Thank you for this video. You are a patient person! I was hoping I could do this myself. Sadly, no. Who thought this design was a good idea? It would be simpler just to buy a new car!
My 2013 Ford escape went for $30,000 it was a woman that designed the 2013 Ford escape. Without any thoughts on how to change a bulb with a burnout it's absolutely ridiculous.
I agree. Ford has made the process to change bulbs is like you said a major PITA. Must be a money maker for them but even my favourite mechanic shop does t want to do it.
Yeah, it’s definitely that car that will sit in the shop for hours for such little maintenance work such as a bulb…. I was looking at the placement of the alternator and it’s horribly located in a difficult to access location
My wife changed the driver's turn signal with my guidance in about 3 min. Her small arm was able to reach it from inside the engine bay which was so nice after seeing how most are doing it. So, in short, get yourself a wife with thin arms and have a lifetime of free turn signal changes.
I just had to pull this bulb for the second time. First time I had scratches almost to my shoulder this time I looked a little deeper and figured out that only 3 screws hold the black box in place. 2 in front and one in back that can be reached with a 1/4 drive ratchet/8 MM socket then the box will swing right out of the way leaving the turn signal in plain sight and easily reachable. Much easier that way.
What is that black box? I dove into the driver's side today, ran into that box and wasn't sure what to do. I can not get to the turn signal unless I remove it. I am trying to switch all of those bulbs out to LED and I managed to pull a wire off of the fog light. Now I have to take that box off for sure.
Joe Barbieri I feel you brother. a lot of new vehicles you pretty much have to pull the bumper cover to replace bulbs and lights. more money for the stealership.
This can be done without pulling the entire inner fender out. After you take out the 7mm flange screws, you can muscle the inner fender in a bit and insert your other arm to unplug and take out the bulb. You'll have to do it by feel, but it keeps you from having to take the whole inner fender/wheel off. Also, use your finger strength, otherwise your forearm flexes in the gap. The factory bulb is a 2827, which is higher wattage and twice the price of the standard 194NA bulb, but much brighter.
Just did this job. Required someone else with thinner arms to get the bulb in and socket back in place. I won't do it again. Shame on Ford for making this such an ordeal.
Funny. I’m watching this video again thinking I had never watched it. 2 min into the video I’m thinking, “I’d rather sell the car than try to change the parking light myself.” 😄
I was able to do this by feel without removing the tire, just loosening the splash shield and reaching in. Slide the bulb out, put the new one in and twist it back into place. Helps if you have tiny feminine arms too haha!
Hi everyone, 29 November, 2021 - on driver side, I was able to successfully replace bulb without wheel removal or splash guards, etc. i removed the airbox and was able to reach right down into the cavity next to radiator to reach the bulbs . You rock man. Just got the driver side bulb out using your method. Was already under the hood to change the battery and got to thinking about replacing the burnt out turn signal bulb and saw your comment. Huge thanks for the tip.
Ok guys. Just had my learning curve on this one. My tech and I figured out it takes 5 minutes to pull the air box out and you can reach right down and change it. Also you can see everything your doing. Total tome start to finish is about 15 minutes max. Hope this helps.
Gonna be doing this in a couple days. I was just thinking "there has to be another way". lol. Do you have room to reach both sides doing this or will I have to muscle the right splash guard to do that side?
Is there a trick to getting the bulb out of the housing? My right side is out. I can get the bulb assembly out of the lens area, but can't unclip the bulb with one hand. I can't quite reach with two hands. I haven't tried taking off the wheel, since I don't have a paved driveway and don't trust the jack stand on gravel.
I did mine on the passenger side wasnt too bad. I jacked up the car, removed the wheel and the wheel splash cover. Also if you take the under engine cover down you can fit two hands in. This makes a big difference to hold on the socket with one hand while to change the bulb with the other. While the car is jacked up and splash cover down you might as well change the oil. Don't you love Fords?
Evan M I know I’m 2 years late, but to be quite honest, the best way to do it is take the whole bumper off, if you don’t want to be on the floor struggling in weird angles. It’s not hard to take off a bumper imo.
I have done this twice already. By advice, do all the bulbs at the same time, and swap to LED so you don't have to do them so often. Changing a couple of directional bulbs should not take an hour.
Edit: my vehicle is a 2015 .it is hollow behind the trim piece i stated. However i was informed by someone who tried with a 2014 (in my reply comments) and it didn't work for theirs because it was solid behind it. So if your vehicle is solid behind i apologize it definitely won't work for you. OK so I know this video is old . However on the front of the ford escape above the light is a black trim piece. You can safely pop that off with a skinny flat head and you will have access to the blinker bulb/turn signal bulb which ever you call it . Takes less time and definitely less of a headache. Idk why he did it this way.
I got my 2014 Escape a few months ago, and I've been wondering if this trim piece could be removed to access the fog lamp assemblies. One of my fog lamps burnt-out a couple of days ago (first one since purchasing the vehicle), so I'm going to give it a try tomorrow. Thanks @Summer Collett 🙂
Update: Not sure if all Escapes are the same, but I tried this on my 2014 Escape Titanium this morning and behind the trim is piece is solid bumper. No access to the fog lamp assemblies. Not to mention the little tabs on the trim piece are super thin and brittle, so a few snapped with the tiniest bit of pressure. I'll have to order a new trim piece now, but oh well. Now I know.
@@summercollett485 No worries. I wouldn't have known until I tried. Looking at it, I could probably cut a small access in the panel behind the trim piece just big enough to sneak a hand in. But that'll be another job for another day (and after more thought).
Absolute nightmare to do. I tried taking off the screws referenced in the video and it's not enough to reach the turn signal housing. You'd need to remove the bottom lower fender to reach that housing. Moronic design for the express purpose of making customers do it during a Ford service. Changing a safety turn signal bulk should be 10 minutes as it is on the rear. This is now officially my last Ford car I'll ever buy.
There probably all the same now a days they want you to have to go to the dealer where they can charge you some outrages man hour rate to change a what used to be a 50 cent bulb now I am afraid to ask
For me is the low beams headlight in my 2015 Ford Escape. I rather had it done at Ford for the running lights. I just had my fog lights replaced. I still need a light bulb for my running light for the blinker. It drives me nuts on it hearing the clicking clicked fast.
Are you sure they are the same bulb? I bought them, but most people are saying they are 1787 bulbs not sure if they are the same. Just wanted to check if you changed the front ones.
How do you even take the bulb out? Probably the easiest part but i haven't found one video of that. Pull it straight out once it's been removed but isn't there something holding it in?
For the left one I just removed the air filter box and you can access it that way. 10 min. i uploaded a video of it. 2013 escape easy front left signal light replace
2015 Ford Escape(No black box in mine) When you have a warped tire that ate through the fender wall but nothing else so you can stick your hand in there, and grab it because you have long arms.No tools required! 😆
Thanks for this video! I bought the car with some damage to the drivers side.(headlight/bumper cover/signal not working) I helped my buddy for 2 hours to find out it wasn’t the bulb. I will need to buy a part. I just had a question for you: what is the grey coloured “connector”piece that leads from wire attached to the socket holding the turn bulb? Its cracked and disconnected and I would like to purchase one but don’t know what it’s called. Thanks in advance!
There seems to be a lag in the turn signals on the 2013-2019 Escapes. They illuminate rather slow compared to normal turn signals found in cars like GM, Honda, Toyota, etc

I tried this last week on my daughter's 2013 on teh driver's side but i can't get past the black module there and have no idea what it is so I can't look to remove it. I will try the airbox route this weekend.
That’s Also a horrible location for the brain box of the car to be right next to the tire and where water comes in horrible design , just remove engine splash guard no need to remove tire I did it in 5-10 min
Going price from the dealership to do this is over $100, they said it took them over an hr to do this. They also said they gave us a deal for changing the bulb.
willijnm should only take maybe 1/2 hour if you know what's involved. personally I think it's crap to go through that much work to change a bulb. This is easy through, try changing a headlight bulb on an late model Audi. usually have to pull the bumper cover.
Don't go through the wheel well. Take out the airbox. I just did this on my car and it took 20 minutes and was easy with only an 8mm socket. This worked for the drivers side, passenger side may be different.
But, you didn't show how to get the bulb out of the socket. I can't get both hands on it and I don't want to break it. I just need to know how it is attached.
I recently had to replace the battery on my 2014 escape. Although it was doable it was equally involved with removing other parts to get to the battery. Wtf? I found this video after realizing I had already removed too many things but Jesus, I’m putting everything back, got to have my break pads replaced soon anyway so I’ll try replacing the damn bulb then
If you arm is small enough, you can reach in from the top and change the bulb with one hand. My wife just did it. You don’t have to remove anything. It’s not easy though
Don't listen to this... I just did mine... come from the front. Like your trying to change the oil ... and reach for it... and do it from that way... 5 minutes instead of 30 to 45 minutes....
It’s the wife’s Escape, and if you think the turn signal bulb replacement sucks. Wait till you have to replace the battery. Ya all but have to remove the windshield. My 2008 Acadia is the same BS to replace the headlights. Pull tire, pull splash guard and blindly reach.
Terrible design Ford. This job takes only 30 seconds on my wife's Honda. Other stupid design flaws include changing wiper blades, and orange warning lights that come on but don't tell you what they're for without going to the garage for a diagnostic check. I've only had my Ford 3 months but I think I'll be going back to Honda soon it's such a PITA!
I will save a lot of time for everyone: go under the car. I was able to swap out bulbs on both sides in about a minute. I used my 6” ramps to make it easier, but my big butt could easily get under there without them.
Well you should try changing the bulbs while the stupid pcm is floating around right in the way cuz the idiots that had the car b4 me broke the mounting brackets for it and left it floating around inside the bumper
I like my Ford, but damn. Why did they destroy the ease of working on the First escapes with this malarkey. I swear they don’t want people working on their own cars these days . I would think taking off the Skid guard then the black box would be easier ? Crazy though 😮👈

Is this seriously what needs to be done?! I can't afford to pay them for this shit. But hell I don't want to do all this on my own either I don't have all the tools to take the damn wheel off my car fuck.
LOL I own a 2013 Escape, I paid a mechanic to do it, screw that shit, to change a bulb, wait till you have to change the battery on it, just as tedious.
So disassemble the front end take half the engine apart all to change a fucking single light. 4 hour job. What happened to take out 2 screws and your done. 30 second job.
I have nothing to ease the install process.... just a reflection on how easy it " used to be " decades ago.. In addition, the battery change is either an $ 80 job or do it yourself in over an hour.. Just ridiculous..
Dan Baker this is how the newer vehicles are being made. I just worked on a 2008 audi that you had to pull the bumper cover off to change the drivers side headlight bulb. lol

Thanks. I was afraid that was the direction I had to go in from.
I guess I’ll ride around another year with that bulb out, or take it to Ford let them replace it, their design!
Back to "hand" signals
I replaced my passenger side and its still not F###### working. Any ideas? Great job Ford!
Don't listen to this... I just did mine... come from the front. Like your trying to change the oil ... and reach for it... and do it from that way... 5 minutes instead of 30 to 45 minutes....
From the top or bottom?
Never seen a car that every little maintenance item was such a pain in the ass.
It’s the wife’s Escape, and if you think the turn signal bulb replacement sucks. Wait till you have to replace the battery. Ya all but have to remove the windshield. My 2008 Acadia is the same BS to replace the headlights. Pull tire, pull splash guard and blindly reach.
Why not through the hood?
The 2013 Ford Escape is by far one of the worst designed vehicles I have ever had the displeasure of owning. What a POS design. Thanks for your video.
stupid hard job, not surprised
I woulda just pulled the bumper on that PoS. Full access lol
Man! What a pain in the ass. It would have been so easy to make an external cover for this.
I used my 6” ramps to make it easier, but my big butt could easily get under there without them.
and thats why my signals been out for a year already
Yeah you dont have to remove inner fender or tire i put led fog lights in my wifes escape just taking bolts out
I own one of these God forsaking pos cars. After putting a starter on it yesterday,I believe I aged 5 years. All of this just to change a bulb🤣🤣insane!
Well you should try changing the bulbs while the stupid pcm is floating around right in the way cuz the idiots that had the car b4 me broke the mounting brackets for it and left it floating around inside the bumper
I don’t think that that was it like he said at the end of the video. It was much more than that!!
Engneers don't are how hard it s to work on these things!
I like my Ford, but damn. Why did they destroy the ease of working on the First escapes with this malarkey. I swear they don’t want people working on their own cars these days . I would think taking off the Skid guard then the black box would be easier ? Crazy though 😮👈
can they make it more harder 😒
ugh f*ck new cars... need my 72 Chevelle back!
Hey Ford, make this friggin harder!!!!! Jeez.
That's it! You're effing hilarious! How do you get the bulb out? Ford can go screw on this BS!
Funny, just dropped the car off this morning for service!
The wife thought I was joking when I told her I couldn't change it myself, my arm just couldn't reach the housing
Just did this on a 2014 Escape. This video helped a great deal. In advance, you better have long, skinny arms. I have neither. I will have scrapes and lines on my right forearm for the next couple weeks, guaranteed. To "fishin rod72", please state what model year and motor you have and post a video because not saying the year, your post is unqualified. My 2.0 Ecoboost.....thre air box would not have made any difference.
Is this seriously what needs to be done?! I can't afford to pay them for this shit. But hell I don't want to do all this on my own either I don't have all the tools to take the damn wheel off my car fuck.
buy a bulb from halfords UK and they will fit it for 5 quid!
How can u come up with a worse design??! I now understand why so many people don't use their turn signals
This is the harder thing I had ever done in a car. I scrash every part of my arms.
Not exactly accurate for passenger side considering the washer fluid is blocking everything.
Ridiculous.........just plain ridiculous. They make it so you don't want to work on your cars anymore.
LOL I own a 2013 Escape, I paid a mechanic to do it, screw that shit, to change a bulb, wait till you have to change the battery on it, just as tedious.
MDKArtist i have a 2016 nd the battery is just horrible smh thanks ford
So disassemble the front end take half the engine apart all to change a fucking single light. 4 hour job.
What happened to take out 2 screws and your done. 30 second job.
I have nothing to ease the install process.... just a reflection on how easy it " used to be " decades ago.. In addition, the battery change is either an $ 80 job or do it yourself in over an hour.. Just ridiculous..
this is effen ridiculous! is this why the dealer wanted to charge me over $150 bucks... no way Jose. Really FORD???
Well this video just made me want to sell the piece of shit
Major pain in the butt. I didn't see any other way to do it
Are you frickin kidding me 😡 oh holy sheep crap
And I thought changing the third brake light was annoying oml
Who ever invented this ludicrous idea should've fitted non blowing bulbs
Holy crap! really??
Dan Baker this is how the newer vehicles are being made. I just worked on a 2008 audi that you had to pull the bumper cover off to change the drivers side headlight bulb. lol
This is why I don't buy Ford, (junk) but I have to do this for my girlfriend😕
I don't know why they need to make everything so difficult these days. lol
