me at the moment as opposed to enabling me with all its possibilities. My current situation of working on multiple genres and styles is definitely not helping.
      So, let's define why i'm saying "the same video over and over". 10ish months ago, you had a good version of youtuber brain when something was different per video (soundfonts, sampling a plugin, 5 things) and was easily communicated in a thumbnail and title. This was effectively the same video, you with your visual setup, your gear and doing something with a slight twist. Before that, you had a unique take on dawless, but it didn't need specific pre-communicated twists since you were so unique in what you did and you had your initial boom. Stopping at the "worse laptop" video, you took a bit of a break, did the studio modifications and now you are effectively making the exact same video every time again, but the shine of "dawless octatrack guy" is gone. You can do the odd yap-video (yours was good!) and then 5 more of the same video etc, but it's more obvious that it's "another Jon" video now than it has ever been before, which makes it less special. This is definitely something every lifer goes through in the "mid-phase" of a newer endeavour, so it's nothing new; but you were the first person that made me realize that it IS the same video every single time, because you were always associated with some sort of shine anchoring your very obvious skills and dedication.
      So, in the last month, we've figured out how we could basically start the way you're doing it right now, then pivot to the shine. What we found in our research was that anything you do with a challenge involved is really good. It's not about using a sp-404 or a mpc one, having new gear all the time; it's about the session we're shadowing you on being its own thing. There'll always be a subsect of people who see the individual beat as one (and it does work for me at times too), but including some modifier that sets up each session is what we've found to be key. It could be simple and you should still be in a relaxed/fun/chill mindset.
      Here are some things we've figured out for our new endeavour. The style of music we want to highlight is quite ambient and nice to listen to, but can still be very technical and production-heavy. I wanted to do a video of how to incorporate generative techniques, which is a very heavy topic; but through some brainstorming and exclusion we figured out that a video on making music that basically becomes your own personal "lofi girl" channel just for your own enjoyment would be the way to tackle such a heavy handed topic. If that goes well, we could do variation videos of that in the form of more meditative sounding long pieces or simply resampling these into songs; it could spawn 10 more videos easily because of the inherent appeal of the randomness that generative music can enable despite seeming completely out of reach for the common person.
      Another thing about the particular style is the combination of organic and synthethic elements. Making synthethic sounds sound like organic foley is one way to do it and using granular synths with organic recordings is another way to do it. That's 2 videos right there, but we could also repeat that multiple more ways by sometimes mentioning granular synthesis specifically in the title and sometimes using a free granular plugin and tout "this feels like cheating, for free!"; easily creating 10 variations of a simple concept like that by also sometimes focusing on the alluring repetitiveness of one 8-bar loop, sometimes focusing on a a/b switch and sometimes focus on a complete full length piece. Other variations would be to resample your voice once in the context of a normal beat, see if people catch on to it, then do a full-length beat video anchored by voice, then a more "educational" approach to it (which could go pretty personal and fuckaround-y) and then finally do a video on the tool/technique people seem to resonate with the most. That enables 4+ videos all based on the running feedback you're getting from your community on each video.
      In our opinion, the latter concept is what's kind of missing on your channel in the last few months, but we do really like how you've not fallen off and manage to keep going. That's what inspired us to tackle this topic and figure it out for ourselves. Let me know if anything resonated, thanks for the content!
