you forgot genius skill level (A Tribe called Quest; Daft Punk): taking samples from several different songs and put it together so it sounds like from a single source
Alchemists just found a sound and used it as an instrument. That's very creative, but only he heard that in his head to create it. So just do what sounds good.
As a DJ Premier fanboy, the thumbnail seems quite offensive. He's got many beats with more intricate chopping, the drum programming and sample selection are always amazing and then he's got the skills and knowledge to scratch in some vocals for the hook that match the theme of the track. And without a DAW too. Doesn't seem "easy" to me...
@@marcelwk I mean in the context of the video it makes sense and isn’t offensive. But all things considered, seeing Kanye in a thumbnail shown as making a crazy flip and Preemo making an easy flip is funny. Cause Kanye’s chipmunk beats were pretty straightforward for the most part (Bink and Just Blaze > Kanye producer wise). Whereas Preemo has some of the nastiest chopping skills (Vol 1 intro, Boom) but also is the king of short loops (Mental Stamina). I’m a Kanye fan but I don’t trust any of his production post CD/LR has much to do with him. He’s surrounded by producers who are better than him nowadays
I think it's more of the beats picked as opposed to the producers themselves, cause dj premier has "harder" beats and easier beats, same with someone like The Alchemist he's got "easy" beats but also hard as well, I don't think it meant the producers themselves but I understand what you mean, I'd hate to see preemo disrespected as well
Came here to say the same thing. Also, as a producer it’s kind of bogus to have Kanye on the thumbnail instead of Bink! since he rarely gets credit for producing the track, and it’s something producers deal with all the time. I understand that the thumbnail is meant to attract viewers but come on man, this is a producer channel isn’t it??
Using space is a big issue for me when it comes to sampling, or knowing how much of a sample to use and balancing it with stuff like fills and SFX. I like what Premo does where he takes a low pitched stab to fill out space (e.g “A Million And One Questions”, “The Sixth Sense”). Also beats like Styles P’s “Good Times” (prod. by Swizz Beats), Jadakiss’ “By Your Side” (prod. by Baby Grand), or Jay-Z’s “All I Need” (prod. by B!nk) where the sample is mostly used as a hook, and/or most of the verses just take stabs/filtered parts.
Yeah, often that part of the sample that you like should still be used somewhat minimally. I see a lot of producers take a 3 second piece of a sample, make a million chops and use it to make their entire loop. Having it appear everyone in a while can be a better way of achieving balance
I've been chopping since I started making beats in 2006. I always try to make the samples I use unnoticeable, so chopping is the perfect technic to achieve this.
Of course you would start this video with one of my FAVORITES by Gang Starr! I almost took the isolated vocals of the late great Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal from it for one of my own beats! 🙏🏾
Video idea: Make a video about how *DJ Premier* during the early 2000s Ownerz era started leaving out hi-hats in some beats and using fewer in others, which gave his productions a unique bounce I haven't heard many talk about. This shift came after he was criticized for using the same drums over and over, and you can hear it across several tracks on The Ownerz, including Who Got Gunz, Nice Girl Wrong Place, Sabotage, Skillz, Riot Akt, Eulogy, but also in songs on their latest album like Bad Name. Other Preemo tracks with no or limited use of hi-hats: Khaleel - Hot Flames, Jaz-O & The Immobilarie - Love Is Gone, NYGz - Giantz Ta Thiz, Royce da 5'9" - Hip Hop, Snoop Dogg - The One And Only, The Lady of Rage - Unfucwitable, Afu-Ra feat. Guru - Blvd., Afu-Ra - Sucka Free, Blaq Poet - Poet Has Come, Xzibit - What A Mess, Pitch Black - It's All Real, Pitch Black feat. Styles P - Nice, Pitch Black - Revenge, M.O.P. - Bloody Murdah, M.O.P. - What I Wanna B, Ol' Dirty Bastard - Pop Shots, Little Vic - The Exorcist, MC Lyte - Wonder Years, Smooth B - Game Over, Special Teamz - Main Event, Anisha Nicole - One Track Mind and I guess many more. His recent track Define My Name with Nas is also an example of this style.
You have to have an ear for it.....beats can be intuitive, but knowing a worldwide variety of music is so important. I'm struggling getting to know new equipment for song production, keyboards/guitars/bass into a ZoomR8. Thankfully, beats come easy to me because the rest of the production is a daunting task to this point😅
for several years his beats have been weak, they don't swing at all, and those without drums are a complete failure. However, Premier, Muggs and Sermon are in a completely different league
Excellent video Navi, could you make a beatmaking video of the Venezuelan guys from El Dojo? There are several rappers but if you can, one of Lil Supa would be great. It's in Spanish of course, but the sound is unique, it has a mix of Muggs with Alchemist and Wu Tang. TREMENDOS . Greetings 🙌🙌
Navie! Please consider adding to notegrabber something to grab multiple notes maybe per bar or so! (As an actualization) nice plugin! Even better video!
I would argue that MASS APPEAL is intermediate. Basic is finding a 4 bar bridge or Intro and looping it. Premo found some random couple seconds amongst the chaos, pitched it down drastically, and added percussion. Much harder than looping a bridge lol
My question and I assume most producers question isn't how to sample.. but, HOW to get the samples we used cleared when we are regular everyday nobodies that have ZERO POWER and no contact lists in order to get in touch with the right people in order to clear said samples? That's 100% the problem! Producers that have already found success are able to get their samples cleared. Meanwhile I'll make 100 of the dopest bangers money can buy but since I'm a nobody I can't even bother with posting my beats because I'll never be able to get the samples cleared! It's really not fair! /endrant
Just use em anyway. They aren't gonna come after ya until you make it. Use whatever samples you want. By the time they care, you'll at least had gotten something out of it
